    In today's Tiny House Tour, we're touring an amazing 3D printed tiny home by 3DCP Group in Holstebro, Denmark. After taking a look inside their tiny house, their CEO, Mikkel, gives us some backstory about their company, vision and the tiny home build which created using COBOD International's printer.

    The concept is very interesting, but as an engineer, the first question that pops to mind is how is the concrete reinforced? I'm guessing that there are fibers included in the concrete mix since the videos don't show any rebar. But how does that translate into mechanical strength - wind strength, seismic withstand, etc - they are critical factors and can't be ignored. Also, there is the matter of how are in-wall utilities (piping, wiring, etc) handled?

    • @nashvillain171
      @nashvillain171 Рік тому +7

      The reinforcement was my question also. As a civil engineer myself, I cringe thinking about that wind turbine base having to endure the moment forces of the turbine in heavy winds.

    Interesting concept, but that concrete bothers me. For one thing, it's in a country that is very dark during the winter. Seems like all that gray would be depressing to live with. Also, with the concrete being rough, it would collect a lot of dust, and would also be painful if you happened to bump into it.

    • @alexandriawest
      @alexandriawest Рік тому +7

    I love this idea. For young people, it’d be a great opportunity. But for older folks like me, I’d prefer no second story except for a rooftop deck, which I assume would be possible. They’d need to figure out how to make the surfaces smooth so they wouldn’t injure old skin or collect dust that would affect breathing. This prototype is an exciting first step. They’ll need to keep in mind that bookshelves and other storage units (for me, it’d be for lots of knitting materials) and closets are essential. But no ladders, no cramped up-the-ladder sleeping quarters. Not for me, id est.

  • @pepperpotty

    Great video on a really interesting topic. I remember hearing about 3D printed homes in the US a few years ago and was really excited by the concept, but then nothing ever came of it (or so I thought). I'd love to see these as an affordable housing option. Here in the states we have a horrible housing crisis which encompasses homelessness and a massive lack of affordable housing options. A lot of our military veterans are homeless and while there are people who are trying to come up with tiny homes and other options to help them, this seems like it might be a more cost effective and efficient way to build homes. I'd be interested in finding out how well these fair in different weather conditions and how they handle in extreme weather, too. I'd say my only "critique" on the prototype home shown in the video would be that heinous ladder to the upstairs hah!

    Touched upon by Mikkel was the issue of labor ( carpenters bodies wearing down ).
    All labor is pretty much the biggest single expense in building a house. Approx. a third by itself.
    It's a delicate subject for sure too.
    Look to the Luddites in England.
    One criticism I have is that the house here is way too complex in shape.
    I guess that's a Euro/Modernist thing to make it more sexy/marketable.
    Maybe something like the American style of shotgun house in a planned development - starter/retirement homes?
    Maybe a hybrid design that still utilized timber framing/roofing?
    Also I thought concrete/cement was one of Climate Religion's bogeymen. Although I notice Germany is starting to wake up to that zealotry.

    This is super interesting, and I wish this company all the success in the world. But I have some questions, and I'd really love if somebody in the comments could clarify for me:
    1. Isn't this naked concrete approach a bit risky? On the outside, concrete won't age well if not covered (treated?), and on the inside I was left with the impression that piping and wiring went through it? Isn't that a no-no for repairs?
    2. That bedroom seems dangerous... it seems a bit risky for me to go pee in the middle of the night and changing the sheets (thankfully, uni students probs. do it twice a year) seems difficult. Would it be easier to have a murphy bed in the living room area below and shave off some of the cubic meterage?
    3. Lastly, in general, are these circular wall shapes convenient? I've never lived in such houses, but it seems to me that they'd leave a lot of unutilized space because most furniture is rectangular?

    The 3-D printing concept seems a good idea for housing. I could see that becoming a thing. As for the comments about the Grey color...add some color to the mix before it starts printing. I don't mind the concrete. Since it's supposed to be for student housing, I'm sure they won't mind climbing a ladder but I actually see them sleeping in the living room and using the loft space for storage. Great concept. Thanx George.

    howdy George, ur correct about "not for your 84 year old grandma"...... also not for 72 year old me.... having to climb up to your bedroom is the downside to tiny homes in my opinion.
    also the small space given to the bathrooms. was there a price point given for this home? i am hoping that with newer technology that the pricing of tiny homes will decrease because they can be pricy. that being said, i liked the rough textured surfaces and being concrete, i would imagine that it retains heat rather well.
    LASTLY, as i and many others on here have stated, i would gladly listen to you reading a book as your voice is sooooo soothing! hoping to see more of your cooking, site seeing, and local videos in the future and for sure videos of the house you and your brother are buying.

