Lindsey Buckingham wrote the music in 1971 when he was very ill for a year - then the lyrics in early 1974 after his father died. You can feel the pain and darkness. It was meant for the 2nd Buckingham Nicks album but debuted (along with several other BN songs) on his first FM album the self titled Fleetwood Mac in 1975. Sadly it was recorded in too high a key which for some reason was not re-recorded. Also, far shorter at 4+ minutes - while a purely instrumental version on the Deluxe album release is 7+ minutes. Live it's an absolute monster - some later versions clock in around 10 minutes. It's a concert staple for Buckingham - solo or when he was in FM. This is from a reunion special in 1997 called The Dance - which also marked the 20th anniversary of Rumours.

I know this won't be popular but I struggle to listen to Stevie Nicks as I find her voice sets my teeth on edge. I love the way you let the whole song go and then speak at the end. The bass/drum section in Fleetwood Mac is legendary and here they prove it. And what can one say about Lindsey, we always say this or that guitar player is underrated, but he really is. That last solo is in my top 3 EVER definitely. This song is a rollercoaster of emotions, floydesque maybe like Crazy Diamond (a "space blues" somebody called it). Thanks for choosing it!

Love this song, but I wish you'd watched the 1982 version from their Mirage tour, it's so much better than this one. Well, maybe that's subjective, lol. Maybe check it out and compare. I just think he sounds better in the earlier performance, more emotional, not straining as much. When I first heard this song back in the 70s it convinced me Buckingham is one of the all time greats on guitar.
