- Vesta Williams "Don't Blow a Good Thing" (Single Version) (1986)
Produced by Bryan Loren & Billy Valentine
From the A&M album "Vesta"
I had never heard this song or seen the clip until TV One aired Vesta's posthumous Unsung special, but the songwriting and production is more sophisticated than I would have expected for the time.
The only version of the video I found on UA-cam was out of sync with the audio. Womp, womp. But I used the footage from njjwn1's post of the video ( • Video ) to cut it back together. Until a better version surfaces, here's "Don't Blow a Good Thing." It's 4 minutes of veluptuous, cheesy, 80's fun. What's not to like?
I remember recording this song back in the summer of 87, in Detroit Michigan Radio station WJLB strong song.
I was 18 in '86 and the older guy I lived with (he was 38) bought her first album because he REALLY liked the track from it that was playing on the radio, "Once Bitten, Twice Shy", and at the time I didn't care for that song at all and kinda just wrote Vesta off; BUT THEN I heard THIS track and I finally "got it!" This woman was powerful, right up there with Chaka in my opinion, and sooooo Jackee-bawdy (at that time). You could tell Vesta had a great sense of humor and was very happy with her curvaceous figure, as was I!! LOL I loved my some Vesta with this track, and the 12" is even better! Do yourself a favor and get her first cd if you can, great album. Also check out here on youtube the 12-inch version of this song, guarantee you'll get up and dance! Keep the party goin for Vesta!! We love you lady!
R.I.P. Vesta!
I remember this song from 1986!
It's been a long year!
well, still gotta kill this gut and fix that bike!
Truck by HF !
Vesta was a great R&B artist and she appeared in my hometown of Indianapolis, IN at the Madame Walker Theatre performing her final R&B concert appearance on stage along with After 7 from 2008 before she passed away. Vesta delivered her best voice for me and her audience and putting on a great show live on stage for the final time in my hometown live and in person. Now she's gone on and up in heaven with the lord. Her music, voice and legacy will live on forever. R.I.P., Vesta Williams. Gone, But Not Forgotten.
Continue to rest in Paradise, my fabulous & extremely talented Sag big sis!! You are very sorely missed by the world!! Still honoring you by listening & jamming to your music today on 2020!! RIHP Vesta!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So i love childhood memories of 1980s R&B music, When i was 5 years old?
100%!
r.i.p vesta she has 1 of the best voices of the 80's good times.
Love her version of SWV's "Rain"
@John Verge She was one of Chaka's backup singers.
Man I played this song on a cassette tape over and over, could not get enough of Miss Vesta Williams. She was and always will be a gem in R&B hands down!!
I played it over and over again on cassette tape too but it was the 12 inch version I played. I love Vesta, may she rest in peace. 🙏🙏❤
Happy Heavenly Birthday Vesta 12-1-14
If this song don't make you feel good I don't know what will. Love this song!!!
86 I was a pretty young thang then.....22! This was when we dressed to go out!
Yes !! Love this song..and it does a lot like Chaka Khan..if memory serves me right Vesta sang background for Chaka for many years Sleep on in the tranquility of Peace Vesta Williams
Toni Jones.-James your memory serves you VERY well! Yes she did a great Chaka impersonation TOO!! I like"once bitten" BUT when I saw her sassy tude in this and I was a fan! Had a GREAT sence of humor!! RIP.... In nearly ripped my heart out when I found out she'd passed..but we have your videos and music...
Under rated this lady could blow.RIP Vesta
Agreed!
SHE ROCKD THIS JOINT,VIDEO SOUL & VIDEO VIBRATIONS,LUV ME SOME VESTA... ALWAYS BEATIFUL AND HAT GAME WAS CRAZY.R.I.P I MISS U
Damn, I loved this woman! She was hands down one of the most gifted and underated singers of any time. She could sing as well as Chaka, Patti, Anita, and anybodyelse you want to throw in there. Rather full figured or smaller, she was as beautiful as they come. It's a shame that she didn't realize all that she truly was, and that some 'idiots' didn't treat her like the queen she was. R.I.P forever Vesta.
This song is all that. What a nice one. Go Vesta.
First time hearing this after watching TVOne posting. I pray that Vesta knew how much so many people loved her absolutely awesome talent!!!
this song was the jam!!
You know what 2 say!!!! Remeberjamming to this!
All these years I thought this was Chaka's song. OMG! Werk Vesta. RIP. Love this song!
+Lydgia P. At one time, she one of Chaka's backup singers.
She sang back up for Chaka and adsorbed all of of her vocal teniques. I remember when Vesta was on Video Soul and Donnie Simpson asked her what did Chaka think when she heard this and she said Chaka said " Girl , you ain't me !". Lol
Lydgia don't feel bad,I though the exact same thing
I didn't want to admit that fact!
103.9 KACE, and I assumed that it was C K!
So did I...
Where are are the strong women like this at! Miss that voice, young girls listen and learn.
What a great bass line! RIP Ms. Vesta...the heiress apparent to Ms. Chaka...i used to imagine the guy in the video was me...now you're singing with the angels...
i am in tears(of joy)... i used listen to this for hours!!!I neeeeeeed your looove!! need you, beside meeeee!!!I waaaaaant your looove!! give it, to me!!
Most men dont realize until it's too late like Ms Vesta said. Love this song she was an underrated singer RIP !
This cut is still a party groover!

this jam takes me back summer of 1988, up in Covington, ky on Byrd street big red two story house, my cousins and I used argue that she was singing, don't blow a good thing and they swear she was ' don't u know a good thing ,baby! but I was right!
Today is the 1st time I’m hearing this. I like this & makes me feel like grooving.
Vesta sure was fine. The only woman in my opinion, who's voice rivaled Chaka Kahn's. Believe she would have been an R&B Hall of Famer.
I be blasting this every morning. It gets my day started
Reminds me of rollin on Western Ave, and being stopped by the LAPD and not getting a traffic ticket because the cops couldn't find my dope sake!
God, I miss those days!
When I hear this song my head gets flooded with memories going to so many places with my sister Connie who I love dearly. Thanks sister for all the fun times and memories you shared with me. Love You..
