I have vicious back problems. I can no longer bend to put my socks on I can hardly move my leg. My mother had this device sitting in her closet. She offered it to me but had no idea how to properly use it. Your demonstration was great to see. Tanks for the time and effort you put in making the video. I can now put socks on without having tears in my eyes from uncontrollable pain.

I think it's really great that you go into these reviews so open to their uses, and that you acknowledge that a lot of the "sillier" as-seen-on-tv products are actually meant for people with physical disabilities. A ton of products that have people make fun of the concept are just disability aids, marketed badly to non-disabled people to try and increase the demographic and therefore profits
I own a 'Sock Slider' and use it daily. The secret to getting ideal results is to position the sock on the 'Sock Slider' so that the toe is very close to the top of the slider before you insert your foot. If the toe of the sock is near the bottom of the 'Sock Slider', it will not go on your foot very well. It will take some trial-and-error to get use to using it correctly, but this shouldn't take long and once mastered, the 'Sock Slider' does work as intended. I didn't find the angle of the device awkward or uncomfortable. Overall, I like it and would buy it again.

Are you elderly or do you just have back problems? My grandmother has artheritis and I think this could help her, but it seems tough to put the sock on the device

This is a wonderful demonstration of a torturous way to put on socks! This product is suppose to be designed for people with physical restrictions (back, knees, etc.), yet you appear to be very fit and still struggled with it. I come from a family with bad knees and I can tell by the way you were moving your knees and legs to use this product, that it absolutely is not designed for anyone in my family! Thank you for such a thorough review!
Yeah I'm an OT and we have used sock aids for decades and I could not recommend this to my patients with hip replacements or even arthritis. Too much work. They would be in pain and too tired to do anything else for the rest of the day.
D Michelle If you don't mind me asking, what would you recommend? I've seen the fabric (like Terry toweling material) sock aids but I can't fathom how they would work better than this. I feel like I need something rigid to hold the sock open, but am a bit lost as to what I should be looking to buy
nifferwilko I have to first recommend if you have any medical conditions that limit your mobility or restrictions after surgery you Must get an evaluation from an Occupational Therapist to determine what type of device would best work for you. This sock device in the video would destroy anyone with a hip replacement because it requires way too much hip flexion and struggling to be safe. If you just want an easier way to put on socks, the standard tool we OTs use is a rigid sock aid. Go to amazon.com and type in "sock aid" one of the first ones in the results is from RMS Royal Medical. That's the standard type we use with the two long ropes and the rigid plastic. The foam piece adheres to the bottom and it is necessary to keep the sock from flying off too soon. The difference is the plastic aid sits flat.on the floor in a U shape with the open side up which allows you to stick your foot in without having to flex your hip.

Thank you for starting your review off with an explanation that this is made for people who have physical issues to make it difficult to bend over and put on their socks. The first time I ever heard of a product to help people put on socks, it was #1 on a list of "stupid, useless products for lazy people" (or words to that effect). Basically, an able-bodied person, with no disabled friends or relatives, reviewed a bunch of products that are meant to add accessibility to disabled people's lives, and said how dumb they all were, and how only stupid, lazy people would use these things. As a newly-disabled person, I was enraged! And now, I still find myself commenting on posts, reminding able-bodied people that disabled people exist, and need to be recognized, and have things to help us out with common things, like dressing ourselves.
Also, I have a sock tool that was a gift to me, so I have no idea what it's called, or where to get it, and I can't find the link for you, but it's MUCH simpler. It's basically a single piece of plastic, with a couple of pull-straps. You bend the plastic, so it fits around your foot. You put the sock around the plastic, lower it to your foot, stick your foot into the plastic and push that sock right off the plastic piece, or pull the straps to pull the plastic piece out, or a sort of combination, whatever works for you. I do find that I have to tug on the legs of the socks to get them to come up (fortunately, I still can), but when that becomes a problem, I figure I can easily thread a ribbon through each side of the top of the sock, and pin the ribbon to the sock-tool straps, and when I have my foot firmly in the sock, I can pull on the ribbons to get the socks all the way up, then unpin the ribbon and slip the ribbon out of the sock tops. It should work just fine.
Sometimes, simpler is better. That big contraption looked way too complex for me. Although, for compression socks, I still ask my sister for help. Compression socks are a pain in the hip!

Thank you so much for taking the time to make your SockSlider video. I found it to be extremely helpful. I bought it for someone and was surprised to see you ran across the exact same problems trying to get it to work (the whole family got involved using different techniques).
We found the sock definitely needs to be rolled right to the end so the toe area is tight over the opening. And never found a way to get the long socks on the leg perfectly without bending and pulling them up. I would still give it a thumbs up as it is better than not wearing socks.

