I think a pause hotkey would actually negatively affect the experience the game tries to provide. Two things are iconic for the Souls series: bonfires and the words 'YOU DIED'. The amount of times you'll see those words will teach you that everywhere and everything can take away your progress at any given time. Unlike most games, FS's games will have you nervous on the edge of your seat even in areas that seem safe. The only actual safe places in the games are the bonfires (mark of grace in ER).
From the moment you leave a bonfire, you're in danger. You can instantly die if you're even the slightest bit distracted. Only when you find a new bonfire, you'll be given back your feeling of safety. Any time you're not resting at a bonfire, you're taking a risk. This feeling, combined with the notorious difficulty, forms the (imo) perfectly crafted atmosphere that's present in FS's flagship games.
I think including a pause hotkey basically nullify this feeling by giving you a place of safety anywhere you are. And yeah, there's the workaround, but by making it complex you're at least still somewhat taking a risk, especially during boss fights. Once you step through those fog gates, you're locked until you either die or win.
Side note, if you want to master FromSoft games, you'll have the learn and memorize patterns made by opponents. So being able to pause the game as fast as possible is kind of like overcoming another boss fight since you've familiarized yourself with the pattern. Pretty funny if you see it from that perspective.

Pausing to collect myself during a boss battle takes away from fighting nerves when the bosses HP bar gets low. And adding the pause for everyone as a built in button takes away from the shared struggle of fighting nerves back and remaining calm when the fight gets intense.
This is what everybody is missing. They ran with the disability bullshit but completely ignore the fact that there is a game design choice by not having a pause button.
"Oh but it's single player!" So? The game is meant to keep the player stressed in fights and on their toes. It's designed to be that way. This is why I hope devs stop catering to western/modern audiences because they will gut a purposeful design choice, (a choice mind you that has helped lead to one of the best selling franchises on the market and created an entire genre of games) just because Alanah pierce and a bunch of other youtubers and fools think one dimensional and ignore the fact that it's part of what makes the game the way it is.

Elden Ring releases, people go straight to Margit: "This game is too difficult."
Elden Ring DLC releases, people go straight to Dancing Lion: "This DLC is too difficult."
I think people have permanent mental disability. It is an open world game for a reason. The new items tab should help people to see what they picked up. But it only proves people don't pay attention to items they collect. When I picked up the first Scadutree Fragment it was clear as day this makes the DLC easier. But I died more times to frame drops than to anything else.
That's what I've been saying to people. When I started the DLC on my 150 character I immediately began exploring for scadu fragments and tried to maximize how many I could get before each boss fight.
I didn't struggle with a single boss through the entire experience until I reached Radahn.

There exists a medical term for what they are describing as 'temporary disability' which is 'impairment'. We are taught caution when using the term 'Disability'.
People may get temporary injuries. People may catch the flu. In either case, they are impaired but not disabled.
And the term "Situational Disability" is actually used less than "Situational Impairment" in the very document she referenced, so it's really weird she chose to use the more charged term.
Isn't it fantastic when people decide they can change the meaning of words and then get mad when people interpret the word to mean what it actually means instead of what they just on the spot decided it means? Apparently Mutahar is on board with that sort of thing.

The heavy accent one had me sent lmaooo
If you look at accesibility features for color blindness it becomes even more obvious that accesibility doesn't always mean the game becomes easier. The goal of a colorblind mode is to bridge the gap between the colorblind person and a normal player. That colodblind mode won't make the game easier for a person with normal vision. It's just there to make sure that the colorblind person has the same difficulty as people with normal vision. In action rpg:s you often have red warning signs projected on to the ground to tell the player where an attack is going to hit. The purpouse of the sign is to very clearly show players where not to stand. However if you are projecting a red warning signs on green grass, it can be incredibly hard for red/green colorblind people to see them if the brightness of the 2 colors is similar. So it would go against the design of the game if some people are not able to notice the thing the developer wants them to see as clearly as possible.
"if you look at this one specific scenario where accommodating for someone's shortcomings doesn't make the game easier, it should show you that accommodating for someone's shortcomings doesn't always mean making the game easier!"

I wonder what would happen to these people that are fixed to the idea that the game is 'hard' if they heard that there is a item that can one shot the death rite bird.. Just straight up, you throw the pot, it's dead.. It's not even like a unique rare drop pot.
Where as they should just say, the game is polished, the animations are fluid, the move sets of the bosses are satisfying to see. It's practically everything about the game that people consider the essence of it's greatness, the "Difficulty", is actually just how the game looks as you or the enemy AI performs the actions, wich is the point, that they care and make them look on point, smooth and cool. But No one can tell me the game is hard when you can buff yourself with 15 bonuses and one shot the final boss, no one can tell me the game is hard when you can make a build, and face tank the final boss until its dead, by "Build" it's not even a complex PHD thing like it's a POE build, no you just put points into one of the 8 attributes the game has, the attributes reach a high level, you take the heaviest weapon, the heaviest armor, the heaviest shield and the game is a bitch in your hands.
Is there even a more pathetic cast then the "difficulty" soys hanging onto the shallow idea that they amount to something for beating a boss in a Action RPG ? Oh wow, the sky is blue again.

