You'd be surprised how prevalent this attitude is among filmmakers, especially those from smaller film industry complexes (i.e. not Hollywood, India, or Hong Kong).
"The cleanest water has no fish. The cheapest person has no shame."
I'm gonna use that from now on.
That’s somewhat mistranslated. The second part is a cheap and shameless person has no vulnerability.
@AFL97 无敌,not 无底
@@doryfishie2 invicable in that context would be read as invulnerable to judgment so its meaning would still be shameless, or lacks shame.
the original cheapest person has no shame matchs the intended meaning more than a more litteral translation
@@boser2562 well no. The point isn’t that they are shameless. The point is that you can’t hurt them. Because they are already shameless, so you cannot shame them into following ethical rules
@@boser2562 for example, the plagiarising writer mentioned at the end Guo jingming, who famously directed tiny times. Because he has no shame, he can keep making money off of someone else’s work and refuse to apologise for 15 years even after he was ruled to do so by the court. And he only now apologise 15 years later because a new law is being enacted on Jan 1st 2021, so he apologises one day before that law can penalise him.
And even so, in the “apology” he basically said “I was just a child, why are you guys tearing into my old wounds?” And “I’m going to donate the profit from my plagiarism to charity for you.” What a shitty person.
As an Indian, I share these feelings about our industry as well. However, as an Indian who is also a Psychologist, I wonder if apologies are so rare in our cultures because the other thing that is super common is being unforgiving and never ending shaming. So apologising here, feels like losing and dying forever. We can soften up on the shaming and the increase the encouragement on apologies being accepted
For most part it is an Asia Dilemma that asian culture value "face" in many aspect. Not entirely exclusive to India or China but also the mixed bag of colonized culture smaller asian countries as well, one example will be Japan. As you know that we have watched the mainstream media over the past decades that portrayed Japan as "honorable and apologetic" for smallest mistakes, well that is simply not entirely true because till this date the japanese governments never really apologize anything for their past warcrimes during WW2. Recently they claimed to had "formally apologize" to Korea, but then after that they went on to committed independence congratulatory money controversy. Japan pays Philippines to keep quiet about Japans warcrimes, remove them from their history books and to remove their comfort women statues. Korea isn't ever going to do that. Japan does this type of propaganda all over the world, even Germany. People underestimate how propaganda heavy Japan is because they are more successful at it than China. This is why Japan will never truly consider an ally to the asia region and this is the reason why for the sake of denying their past in order to save "face" to became an american lapdog as we all knows of their position today
One theory example will be if I bring you to courtroom, your lawyer sit next to you and told you to deny the claims even though when you know is true and the other side is right. If you apologize then the judge will dismiss any of your defense and can easily pass maximum penalty on your side and you will suffer a great fall. The morally thoughts in our mind would be "if we as people apologize and accepted, things will go at ease from that moment onwards" but in reality it will always be "if I apologize, the returns to me will not be as simple because everything I'm trying to be will be morally bankrupt at this point". Psychologially, it's the fear of discounting yourself more than owning to yourself. The shaming part might not be long from the other side rather ownself shaming ownself eternally, thus the other side will bring up the issue whenever you might done something shameful again. Humanity does forgive but never forget
There's broadly two types of cultures when it comes to this sort of thing: Cultures that punish social misdeeds primarily through shame (informal, external), and cultures where social misdeeds are predominantly punished through guilt (formal, internal). There's advantages and disadvantages to both. A disadvantage of shame cultures is that misdeeds are only punished when they are publicly witnessed, which can bring on the idea that doing bad things is morally fine so long as you get away with doing them.
As a Brazilian, you don't know how much our population identifies with this issue. Our bootleg market is also strong because of our country's ludicrous taxes that spike the prices for official products. Here we have something called "stray dog mentality" our people always think foreigners and foreign countries are better at everything and everything that comes from Brazil is bad. I’ve just come across your channel. Very cool perspective for me as a Westerner. I work in the film industry here in America. One point I’d like to make is that American perceptions of Chinese products (at least in my industry) have definitely shifted in the past half decade. Nanguang, the parent company to high-end “Nanlux” LED film lights has made huge waves in the professional space. Also the gimbal manufacturer Zhiyun has become quite popular. Both companies are proudly and openly Chinese top to bottom, which I think is what is shifting attitudes regarding Chinese products in the West. When you make something good and sell it at a competitive price people respect that, regardless of past biases. I own several products from both companies and happily recommend them to others over her.

Honestly, would love to see a time when people could look at an animation and *know* it's a Chinese style animation.
People can point out French, American, Canadian (even if some people get US/Canadian mixed up), Japanese, and even Korean styles. More animation styles are always great to see.
