everyone I know basically grew up that way. no father.. mom too busy w/work& boyfriends..no money for anything but essentials. i know i did. everyone has a story. everyone knows what murder is, and what comes of murderers. I'm sure he's a victim in his own ways...but, he killed somebody. he said himself "he wanted fresh cloths & watches."

Which is 75 years and as soon he turns 18 prison although if u can show that while in jevnille that u can act decent no trouble. They allow teens stay in jevnille until right before they turn 20 years old

@@jasong428 That would be impossible. It wouldn't be enough blood. The blood would also seep through the paper. And if drawing on a wall it would smear and not look right. For a wall you'd need tons of layers of blood and there just wouldn't be enough for that. And before you even finished the blood of the person you where using will probably dry. Blood dries pretty fast.

I just came out almost 2 days ago. I've really haven't been a "behavioral kid". More on the recovery side of childhood trauma. The DJJ I was at, was a place where I could reflect on my coping and my emotional side. That last time I was there I saw from my point of view made me feel sorrow for others and myself. Somewhere there I could feel hope. It wasn't nice at all. But it did take plenty of time to just start recovery since the age of 11 starting with "mental facilities" . Each time that came back from a "program" or a "facility". Life felt good for a moment, then it would come back to hit me again because I would dwell and not reflect on others or myself mainly. I've went through a lot mentally challenging things, not meaning I had the worse; no not at all. But it took a while in order to not get lost into a lot of desires or "common" addictive behaviors. And so far so good. I've been doing way better then ever. -- You can have a hard life, But make sure to treat life good.
i went to juvie once when i was 17. some Crip dude told me "you'll be back. they always come back." i laughed to myself and said fuxk that not me. Thankfully i kept my own word to myself. Free man since then im 25 now phew!! taste that freedom haha
I said the same shit when i first went to juvie and the crips told me the same thing the buildin was on the eastside haha but its krazy kuz every time i went back i ran into some of the same crips ha.
I had to serve a year an honestly it was all mentally painful. I could've been celebrating my brothers birthday I could've gone to my first day of high school I could've tried out for soccer but I guess it was all worth it in the end cause now I'm better an my life won't EVER be the same an I'm way to cautious about things now.

Not to many people get lucky enough to get juvenile life for what they did as a kid, instead they get locked away forever. I’m glad this dude will be able to come home one day, I just hope the people around him do the best they can to help him stay away from going back for good

I served 7 1/2 years in mount meigs in Montgomery Alabama in 23 hour lockdown. I was 11 years old when I went in and came out a week shy of my 18th birthday. 23 hour lockdown ruined me , it trained me to live inside my mind and block the world out. It has major effects and takes a major toll on your mind. It wasnt until I had kids that I realized the world was much greater then the mindset I put myself in inside of that cell.
I have spoken to someone about my dark moments with my parents and I’m proud of it, my dad recently got out of a mental hospital a week ago due to personal issues, I’m glad he seeked help. But when your charged with 2nd degree murder, you need to understand and ask yourself, “what will this do, how can it affect me, and why did I do it”. Some people don’t think about it and don’t understand. And yet this 17 (most likely 18 or 19) is seeking help in a secure way.
Hopefully he will be able to rehabilitate and turn things around if he gets out one day I hope this young man gets into selling his art he’s got talent