You took this from a viewpoint of the disabled. Bad back, bad hips, and you were fully willing to keep that viewpoint as you worked with it. You even got the compression sock on it, a miracle!!
Most vids for this tool end with "this is a joke, no one can use this (as they mangle their way not-trying). then one last dig for all temporary or permanently disabled people, "...if you can't put your damned socks on how do you put your under-drawers on?." Those are people you (almost) wish a back injury on. But I don't wish it, cause I'm not evil.
You are perfect. understanding, empathy, honest evaluation -- and you have helped me so much! Now I get it! That darned angle was my downfall, but actually using the tool at first, then putting one foot on the bottom of the slider to hold it down, then sliding other foot in, I finally got it!"

doesn't it stretch your sock putting on the contraption? Since I have a physical disability, I thought it would be cool and beneficial. But I couldn't wiggle my foot into the sock..
I just started watching your videos and they are so fun and useful!
I've been using a generic (read asian knock-off) identical design version of Sock Slider to put on knee-high compression socks for venal problems in my lower legs. I had the exact same problem you did with compression socks ie: as you progress down the sock, the harder it becomes to stretch over the "applicator channel" which becomes narrowed by the sock's compression strength. I don't suffer back problems (so I can easily bend over) and with practise have found this device actually helps because compression socks are generally damned hard to pull on !
Thought about sock slider. Thank you for showing how problematic it can be. And what about sock removal?
Do you use the handle to remove them?

I’m 71 and I’ve had a sock slider for years, I think it’s great.
If you don’t like the angle your foot enters, try standing up when you use it. There are not too many of us old folks that get in a low seat, much less try to put our socks on while in it.
You review reminds me of my five year old grandson trying to put on his jacket when he just doesn’t want to. LOL
I put my compression socks on every day and I love the fact I can put them on and take them off myself, no help. Use the long wand to remove the compression socks also works great. When putting the socks on bunch the socks up over the slider so your toes go all the way in then just slide your foot down and they are on, you still have to pull them up your leg but that is easy. When I put the socks on I am standing, but I steady myself. Grab handles on wall would be good but I can do it now without much steadying at all. Took me a while to perfect this but once you do you won,t go back.

If you have arthritis; broken or injured foot/ankle; recovering from surgery where you can't bend over; etc. I personally don't think it would help. I've had 2 broken ankles, a hip injury, and some minor surgeries, but the way you struggled trying to put the various socks on would never have worked for me. Thankfully, I have a husband that was a wonderful help through all of them. I can imagine how hard it would be if you lived alone trying to accomplish everyday tasks while injured or with arthritis/physical limitations. I hope someone will make a better product that's much easier to use and is easily used with every kind of sock. It is a much needed product.
I have had had both knees and,a hip replaced so have limited flexibility and, am not able to put on socks.I have used several devices with some success but have been using the sock slider for some time now and after some modification am very happy !
When I first used it I found that as soon as pressure was applied to slide my foot into the sock the device came apart!
I overcame this by "welding" all the joints with a hot soldering iron.
I am completely satisfied . It is a boon to anyone with limited mobility.
After reading reviews on other websites it is obvious that there are a lot of knockers who are ready to criticise without any practical experience !!

I agree, for those who have issues bending over (I had my pelvis broken after being thrown from my motorcycle) this is a wonderful tool. A few things I noticed which may be giving problems with the demo are:
1. Thoroughly read the directions. Not only are they short and to the point, they have large pictures and words for those who may have trouble seeing. There are also some troubleshooting tips (such as working with different sock lengths) that may help the user.
2. The couch is pretty low. I put my socks on in my bedroom while sitting on my bed which is higher and allows for a better angle.
3. Bed bath and beyond may allow you to try out in store before you buy. If not, you can always return there within the allowed time.

I think you did a fantastic job of showing, we must remember that without it there is no end result! so even if u work hard at it that's better then no sock!! my daughter bought this for me over a year ago and its been in the closet fer a long time. got my wife to dig it out today. I had a different 1 I was using but it was getting more difficult to use. My first challenge was to assemble it lol. of course i turned to utube and found yer vid, thank goodness. i have it all assembled and ready to try out tomorrow morning (as i already have my socks on) and not taking them off to try lol. I just bought it since, things went "south" for me physically recently. Honestly, I like it. Does the job and I was using a long tube sock.
Great demo but what about sore hands. At times I have problems getting gloves on.
After that first try I think you got the hang of it.

