"Oh, white moves first." - ROSEN, Eric, International Master
So funny hahahha
9:36 In the variant where we can take our own pieces, there won't be a smothered mate tho 😅
True. Unless you're playing the variant of that variant where only white can take their own pieces.
@@allanshpeley4284 or you can only take your pieces when not in check
Watching Eric bait by talking about how he cant remember the line while showing his opponent all the moves to make to fall into the trap 😂😂 unreal
I don't think his opponent was streamsniping. That's the natural move for black after dislodging the knight on f3. That check is what usually makes the King's Gambit so sharp for both sides if either plays incorrectly.
@@DerickMasai he done it consistently throughout the game, not just that move
@@etypiccolo Even so, he was clearly calculating each move and not following it up like you do with a line you've memorized. He even messed up the critical move.
What made him choose to play the king's Gambit
hey eric, I just thought I'd pop in here to say that at 8:44 you missed mate in 3 by playing Qe8+
you pointed out the obvious smothered mate possibility but didn't calculate beyond what happens if king takes because then you have Nf6+
the king has 2 possibilities now, either it moves back which runs into Nf7# or it goes to f8 where it runs into Bh6#
anyway, really cool game and awesome opening, but I couldn't let this awesome mate in 3 go unmentioned
Isn't black has king back to d8 after knight f6?
@@kstishko6771 Then Nf7 is mate
@@bunpeishiratori5849 ohh, it makes sense
I was hoping someone else saw that. Thx for pointing it out. It would have been a beautiful finish imo.
A similar thing happened in a different quade gambit game
I love the fact that in less than a month of watching these videos my rating has been on a constant increase. Thanks alot Eric.
I've been watching for a year and while my rating, on average, clearly increased - due to lessons, what I can take away from just gameplay and by simply motivating me to play - it hasn't been constant. In fact, every time a video like this comes out I crash my rating by trying dubious variations that I just cannot find a good way to play.
I knew some things but it's different when you know the best moves or rules that guarantee a good looking position.
The best thing to do is to try it out first with the stockfish it will be able to challenge you on the tactics. From this you can learn from your mistakes and how to avoid them. It works for me.
@@felixmerz6229 i went from 600 to 1200 in blitz in one year. No lessons just watching videos like this and keep trying.
Dude, u make me feel like chess is too easy, so calm
Good that you feel like that, just don't actually play chess and it will stay that way as well

Eric's videos have cold opens... Too much fun
If you could take your own pieces, there would be no such thing as a smothered anyway!
Wow, that was a brutal trap. I would have resigned way earlier. Black is a good sport for playing to that mate
One of my favorite games I've seen so far. Beautiful.
A sharp and trappy game played along with a sharp yet chilly cool commentary. Also loved the flashback... Great video!
9:35 there will be no smothered mate if you can take your own pieces
This trap was crazy smooth 🔥🔥
Zion park is cool. Like how the rock formations are. Sideways and the way the trees grew. Like its tilted
At 2:38 Eric says "Oh...Black can do this!" which makes it _sound_ like he's figuring everything out in real time...but after that, he declares that "this is the main trap of the Quade variation", which sounds like he's quite familiar with the theory.
I think this might be one of Eric's famous tricks, where he "feeds" his stream-sniping opponent the idea that he's made a mistake, in order to lure 'em into the desired trap.
You could be right, but he also could be genuinely remembering the theory as he is going. I'm an avid KG player, and I was having similar thought processes as him. But he's also Eric lol
What an amazing gambit! I'm going to study this. Would be excellent for bullet.
6:37 there is a beautiful combination starting with Nxc7+ deflecting the bishop. If Kd8 there's Nxf7+ Kxc8 Qxd6#. If instead of Kd8 Ke7 Nd5+ Ke7 Nxd6+ Kd8 and Qf8#. And if after Nxc7 Ke7 there is Nd5 back with complete destruction (at least), but most lines lead to checkmate combined with d3 too.
Thank you for doing that. I can't "calculate" all the details yet, but I sensed that was the time to "press".
These games always makes me happy, then i go play some online chess and struggle half an hour trying to convert a winning endgame one pawn up haha
In the Quaid variation, you have to sac your Kuato to start the reactor.
Lmfao
Now we just need to the en passant smother mate, where somehow the pawn checks the smothered king
cool! Great teaching!