As a sociology major researching the relationship between education and incarceration, I was appalled at the way both systems are dealing with children. Zero Tolerance Policy should be banned. It only increases further the number of people imprisoned. It doesn't help the children from low income families; due to the fact they will most likely to have "deviant" behavior. Therefore they are also the most targeted to be suspended and/or expelled from schools as well as sent to correctional facilities. That is absolute bullshit. Most delinquents aren't murderers. For the large part, they are simply kids who have behavior problems. They talk back, resist orders, or have contraband( usually drugs and alcohol). Zero Tolerance Policy DOES NOT HELP THEM. It cuts them off from the society, and essentially abandoning them. The education system is so corrupt. This is what they call School To Prison Pipeline; a result that funnels children into incarceration. IS THIS HOW EDUCATION SHOULD BE? NO. There should be programs in schools. Mentor-ship for these troubled teens. Deep down, this kids needed love and attention; something that is difficult to obtain from low-income families due to parents working 12-16 hours a day to feed their kids. Parents don't have time to spend with their kids, like what that kid said in the video. These kids need mentors to look after them and guide them to the right path. THAT is education. Not throw them away, abandoned in correctional institutions where no one gives two fucks about them. This is how many criminals are born from; youth incarceration. These kids have strikes across their names, therefore it becomes very difficult for them to get into higher education. Pretty tough to get into college if they have a criminal record already. By that point, society has abandoned them. They are pretty much labelled as criminals across the board, even if deep down they are good people. Hence they become what society wants them to become; criminals. Also by that point, these kids have been accustomed to their treatment; they lose trust in the government, they lose trust in people with higher power, and of course have no love for the police. They are hateful towards people of power; creating a sort of resistance against them, crime. If people aren't going to help them get their needs, they will get their needs by taking from others. What's 1-5 years of prison to them when they have been imprisoned in their youth? They know the system. So much of today's societal problems stem from the relationship between education and incarceration. Government spending has increased in correctional facilities meanwhile education facilities and programs are being shut down. College is massively expensive and over priced. K-12 schools are being shut down to make way for new correctional facilities to alleviate growing inmates. Not to mention, PRISONERS EAT BETTER THAN SCHOOL CHILDREN. When prisoners eat better than school children, it means they have way more funding than education. US has their priorities wrong. To make proper citizens, you need to invest more money on their education and create programs to help create upstanding citizens. Prevention is the best way to combat criminal activity. It's THE ONLY way. We can't eliminate crime completely; that's idealism. Realistically, we can reduce inmates from 2 million incarcerated to back to 500,000 inmates. Probably even reduce it even more. A mere 8% of government spending in US education is a disgrace of what's considered the most powerful country in the world. I hope people become more and more aware of this fact. We are already contain the world's most incarcerated population, this is America's biggest irony. After all, we're supposed to be the land of the free.
Did time here. Place honestly still haunts me today. i did my time on the hill, got in trouble and did some 48 hour bids in the max. I can still remember the way it smells, i recognize the halls and rooms. When I left Virginia, I felt relief, knowing I was far away from there. It changed me, for the better by the worst means.

I used to play for the bon air Olympic team. That includes soccer, swimming, track, high jump. I got medals in all. Man I was a kid but still fucking it up. I miss this bon air sometimes i mean it sucked being locked but My life wasn't as bad as now.

I remember my brother telling me a story. A students bedroom was searched for unknown reasons. This kid had a note saying he was threatening to hurt some students in my grade. The kid is not in Juvi but this is the reason why some have to appreciate these places.
I’ve did time in a place like this when I was 14. I was charged with assault battery robbery and possession of a stolen vehicle and did 18 months for it and it was the worst thing I’ve ever been through. I had to stay in my cell 23 hours a day
Got locked up when I was 14 had to do 2 years for brutally beating a girl up with brass knuckles all because her and her gang jumped my younger sister who was only 11 at the time they were 15 and up it was a mental process to go thru i cried everyday lost my baby in their and I got jumped on my 2nd day all because i was the new girl i kept my head high had my highs and Lowe's I stuck through it tho it changed me alot 💯💯

