the best diy aquarium lids you'll ever make
so recently I found black mould on the skirting boards, and I knew my fishtanks were to blame. having open top aquariums with pathos and mangrove tress sticking out, had caused the humidity to escalate, causing the start of mildew in a new previously damp free new build!
I had no choice but to remove the plants as make some lids, otherwise it was GAMEOVER for the fish room office.
the twin wall polycarbon sheet cost £71 and the tape and draught excluder probably another £10 money well spent if it helps me reduce the moisture in the air it was enough to make lids for 3 x 300lt and 4 x 50lt with a bit spare to cover the bow front aqua 500
easy to make for the beginner aquarist!
Sorry about the sound,
mic wasn’t connected properly
School boy error
Thought it sounded 👍
Great idea!! Bow front one looked awesome, neat and tidy! 👍
Thanks Maureen 👍👍
Excellent advice, Mal. Your channel is brilliant for great advice like this 👏
I wouldn’t go that far Iain 😂
They look lush Mal. I make mine using the same polycarbonate, but i spend the extra 5 bucks and get the proper end capping and silicone it over the open ends. I make 4 lids per tank, so when feeding etc one only has to remove the front lid. I love how you did the bow front, looks awesome!
I seen it and was so tempted to
But it was £8 a length and I’d need 4 at least
Maybe a upgrade in the future though
Clever lad Mal 👏🏻 xxx
Thanks sis 😘
Absolutely fecking awesome job Mal bruva you will find though that the polycarbonate will help keep the moisture and heat in it will stop some of your lighting penetrating the water 🧁👍👍👍
Cheers Vince I might need to drop the lights down a bit
In the future
Great video Mal 👍👍👍
Thanks 👍 Curtis
Appreciate the comment 👍
Sound as a pound, Mal. Great upload, brother 👍
Cheers buddy
No problem, Mal 👍 thanks for sharing this very useful information 👍
They’re perfect fit mal👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks heather 😘
I wish you had spent this much time putting my wardrobe up 😂😂😂
I wish the room was emptied to put it up in lol 😂
@@aquariumdelirium cracking job mal
Nice job Mal.
I can never find that stuff... The sheeting not the mold.
Believe it or not I don't get black mold in my fishroom and a lot of my tanks are open.
Now I use to get some when it was a bedroom if the bed was right against the wall.
I make sure my tanks are not against the walls so there is proper air flow.
I currently em not running a fan but do a bit in the summer when it is humid.
Excellent job on the lids and smart thinking on the water drip.. great idea..
I think it’s also down to the time of year it’s been a really damp four months
So washing wash getting dried indoors also
But at least it’s stopped the evaporation
I was getting about 25lt a week per big tank
Which was playing havoc with the hardness
Those are very nice Mal! Awesome work. A few years back I was looking into DIYing some covers but wond up just buying replacement glass ones, wish I seen this video then. I really like your thinking with these.
Cheers Patty they are working really well but for some reason this season is a damp one compared to the normal dry winter we have
Well executed mate. Great solution.
Cheers Daniel
Nothing to beat so give me a weeks for some views lol
Wow! Mal you are such a professional when it comes to diy mate, those lids look absolutely amazing mate, great job, i have some tanks coming soon and they will need lids, besy you start making your way down to mine😉. I love the passion you have for everything you do in regards to the fishkeeping hobby! Full view mate 😊

I like taking other skills and using them in the hobby
Big things coming soon! It might work or may flop
Thanks for watching bud
Very nice lids .
Thanks buddy 👍👍
What a great idea. I'll have to look for that stuff next time I'm at B&Q. Great video. Doubt my lids will turn out as good but can only try 😊
Thanks Alison
Awesome job with some nice lids!
Cheers buddy
Fab job, Mal 🤗💙
Thank you debz 🩵
Nice DIY vid Mel😀
Thanks Tony
Hi Mel, just subbed you, nice to chat on the Jeff's live, best wishes, Tony, Farmoor Koi😀
Cheers bud
How do you get them back off to do feeding or maintenance? Looks like it would be very hard.
Yeah it’s not to bad but I’ll be gluing a handle on later to help
@@aquariumdeliriumJust got a small round cabinet knob for mine, £1:99 eBay.Also cut right along the Bow front 9” from the middle to make a feeding lid, instead of having one whole sheet to lift every time I fed the fish..bought plastic hinges & double sided tape from eBay, to attach both pieces of sheet.
@@lolavanenburg1647 great idea 👍👍
Some great tips Mal
Thanks Paul
Dear Malcolm Daglish:
I saw Jason, of “Jadren Aquatics,” use twin wall polycarbon sheets, on his tanks, years ago. Thank you, for reminding me, of this product. It’s just what my, friend Charles needs, for his 55-gallon tank. The glass sheets he is using, as a glass canopy, on that tank are frosted; ill-fitted; and, lack a hinge. This product should allow more light to pass through and be less of a hassle, to remove.
All my best,
Sincerely,
E. J. Brinegar
Thank you
I first made some of these lids two years ago, for the tanks upstairs. They’ve last well, but I went through a stage of having pothos draped around the open top, hence the black mould slowly getting a hold
They’ve been reinstated now as well
Thanks for commenting, I appreciate it.
How difficult is the product to cut? Does it tend to break, creating a jagged edge? Please advise.
No it’s easy a sharp craft knife would do but I couldn’t find my generically called Stanley
The saw dust (plastic chipping do tend to get statically attached to the void space, but it’s not majorly a problem. Keeping the louvres running on the shortest width is always good practice as it would sag on longer lengths
But keeping it running front to back stops the problem.
Hope this helps
Oh yes, please. Thank you, for explaining the use, of this, fine product.
Can I ask you Mal, how you found cutting round the bow shaped front of the polycarbonate..I’ve got a 450 Juwel Vision tank, and found it quite hard cutting a bow shape for the front of the tank.
You can use a Stanley knife (craft knife ) or a electric jigsaw, it’s easier than it looks and the tape hides the edges if you make a mistake,
Hopefully this helps lolavanenburg 👍👍
Aah thanks Mal, did you use Gaffer tape for the edges ?
@@lolavanenburg1647 yeah 👍
@@aquariumdeliriumcheers Mal👍🏼
Nice one might steal the idea but £70 odd quid a bit pricey tho
It is Brian but I got 3 x 4’ tanks
4 x 2’tanks and that oddball bow front one all done for £80
So £10 a lid
@@aquariumdelirium ah yeah works out OK then my bad miscounted your tanks lol
Bom trabalho, mas para dar comida aos peixes tem de levantar a placa toda , que não é muito bom...😐 fazer uns cortes com dobradiças e assim a meu ver ficava perfeito 😉
That would be a great upgrade and possible on a future video
Thank you Carlos 👍👍