I just saw this on TV the other day, and was thinking of getting one for my mother, who wears compression socks. Thank you for saving me both from wasting my money and from several weeks of hearing how much trouble it is to use.
I know there are better made, more expensive devices that do the same thing and work easier. This is good for short socks, but not compression socks.
Thanks so much for this. I’m recovering from a fractured spine and am not allowed to bend. I bought one of these devices online but it didn’t have any instructions. Your video has helped a lot. I’m reasonably fit apart from my injury so the device is okay for what I need. I’m not sure how someone more incapacitated would manage.
Thanks for this review! I was about to order one of these, but am grateful I found this video. This product seems to be engineered for children's feet, and I know I would struggle using it because the space it creates for inserting the foot is just too narrow. I will keep on looking.

Unless someone can literally put my socks on I have to wear slippers or shoes no socks. Thank you ever so much for this effort to hopefully be successful myself instead of giving into being handicapped. I wear super tight compression long ones my doctor wrote me a prescription. So I can't wait try this device. Your awesome in figure out how to have less excess toe end in how to make it put on better. Hugs that's how much I appreciate your video.
my friend got me this sock slider for Christmas and it has changed my life!!! it used to take me 5 or 6 minutes each morning (with considerable pain) to put my socks on, now I just use the sock slider. It can be a little awkward, depending on the socks, but it has really been a godsend. Also, thanks for showing me how to use the attachment as a shoe horn to put shoes on!
I bought these for an extortion amount as a special via a puzzle I play. They eventually came, with no instructions. Googled as always and came across this video review. Fantastic, thank you so much, I was doing it all wrong and nearly binned it.

Ps. I think you should use your other foot to hold the thing still on the floor. Always assuming you have two feet. And no that was not a flippant remark, two of my friends are amputees. Xx

Not only does the stick help you to retrieve the sock slider, but it also works as a shoe horn. The two bits on the sides stabilize the back of the shoe while you slide your foot in using the s-shaped, cup part to slide your heel in!
get the long neck shoe horn. Tie your shoes first...then use the shoe horn to help your foot snuggle into them.

Thank you for this review. My mother wants one of these because she has to wear compression stockings due to swelling in her legs. She 87 years old, so she can't put them on by herself, so I do it for her. I wanted find something that she could use on her own and I appreciate your honest and thorough review because now i can see that this product might not work for her. :)
Just bought a sock slider. What a massive difference to my life. I have a chronic lung problem, and find it very difficult to bend down to put on socks. My chest compresses and leaves me very dizzy. The sock slider is a wonder. It allows me to sit upright to put on socks, causing very little chest compression. The hardest part for me is actually pushing into the sock. A little practice, and trial and error and I can now wear any type of socks comfortably. I have found it a great tool for removing them too. I tend not to use it as a shoe horn, but have an extended handle shoe horn by the shoe cabinet anyway. Probably not the best tool for people with leg and knee problems, as you need to wriggle around a bit sometimes, but for chest and back problems it is great....4 out of five.
You do an excellent job of reviewing various products keep up that great work. I really enjoy them. I don't know if you have a video on the Philips indoor smokeless Grill. They say it's smokeless on the infomercial and then different parts of the infomercial says it's much less but it looks like a good product it's certainly expensive enough. I would be much interested if you would review that please thank you so much for your great videos once again.

How do you take the socks off though?
I was going to get this for my 90 year old father, but after watching this is will not submit him to that frustration. Do you have alternative solution for socks and shoe insertion for seniors or disable individuals?
You are very fit and yet struggled with it (as Smart Blonde says). Your review is one of the best I've seen on UA-cam. I ordered from amazon.ca so maybe the Canadian shipments don't come with instructions. There was nothing in my SockSlider box except the product. With no instructions, it is very unclear how to put it together and use it. I am a disabled senior and can't bend far enough to pull my foot into the sock, and also to use the hook thing on the handle to pull the sock further up my leg. There is another sock aid out there that is a piece of white thin plastic with a thick cord on each side and you pull on each cord to get your foot into the sock, and the aide off your foot. I've found it works even better with a bit of talc powder on the white part where you put your foot before it goes into the sock. This blue sock slider came with no instructions and one thing that no one has explained is how to slide the foot piece onto the base, in other words you can take the foot thing with the large hole toward you and the hook on the base below the large hole and slide the foot part on that way, but I had to play with it a bit, and I see that Freakin Reviews has a space between the base and the foot part that you can see when he shows the entire base in a side shot. There is not supposed to be any gap between the foot piece and the base where the two slide together. I have a screen shot but don't see how to load my screen shot.
I also saw the air gap at the toe end between the two body halves of the tool. It seemed more noticeable after he accidentally 'split' the two halves during a demo and then refitted the halves together. Maybe he didn't properly slide the two halves together on their rails? I think that poor fit might allow unneeded flexibility during the first stages of pulling the sock up. Just a thought.
I'm struggling to get socks and shoes on as I'm obese. I bought this device thinking it would come with instructions, but regrettably there weren't any. Thanks to this video I worked it out! Ironically I want to lose weight by walking but if I used to have to struggle so bad just to get socks and shoes on, that I just stayed inside or wore open toe sandals (which provide no sole support, which exacerbates my feet problems, which is a further deterrent to exercise). Thanks very much for the assist.