I get why there is no pause button. Is for you not to pause the game in the middle of the fight to change your equipment. It would be better to have a hotkey that just pauses the game without letting you go through your inventory.
I think it's just a gimmick for their souls games to increase psychological torment and immersion. Clearly they care enough about that gimmick to add graces every 5ft and checkpoints as a compromise to pausing.
The pro pause people are being just as dismissive because they prioritize their own convenience over series that's been doing their own thing long before it was mainstream.
This is why gatekeeping exists, suddenly something becomes popular and they want it to conform to them at the risk to the what originally made it popular.
I don't find the argument bad but situational disabilities is the stupidest terminology created, call it for what it is: an annoyance/a hindrance/real life shit you gotta deal with.
Because in that context me needing to take a piss whilst dealing with the second phase of malenia is also a disability. 😂😂
Its really just a corporate term. I think in the context of discussing media it works. I'd never tell my friends "can we hang out this weekend? I have a situational disability on week days"
The language is intentional. One of the primary ways the modern game industry tries to push to make games easier for the "mass market" is to wrap it around feel good language about how it's for "accessibility" and to help those with "disabilities". Surely you have noticed over the years the difficulty discourse often getting tied back to those with disabilities. So the phrase "situational disability" existing and being pushed by game devs is no accident.
For the record, I agree that all games should have a pause. But the use of the word "disability" is no accident, nor was the general confusion and controversy around it.
It's a term used in game dev, or any form of digital product/platform dev. It's about a thing called accessibility, something designers & devs think deeply about. She's IN the industry. She's not making up a term to make others feel bad about her, she's literally using the correct word in the correct situation. You guys are such losers, jesus.
@@metapuns9004 Stop calling everything a "corporate term". You wouldn't call "operational security" corporate nor would you say "My car was totalled because I was not operationally secure". Are you seriously calling children an annoyance?
As someone who has two children, I gotta be honest. I don’t really have time to play many video games, but if I really want to, I will wake up early before everyone gets up and get in at least a couple of hours of playing it, children are only disability if you don’t plan enough
This is such an inane comment.
I absolutely agree. I was able to play games when my son was about 6 months up to about a year and a half. Then from about 4 and up. Thing is, because every kid is different sometimes you can't even play at night because you might have q kid with sleep regression.
Or, you know, they could just add a pause button to the game so you are not forced to wake up early to play video games. What is next? Helmets are for people who don't plan enough, you can just bike slowly and not fall?
It is an easily solveable problem. Clowning on people for asking for a solution instead of just working around the problem in an inconvenient way is idiotic.
Also, you are literally doing the exact thing Mutahar made fun of people for doing. You are just jumping at the word "disability" with a knee jerk reaction instead of actually engaging with the appropriate meaning of the term.
"Situational disability refers to a temporary impairment in a person’s ability to interact with technology due to their situation, context, or environment." So yes, children do qualify in this context. This isn't demeaning or insulting kids. It is just a term.
When my two were little, I got into the habit of playing with sound off and there's plenty of ways to pause without having a designated pause option. Go sit in the menu or save option, go park your character is a spot away from respawns. Logout or exit if you absolutely have to. I did a fair amount of playing when everyone was asleep for the night.
Tbf, I do the same thing. I wake up an hour early and play my games and tell myself to feel grateful lmao.
Nowadays half of my playtime in most games is literally just pause menu.
I like the fact that Elden Ring makes you work for everything, even getting to the pause menu lol
Just found this channel. Great commentary 🤘🏻
The difficulty level might not necessarily be the issue at hand here, but rather the technical glitches that interfere with the gameplay.
And the fact that the game runs at less than 50fps 99% of the time on console and pc.
What technical glitches?
Git good oooohhhhh gotem!
Yeah, as great as the game is, it is still carrying massive legacy glitches that go all the way back to Dark Souls. Magic hitboxes being the worst offenders...

5 inputs - Pause>A>Select>Up>A. Got it memorized the same way I did for quitting out in the Souls trilogy. And I think that's fine, but I think it's problematic that most people won't even know it exists until somebody tells them. I'm all for FromSoftware being cryptic, but not when it comes to basic controls.
Start-left-down-A-A
When playing a game fundamentally changes the nature of the game and its artistic intent, its completely understandable to limit the ability for certain people to play it as intended. Im missing an entire finger on my left hand. I have to rebind keys often. Thats possible outside of most games if needed, but id never expect a dev to compromise an artistic vision to placate me. I just wont play, thats ok. Not every game is for every person. Another game may be able to stick to its artistic vision while being easier or more customizable. Another Crabs Treasure comes to mind as a soulslike with less difficulty without compromising artistic intent etc.