I'm from Portsmouth VA and currently studying to be an academic teacher for the youth. It is an extremely rough area where kids don't get presented many opportunities to break the statistic.
Just got out a week ago spent 3 years in djj in Atlanta Georgia. I’m 17 now. It sucked so much because my family lived 7 hours south of where I was housed at. Visitations were only on Saturday so I never got to spend thanksgiving or Christmas with my family. So I wanna say to any of y’all out there doing the stupid shit - stop now why you can because it may seem like all fun and games but once your in there for 2 months it feels like a year I was in my cell daily in and out for 21 hours a day 7 days a week alone and every night for three years I cried my self to sleep. So please if sum bothering you talk to someone you don’t have to act out to prove your point be tbh I would hate it so damn much if I knew someone close to me. Had to go through that shit
Keeping someone locked in by themselves is truly horrible. These are kids!!! They aren’t fully grown. Most of you saying this kid needs to stay or deserves being put in a 4 wall cell are so uneducated. Think about where you were when you were 18 or 19? The system makes MONEYYYYY. They can careless about your well being or even rehabilitation. I know I was locked in the county jail spending most of my time by myself if I didn’t have a roommate. I cried everyday and I thought about suicide. I came out and it did nothing but make me angry and fustrated. If someone knows anything about this kid please let me know I wanna get in touch.
I have mental problems with anxiety and depression. The system did nothing but hurt me and make me worse. I just turned 20 and having issues like this in my day to day life is so unhealthy especially at my age. 18 or 19 year olds if you don’t rehabilitate them and just stick them in a box you will more than likely reoffend. If you have never been incarcerated and grew up with the “struggles” of growing up do not say one word. You have no idea.
And to add he PLEADED guilty it doesn’t necessarily mean he killed a person I read the article and he was part of a robbery that went wrong. They gave him a deal which they also do in high cases like this to scare the kids from taking it to trial (which btw the court systems rather not take the cases to trial in fear of the defendant winning.) society is so messed up to think anyone under the age of 21 is okay to be locked up confined like this boy here.

I work in a youth Behavior facility for ages 6-18. The kids have been traumatized by rape, abuse, a parents death, etc. Most kids can't see their parents because the facility takes in kids from all over the country. They can live-chat on the computer with their therapist & family, though. These kids are very manipulative, most have been in the system their whole life. Many have committed a series of crimes--rape, murder or attempted murder--others are too violent to be in the public domain. One thing so many of these kids lack is empathy. Their families never taught it, or there's something wrong with their brain that they just don't get it. If a child becomes 17 or 18, and they have been accused of a crime, they may go straight to detention or prison. Most kids arrive in shackles. Some go home to their families, some don't want to go home to their families so they may go to a 1/2 way house. If they don't go through the program successfully, the will likely never be accepted in the community.
That boy got talent, 3/4 of the guys i have met in my time behind bars have really good qualities but we tend to over see them and throw them out the window and totally screw ourselves over

The units where kids that got into fights were able to see us in those tiny scratched up windows. I almost got Written up for fist bumping a homie in the cell with a window. Lmfao man them times were tuff. Especially since I missed two Christmas. They didn't have where a family could come visit and where buses would pick up a family. That shit was crazy. Shit my family lived 3 and a half hours ago. It was a trip

rehabilitation works BUT you cant fix someone who has killed someone. You can make them realize what they did was wrong but the legal system wont allow them to be free until they serve their sentence. It's awesome that parents are allowed to see their kids and hopefully they do change and incorporate back into the community and try and help others who make bad decisions.
I may show this to my future kids someday. I like that it shows the negative consequences in terms of those you love, as well as the reason why some people go back on purpose.
A kid in my school was sent to juvenile prison for cyber crimes, he literally scammed people, stole credit card numbers, and sold them to retailers while also getting caught trying to access the school system to steal test papers, this is legit strange because he was only about 14, he was served about 8-10 months.
All cells r different, some dont have the same rules n some u just sit in your room n do anything all day i got out yesterday at 12:00 i was in for a day
I spent my whole career working with @-risk youth, probation, parolees, and now I’m a Principal @ a continuation school. I grew up with a father who spent a lot of time in prison during the 60s, one of the founding fathers of a a California State Prison gang, before he went to Vietnam- then he raised me and my siblings. I think it’s BS that your environment is who you are. I have Bachelor’s degree, two Masters Degree, authored a book, whiling growing up in Stockton; we are who we want to be. Granted some kids have superior coping skills but we are all given choices.

As a kid that’s never been to a juvenile detention center this seems less chaotic and more peaceful that i had imagined.
i went to juvie once when i was 17. some Crip dude told me "you'll be back. they always come back." i laughed to myself and said fuxk that not me. Thankfully i kept my own word to myself. Free man since then im 25 now phew!! taste that freedom haha

I had to serve a year an honestly it was all mentally painful. I could've been celebrating my brothers birthday I could've gone to my first day of high school I could've tried out for soccer but I guess it was all worth it in the end cause now I'm better an my life won't EVER be the same an I'm way to cautious about things now.

