This video aims to give you a general idea of what each and every Boss overdrive/distortion pedal currently in production sounds like, into a consistent, pedal friendly platform (Fender 5e3, Fractal AX8). It would probably take years to do a truly comprehensive video, but this will hopefully help provide the first step in comparing these great pedals against each other and deciding which one might work for your setup!
Big thank you from the bottom of my heart for not talking and just comparing them with the same riff. This video is great help for me.
Thanks for your kind comment :)
I know right finally!
4:25 love for the DS-2!!
Actually a really nice dirt pedal in my personal opinion.
Its able to get a certain throaty midrange like the FB-2 when you crank up the character knob on it.
Not really a thing you can do with an EQ or a cocked wah pedal, and I've never seen an overdrive with that range to use as a filter post distortion....
If the DS-1 could do that people wouldn't sell them
I just bought one for $70 and it's one of my favorite pedal purchases ever
SD-1 The best low price overdrive ever! the midrange crunch the tube amp perfect.
This is like the color chromatic scale, but from the most soft overdrive to aggressive distortion.
Thanks for sharing this!
Absolutely well done!
The SD-1 into a mostly dirty tube amp has been my favorite for 30 years! Thanks for the video. The BD-2 and OD-3 sound like I may check them out.
Man...that bend in the first sectuon of the riff gave me mad chills that's soul brother!!!
That was great 👍- the OD-1X sounded really good - I need to get that . The blues driver is still my all time favourite- sounds great in any amp .
Most interesting pedal video I have seen in awhile. And helpful too!!! Thank you!
OD3 is the best! Incredible sound, very balanced! No mid scoop, no muddy, no mid push, just perfect!
LOVE my ML-2 pedal. gives the best metal tones when used through a tube amp and high output pick-ups.
Boss DS-2! Great demo!
OD1X sounds great
Wow Incredible video man Thanks!
Like how you included the combo drive and power stack here!
This video is extremely helpful. Thanks!
Neighbor: can you find another song
I had to move to another country
I think that the much maligned metal zone had one of the best lead sounds!
The MT-2 is awesome when you use it right!
When he set the mids with the Frequency at around 2 o clock and the mid gain at around 3, for like a second and a half- I thought this was one of the sweetest sounding of the pedals, (But my fave has been the Turbo Distortion)...I would have liked to hear it (Metal Zone) on this particular Bluesey Rock (joe walsh-esque) riff, with that particular mid set up, the treble and the bass both backed off to 11:30, and the Gain knob dialed down a bit...The EQ section is very powerful on this much maligned pedal....I might buy one right now.
The x pedals really sound great. More organic and nice😊
that helped me understand all these pedals out there a bit better- trying to figure out the one to use on a Fender Rhodes
Loved the DS-1, Power Stack and Combo Drive. All 3 sound beefy with loads of gain. Power chords sound huge with plenty of sustain.
RJC 72 I guess everyone is different. I thought the Ds-1 sounded awful. In fact the ds-1x and mega distortion actually sounded better to me, which was a surprise.
DS-2 an old friend, DS-1 I've never used sounded incredible!
Proof that a good player sounds great no matter what the gear! I like the Blues Driver for the lick but also it has a level eq response that lets your good gear sing.
super cool video!
I have the md2..its got a nice fuzzy sound, great for djent sound. Works great with a fenda amp.
Great example video, thanks.
Was called to the stage on jam night and had to play through the host rig. Strat with twin and this turbo pedal. That's it. Not bad time. Was surprised
Love them all.
great video. love your riff, is it possible to show us how you play this please?
DS-1X sounds pretty good.
You sir have done a great service to mankind :o)
I ll second that!
Love these videos, they're addictive.
But to my ears they're all more or less the same. The differences, most of the time, are so subtle. Still, great post!
The good ole DS-1 still sounds best to my ears, but I am impressed with the DS-2 and DS-1x. Will have to check those out.
I was just watching a complete boss shootout and this video popped up, sweet, have to say while the x series doesnt sound bad it definately doesnt sound how I like an overdrive to sound too processed and tight.
Great video, made me make up my mind what i wanna buy. Now can we get tabs for that lick? Cheers
I find that Fenders make the best pedal platforms because they just gel very well with whatever you throw at them, especially Fenders that have a Presence control. If you EQ it right you can go from a crystal clear tone to searing metal crunch with the right pedal. Boss pedals are just great. I've been using them since the 80s. I have a Waza Super Overdrive and it's amazing with my Fender Bassbreaker. I also use a ProCo Rat 2 and a Friedman BE OD. I recommend going the Fender + Pedal rout as it offers far more versatility and reliability than Marshalls and most British amps.
well said...the fender tonemaster twin reverb is great with pedals out front...sounds way better than using distortions. Overdrives with my Marshall DSL 100
great video
nice vid btw
Hey man, from one Samurai to another, could you do a video comparing the Boss MT-2W to the Boss DS-1X? I would really love to see that. Cause apparently no one has made that video yet. Ive been searching and i cant find it and i would just really love to see and hear the difference.