Most Chinese anime(talking specifically about them rn) IS very different looking than Japanese. Take Antidote, a BL anime from China, the art style isn't as polished and the animation is awful sometimes. Chinese studios seem to prefer realism when it comes to hairstyles, color palettes and over all anatomy of characters, and Chinese anime also has really weird length of episodes... Like there's this one Chinese show about zombies and one episode can be 40 minutes long while the next will be only 8 minutes long...
I've never heard of a distinct "Canadian" style of animation before, what are some examples of Canadian animation that's different from American productions? And from what I've seen from Korean animation, it seems very Japanese-inspired as well, practically identical.
Comparatively, from what I've watched, Chinese film and animation is not afraid to fully embrace over-the-top and bombastic flair with their action, while taking it completely seriously too. Anywhere else, esp if done in America, it wouldve been considered corny and artificial, maybe even cringey.
@@kky-jd3xj Look up Bob and Margaret. That's an old cartoon but it's what i think of first when it comes to cartoons from Canada. Oh Canada! was a great show back when CN cared about showing the variety of animation from around the world.

Thank you so much for this take. I as a Hong Kong chinese person also feel this frustration
I honestly hope that people won't write off this video on Yang's channel just because it's not as famous outside China - the message here is so important. As an animator in America of Chinese descent but with a passion for anime, I'd spent years trying to wrestle with why animation in China seemed to have no defined style and magnum opus pieces which had international appeal. The times are finally changing with films like Nezha and Legend of Xiaohei, but the fact that so many of these creatively bereft films still occupy the public consciousness is a tremendous obstacle to selling what storytelling is possible out of Chinese artists.
Even in America, where the same problems lead to new works being deemphasized in Hollywood, they at least have a storied tradition to fall back upon (unwarrantedly) - I can only hope that a few incredible success stories will push Chinese cinema into the kind of golden age we saw in the late 70s in America, and I'm glad that when it happens, Yang will be here to introduce us!
Here here!
Well put man. Best of luck on your animation career!
I also hope for that but the thing is, the CCP doesn't take kindly to the 'creative' types. One wrong step and you disappear....
The only way to have a cultural golden age in China is if the CCP steps down or if they became less totalitarian to allow ideas to flourish and censorship to die out. But that just seems doubtful

(Sure they also have stolen ideas, scenes and maybe even full stories illegally.. and not get caught. But for example the Kimba vs Simba debate is really unfairly onesided and kinda flawed, full of misinformation.. for example some of the scenes people compare to each other are from Kimba movie that came AFTER Lion King... but also some of the scenes are from movies and series that came before... its hard to pinpoint now who is copycatting who actually).

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I haven't heard the perspective of the Chinese people on this issue. I'm glad good writers are getting attention they deserve!
I love the Zhuge Liang meme thumbnail in the search results for The Autobots
Director: "Blaming that the peoples and the media are siding with foreigners."
Also the Director: *Plagiarism a movie from Pixar*
it's so weird to me that mainland china doesnt like genshin impact for being a knockoff while i've been defending it from racists saying it's a knockoff because it builds so much of its own systems and identity on top of the basic botw aesthetic. i've even been playing it in chinese because it's so rare i get to play a game with my own culture in it. i'd totally understand if they disliked its gacha though
One common reason for the hate is because in China, Genshin was advertised more as an alternative to BotW for people without a Switch. It highlights all the similarities instead of showing off the original systems. The game is proud of its similarities, and people did not like that.
Calling it the BOTW aesthetic feels false. It intentionally apes stuff we associated with Ghibli was was common and cliche with that studio was new. And is intentionally flashier. Now not liking it, that's legit. As feels BOTW but more anime and worse has microtransations, but even then has some good points.
"alternative to BotW for people without a Switch" while the game itself doesn't play like BotW in the most part. as GI player, I still want Switch just to play BotW.
The games industry is filled with knock offs. Call of Duty started its life as a Medal of Honor knock off, which later down the line lead to Medal of Honor being rebooted as a knock off of Call of Duty 4. I feel the term "knock off" is a bit disingenuous, as a game that borrows heavily from another can still be a good game. Microtransactions aside (which are hardly ever good) I think Genshin Impact is a good bit of fun. I liked how they added in the other languages. I play a lot of Japanese games that have subtitles with the voices in Japanese but hearing Korean and Chinese ingame was a unique experience.
As a Chinese myself addicted to Breath of the Wild, one of my friend in Shanghai got excited about Genshin, I basically threw him a truckload of Breath of the Wild video and got him a used NS to stop him from playing it...A lot of Chinese NS players hate this game, the short clip in this video is actually a gamer smashing his PS4 in front of the Sony stage for advertising Genshin on their console.