Disability is just a poor word choice, instead of saying "situational disability" and "accessibility options" if she had just said "I would appreciate a pause because sometimes I have to stop my kid from electrocuting himself", I don't think any reasonable person would have an issue with it 😂
Key word being "reasonable".

She could always, you know, not play those games until she can take the time?
@@princememphis7726 And so is "Situational Impairment", which is mentioned more in what she referenced than "Situational Disability", and yet she chose to use the latter over the former.
I would like to say, the reason the game doesn’t have a conventional pause button is because you’re supposed to have access to swapping inventory during a fight, but not for free since you’re still vulnerable while trying to swap your gear. It’s entirely intentional.
In regards to making a hot key for the pause, how would they do that on controller? It’s one thing to say “make a hot key for it” because a keyboard would have some half the keys that you already aren’t using for the gameplay, so there’s plenty of options. On controller, every button and trigger is already being used for the gameplay, to the only way that could work is if that put the pause into another menu in the inventory, which is exactly what they did. There’s a pause function, but because of the limited buttons on the controller, it’s part of a menu in the inventory, so you have to press more than 1 button to use it.
I think the real problem is she said something semi-reasonable (pause button for single player, please), but put it in the most stupid possible way humanly possible (my babu is crippling).
That's a problem with niche gaming industry terminology though and not with her.

If you think that she thinks of kids as a disability in the same way that a paraplegic is disabled, you need to go back to school. "Situational disability" is very obviously gaming industry jargon for the kinds of things developers think about in regards to how accessible their games are. She didn't invent the term, she's using what the industry uses. I work IT, and anywhere else if I said twain, people would think of splitting a thing in two or Mark Twain. They wouldn't think of it as a technical term for a specific kind of software, IE Technology Without An Interesting Name, for which TWAIN is the acronym. This is just basic contextual understanding of how the world works, not rocket science. Y'all just wanna be mad.
"Situational disability" is just corpo PR speak for "inability". I'm not surprised it came from Microsoft sensitivity training manual.

These aren't souls fans or "vets", they're posers.
Pause literally doesn't change the difficulty, it's just a delay to your eventual death/success. It doesn't make the ass beating any easier, it just gives you breathing room.
One could argue that a pause menu will allow a player to check their emotions and thoughts. Maybe even have a plan of attack. Thus making the game easier.
I personally don't think it would make that much of a difference, but this is the argument I've heard before.
I don't think anyone should deny it makes the game easier... But by an amount so small it's insignificant.
I would say that “breathing room” does make it easier. If a enemy blindsides you and you can’t pause the moment of panic/surprise is very powerful and can be difficult to navigate.
You just contradicted yourself. If a game gives you more breathing room, it is indeed easier. It's obvious the game director wants to instill a sense of urgency in the player by not having a pause button, making you think twice about choices and keeping the player on edge. It's an artistic decision to implement certain emotions through their art.
Pausing pausing gives you time to check a wiki/tutorial, time to think and come up with a plan, time to emotionally reset after a panic inducing moment. The game has a lot of natural downtime, you can literally just chill between enemies indefinitely for the most part. They omitted the pause button so you cant artificially interrupt combat situations, once you aggro it's an uninterrupted fight until you either win or die. personally I think adding a pause would not only make it significantly easier but drastically change the atmosphere of the game.
Elden Ring is such a poor example of this too, because as you mentioned quitting out to the main menu takes 5 seconds and you lose NOTHING. There are checkpoints everywhere, legacy dungeons are very short to run through or have shortcuts etc. You lose absolutely nothing from restarting.
START UP X LEFTB X LEFT X
Not only that but the people complaining about it being "too hard" are just people who are purposefully making the game harder for themselves. If you use everything the game gives you to use at your disposal, including magic and summons and exploring for scadu points, you can literally play on easy mode if you want. I hate that Elden Ring was so popular it brought the worst of gamers into their fanbase.
Sure. And how can a FREAKING PAUSE BUTTON be detrimental to the game?
5 seconds vs .00003 seconds from pressing a fucking button. Hmmm 🤔
Literally already the most accessible soulsborne ever made and fanatics still think a simple pause option is gonna break the game…😅 Summons and statue of Marika have a bigger impact on the difficulty of the game than a pause button.
Oh that’s right I forgot those same fanatics also gaslight people for summoning. I guess they are just a lost cause at this point. 😢