Id really like to hear what it would sound like with the OD-1X pushing the DS-1X also. Gotta lot of videos of people demoing both pedals but i havent seen one yet, where someone tried using both simultaneously.
Cool video
This is great.
Now they have the metal zone mt-2w which has the waza custom switch like with the super overdrive . As with the super over drive it cuts some of the edge off the sound while pushing the mid .
I got a Turbo Overdtice that o realy like cause it's very versatile. From your comparison the ones i like better is the OD-3 and the original Blues driver, altough i dig the custom mode in waza craft too.
Picked up a DS-1 for $25, had it modded for $40, and I'd put it up against any boutique distortion. It competes well above what I've invested!
Nice! What mods did you get done?
am doing the SEM mod sounds promising
hey how come u didnt include the boss OS-2 overdrive/distortion ??
Mega Distortion FTW
this colour is fantastic , im crazy with this sound of the overdive od1x , never see a same here in argentine! we are in the century past , how much this pedal in dolars ? thank you
OD-3 for the win. I have one. Not much between it and the Blues Driver imo however, either one will do ya nicely.
I first saw this video when I started compiling my collection of BOSS pedals. I realized about a year later that there were many more early pedals out there, after reading a timeline that someone had posted that had all the BOSS pedals ever made up until 2013. Obviously, there have been a few more released since then, such as the Waza Craft versions (re-engineered, reissues of original designs). So, after many hours of searching, I was able to purchase one of every form of the list to be able to say that there are a few more that people interested in the differences should consider. They all have a unique character to them, which was why they were developed in the first place.
This shootout is missing a few to be considered 'every":
DN-2 Dyna Drive
JB-2 Angry Driver
PW-2 Power Driver
DA-2 Adaptive Distortion
FB-2 Super Feedbacker/Distortion
HM-2 Heavy Metal
HM-3 Hyper Metal
MZ-2 Digital Metalizer
[BC-2 and ST-2 Power Stack are both amp simulators, and simulate that amp being overdriven, so when compared to other gain/boost/overdrive/distortion, the listener needs to understand that these should be considered for what they are (a Vox AC30 and a Marshall JCM800 stack simulator, respectively)], and not a progression through the various forms of gain until break-up (distortion), and some pedals have touch dynamics built in for sensitivity (like the DN-2, or OD-1X, and DS-1X which have MDP to analyze and optimize the signal).
Here is a more comprehensive list of Gain/Boost, Fuzz, Overdrive, and Distortion (but not the current Waza Craft models):
FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz
FZ-5 Fuzz
DN-2 Dyna Drive
BD-2 Blues Driver
OD-1X Overdrive
OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion
OD-3 Overdrive
SD-1 Super Overdrive
SD-2 Dual Overdrive
JB-2 Angry Driver Overdrive
DF-2 Super Feedbacker/Distortion
FB-2 Feedbacker/Boost
PW-2 Power Driver
DA-2 Adaptive Distortion
DS-1 Distortion
DS-1X Distortion
XT-2 Xtortion
MD-2 Mega Distortion
DS-2 Turbo Distortion
ML-2 Metal Core Distortion
HM-2 Heavy Metal
HM-3 Hyper Metal
MZ-2 Digital Metalizer (STEREO)
MT-2 Metal Zone
If you could re-do the shootout with all these, I think a lot more people would benefit from it because it was a very good test with the track in the loop so that all those factors were equal. If not, then there is a list so anyone else who watches this can search YT for a demonstration of the other pedals not heard here to help choose or prioritize their pursuit of the next pedal to build their own collection and be creative with.
It's definitely on my list to refresh this video BUT I'm sure you realise that it is a LOT of work haha
You've left out my fave of all, the OS-2
Oh man, just realised that it wasn't in the big box that I got from Boss!! Will remedy that if I can get my hands on one, and do a supplemental video. Good spot!
You also left out the OD-2. At 4:17 that's a DS-2 Turbo Distortion, not the DS-2 (sic, OD-2!) Turbo Overdrive. It's still in production, I believe.
Anders Rasch I have of those and it's very nice.very versatile! =)
I like DS-1 at 12 most of the time.
whats the speaker? doesnt sound fuzzy like youd expect of a 5e3
I own five Boss dirt pedals and love all!
Love the riff. Sounds like a horse screaming!
I'm impressed with the MD2.
That one stood out to me also, among the Distortions.
It’s a sleeper pedal. Two band eq and a soft clipping circuit going into a hard clipping circuit. It fixed a lot of problems people had with distortions.
Perfección.
What guage strings are being used ?
Good video with a lot of interesting sounds. If I could make a suggestion it would be to start with all the knobs at 12, then turn the gain all the way down, then turn the gain all the way up, then set the pedal knobs to where you think sounds best. That way there would be a little bit more consistency. But overall a very good video. Thanks for doing it.
Where are the HM-2 and the Fuzzes?
The old standard Boss still sound the best (to my ear). The combo drive is a nice one I didn't know. Many of them sound harsh; too harsh to my taste.
Just bought one on Ebay for $80
where's my OS-2?
i know right?
Isn't it in your rig???
That rift drives you nuts after a few loops!
Only took 1 play thru for me
so whats the best?, in my opinion those with the x on it, and the shiny knobs sound better, ...
