    What if, in the first ending Manly got, the Sandman knocked out Sofie so that Robert would stop hurting her. That could also be why Will thought she wasn't breathing. She was in such a deep sleep that she was barley breathing at all.
    It's just weird that the Sanman didn't help her out because, as we saw with the dogs in The Boggey Man, if Sofie is in danger then the Sandman will help her.

      I think Sandman stop Sophie time so that's why Will see her not breathing since her time is stop~

    I kind of feel like Will's imaginary friends (aside from Pop) were a bit underused. I thought they would appear more often to Will and have more to do with the story, but each of them appear once, don't do much, and never show up again (except the dog in that one Bad End). Oh well.

    • @bibepomp
      @bibepomp 7 років тому +47

      Yeah, Murdoc appears on Sophie's back after the argument and in the flashback to let the player know that Will associates acting angrily on impulse with the character, however, doesn't play much else in the game, nor does he blame what he does on the doll anymore than he blames himself.. They kinda were there to act as a reason to put flashbacks and backstory, and then never really get mentioned after.

    • @kazaki03
      @kazaki03 7 років тому +30

      I also wanted a scene where Will gathers each and every one of them, possibly to "confirm" to himself that all of them represent a "part of him". It's something that Will has to do - to accept himself and his weakness and then move on by trying to remedy it - and that would mean all of his "friends" working together. I'm just suggesting because I have a similar "system" of "friends" like Will.
      Before, I guess I didn't want to accept them because some of them came from negative emotions, but I realized that it was necessary to "let go" some things that make you who you are. E.g. I have two "main" guardians who are like the typical "angel vs. devil" thing, but both of them now work together to make me a better person - a balance of black and white.
      I read from Uri's 100 game tidbits that TSM and THM are complete opposits (stay a kid vs. grow up), and I'm actually doing a bit of both. I'm 26 and I'm not ashamed to have those "friends", because they are a necessary step to affirming yourself - your strengths and weakness, and for you to have a little more confidence in yourself. Because in reality, we are all alone and "happiness is our job - we just need someone to share it with" (read from an old SMS quote).

    let my huge rambling begin...
    so i read a recent translation of vgperson about uri 100 secret game tibbids (which is... a lot of it) and i found out the secret of will "friends":
    1. mime represents will's fear of dark or unexpected events
    2. misery represents his sadness of being alone.
    3. captain murdoc represents is irriation of not being able to get along with others.
    4.old billy represent will's desire for someone he can put his trust on.
    5.pop is a role of "an ideal father" after will get in terms of his father's death.
    sophie's in college and working on a cafe along with regan (as you can plainly see at the beggining of the game). it's unknown why regan follow her tho. also the "things" you see through the game represent his fear of doing something wrong. also, uri says that will is sorts of a "late bloomer"...
    anyways, i'm hoping for the spin-off to be good as well, uri said one is serious, and one is silly.
    edits: i feel like the fact that keith is lying is also the same case with the bad end "out of the window". keith said that sophie was just injured, but he ran away after saying that. so i guess he did lie at that ending. and the good end 1, too...

      In the extra scence, David told Will to become a good man to see his dad again someday. Pop represent a fingure , a person who he can trust and rely on. Pop came to Will after the funeral so I think Pop could be based on David, or at least a part of him that Will could remember

    I feel like the second good or "true" ending is much better. It's like a proper growing up and coming of age kind of things. Will doesn't need Pop anymore so he's off on his journey, similar to his father as described.
    And just like it was said before, Pop NEVER lied to Will.

    I just imagine David running around bragging about his cute little brother and everyone else being like "Omg David plz stop."
    David is also my fave character. Not only is he the most relateable- his story is objectively the best one. I feel like the two newest additions to the series tried too hard to tie into the realism- while the first one definitely tried to go for a more emotional ending. Just my opinion :v

      For me, THM was the most engaging one and I didn't feel like it "tried too hard". I also love David and can relate to him, but something about Will's character captured me even more. I guess it all depends on personal experience, which story really gets you because all four of them were constructed perfectly.

