    It can often be difficult for someone else to work out what power level you’re aiming for. Like, sure, that card/combo is more _powerful_ but that then risks making the deck archenemy when it can’t back that up, at least not without changing the whole identity of the deck, which someone is unlikely to want to do if they haven’t said they do.

    My Mardu Astral Slide suggestion is Scampering Surveyor. It's basically a second Solemn Simulacrum, so synergistically ramp. However, Scampering Surveyor also searches for caves. The one cave that I'm running in my Astral Slide deck is Urza's Cave which searches all your other utility lands, a feat that Solemn Simulacrum cannot achieve

    But when my friend come with a brand new deck with no direction, not knowing what they want to do with it, I don’t give advice. I want them to have their own thesis before I can give advice. I need context.

      As agonizing as that can be, it’s good advice. Some people will never cut bad cards, no matter how much anyone else insists they’re bad. If they ask what to cut, you can make suggestions, but you’re pretty likely to get pushback anyway.

  • @InsomniaticVampire

    Mardu Astral Slide suggestions: Cut to Ribbons is a great way to close out a game from an empty board.
    Weirder suggestion: If Cursed Mirror is a creature like Rummaging Goblin, it can be activated during an end step and exiled by Astral Slide until the next end step.
    Also this gives me a cool idea for an Abdel Adrian deck.

  • @Sedr1s
    @Sedr1s 2 місяці тому +1

    Mardu slide ideas:
    Shadowgrange Archfiend - efficient removal that is good fuel for discard effects. Likely to hit a few high-value creatures at once. Easy to flicker for insane value.
    Chivalric Alliance - if you need card draw or bodies that can defend & attack in the same turn cycle.
    Cryptbreaker - less efficient than chivalric alliance, but the card draw is less dependent on attacking.
    Chainer, Nightmare Adept - a way to discard cards, including on your opponents’ turns. Gives you a way to cast already-cycled creatures from the grave.
    Phyrexian Reclamation - recursion in case you need a previously discarded creature back in your hand.
    Seasoned Pyromancer - self wheel that generates creature tokens. Only useful if you need creature tokens.
    Leave // Chance - returns multiple permanents to your hand in case of a boardwipe or individual permanents (like Astral Slide) to dodge spot removal, while also giving you the Chance half to wheel later. If in a given game you think that you won’t need the Leave half, you can discard it to another effect and still have the Chance half to cast from the grave.
    Lethal Scheme - removal that lets you also discard cards. Has convoke so your creatures can help to cast it for cheaper.
    I build in mardu a lot and love etb playstyles and graveyards. If you’re looking for particular effects or categories of cards, let me know I can probably give more focused recommendations.

  • @majinvegeta6364
    @majinvegeta6364 2 місяці тому +3

    Research and apply quadrant theory when cutting cards.
    Alternatively, consider cutting cards that have a similar effect but cost more and adding cards that cost the same but have a more significant impact on the game.
    This assumes that you already have a good card balance in the deck, but if that's the case, then your deck will only get stronger for doing so.

    • @itslexactually
      @itslexactually Місяць тому +1

      Building on this, put extra emphasis on the development quadrant and the playing from behind quadrant. You are likely to have ways to grind value and a couple ways to jam a win without trying too hard. But knowing how you want to set up the early turns, and what you’d wish to draw when behind, help a lot.

    For Trinkets Mardu Astral Slide deck how about Tectonic Reformation? I've never built an Astral Slide deck so I could be overestimating this card, but in my Ripley Vance deck it's been a great way to filter lands out of my hand late game when I really need to keep hitting cantrips and not lands with my draws.
    The most optimal card for the deck is definitely Phage the Untouchable so that you can go out on your own terms when the game feels hopeless after you've spent 7 mana on a Phage the Untouchable.

    For the Madru Cycling deck: I got a buddy whos working on a list like that with Extus to basically mimic the pauper cycling deck. Adding etb creatures with recursion or other fun effects could be an interesting angle.
    I myself am working on a slide cycle deck. Mine's in esper, but the theme could carry over nicely. Epic spells.
    Cycling is a game action you can take that epic doesn't stop. I plan on using astral slide and drift to control the board while my epic spell of choice does its thing. Enduring ideal is a fun choice because it can find slide and drift while also finding pillow forts effects and wincons.

    They let you do the thing and as long as that thing isn't a legit cEDH combo (not "eveything that beats my deck is cEDH" bs) then it just means that you get to participate more often. That's a good thing, including and especially at casual tables.