No DF-2, my favorite of their distortions!
Where are the OS-2, and FZ-5 Fuzz? Those two were still in production.
Yeah, this was good.
The overdrive OD1X and the combo drive BC2 sounded the best here and similar to each other. 2 of the better sounding Boss pedals.
My top 3:
1. DS-2
2. SD-1
3. BC-2
Whats with not putting the gain up??????
I was really hoping the hm2/3 and mz 2 would be on here, but those aren't in production any longer.
I like the md2
Boss pedals rules, always have!! My board= mt-2,ds-1, sd-1 boss eq, boss noise suppressor and Morley bad horsie 1 wah.. Been playing metal since 82,all I have ever used, all you need!! No need for the X series, mods or Waza bullshit. All boss old school!!
Nice
My favorites were the overdrive (OD 1x) and the Metal Zone.
Shit I'm buying a DS2 now for that second setting. Really cool sound
Bd-2 and power stack!😁
What about the best the boss turbo over drive OD-2?
I have od-2. It's not as good as the SD-1 even in Turbo mode.
OD2 = amazing pedal
Boss DF-2?
The fact that you wouldn't dime the gain on a lot of these really irritated me
He gave me the blue balls..
srvfan42 and wouldn’t bring the tone back when he did dial it up. Ugh
Kinda random twist
They don't sound the best at all the way up.
I didn't see the Dyna drive. that one isn't bad. Metal core is my favorite and the super overdive
DS-2
DS1x has it freakin ALL!!
I used to own an OD-3 and it was stolen :( What a great pedal
Definitely hear that chili peppers sound in the ds2
It's the Blues Driver that comes first. That's because it's easy to blend in. Followed by the Boss digital metalizer distortion pedal which you don't have. W Percival from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Love the MZ-2! This was done with all drive pedals in production at that time :)
You have missed the Boss OS-2. I have the SD-1 and OS-2. Great pedals.
How do you play guitar and screw with the dials?
I used a looper :)
Oh cool
three hands monster
I thought the DS2 actually sounded really cool on the turbo setting
SD1 & DS2 all night long !!!
funk49 james gang riff?
ds2 on mode 2 is so good
2nd one of these type of videos I've seen where the metal zone mid eq is only used to boost things not cut anything. I find that strange.
Lot of pedals left out, if anyone finds this comment and wants a more in-depth video shootout check out the one by Cameron Johnson on UA-cam. Came out a little earlier than this one.
what suits the most for pop punk/ alternative rock ?
Depemds what amp you're using and if it's in the front or effects loop.
I personally use the St-2 for lead
no SD-2 dual overdrive?
It's funny how different sounds we like. I think the DS1 sounds like crap but obviously others like it, otherwise it wouldn't be sold everywhere.
I'm surprised by the metal zone, it doesn't sound as bad as everyone says. I think it depends on how you use the mid.
I did miss the hm2 in this video though.
👍
Thanks for watching! Absolutely agree, have never been a huge fan of the DS-1 myself either. This was all of the BOSS drives in production at the time of the video, so unfortunately the HM-2W didn't exist yet.
You missed the Overdrive/Distortion pedal, my favourite one :ccc
where's the hm-2?
Sonic Titan BOSS HM-2 Heavy Metal was only produced in 1983-1992. Meaning, HM-2 is already out of production.
alvinTVph you can buy then second hand though
Could you do this with all knobs set to 12 oclock?
i love my Ds-1
+rockproducer28 have you tried the DS-1X? I really dig it
I love the Ds-1's price. I wouldn't say i love the pedal because for me theres only one useable area in the tone. If you go marginally too far to the right it gets nasty quick in the thin treble zone, you go left its dull and lifefeless but Once you hit that sweet spot it stacks up well but if you go out of that very narrow range it becomes horrendous tone. The DS-1X gives you a bit more scope that is still tone friendly. But again DS1 price is where most pedals should be. DS-1X is like more than double the price.
I did til I found an OCD which made the DS-1 sound like a buzz saw. I am doing the SEM mod on the DS-1 which is making it sound much better
I have an OCD and still love my DS-1 because sometimes buzz-saw tones are exactly what is required to give a guitar its definition in a mix.
As awesome as the OCD is, I find it just doesn't cut it when I'm working alongside vintage electric piano type sounds, for example - either the guitar buries the piano or the piano buries the guitar, depending on which is louder, and in either case, having both of those sounds simultaneously makes for a very cluttered midrange unless they are playing in totally different registers all the time. In that situation, the DS-1 the right tool for the job!
3 least fav:
Power Stack
Combo Drive
Metal Zone
3 most fav:
Mega Distortion
Metal Core
Overdrive
Power Stack sounded like absolute shit and I was surprised, and expected it to be the best
@@Kapiwolf123 I wonder if he was going through the front of the amp and not the effects loop. Ive seen some vids (Metal Zone and DS-1 specifically) where they sounded better through the effects loop with a slight dirty channel or overdrive booster
@@budgiecat2885 Yeah me too actually. and in here I'm pretty sure it was in front of the amp.
BOSS BD-2