Man I would watch hours of King's Gambit games
I love it! Beautiful game.
You know you're dead, if Ercic says: Ohhhh...There is a funny line! :)))
Mate was smooth asf
Super cool line and with perfect play leads to an interesting endgame where black is down pawn count but has an extra piece by trapping the white knight. In this game black had to play d6 to maintain an advantage but the second he played bishop d6 it gave a huge advantage to white. I love this kind of gambits because in most lines it is so easy to mess up on either side.
SO SATISFYING
yo d6 is the move I was thinking to play in that position! nice!
What I've learned from Eric is: "when you have 3 pieces at a party - you wanna have a bigger party".
Omgggg eric, you missed a beautiful queen Sacrifice on move 13: 13. Qe8+ (R:e8 14. Nf7*) K:e8 14. Nf6+ (kd8 15. Nf7*) Kf6 15. Bh6* i was screaming to you to play it but you played bg5
Dahh he gave up after king captures
You need to go over this again. You've got a major flaw in the the moves you wrote down.
Figure it out.
15:10 **d4** opens the Bishop for later, maybe that is a part of why eval+ over the 0-0 **d3**.
Good to know Black has chances here!
That was beautiful
another vid already after that 8 hr marathon let's goooo
I hope I can get a smother mate one day… GG Eric!
“But it’s time to plant another seed, of a different type”

When you want to learn chess and watch ASMR..
That was sooooooooo cool. So much of that game so beautiful: the trapped queen, the slow death of blacks position, and the final checkmate via a smothered mate! Soooo cool
0:00 i thought i was looking at a captcha
At 6:37 checkmate was inevitable but u Messed it up🙊
That was ridiculous
Hey, I have a doubt. In the minute 10:17, black could’ve played pawn to c6, leaving an escape for his king and perhaps they could’ve gotten away with that mate, but I’m not fully sure if that works since we have Knight action there too. Correct me if I’m wrong. Also, English is not my first language so I apologize in case there are any mistakes. Thanks.
Yes, he was tricking him so that he could get the smothered mate.
@@boxnow8774 I see, thank you.
6:42, also, if "Oh no my Knight" there's QF8 mate in one, you know x)
9:28 knight c7 would work too. if he takes with the bishop you have mate in 5. take his knight on e7 with your bishop. he has to take with the rook. queen g8 and after rook moving back queen g5. rook moves back down. knight f7, king has to move 1 to the right and queen g8 wins.
You make it look so easy
That was a really fun game lol
you missed mate at 7:06, you could go Kb7, if bishop takes that knight, you eat f7, then make mate queen f8
So I tried this gambit. After my first move, I forgot everything in this video
That pawn that promoted was just sitting in the corner with this look on her face 😳
Oh no step-king, i'm stuck!
everyones gonna be playing kings gambit now
Eric, you missed such a beautiful mate in three!.. Just Qe8 ...
What a mate...
Me feeling scared to sack a pawn
Eric casually asking why can't I kill my own pieces
9:52 TAKE THE ROOK ERIC. TAKE IT
Just wanted to share a really fun move at 10:28 that I saw… I believe Ng8 leads to forced mate
If Rxg8, Qxg8 mate
If c6, Bxe7+ Bxe7 Qxe7+ Kc7 Qc5+ Kd8 Nf7 mate
There are a few variations that prolong the game but Ng8 is too fancy to pass up
At 7:10 can’t he still take the C7 pawn and if bishop takes then just Qf7+, Qf8 mate? I could be missing something I usually am
I think it is correct!! 👍
10:00 man i wish you took the rook with the queen!
For the smother mate at 2:03, bring the white queen to f3 -- and when black takes with the queen -- the knight moves in with the pillow
I have played a *lot* of KG games (b/c it's one of the only ones I learned a bit when starting) and I have almost _never_ seen *g4* .
9:45 if knight could attack same color queen then king would do the same and smothered mate was not possible!
So instead of g2, should black play Be7? Then if there’s a queen exchange the bishop lines up a revealed check in its place.
Ayy hi Eric!!
9:50 Nxe7 (white), bxe7 (black), bxe7+ (white), rxe7 (black), Qf8+ (white), re8 (black-forced), Nf7# (white checkmates black)
Pretty damn good for "not being familiar w this opening", LOL.
