They’re technically talking about the UCP uniform (universal camouflage pattern). ACU is army combat uniform, but both the OCP (operational camouflage pattern) and UCP patterns were still the ACU
When we got the ACU I was getting old, and my eyesight wasn’t so good, in BDU/DCUs my soldiers would hide from me in the field, but once we got the ACU my soldiers couldn’t hide any longer. I could pick them out easily in the field.

Maxime CADPAT was first issued in the Temperate Woodland pattern in 1996 as a helmet cover and a camouflage net. It became standard issue in 2002 along with the Arid Regions pattern. Prior to then we had only worn a plain Olive Drab Green coloured uniform since the 60’s.

Alot of it is also the cut/material of the uniform. The OG UCP/ACUs had an awful cut, so they often did not properly fit the soldiers well. Over time the Army started to refine the uniform a bit. The cut of the 2015-16 OCP/ACUs is much better. Now they are roling out the hot weather or tropical climate OCP/ACUs and those have the best fit yet

Let me shine some experience on yall. During daylight hours on asphalt, concrete and sand a formation of soldiers is more or less an obscure blob at a distance of a few hundred meters. I've seen it. During night time on asphalt, concrete, and sand, especially with moonlight, a formation of soldiers is damn near unnoticeable if you are not using night optics. The pixelated pattern is to make vehicle optics less effective at an approximate range of 500 meters. Obviously if you are next to a brick building or within a LOS of 200 meters camouflage patterns dont work without concealment. I appreciated the pattern for its purpose but the idea of "universal" is just about impossible for all patterns.
OMG, I joined the Army in early 1986 back then they issued us two solid green OG-107 field jackets in Basic Training. They authorized us to mix the green field jacket with the new "Elvis collar" BDU uniform. I retired in 2017 after 31 years of service in OCP uniform.
A few years back while attending a international recon exercise in the UK. I (Dutch) was grouped together with Brits and US recce guys for setting up a observation post in a wooded area. Our commander of the mixed unit was assigning roles to the squads and said to the Americans: “I want you guys in the rear positions (200m back) manning the radios, cause with that “camo” they’re gonna see us right away” - the Americans, who normally are the loudmouths and run the show, where very quiet that exercise. Those BDUs are old. The Elvis collars were just phasing out during Desert Storm and Desert Shield 1991. Lol The BDUs were a way better style uniform then the ACU. Maybe all that needed to change were adding the extra pockets.
Another fun fact about these ACU camos, is that there are way more surplus than the classic woodland camo now. I went to two army surplus stores and they had more digital camo than any other.
Someone else already mentioned the difference in who came up with Army digital uniforms. It was most likely a government kickback of money to make it happen. And then the Army decided to go to multicam. Which actually works better. Go figure. Still love the tan boots.