    Love the texxtured walls on the outside of the house but would prefer smooth walls on the interior as the ridged walls would trap dust as well as absorbing all the light. OSB board in tne bathroom is never a good idea with all that moisture, it will eventually rot. A ladder up to a sleeping loft is not sustainable even for students, especially after a few drinks. Interesting concept but still a way to go IMO to make a more practical house.

  • @ChristopherSloane

    It is neat but the rough surfaces are not good for waterproofing or keeping the surface clean. Too much dirt and organic material can stick in all those cracks. Having someone on-site to smooth the surface would be useful. For the most part, only really small homes have been highlighted using this process. I think the selling point would be the speed of the construction and cost. Simply to house people without a huge burden of debt. Also incorporating plans so one could expand the home with the same process at a later date like a puzzle piece would be considerate as well.

    I have often thought that we need to build more wind-proof, tornado-resistant homes here in the US. It seems that global warming is making our tornado season longer, both starting earlier and lasting longer into the winter. Question: how many skilled but non-"academic" jobs is this eliminating? It's not sustainable to replace vocational lead roles with tech-interlect roles because we need a variety to suit the variety of people on the planet.

    Few questions.
    1. What the cost per meter and how does it compare to tradicional build
    2. What the BER rating... I don't see any insolation on video :/
    3. Is co concrete reinforced? How many levels can you build?
    4. Concrete in bathroom and kitchen I don't think it higieny and with that structure it's not easy to clean. Prove me wrong
    5. All utilities in walls are they preplaned?
    Few ideas.
    1. Think about colour mix in concrete
    2. Make flat white walls an option... I love concrete walls but that much is to much for me

    If the future is houses as small as they're getting, the only places left with decent sized homes will be Australia, America and Canada.

    Great conception, yes obvious design flaws but an interesting concept for the future in many projects.

    This is a very interesting video George can you please give us an outline of what it might cost for one of these little houses and how cold are they because if they're made of concrete could it be that they are quite cold and difficult to heat as they're not built in a normal construction? 🤔

      Concrete actually retains heat very well.

    Thank you :).
    I find it an odd shape and design for a tiny home, so much wasted space with the wall shape and height etc. you don’t usually have so much height and not take advantage of the it like making a proper second floor. There was no storage And all the curved walls make the actual living areas so much smaller with really no privacy at all. And yes you are absolutely right. The ladder didn’t even seem feasible for a young active student. I wouldn’t want my child going up and down that ladder at night or morning. Being tired and getting up to use the washroom would be dangerous. And you pointed out a real obvious detail. Of course use that shelf area that looks like weird shaped stairs already so why not make it stairs. It looks like it would fit That’s for sure. Odd. This has been around for some time now. I’d think it would be far longer along. But honestly for the same reason we haven’t seem any cheaper housing on a larger scale modular, 3 D , many other great designs so greatly need. And that’s MONEY !! With all the existing businesses trades wanting to keep making big money and keeping their local government happy. There is little want for change. If it cost less .. why would they bother. They don’t want codes changed. That way everyone that is involved with building selling heating etc homes will still get their money.

    I like the texture of the walls, but I cringe thinking how my kids would fare falling against that cheese grater as they learned to walk. I really like this type of building method though.

    So how many square metres makes a "tiny house"? That one looks palatial compared to my (normal) flat.

    I wonder if they could ‘colour’ the concrete white or some lighter colour - all the grey and dark colours are pretty depressing

    Looks great for a small house, I'd prefer to see the inside walls plastered so they could be painted and not look as bare and rugged.

    I really like the curved walls. There must be some steel inside the concrete to give it shear strength?

  • @Bella1899

    I wonder how this would work for non-standalone houses. Like in a city, if a house gets demolished they have to work within the bounds/walls of the neighbouring houses.

    • @lshwadchuck5643
      @lshwadchuck5643 Рік тому

      Good point. There would't be room to use it for those urban in-fill projects.

    • @Bella1899
      @Bella1899 Рік тому

      @@lshwadchuck5643 perhaps they could angle it to reach the walls somehow?

    • @lshwadchuck5643
      @lshwadchuck5643 Рік тому

      @@Bella1899 Well, the whole concept of all 3D printing is an XYZ grid. So any design point in the cube of space included inside the tracks can get a blob of material. The tracks are outside the cube of space and in old urban neighborhoods where there isn't even a driveway between houses, there just wouldn't be room. Maybe if at some point a drone with a hose...