I just received one of these from amazon and it falls apart every time I try to use it. The main body falls apart as well as the handle. So I am going to super glue everything and try it again.
Won't that ruin sock stretch it out much over tone or few times ? I sometimes need this cuz bad back, but not really. Hope if make it to old I could still get 1 of these & still being made,not home out of business. Needs a bit improvement it seems so not fall apart.
well thanks for your video on the sock slider, as shown it a little difficult in the first instance, as you use it a few times I became more proficient with the SS and I give it 7-8 out of 10, with all the physical issues I have it helps both on and off with those difficult shoes and socks, thank again for the video, as my unit did not arrive with instruction sheets of assembly or use but I managed by not panicking, when I found your video, cheers.

Roundabout the 7.47 mark the sock slider is slowly coming apart.

I have this and having hip and knee problems, it is a godsend! I don't have nearly as much trouble with mine. I just make sure the sock toe is all the way at the top when I slide my foot in.
I have sock slider and found I have to stand up to get the sock on and the shioe horn didn’t work for me.
I have severe arthritis of the hip, also problems with my back and I am waiting for a hip operation this device has been a Godsend. I have no idea why you are struggling and making it look more difficult than it is. It's so easy to use on any socks I've had no problem.

If your back is cant you just use sandals maybe ? Slipers? .. I mean after you get your socks on how do you then put on well fitting shoes and tie them? If needed..

Anybody with ANY kind of physical discomfort does NOT need to use this.
I have one of these and it works fine. You are struggling with it because you are sitting too low. Much easier to use if you are sitting on something higher like a dining chair. I also noticed that you haven't got the top part fixed into the base properly. You can see this at the end of the video. When it is attached correctly you don't see any gaps between the the two parts. This is why it came apart in your demonstration.
My thoughts also.
If you watch the videos that promote the sock slider, it seems like a breeze to do. But I know a number of people who need compression socks, and after seeing your video, this is NOT the gadget for them! You need a good deal of finger, hand, and arm strength and/or coordination in your upper body extremeties.. Most people who have trouble putting on their socks in the first place, usually have these issues to contend with as well.....which is one of the reasons socks are difficult for them in the first place (not just the bending). If you are elderly, or have a muscle weakness, this is the ultimate in frustration. Thanks for such an honest and thorough review!! I was considering this for a few people until I saw more realistic reviews like yours. I am not wasting my money nor the sanity of the recipients I had intended them for! Thanks again!

In January I was fine. A couple months and a dead nerve later I can't put on my socks without this tool. When simple things get difficult it's good find help. And this product helps me. Hope it can help you.

I wear 20 to 30 compression and am also learning to use this Sock Slider. So hard to put on compression socks. Still trying. Hard to get them on this so the toe is close to the hole
I use to make something like this out of cardboard back in the 80s in a occupational therapy department that we call a sock aid and we use to put the sock at the end of the cardboard tube we made. At the top we had to ribbons that we put so they can pull with. They would put the tube on the floor and slide their foot in the tube and would pull on the ribbons and the tube would pull the whole sock up their foot and leg. It worked much better then this one since it’s working backward from how we had designed it.
i love it just got today i have mild form of cerable paulsy took me 5 to 10 minuts to put socks on on now only 5 secs

Interesting concept and it looks like you got the hang of it but i dont see myself using it. I have major back issues but it just looks like too much work but thats just my opinion.
I got one of these as I can't get socks on because of lumbar fractal joint syndrome stopping me bending and my UK size 14's are a struggle to get on my feet, I usually end up pushing the cradle off the base but have found it easier to just stand up and use it, that stick that come with it always falls apart. Even with all the faults it's helped me get my socks on every day.

Had back surgery and it takes a couple of times with compression socks,but video she'd the light!

I have the same one you had and u love it. I broke my hip and had it fused so I can't Reach Out far down to put a sock on anymore so I use this and it works great for me

I am overweight and canr reach my feet very well so I struggle putting socks on. i just got my sock slider in the mail and just put my sock on in seconds with no problem. I love it!
I pretty well need help on getting my socks on, especially for my left foot.
The SOCK SLIDER worked well for me. I use long, tube athletic socks, and found that using my other foot to step down on the base of the SS to hold it in place on the floor helped a lot. Two thumbs up.
Thanks for reviewing this. Was thinking about getting it for my mother. Looks like it might help with compression socks. Any help getting those on is better than nothing.