How about a video where the Velcro constantly gives away your position while simultaneously you loose every patch while on patrol. Because we all know that never happened.
Some general: We like the Marines uniform, but we want a different color because we're… you know…soldiers
Some colonel: But, sir, didn't we both wear the same BDUs for years… Their uniform has an effective color scheme
The general: QUIET colonel. Now, tell your soldiers to go hide behind that bush… Here's some shades
The Marines actually told the Army no because they own the patent on the MARPAT pattern.
@@erwin669 the Marines patenting MARPAT is by far the stupidest shit that's happened in the military this century... Sometimes I wonder how many people got killed in the field because of a bunch of Marine officers wanting to "stand out."
@@TheBryanScout I remember reading somewhere that some usmc brass actually said they wanted the enemy to identify and fear them...
@@TheBryanScout or do they want to stand out by NOT standing out.
Cafelogis exactly. All about vanity.
Funny, ACU came out yet when I saw anyone from SF, they were wearing woodlands in AFG.
Afgh actually had a ton of woodland surprisingly
@3:19 HAHAHAHAHAHA. That had me in stithces. Reminds me of the time when those velcro, oops sorry, hook and pile watch covers for GSHOCK were all the rage. In a tactical ORP, in a hushed/silent voice: "Hey, we have to move out by 0200hrs....what time is it now." GRRRIIRRRRPPPP It's 0130hrs. LOLOLOLOL.
I loved the boots at least...
Most comfortable and durable combat books I've ever had.
Kiwi shoes polish company probably went bankrupt
Angry Cops said it was to make all the homeless vets stand out no matter what. Which makes the most sense.
Helen Keller can spot you coming from a mile away
So can the CIA. They use them for tracking homeless vets.
"Probably hear ya too with the velcro being SO STEALTHY"
She could also hear the velcro rip from that distance.
Back when I played airsoft, I remember following the ACU guys at night so I didn’t get lost. It was pitch black out and all I could see were the ACU uniforms in front of me on the trail. They practically glowed. During daylight, ACU was always useful to help identify targets.
They’re technically talking about the UCP uniform (universal camouflage pattern). ACU is army combat uniform, but both the OCP (operational camouflage pattern) and UCP patterns were still the ACU
It blows my mind how many people (especially current or former vets) do not understand this!
Only even remotely works in the Afghan mountains with a shit load of gravel and boulders
Works better when covered in dirt
Michael Johnsonbaugh It works better when it’s in the trash. That way it’s not on a soldier, making them stand out, basically asking to be shot.
But you know what.. I came to see my gramma, and I fell asleep on the couch all damn day.. no one even knew I was there ..
And that how stolen valer started. You just went from a private to a Sargent in one velcro squeeze fest. Haha
When we got the ACU I was getting old, and my eyesight wasn’t so good, in BDU/DCUs my soldiers would hide from me in the field, but once we got the ACU my soldiers couldn’t hide any longer. I could pick them out easily in the field.
I am so glad that my days were done before the new patterns came out. BDU and DCU (Chocolate Chips) seemed to work just fine. Hell, even OD Green faded and blended with other things. But OD Green was really hideous so I'm glad that I didn't have those either. I do like the idea of not spit shining boots!!! MP's today have no idea what it was like back in 80's and 90's.
I'm glad they finally got rid of the UCP and the commie collar. I remember getting my first ACUs with the new Scorpion pattern, I didn't feel like a badly designed GI Joe anymore.
yeah i'm glad it got fazed out for ocp since if we are going to spend so much on our military we should make them more effective that being said though if i joined anything other than the coast guard i'd join the army or marine corpse of another western ally since i would be able to live in the new country
Imagine getting this garbage and then seeing a Canadian soldier who's digital pattern is based on satellite photos analysing the statistically dominant colour proportions in the intended theater of operation and has remained unchanged for the past forty years, except for 2001 when they made a desert variant. That's why you don't allow defence contractors to add planned obsolescence to you military hardware.
@@JesusFriedChrist Shh... I didn't look up any of this, it just sounded funny.
Got a TON of these from a friend because he knew that I hunt, I needed some lightweight stuff for Turkey season.... he told me flat out that I would stand out like a sore thumb and to NEVER put anything in the pockets if I needed to be quiet... he was right.
The future wars will be asymmetric conflicts that take place entirely on grandma's couch.
The 2019-'20 OCP's look waaay better than the older OCP's back from 2015!
The older ones are, I believe, called OEFCP, whereas the new ones are just OCP
@@wyattc3283 werent the older ones multi cam ?
@@harshbansal7982 MulitCam (Operation Enduring Freedom Camo Pattern)
Alot of it is also the cut/material of the uniform. The OG UCP/ACUs had an awful cut, so they often did not properly fit the soldiers well. Over time the Army started to refine the uniform a bit. The cut of the 2015-16 OCP/ACUs is much better. Now they are roling out the hot weather or tropical climate OCP/ACUs and those have the best fit yet
Yes lmao just what i needed to roll out the day🇺🇸🇺🇸
if you lay on gravel it works great
Yes, and on certain boulders in Idaho.
And grandma's couch, too!
The only thing the ACUs blended into was gravel and that one couch
That's hilarious, I've always called it the minecraft pattern, if we were fighting in the mines of minecraft we would all be safe.
I feel personally attacked, all the way down to my damn name

ngl watching these videos made me 100% realize the last 15+ years was an absolute clusterfk ripe with government spending for unecessary items that only lined the pockets of the politicians of the last two decades, while good guys and gals died for a planned "war".
You missed a zero there, chief. I think you meant to say the last 150 years
😂 his confused look completely sold the video. Absolutely hilarious
“You left your patch Sgt “ I died😂 can’t tell you how many times I took my buddy’s flags
"sgt your patch" LOL....seen many mountain patches on privates go missing
Showing my age here,I wore only 2 different uniforms during my time in. 1st was Olive Drab,2nd was Woodland Camo.
Sorry to nit-pick, but you rolled your sleeves wrong. That's how the Marines rolled them back in the day, not the Army.
They knew....
I'm in the German Reserves and was part of the staff during a Military Competion when ACU was first issued.
Our position was about 400-500 metres away from the point the competioners left the woods.
It was hard to identify there nationality, until the US Army enters the scene.
One of my lads askes my why they wear this camouflage in Central Europe, He thaught it was Just to replace the DCU, "No, someome told them it would work in every conditions..."