      LimeDot indeed.
      btw i'm pretty curious, what's your rank for the strange men series from the best to the least ?
      mine is :
      1. the crookedman ( the best one when it comes to story. i like all of its characters though the gameplay ranks third in my list )
      2. the boogieman ( second when it comes to story... if only the antagonist isn't a big meh... man i love the love story and struggles between keith and helena. first, when it comes to gameplay. the creatives puzzles are fun and challenging to solve. )
      3. the sandman ( i actually like the idea of the story but because it's more of a fantasy rather than a horror one, this is why i put it in the third rank when it comes to story. second when it comes to gameplay. )
      4.the last one but also the least... the hanged man ( it's good in bith story and gameplay but it lacks tension and will isn't as remarkable not likeable as the other mc of the strange men series. the gameplay too... the map is rather repetitive. )

    These endings made me super emotional. While this game is not my favorite out of the series, the two that I love the most being The Crooked Man and The Boogie Man, this still was a strong game on its own and I could connect with Will. The voice acting definitely improved too (Ed's was great especially) and while there was a lot of empty space, less spooks, overall it was an interesting game to end a series that I've always loved and enjoyed.

    Ed deserved better. He wanted to be happy and in that one bad ending he could have gotten the help he needed and everything would have been fine. But rob never listened and didn't let his brother have a say in what HE wanted to do. Robs intentions were good, he cared for his lil brother Ed, but he never took into account what's Ed wanted. Ed could have been happy in that ending, but rob ruined it all. Rob was stuck in the past and couldn't get over what there father did to them, he couldnt forgive himself for abandoning Ed with his father either. Rob ruined everything for Ed.

    Despite people calling THM a “weak” game (probably as weak as Will), well, usually it’s nearly everybody’s opinion on imaginary friends. People who have imaginary friends are often called weak, because they “run away” from reality. However, this is not always the case. Imaginary friends can sometimes be called “therapy friends”, and this is why some psychiatrists actually allow even adults to have them. It’s a way of “getting through tough times” when nobody is around you.
    Imagine you’re in a deserted island, like in the movie “Castaway”. You’d probably go out of your mind if you don’t talk to someone, hence the protagonist ended up making WILLson (maybe that’s where Uri got the name? haha).
    Other than the lack of scary stuff, I think Uri’s main focus on the series is not the horror, but on the internal conflict of each character. I feel I relate to both Will and David the most out of all the games, since I can be too nice like David and I’m too imaginative like Will. Also, yes I do have a "system" of imaginary friends like what Will does, but unlike his, mine work together, because I recognize each and every one of them as a part of me, even if they come from negative emotions.
    Overall, I think that THM was a great game. It’s probably not as good as TCM, but it’s definitely something I’ll remember for a long time, like Gakkou Gurashi, Sucker Punch, and especially like Inside Out (maybe Uri’s inspired by this too?).

I love how we see a progression of David (the first StrangeMen protagonist) being followed by the other two later protagonists before they all meet up with Will at the end. It's such a bittersweet send-off of an awesome series! The music Manly put in the background only adds to it, unless that's the actual soundtrack, but I think his little note indicated that he swapped it out to avoid copyright. Great replacement choice though if it was! The happy beat only doubled the feels for me

    I don't really see why some people don't think the true end is the better one. sure, its a bit more bittersweet but it makes much more sense than good end 1
    I always figured that will never really fully believed what he was saying in the first play through and good end 1 shows that very well in a subtle way where will gets so caught up thinking the rat is pop that he's completely blind to it not being the same rat, and he'll continue to believe that's so, "trapped in his own world" and presumably never really growing as a person