    Great episode guys! I've certainly been one to offer the wrong kind of advice in the past, and will a hundred percent do so again. Because, here are some unsolicited suggestions for Snail, as well as some asked for suggestion for Khan.
    For both Khan and Snail:
    - "Shadow of the Grave" for some massive card advantage and anti-discard tech.
    - "Bitter Ordeal" can be absolutely backbreaking, either as a silver bullet sniper, a flat out win-condition, or somewhere inbetween!
    - "Abandoned Sacophagus" could be an interesting recursion engine top plop down once you have the engine going. You'd want to be careful with this one however, as the downside can be pretty brutal.
    Somewhat pricier cards both can run:
    - "Bone Miser" is waste not, but for your own stuff that might allow you to go off just that tiny bit harder.
    - "Crucible of Worlds" lets you play those sweet sweet lands you cycled away earlier! (This also scales really well into higher budget decks that run fetches, shocks and duals!)
    - "Enlightened Tutor" can serve as another copy of the slide-effects, or a way to find another utility enchantment or artifact.
    - "Vampiric Tutor" same as Enlightened, but even more flexible.
    For Khan:
    - "Archfiend of Ifnir" is a persistent boardwipe on a reasonably sized beater.
    - "Tectonic reformation" a way to turn excess lands into value.
    - "Change of Fortune" for a really synergistic hand refueling spell.
    - "The Raven Man" triggers on ANY discard, making you a 1/1 flier, while also having in-built insurance.
    As for the commander of the deck, I think either of these would serve you the best:
    - "Queen Marchesa" to have a light payoff in the command zone
    - "Ghen, Arcanum Weaver" to have recursion for your theme.
    If you go with "Ghen, Arcanum Weaver":
    - "Land Tax" to grab more basic lands than you'll ever need, or trade it for a slide if you no longer need it!
    - "Scroll rack" to synergize with "land tax", effectively drawing you 3 extra card, per turn!
    For Snail:
    - "Pilgrim's Eye" to possibly replace "Burnished Hart". While it doesn't actively ramp, it will ensure you at least get to play lands reliably while playing better into the slide portion of the deck.
    - "Skittering Surveyor" a second copy of "Pilgrim's Eye". Ish...
    Remember, while these are cards I'd recommend considering or even trying, they aren't necessarily what either deck needs. Hopefully this has been of at least some help. Happy brewing!

    For Trinket Mage Deck Suggestion: It’s kind of (extremely) jank, but Enduring Renewal is interesting. I had it in my Karador deck before I took it apart, and it works… fine… if you’re wanting to put things in the grave. Darkblast is also good with cycling at instant speed to fill the grave. Also, Pit Keeper is just a good flicker target if you’re running a bit of a flicker package with cycling to return the cycled card (if it’s a creature). Also, obligatory Blood Miser.

    This is a cool topic to talk about. Good video.
    Deck advice is indeed a tricky topic from what I've seen and experienced first hand. Everyone has an opinion and usually that opinion is rooted in personal preferences. Aside from generic advice meant for helping a new player to the game, I don't think anyone can just look at a deck in 2 minutes and come up with meaningful advice for changes.
    A friend wanted to see my Indominus Rex Alpha deck list. He immediately suggests that I run Baleful Strix. I told him I didn't want to run that card because it doesn't do enough to justify a 2-mana slot. I'd rather be ramping on turn 2. And for mid and late game, Rex herself offers far more card draw than this.
    He counters back saying that on curve, Strix is still worth it regardless.
    Is he right? Is he wrong? Are we both right AND wrong?

    This discussion really touched on something I've been noticing and thinking about a lot which is just that EDH players are VERY synergy-focused, which is fine and understandable but I think often goes so far as to be detrimental to their actual deckbuilding and gameplay. I think a lot of players would benefit from fewer, more focused or efficient synergy pieces and simply playing more lands or veggies or cards that address weaknesses. Mardu Slide deck idea:
    The War Doctor - 2RW, 3/5. He gets counters whenever anything is exiled (or phased out) and does damage equal to counters to any target when he attacks. He's mostly a finisher and, honestly, he's more cute than he is good.
    He leads a cycling deck list I made, paired with Vislor Turlough, who is a sleeper agent style creature and the only black card with Doctor's Companion. Mostly cycling creatures, some gravedigger and repeatable raise dead effects, and hoping to top off with a Living Death. Again, more nifty than powerful.

    Personally I love all deck suggestions, when I build my decks I have a really close friend I generally show it to during or after and I love getting all the suggestions because in the early stages it helps establish a identity and when I show a already finished deck I either get cards I haven’t thought about or cards I had considered but what I do is I think/ask about why they suggest it which I use to evaluate the cards either currently or about it add to the deck and my deck is almost always better even when the only recommendations I get are cards I had already thought of.