I served 7 1/2 years in mount meigs in Montgomery Alabama in 23 hour lockdown. I was 11 years old when I went in and came out a week shy of my 18th birthday. 23 hour lockdown ruined me , it trained me to live inside my mind and block the world out. It has major effects and takes a major toll on your mind. It wasnt until I had kids that I realized the world was much greater then the mindset I put myself in inside of that cell.

I have spoken to someone about my dark moments with my parents and I’m proud of it, my dad recently got out of a mental hospital a week ago due to personal issues, I’m glad he seeked help. But when your charged with 2nd degree murder, you need to understand and ask yourself, “what will this do, how can it affect me, and why did I do it”. Some people don’t think about it and don’t understand. And yet this 17 (most likely 18 or 19) is seeking help in a secure way.
Hopefully he will be able to rehabilitate and turn things around if he gets out one day I hope this young man gets into selling his art he’s got talent

As a sociology major researching the relationship between education and incarceration, I was appalled at the way both systems are dealing with children. Zero Tolerance Policy should be banned. It only increases further the number of people imprisoned. It doesn't help the children from low income families; due to the fact they will most likely to have "deviant" behavior. Therefore they are also the most targeted to be suspended and/or expelled from schools as well as sent to correctional facilities. That is absolute bullshit. Most delinquents aren't murderers. For the large part, they are simply kids who have behavior problems. They talk back, resist orders, or have contraband( usually drugs and alcohol). Zero Tolerance Policy DOES NOT HELP THEM. It cuts them off from the society, and essentially abandoning them. The education system is so corrupt. This is what they call School To Prison Pipeline; a result that funnels children into incarceration. IS THIS HOW EDUCATION SHOULD BE? NO.
There should be programs in schools. Mentor-ship for these troubled teens. Deep down, this kids needed love and attention; something that is difficult to obtain from low-income families due to parents working 12-16 hours a day to feed their kids. Parents don't have time to spend with their kids, like what that kid said in the video. These kids need mentors to look after them and guide them to the right path. THAT is education. Not throw them away, abandoned in correctional institutions where no one gives two fucks about them. This is how many criminals are born from; youth incarceration. These kids have strikes across their names, therefore it becomes very difficult for them to get into higher education. Pretty tough to get into college if they have a criminal record already. By that point, society has abandoned them. They are pretty much labelled as criminals across the board, even if deep down they are good people. Hence they become what society wants them to become; criminals. Also by that point, these kids have been accustomed to their treatment; they lose trust in the government, they lose trust in people with higher power, and of course have no love for the police. They are hateful towards people of power; creating a sort of resistance against them, crime. If people aren't going to help them get their needs, they will get their needs by taking from others. What's 1-5 years of prison to them when they have been imprisoned in their youth? They know the system.
So much of today's societal problems stem from the relationship between education and incarceration. Government spending has increased in correctional facilities meanwhile education facilities and programs are being shut down. College is massively expensive and over priced. K-12 schools are being shut down to make way for new correctional facilities to alleviate growing inmates. Not to mention, PRISONERS EAT BETTER THAN SCHOOL CHILDREN. When prisoners eat better than school children, it means they have way more funding than education.
US has their priorities wrong. To make proper citizens, you need to invest more money on their education and create programs to help create upstanding citizens. Prevention is the best way to combat criminal activity. It's THE ONLY way. We can't eliminate crime completely; that's idealism. Realistically, we can reduce inmates from 2 million incarcerated to back to 500,000 inmates. Probably even reduce it even more. A mere 8% of government spending in US education is a disgrace of what's considered the most powerful country in the world.
I hope people become more and more aware of this fact. We are already contain the world's most incarcerated population, this is America's biggest irony. After all, we're supposed to be the land of the free.

Did time here. Place honestly still haunts me today. i did my time on the hill, got in trouble and did some 48 hour bids in the max. I can still remember the way it smells, i recognize the halls and rooms. When I left Virginia, I felt relief, knowing I was far away from there. It changed me, for the better by the worst means.