    At first I was kinda lost of where the whole point of the hanged man despite the literal one that Will talked to. But I later see what that hanged man meant...
    The whole world is a good and bad place to be in. Its literally a world of suffering, and all of that suffering goes into a circle; just like a rope tied around your neck. All that suffering and pointing the "Its all my fault" finger is the suffering that suspends the person upside down. Not coming to terms and going with extreme yet crazy thoughts without being brave is the person in a near state of doom in that rope. Only if the person overcomes this is when the rope is lose for them to be back upside up with feet on the ground. That sense of relief is the change that helps the person to grow up; much like how Will felt. In a way...The ritual is nothing but a mere bust of keeping the suffering in that rope forever and ever. In the other sense like a metaphor, Will in the bad end, Keith, Sophie, Robert, Ed are also hanged in the rope of suffering.

    This was lacking a lot. I really wanted to see a lot more of Wills imaginary friends and learn more about them and tie them into the plot more. I love the "hanged man" character that shows up twice (once in the past and once in a bad end) and thought his presence was done perfectly in either variations. Overall, this could have been /way/ better because there was a lot more potential and I'm disappointed it turned out the way it did.
    Also I was waitin for a nod back to the Sandman the entire time like with Sandman popping up at the end of the Boogie man, like, we had a whole bad end where Sophie nearly dies and nothing to show for it to nod back to her game? Dang.

    I prefer the 2nd good end. It's better for the rat to be dead and not come back. It makes a bit more sense that way, instead of a *net ex-machina* nonsense. It also shows that pops, the rat, really did care for him and tried to protect him. Even if he couldn't talk, he really was his friend... and that's pretty heartwarming knowing that pet really cared for him. Their bond wasn't in his head, even if his words might have been.

    Thanks for the vid, Manly! I was looking forward to seeing all the endings! ^^ Honestly, I did feel this game had too many empty rooms, etc. I see the reason why now (considering how you have to run away from Ed and work your way out of the building towards the end) but though having that one bit of the game be better by having more buildings, the rest of the gameplay is lacking since alot of it invovles searching empty rooms that are there with no purpose. I will admit, there were alot of empty rooms in the crooked man, but in that game, the rooms without purpose were locked and stayed locked (though most rooms in that game were eventually used for something).
    My personal list for the order of the strange men series (top is best, bottom is least):
    Crooked man
    At this moment Sandman and Boogieman are equal. I'd have to go through them again to see which one I thinm is better.
    And lastly the hanged man.
    Just as you said, I think near the end of this game & the endings is the most interesting part of this game. The start and middle were kind of boring (Empty rooms..).
    One of the things I've really liked about these games are the endings, and the endings for this game were great!
    Keep up the good work, Manly! :D

    I really enjoyed The Hanged Man. I mostly agree with you on the lineup of the four games, only differencing in personal bias. Even if it is technically the weakest, I probably enjoyed THM more than TBM (I haven't personally played TSM), but thats probably due to my bias to Will.
    I really loved Will as a character (even if he had his worse moments). Maybe because I can relate to him more than the others (our age gap isn't that big either), maybe because I am more of an "angsty teen xd" than I thought ha. Also, I really like his design. I think the snowy setting helps to it a lot, too, even if we dont see it much.
    This game ended up being a lot different than I expected, with it starting with a more silent Will and all, but I'm fine with it. I do wish it had more to do with the supernatural, the Hanged Man/supernatural in general aspect was really underused in my opinion. The atmosphere of the area and fear of the unknown did make me feel unsettled during my first play (I am weak and dont play much horror games), but it was no TCM when it came to that - there wasn't really any overlooming threat that would pop out and chase you. As I said, the Hanged Man aspect held great opportunities. At least we got one of my favorite scenes in the series (Will, Sophie, Keith and ghosts).
    Gameplay wise, I have to agree too. I had to use walkthroughs often because I did a puzzle after going to the room where the completed puzzle would trigger a scene (a clear example is Keith's ring+library part in which I had no idea completing a puzzle would trigger a scene in the library where I had already gone and found nothing in). I wish the rooms had more spooky aspects to them (patient stories or something), since there could be a lot of chances (especially in building 3-4?) for that. All those empty rooms with empty shelves...shudder.
    And the ending business. The 2nd playthrough did seem unnecessary, but oh well. I did quite like all the endings though. As you said, could've been better, but it's not bad by any means.
    I kinda wish we could see more Will and David, I think they will have a nice brotherly bond.
    I'd say THM was a nice ending to the series, even if it isn't perfect. Uri and co. did a good job! Manly's playthrough was also great, thank you for your hard work with all the editing and such!
    (what a long comment)

