  • The 2018 HP Omen is the best gaming laptop they've made in a few years. Starting at $800 this thin-bezeled laptop is worth checking out.
    HP Omen - amzn.to/2MP4syS
    Omen Mouse - amzn.to/2MKNEJg
    With 8th gen 6-core CPUs and GTX 1060 on tap, the new HP Omen delivers a surprisingly good value in the mid-tier gaming laptop market. The 144 Hz screen brings a smooth gaming experience to the laptop without being super expensive.

    Awesome laptop, but I really wish the designers behind gaming laptops would just abandon the edgy black and red gamer look. It's so tacky.
    Edit: Damn those likes tho lol

    I've had this laptop for around 20 days now (i7 8750H, GTX 1070, 16GB RAM) and I agree with everything Dave said, just a couple of my own notes:
    - Without undervolting, the keyboard surface got REALLY hot during a heavy gaming session (2 hours of Doom 2016), my WASD fingers actually felt like they'd been burnt afterwards, it was VERY uncomfortable, and the right side of the keyboard is a lot worse, I couldn't hold my fingers on the right side for ANY length of time... after undervolting, it's better, but still not great... YMMV with this, maybe I have thin skin :)
    - I have a European (Norway) model of this and I don't have the individual keyboard lighting zones, it's just all red, with no option to change this in the OMEN app
    - At 2.4kg, it's noticeably heavier than some of its competitors, but it makes up for that with the price
    - There's no Intel GPU or Optimus on this laptop, it runs the NVIDIA GPU all of the time, which explains the poorer battery life, but this also has consequences for Linux users, etc
    All in all, it's a great laptop, especially for the price. I have to undervolt and disable turbo-boost on the CPU to get the temperatures to a comfortable level, but after that, I'm happy with it. :)

      Hey , thanks for the your review man! I appreciate it, as I am looking to buy this specific model (GTX1070) in the UK. I would like to ask you a few question if possible for this model:
      1) How loud are the fans (i.e. if someone is sleeping near me would it annoy them?) and is performance affected by the temperature?
      2) Is the GTX 1070 any good? I've found a lot of great laptops with a GTX 1060 but I don't know how much better the GTX 1070 is and if it's worth getting... (Personally the most demanding game I'll play is the Shadow of the Tomb Raider)
      3) How long does battery last for on average? And are there any ways you could increase the battery life?
      I am currently considering this laptop and a custom built PC Specialist Recoil II which has a GTX1060. My main priority is the graphics card and the screen to be good (battery life anything above 3.5-4 hours I am fine).
      Thanks in advance!

    • @sub-vn2of
      @sub-vn2of 6 років тому

      How do you lower the temperature i no u said it but i really need full description thanks

    • @subsonik1
      @subsonik1 6 років тому +7

      Hey, no worries dude!
      1) In the Omen control panel, there are two power profiles you can choose from, Default and Performance, the first has a quieter fan profile, while the latter is louder. Default is pretty loud, but if they're a heavy sleeper, you might just about get away with it, especially on less demanding games. I would say Performance is a no-go, the fans get very loud.
      2) At 1080p resolution, the GTX 1070 is actually probably a little overkill for all (95-99% at least?) AAA titles out today, and that will probably come out for a while. I played a few very demanding games and they were smooth as butter, throw G-SYNC into the mix and you can't go wrong with this laptop for gaming on even the most demanding titles. :)
      3) I was getting around 3.5-4.5hrs while idling/browsing around in Windows. You can undervolt the CPU, lower the brightness, use power saving settings in Windows to get a little more, but with this laptop not having an Intel iGPU, it's having to run the dedicated GPU all time, which really kills the battery.
      If you do get this laptop, I'd recommend you look into undervolting and maybe disabling Turbo Boost using ThrottleStop, that will help with your battery life and fan noise.
      I've had PC Specialist laptops before, also, they're very good. There are pros and cons between the two. You'd probably get better support with PCS for example, but the build quality on the HP is top notch.
      Hope that helps!

    • @subsonik1
      @subsonik1 6 років тому +1

      Hey, I'd recommend you download and play around with the ThrottleStop. Use it to undervolt the CPU and disable Turbo Boost if you don't need it (for games/workloads that aren't CPU-bound). There are other people who also apply new thermal paste to their laptop, I was never brave enough to do this, as it's a lot of work and something could always go wrong. :)
      The less pixels your GPU needs to push, the less heat it's going to generate too, so you could also lower your graphics quality and play around with settings in the Nvidia Control Panel. There are tonnes of guides on Google for this.