Extremely great video.
This is great, thanks for sharing your thoughts!!!
This movie looks like the result of an College Animation student making a long overdue CG movie and he had to turn it in before Summer Break started.
Like, 1 DAY before Summer Break started.
With the equipment china could provide back in 2015, a college student can do better. Seriously, even the original toys before the 2000s look better. And that's like over 15 years earlier. (It's 1998 isn't it?)
@@arry5432 you can look at many chinese animations even pre-1980, they look better than that shitbag. even though they are 2D each frame was hand drawn giving it a unique art style. one of them is "Where Is Mama", which is a completely hand-painted short film made in 1960.
The man is completing his animation DURING THE PREMIER
@@arry5432 If you're talking about Toy Story, the movie came out in 1995.
The fact that lots of Chinese folks are bothered or frustrated by Genshin Impact, a game I think is actually not nearly the copycat it initially presents itself to be, says a lot about how frustrated they must be by their perception globally. That game’s pretty great! But while it might not perpetuate the stigma, it certainly didn’t push back against it.
And hell, some Chinese people even started liking Genshin
Thank you for this video ! 😊🌹
Fun fact: the creator of genshin, created honkai star rail (town with no name ripoff) and INTENTIONALLY made the game 'trash' to make it good
I can't believe it. A developer making their game 'trash' yet loved by most people! (Im speaking about trashcans, the chad trashcans, etc)
Ripping off credits? OH MY GOD
THAT HITS ME HARD
Why does Lightning McQueen sound like he's voiced by a Chinese female that does lewd ASMR?
Almost every Chinese cartoon MC is voiced by a female voice actor. Don’t ask me why. I watched them as I grew up and my reality shattered when I found out about that.
He also looks like an lmp1 car
@@cresbalundo8845 he is actually a copy of the carla veloso model in cars 2
How do you know how chinese females that do lewd asmr sound like? Hmmmmm
@@RandomPerson-cm2wg Why would you grow up with it...
Imagine ripping off a movie so much that you have to steal the credits
how can anyone make an animation like this and actually think its anywhere near good or worthy of being shown to human eyes? if you show this to a kid they would get nightmares
The connection (as an American) between anti-maskers and how other Chinese people see Chinese knock-offs was brilliant and a connection I had never made before. Great video!
Hello from Italy :D
I literally laughed and then said "true". It's a great connection.
It’s not a good comparison in my opinion. It’s reflects American culture of being selfish but free while wearing a mask represents no individualality but community ie china. I’m not American or an anti masker btw
me too lmao@@jordyngalvan8558
I thank you for bringing in the Chinese people perspective so much. It's hard to remember that people are not accurately represented by whatever is produced in their country or the government. I also now know to watch some of those original animation besides anything else, just to support genuine artists fighting stigma and history like this
I would agree with that if we're talking about most countries, but since China is a socialist country ruled by a communist party with an iron fist over its "citizens". The government's opinions matter much more internationally than democratic countries such as Japan or Taiwan, and it represents what is "mainstream" in China's society.
@@kushio214 however, this
"movie" wasn't made by CCP.
This legit makes my skin crawl… wow.
I like how the cover is so much better than the actual movies graphics.
"In hopes of winning the coveted poop-shaped trophy"
Mom found the Poop Cup
Hahahaha.
HE DID WHAT IN HIS CUP
It's curious to see how hated genshin is by the mainland audience but universally welcomed by weebs internationally.
GI figured out how to make itself popular with weebs.
For one, they have a Loli.
Two: cutesy art style.
The weebs love that shit.
it's loved by chinese weebs too tho
@@ivanivanovitchivanovsky7123 wow honestly that's some insanely shallow thinking dude. it has some pretty responsive gameplay, the world is one of the most lively open worlds I've ever played in and the story is kinda intriguing. that's what makes it popular, not just among weebs, but among the general audience. and tbh hating on weebs is so 2012 dude. like I'm not even a weeb and I'm cringing at your comment.
@@foredee8496 I'm cringing reading your comment.
Have you never heard of someone making a joke?
Or do you live under a rock with old monks?
@@ivanivanovitchivanovsky7123 the thing is, someone might take that joke as legitimate criticism on your side
Yo i watched this shit with my friends in the last day of middle school, my friend Mathew bought it through the school's computer and we all watched it which was great because we we're having calling out animation errors, the graphics quality, the voice actors but mostly how the cars raced and the racing kid's eyes.
Great memories with the lads.
I better get paid for seeing this nightmare