    • @kazaki03
      @kazaki03 7 років тому +4

      TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!!
      THM is my second favorite game. People only call it "weak" because of Will and his "imaginary friends". People think of imaginary friends as a sign of being weak, but it's not always like that. Will became strong because he was guided by Pop. All those other friends posed as a challenge to know his weakness (e.g. fear of the darkness, hatred for society, deep sadness etc.) and he realized that he can be something bigger if he just had the courage to save his real friends and loved ones.
      I'd like to think of Pop and Will's relationship as a Jiminy Cricket and Pinocchio thing. All of us have that inner voice telling us what to do or to keep us from getting bored when there's no one to talk to - that's how imaginary friends are born. Will was always alone and that's why he made them. People who call Will as a weirdo are the ones to blame why he stuck to his imaginary friends more than other people, because imaginary friends are nicer than most people who don't understand what others are going through.

      Pop was the rat which attacked Rob. He died. In one bad end, old Billy has confirmed that. In the second good end, Keith said that he didn't want to lie to a child, and David said that he didn't have to, so he didn't. He came to Will and said the rat was gone and he couldn't find it, which was not a lie.

    I feel like the true actually evil person you could say, is Rob, Ed was mentally unstable due to everything he had to go to, and the routes where he thinks he killed his father are the only routes he truly snaps and tries to murder Will and Keith, on the other endings it is just, Rob wanting to kill everyone for the sake of his brother, even going as far as killing without hesitation and threatening a child with murdering him and his whole family, scarring him for life, while his brother is begging him to stop. Even if he was doing this to protect Ed, he did things consciously and willingly, so he is actually the real villain on the long run.

    Thus the Hanged Man ends, and the Strange Men series with it. I quite like these games as a whole, and my stance on which are the best is mostly the same as yours (I like the Boogie Man nearly as much as the Crooked Man, mainly due to Keith). This isn't the strongest ending to go out on, but I still like Will and feel he's a good fourth protagonist for the games. Whatever Uri ends up doing next, I'll be looking forward to it. whoa I like the tiny rat journey ending. I was already suspicious that the covered rat is pop and he gave replacement rat in the first good end. An even better ending would be if Will is not fragile is for Keith to tell the truth, as he should've done much earlier, and they bury it properly so that Will realizes that the whole distracting Ed idea is from himself thus being self confident.
    but lol that sophie makes every ending worse, even guns stop working properly because of her 😂

    I'm a little disappointed this is how the Strange Man series "ends chronologically". Maybe because I expected something extremely grandiose involving the previous cast and that there was something overly supernatural pulling strings in relation to all the "men" in the series...even though all (expect Sandman) ended up being some form of mental illness/degeneration to the main cast that they've overcome. I still felt maybe the "Hanged Man" or eventually some other "Man" was an actual driving force that caused everything and bringing the cast together.
    But...that's me.
    Regardless of me, Sophie's "Love Jewel" is still missing/unresolved...and i can't imagine her living too happily without being able to love someone...then again, Helena's talk with her in Boogie Man implies that Sophie (and over humans) can replace them...then again, Helena was using metaphor and there isn't any way she would know about the jewels....
    ...right? O_o

The only ones who’s names don’t start with M are the ones who were real animals. Also, Will’s last name starts with an M too. Neat.

    yeah I agree with all your criticisms. If the devs read this comment all I can suggest is go back and reevaluate your old work because it feels like the world building got a bit off track and the series went from being a horror one to just a visual novel basically. There's no tension in this game and almost no scares, its mostly just interested in telling Will's story. This is fine in itself but the shift in tone makes people that came in as fans of the Crooked Man somewhat disappointed.
    Its certainly as bad as say that Gritty Bomberman game that came out years ago in terms of fucking up what people enjoyed about it but the game could have been way better if it was more like its predecessors.