    When talking about pings across multiple opponents, 10 pings I look at more as 30 damage to the table instead of 10 damage to players. 30 damage for 3 mana sounds playable even if it's on the higher end of the spectrum of Pharika activations. I probably should use Tyvar in my Sisay list, Golgari is more useful than the Gruul alternative, but the ability can't be johnnied the same way since you can't use Emiel to flicker Tyvar like you can Samut (this comes up probably 1/1000 games though so why do I worry??).
    I used to find it hard to change decks up, but one of the biggest helpers with this problem was realizing first and foremost if you're JUST upgrading your deck you don't want to play much with your ratios anymore, so you just take out the worst version of the effect and move on with life. Or, you keep the bad cards in because they're more fun. I've gotten to the point now where now if I struggle to fit a card in I just set it in the 'stuff I'm thinking about adding' pile and forget about it for a bit, because it probably isn't as good a fit as I first thought for a variety of reasons. Some stuff seems really good when you haven't tested it, but testing can reveal flaws you failed to recognize.

    • @brendans1983
      @brendans1983 2 місяці тому +1

      Knowing your power level is easy, it's figuring out whether everyone else has the same idea as you when it comes to said power.
      I've been playing for +10years, so what I consider medium-power is a lot of new players' high-power.
      If you are a new player and built your own deck, then it's power level is the same as your ability.
      If you have net-decked an experienced players build, then you probably have a powerful deck and may need to let the table know, so everyone is on the same page. Every content creator has their own opinions and views, which may not sync up with the other people you are playing with.

    QUESTION ZONE: how do you evaluate the power level of a deck? I got into mtg over the summer and I find it very difficult to evaluate the power level of decks I make (or that other people make/play). I play at some high power tables and proxy everything so budget is not a super relevant factor. Even when I make expensive decks, I usually get blown out of the water.

    • @FiveFootFall
      @FiveFootFall Місяць тому

      You ignore that as a relevant descriptor of your deck. Keep brewing, keep playing, and see what your friends who are doing well are doing. If you think your current decks have potential to become the runaway train in the game make small changes at first, though after a while you will want to start again from the ground up.
      Make sure you have enough lands in your deck; more if you search for them or less if your mana curve is low. Play about as many creatures as you play lands. Like Trinket Mage would recommend, play more removal. It can take some time to get a good grasp on card synergies or even understanding card advantage, so don't press yourself too hard for losing or being blown out, especially in Commander. The format itself is about doing overpowered things that are easier to do in a multiplayer game.
      Just keep playing and watching others you play with. Don't take any advice (even mine) as gospel. If you keep playing with the intention to do better you will invariably become a better player and deck builder.

    This episode is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the average EDH player. Most players, sure there's always that guy (stop looking at me!), are not offering advice to "flex," especially in regard to synergy pieces. They just see a possible interaction that looks fun to them and want to share the joy it brings them with others including and especially if they like a content creator. The appropriate response is, "Thank you. I'll look into it."

    • @33elk
      @33elk 2 місяці тому

      I feel like you missed the point of this one, the "wanting to flex" part was really a small part of this topic. We got into how to give better advice later on in the episode. Sharing an interaction doesn't need to be formatted in the frame of advice either, you can just drop a comment about it without being like "here's an upgrade!" No problem if you do that of course, but its a lot more straightforward.
      I'm not slapping on a "Thank you!" mask every time someone gives me poor advice. Feels incredibly fake to do so. Not the kinda culture im trying to cultivate. Sometimes I'll respond to inquiries about additions to my deck with counter points about why I don't have them, and ignore duplicate suggestions.

    • @majinvegeta6364
      @majinvegeta6364 2 місяці тому +1

      @33elk nah dude, I got your point, and as usual, you missed mine. I was addressing the underlying assumption you and Snail make about WHY people are giving you the kind of advice you do not appreciate.
      The rest of your response goes back to a recurring theme in our online interactions.
      You're just rude.
      I have numerous parasocial relationships with a variety of creators where I comment, they reply, etc. Few are ever as toxic as my interactions with you always turn out to be. You are always defensive, twist my words to argue against strawmen every time, and never ask questions (ironically something you recommend others do in this video) to reach a consensus.
      There's a reason that I really enjoy Trinketmage's content and have your channel blocked from popping up on my feed. Please stop harassing me when I comment on his video that you are unfortunately a part of.

      @33elk there are lots of creators that I think miss the mark from time to time. Nobody is perfect, after all. But I really dislike you on a personal level.
      Not only are your takes bad, but you argue in bad faith to defend them rather than critically engaging with differing views. You also make sure to get a passive-aggressive personal attack in every response. Why do you have to be like that? There are plenty of ways to engage in healthy dialog even among your detractors, but you choose to repeat this same pattern over and over again.
      Look, I know that the internet is a big place and there's always going to be a certain number of people that you just can not get along with for whatever reason. I have accepted that we are that person for one another. As I said before, I blocked your channel a long time ago for that very reason. I would very much appreciate it if you didn't subject me to your vitriol in a space / community that I otherwise very much enjoy being a part of.