    I purchased this a few weeks ago from Microcenter for $999.
    My specs:
    15.6" model, CPU: i7-8750H, GPU: GTX1060, 16GB of RAM(upgradable to 32GB), 60Hz panel, 1TB HDD & 256GB SSD
    Pros:
    1. Powerful enough to play pretty much any game you want for extended periods of time
    2. Very fast loading times
    3. Plenty of storage and able to upgrade
    4. The thin bezels are a really nice feature even though its a 60Hz panel
    5. Plenty of ports and good locations
    Cons:
    1. CPU & GPU did get hot playing BO4 after awhile, however, once i undervolted they stayed between 75C-82C
    2. Fingerprints do show
    3. Screen brightness is a little dim but not a deal breaker
    4. Fans are slightly audible under no load (i normally always have headphones/headset on so this doesn't bother me but i know some people care)
    Overall thoughts:
    Really happy with this purchase and there is not much to complain about. Most of the cons are little details or have other solutions to fix them. If you are looking for a laptop around this price range, the HP Omen is providing a lot for this price. Highly recommend.

      @@korrze hi! I had some little heating issue and i managed that with an undervolting with intel XTU and thermal paste replacement, i'm not a tech guy and with some video and time, i've done it. I also use a Cooler Master NotePalU2 Plus all the time. I don't see any issues with the screen, i use an external screen most of time. I mainly use this laptop for 3D softwares and make some rendering and sometimes gaming with call of duty black ops 4. It's a low cost 3D workstation replacement for me because i didn't have bigger budget, and i don't regret to bought it. Gaming and rendering are the most heatest tasks and even if the CPU go to 90°C, gaming machine are made to support that and like i said it's not my main using with his machine. This model comes with an 8th Gen core i5 (8250u) and 8 GB if RAM, 256Gb SSD, IPS Full HD screen resolution, aluminum body, decent battery life (around 5 hours) and last but not least, a decent graphic card Nvidia MX130, all that for $699. Another version of the laptop comes with an upgraded graphic card, the MX150 which is overall 25% better than the MX130. This one will cost $800. At this point I guess I'm better with the cheaper version, since I don't want a gaming laptop.

      This is the annoying part about the HPs. You have to keep this in mind if you want an RGB k/b - ASK the sales reps (and they sometimes don't know). I returned an HP because it was only RED backlit (or off). Supposedly this is the 15" with RGB - store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/omen-laptop-15t-5tr05av-1 , but i am still not sure! Microsoft sells a 17" Omen that has an RGB k/b.

      @barkhasbadiankhbileg1840 6 років тому +3

      It depends on the price and if you don't care about the design then you have two choices: Helios 300 (2018) or HP OMEN (2018). The OMEN with 144hz screen is ~200$ more expensive than the Helios.
      For the looks go for the G7, for price to performance go for the Helios 300, and if you have the money go for the OMEN with 144hz screen.

    Got this one 4 days back, a few points to share with people looking for user reviews in the comments:
    - 144hz GTX 1070 MaxQ model, it is a beast in a small package with those specs and has GSYNC support.
    - IPS panel is brighter compared to a few laptops my friends have, probably the same panel as on the Aero 15X.
    - Footprint is very less compared to other 15' models, the vents at the back are intrusive and big for smaller backpacks, would recommend going for HP's own armored backpack .
    - Design is catchy and gamer-y, but I don't mind that, does look like a spaceship.
    - Tested GTA 5 and PUBG at ultra, managed to get over 90 fps, FIFA and CS:GO do justice to the 144hz panel.
    - Temperatures are a mess while gaming, it constantly runs at 85+ °C, the fans run so fast and loud, the laptop will just take off any moment.
    - Although completely different story at idle, CPU holds at 37-42°C, runs silent af.
    - Pretty decent battery life so far, 3-4 hrs on fill charge(no gaming).

    I purchased an Omen a few days ago. There are 3 main things I dislike about it so far.
    - Overheating easily, both the GPU and CPU reached in the mid 90's C while gaming (I'm not a huge gamer, just as well)
    - The trackpad does not get all your movements and creates a bit of frustration especial with scrolling up and down
    - The volume doesn't go loud enough, i can barely hear a movie on the loudest setting

    As an owner of this lovely laptop, I agree 100% with your review. This thing is really worth the money with all-rounder capability but yes, it runs a little hot and battery life is average. Other than that, good internals, easy access to the components (switched the 128 GB M2SSD with Samsung 970 Evo M2SSD 512 GB), 144 Hz screen, RGB Keyboard, speakers, design, etc. best bang for the buck at least in the Indian market.
