    I don't know about Australia but here in the US Joanns has heavy duty thread on smaller diameter spools.

      We can probably purchase it here but I try not to spend extra unless I really have to! So far it's held up!

    You could have used the same fabric and sewed it instead going through a large process over removing all threads cut only part which was damage use a piece of long cloth tape to sew it by turning the bag upside down