@@peoplescentralservicecommi2871 Can't tell you how many times they did that too me. Even did it to me with my Multicams on my Deployment in 2017. They were still phasing in the new uniforms and I got a mix of OCP FRAC-Us and Multicams. It was annoying because you can never tuck the little f*ckers in for very long u till they popped back out.
It could be worse. It seems like right after I got out (2001), the Navy became the Oregon Ducks of the Armed Forces as far as uniform changes go.
Ah yes. The worst uniform in US history. We should have stuck with BDUs.
@Harkon Takala And to add salt to the wound, the new stuff ain't much better. Still worse than M81.
Dcu's
yes so true the bdu were better
I still have a pair of my OD Greens and several pairs of Woodland and Desert BDU. Glad I retired before the velco nightmare!!
There were also alot more active Soldiers during the iraq war then there were in the 80s-90s, hence more uniform demand.
Someone else already mentioned the difference in who came up with Army digital uniforms. It was most likely a government kickback of money to make it happen. And then the Army decided to go to multicam. Which actually works better. Go figure. Still love the tan boots.
Thank You Spreading Telling The Truth About The UNIFORM And Funny Videos I Love It 😁
"Sarge why are they not tan?"
"Because private we spent 3.4 million dollars on this design and sure as shit we ain't gonna pay double that for double effectiveness"
This is when you have high level leaders whos buddies get the first multi billion dollar contract...and than their buddies get the second contract to "correct the mistake"...dishing out all the taxpayer monies to their rich homies so they can get that cushy job on the Board of Directors of Lockeed Martin when they get out.
Think about it, a bit coincidental at just how much gov screws up aint it?
Well sounds like you have read "war is a racket" by Smedley Butler.
The ACU isn’t to blend in with your environments, it’s to blend in with your dead comrades cause someone thought blue in the desert was a good idea
The only good thing about the UCP was that it stained easily, so if you got sweaty and dusty it blended in after a few weeks.
Honestly, the army should have just died some green and some ran and be done with it. No reason to get rid of them.
Hodges: "This is blue."
Me: "What are you, colorblind?"
And I'm over here in the air force still wearing damn near the same pattern because that's what I was issued 10 months ago. God damn it.
But the new ones, it’s worth it
They where designed to camouflage you from your masculinity.
Bro when the velcro got caught I lost it I did like the material of the ACU pattern and the muti cams but the new summer OCPs are nice
The only thing that blends in is $5 Billion dollars worth of research.
I remember when Air Force ABUs came out back in 2008. I love the new OCPs, but miss the BDUs. We played this game too.
I pressed and starched the heck out of my old BDUs every day. That wrinkle-free material would have been great.
okay, i lost it at the ".......im lost sergeant..." lmfao.
Lmao! This is exactly how I imagined this transition
Your imitation of a private is spot on
Canada: "Hey guys check out my new camo, I call it CADPAT"
USMC: "Dude that's sick mind if I borrow that and change it for my guys?"
Canada: "sure go ahead eh"
US Army: "Guys look I made it grey"
USMC: "Uh... That doesn't blend in with anything"
US Navy: "MINE DOES"
Dude, I thought everyone burned those already when the army switched back to the old camo
Why burn them when you can make some money back at your local surplus store?
Whats crazy is that I've heard the patter than the OCPs are largely based on was created back in the late 50s
@@jomiles3605 OCP is like the WW2 duck camo pattern but in Woodland’s color scheme.
I must look like a damn psycho sitting in my car laughing hysterically at this in a parking lot
My drill sergeant said that the only thing you can blend in with in ACUs is a pile of gravel lol
True I never understood how that was supposed to keep us camouflaged in the desert of Iraq or the mountains of afganistan lol.
The first times we wore acu unifforms wiht velcro we used to hide and twist the others patches or stick each others by te arms...

Yikes😬
Profiles like that are handed out like candy
I fucking cringed everytime I saw that
I was kind of happy i got out in 03 when my older brother showed me the new uniforms he had to deal with still. I was speechless.
Reading through the comments I just have to wonder , you didn’t have to shine the boots, press the uniform, and spend $20 on getting patches sewn on. Should have been around for the black beret debacle
I've watched this video a couple times, and it never fails to make me laugh.
Looks like I left the Army just in time. 🤣
I don't care what anyone says, when you see Rangers and SF wear it, it looks badass.
So soldiers don't have to shine boots or get a ton of starch ironed into their uniforms anymore...that was like half my enlistment...
We did away with the buttons on the trouser pockets because the velcro pockets will absolutely stay closed in the sandy environment. Even when full. In fact... the fuller, the better.
Who ever came up with acu I hope was on the receiving end of an accidental discharge of a howitzer. Isn’t there evidence that it actually git soldiers killed?
1:25 That is literally any RPG video game when you find 2 pieces of gear with amazing stats, but they don't visually match :)
Common sense says: have one uniform that represents the branch of the military you belong to while in states and issue a change of uniform depending on the deployment location and time of mission.
