  • College student Maya had the eye-opening opportunity to take a class through Gateways, an education programming that enables incarcerated youth to learn alongside college students. In this episode of Gateways, Daniel explores the flaws of and benefits of the rehabilitation system during incarceration. When asked what he misses most on the outside? His mom's cooking.

    You can see the pain and hurt in his eyes. That’s what ages him most. The years he has seen through his eyes. Even though he 20 years old.

      He was in pain even at 16 years old, we were walking around the yard talking about cars and car audio systems . I remember him telling me how he missed bumping his alpine type R 12 and how he had plans to build a big system when he gets out, the kid has a good head on his shoulders and hopefully he'll be out soon

      I was from a rival gang from the same town. I grew up around the time his older brother got gunned down in 2009. I think that’s what led him to follow his brothers foot steps.

    “Gangs target children because they know that those minds are easily manipulated, and once that mind is molded to the gang lifestyle, there’s no changing it back” YES. 100% agree! Especially for children who grow up without supervision, a broken home or suffer some type of abuse. When the people who were supposed to protect you in this world neglect you, a child is bound to look for an alternative for protection, guidance, love and belonging.

    i went here when I was 15 years old ...for a minor in possession charge , a misdemeanor. I was supposed to get sent to a different youth camp like medium security facility but they were full....so I got stuckk at this maximum green hill school , a 15 year old bookworm Hispanic kid , locked up with 20 21 year old drive by shooters and killers and such .needless to say i has never been around so many violent dudes . My roommate who looked after me and took me under his wing was there for shooting someone in the head. I got along with most of these guys tho, you wouldn't ever think they would so what some of the did to get in there , they were so damn chill . in retrospect , I feel like being in the midst of this kind of culture and influence kind of chiseled away at some of my moral boundaries and inhibited a kind of criminal aspect in me, where as before I was just a kid who liked to drink . I still don't regret going there tho, and meeting some of these kids. You wouldn't think somebody locked up for homicide would be so easy to get along , where as somebody in there for much lesser crimes is such a goddamn immature pain in the ass lol

    • @chuckmclaughlin9490
      @chuckmclaughlin9490 3 роки тому

      When but 13 years old I was determined "incorrigible" and sent to a juvenile camp for the horrible "crime" of ditching two weeks of school! I had no prior record of arrests, vandalism, threats of or acts of violence...zip! Others at the camp were attempted murderers, rapists, thieves and, like me, kids just caught up in a lousy juvenile system. In those days, 1940, they had truant officers whose job was to track down and arrest juvenile offenders of school attendance laws. We were forced to use ten pound sledge hammers to break up granite rocks for road construction and small "single jacks" to break up these rocks into gravel-size stones, all under the blazing sun up in the Sierra Navada Mountains in Southern California. Many of us passed out from exhaustion and the heat. If you violated any rule, the camp officers would make you chew lye soap until you could spit it out through your teeth. Left a bad scar in my mouth. If you tried to run away and were caught, you were sent to even worse places reserved for nonconforming kids. Got released after five months and four days. Went back to school but dropped out when 16 and joined the Merchant Marines and sailed in the South Pacific during World War ll. Looking back on those hellish days in the camp, I consider myself one of the lucky ones...those who didn't go on to become criminals or drug addicts.