    • @kazaki03
      @kazaki03 7 років тому +10

      I think Uri (the author) intentionally just wanted to focus on storytelling rather than the actual gameplay from the beginning of TCM. Most female creators (like me) tend to focus more on storyline rather than on gameplay aspects, horror and the like. My first RPG Maker game was a badly-done horror-puzzle game, but I realize that the "horror game" thing is just a fad - I like horror stories but I like the story better than the jumpscares and the gameplay aspect.
      I'm the kind of person who likes playing games mostly due to either the story or the music (since I'm a composer as well). I don't really care much about the other elements, and I think that might be the case for Uri as well. I agree with most that TSM, TBM and THM were just "downsliding" in terms of both horror and gameplay quality, but hey, it happens to creators once in a while. It's called the "sequel effect" in which most of the sequels in movies are worse than their predecessors. Or sometimes, it could also be an "artist block" due to stress or lack of inspiration.

    _You can't look in the hearts & minds of others for your happiness ~ Hunter Thompson_
    Although his meeting the Hanged Man enabled him to “talk” with entities, I think it's more rational to think that the entities were representations of truths Will knew... because children often do know more about what’s going on than we think they do. But there was a tinge of the supernatural to some of his revelations, because he did have the ability to see “shadow figures’ around that building.
    Really, whether imaginary friends or supernatural, the game was about a boy’s journey in becoming a man, dealing with loss, & understanding that life is meant to be lived. A nice wrap-up to the series & nice to see many characters again. But overall, it was not my favorite of Uri's games.

Absolutely ridiculous. And if David really wanted to be a part of Will's life he should have been there for him since the beginning so I can't believe Will's sudden acceptance of him. Also the true ending and the good ending makes no sense, if Keith lied to Will about Pop"s death how in the good end did he find a rat who had a crooked leg and a missing patch of fur that looked exactly like Pop?! Bottom line: everyone in this game (yes including golden boy David) is an asshole.

Then I watched the third game of the series which is better than the second (but they are close in my rating). Though I say this, these mentioned games will never hold a candle against The Crooked Man.
    But I have to say that the last installment of the Strange Men series leaves a lot to be desired. Even though I feel a lot of disappointment, I can't quite pinpoint what is wrong exactly. Nevertheless, thank you Uri for the games and thank you ManlyBaddassHero for the showcase and hardwork.

    I feel the same too honestly manly. I prefer all the other ones compared to this one, they were better in gameplay. More interaction with the world and the characters. This one felt dull, but it was still pretty good in some scenes. I actually knew Keith was lying the moment he was silent as he lay the cover over it. He's a good guy.
    I also really wish Will's other friends showed up more at the very least, helped. I even wanted an end where one or all of them would show up to fend off Ed. Cause Will was kind to them no matter what. I'm also a bit biased to the supernatural I wish it had more of a part here.

    You know what in all the strange men games all of them were a threat but the hanged man... like a physical threat it kind of makes me cheesed that he doesn't chase you or anything

    Aww poor Ed, so adorable, I don't care if he is a psychopath, I still like him, I'll adopt him.

    This is some heavy stuff... I like the true ending though. I wonder where Pop will end up next?
    Also, is it me or does Ed have a taller sprite than everyone else?

    Wait so the real pop is dead? And in the 2nd good ending it's only Will's imagination that he saw Pop? While in the 1st good ending Keith lied?