I used to play for the bon air Olympic team. That includes soccer, swimming, track, high jump. I got medals in all. Man I was a kid but still fucking it up. I miss this bon air sometimes i mean it sucked being locked but My life wasn't as bad as now.

Just got out a week ago spent 3 years in djj in Atlanta Georgia. I’m 17 now. It sucked so much because my family lived 7 hours south of where I was housed at. Visitations were only on Saturday so I never got to spend thanksgiving or Christmas with my family. So I wanna say to any of y’all out there doing the stupid shit - stop now why you can because it may seem like all fun and games but once your in there for 2 months it feels like a year I was in my cell daily in and out for 21 hours a day 7 days a week alone and every night for three years I cried my self to sleep. So please if sum bothering you talk to someone you don’t have to act out to prove your point be tbh I would hate it so damn much if I knew someone close to me. Had to go through that shit

Keeping someone locked in by themselves is truly horrible. These are kids!!! They aren’t fully grown. Most of you saying this kid needs to stay or deserves being put in a 4 wall cell are so uneducated. Think about where you were when you were 18 or 19? The system makes MONEYYYYY. They can careless about your well being or even rehabilitation. I know I was locked in the county jail spending most of my time by myself if I didn’t have a roommate. I cried everyday and I thought about suicide. I came out and it did nothing but make me angry and fustrated. If someone knows anything about this kid please let me know I wanna get in touch.
I have mental problems with anxiety and depression. The system did nothing but hurt me and make me worse. I just turned 20 and having issues like this in my day to day life is so unhealthy especially at my age. 18 or 19 year olds if you don’t rehabilitate them and just stick them in a box you will more than likely reoffend. If you have never been incarcerated and grew up with the “struggles” of growing up do not say one word. You have no idea.
And to add he PLEADED guilty it doesn’t necessarily mean he killed a person I read the article and he was part of a robbery that went wrong. They gave him a deal which they also do in high cases like this to scare the kids from taking it to trial (which btw the court systems rather not take the cases to trial in fear of the defendant winning.) society is so messed up to think anyone under the age of 21 is okay to be locked up confined like this boy here.

I work in a youth Behavior facility for ages 6-18. The kids have been traumatized by rape, abuse, a parents death, etc. Most kids can't see their parents because the facility takes in kids from all over the country. They can live-chat on the computer with their therapist & family, though. These kids are very manipulative, most have been in the system their whole life. Many have committed a series of crimes--rape, murder or attempted murder--others are too violent to be in the public domain. One thing so many of these kids lack is empathy. Their families never taught it, or there's something wrong with their brain that they just don't get it. If a child becomes 17 or 18, and they have been accused of a crime, they may go straight to detention or prison. Most kids arrive in shackles. Some go home to their families, some don't want to go home to their families so they may go to a 1/2 way house. If they don't go through the program successfully, the will likely never be accepted in the community.

The units where kids that got into fights were able to see us in those tiny scratched up windows. I almost got Written up for fist bumping a homie in the cell with a window. Lmfao man them times were tuff. Especially since I missed two Christmas. They didn't have where a family could come visit and where buses would pick up a family. That shit was crazy. Shit my family lived 3 and a half hours ago. It was a trip

rehabilitation works BUT you cant fix someone who has killed someone. You can make them realize what they did was wrong but the legal system wont allow them to be free until they serve their sentence. It's awesome that parents are allowed to see their kids and hopefully they do change and incorporate back into the community and try and help others who make bad decisions.

A kid in my school was sent to juvenile prison for cyber crimes, he literally scammed people, stole credit card numbers, and sold them to retailers while also getting caught trying to access the school system to steal test papers, this is legit strange because he was only about 14, he was served about 8-10 months.

I spent my whole career working with @-risk youth, probation, parolees, and now I’m a Principal @ a continuation school. I grew up with a father who spent a lot of time in prison during the 60s, one of the founding fathers of a a California State Prison gang, before he went to Vietnam- then he raised me and my siblings. I think it’s BS that your environment is who you are. I have Bachelor’s degree, two Masters Degree, authored a book, whiling growing up in Stockton; we are who we want to be. Granted some kids have superior coping skills but we are all given choices.