I am a simple man, I see King's gambit, I click :D
at 9:04, im pretty sure Qe8+ wins. Kxe8, Nf6+, Kf8, Bh6#. Pls tell me if im missing something.
What would you do if he had played h6 to prevent bishop out ?
Legend says Eric quacks in his sleep!
Hi , 11. Dxf7+ or11. Cxc7+ is mat with cxf7 and Dxd6?
"Oh yes, white moves first"
- IM Eric Rosen
0:41
10:18 pawn to c6 instead of the rook move and black survives I think... for some time :)
Great vids Eric. But did you miss the 2 knights and bishop mate at 10:00 or you really wanted that smothered mate. Lol
With the queen sack on e8
Qe8 worked even if Kxe8. Super pretty
Missed mate at 7:07 Kd5 takes c7 bishop recaptures Qf4 takes F7* Kd1 then Qf8#
Approvingly noted, that Eric evolves in the right direction... from boring London player he now becomes aware of the beauty of the Kings Gambit!
I play kings gambit as basically my main opening amd like never get g5 so i can never get the fun stuff
if every IM is as cool as eric
we can solve global warming
c6 at 10:23 to prolong thier loss?
For those who know chess, I have a question. A couple weeks ago, my friend and I (who both suck at chess) played an over the board game. I was playing as white and was down badly. I had lost all my queen side pawns and hadn’t taken anything of his yet. Eventually we reached this position with white to move: 2k2bnr/pp1r2p1/2ppQpb1/4p2p/B1R1P1PB/3q1N1P/n2N1P2/5RK1. The rest of the game went as follows:
Rxc6+ bxc6
Bxc6 Bf7
Qxd7+ Kb8
Qd8#
How bad did my friend mess up and what could he have done differently?
I'm a beginner as well so can't help answer your question, but wouldn't putting the position in an engine kinda answers it?
regardless of the material advantage black has in this position, white has a far greater advantage in terms of development. black's dark square bishop and one of their knights is completely unactivated and useless. even the light squared bishop is somewhat trapped due to the closed nature of the position. castling queenside was probably also a bad idea for black. in the future your friend should pay attention to their development and not just tunnel vision on pawns because it will end up being detrimental to them
At 5:15 Qh5 wouldn't be a winning position since the pawn gets pinned too?
Btw, great content Eric, keep it going.
the black queen could take the middle pawn with check
0:41 "oh white moves first" -IM eric rosen
Aw the mini horse 🐎 🐴 wanted to play chess ♟
13. Qe8+ did work didn't it? Or what am I missing
Hey Eric,
How long until you're a GM?
At 7:10 you already had a forced mate in 3 with Nxc7+. Best try for black is Kd8 after which white plays Nxf7+. Black goes Kxc7. After which Qxd6 is checkmate.
Not forced because 11. Nc7+, Ke7
I've been going this line as black, stockfish approve, and the games are always wild!
9:35 is Qb7 possible? Forced mate maybe. Uhm Qb7 c3 Bxe7+ Bxe7 Nc7# if Rxe7 instead of Bxe7 I think there’s mate with Qc8+ (or Qb8+) followed by Re8 and again Nc7#
Edit: oh maybe Nc6 defends against that? Instead of c3. Does it?
6:30
Isn't white winning after Nxc7 , i mean if BxN then Qxf7+ , Kd8 ,Qf8#
if Kd8 then Nxf7+ , KxN , QxB#
Ke7
7:22 doesn't the opponent have QG1?
Dont think so coz after nf3 the queen has no good way to stop the bishop checking
just what is this contraption that talks to you?
At 6:53 what if Nxc7 Bxc7 Qxf7+ Kd1 Qf8#
How did the quacking originate?
when you say at 9:52 you trap him, its false. moving knight to f6 gives him the oppertunity to escape by pion to c6/5; you get a lot of pieces of the board but its not a trapped mate.
9:39 Nxf7 Kxc8 lol
u familiar with Leonid Bondar?
6:50 isn't taking the knight with the bishop just leads to mate in one with Qf8?
Lol yes 😂
Anyone thought about 12. Kf6?
I played the Quaalude variation before but I have no memory of what happened.
9:08 I think you could move the Knight on d5 to f6, Qe8, and then Knight e5 to f7
Edit : nvm you did it ❤😂
I have feeling that I’ve seen this video before
