Well the mightstone and weakstone gave Karn the Planeswalker spark from Urza right, so they could make a mightstone and weakstone equipment Planeswalker maybe
Exhaust: maybe the creature could have gotten a -1/-1 counter on use .... that would be thematik with the name exhaust and i think amonketh had those counters ... However i like the name and the idea of one time use abilities😊 Different than start your engines! And for mirrodin!.... I hate those names as abilities 😅
I wish Speed inscreased "once each of your turns when you activate a non-mana ability" because the tap symbol has the motion of revving a motorcycle handle, or even the ones that aren't tap abilities like, spending mana or sacrificing permanents feels like "adding fuel" to a card. Life loss feels weird it's like, when my Vehicles deal damage is because they crash into my opponent that would stop their speed!! Also this way creatrues or vehicles with Haste would support the idea of going fast with Speed, allowing you to increase it the same turn they come out!! (This is, of course, a very silly opinion just for the fun of it; ludonarrative is one of my favorite things to think about!)
Mirror mirror : i sac my neighbors dog to scry 1. If you were going to build a reanimator deck what commander would you choose. My personal favorite is the 8 mana Sauron from the lotr precon
The aetherspark is going to be pretty cool in my Galea Kindler of Hope deck, where you can cast out from the top of your library, auto equip it to Galea, Voltron strike someone, and get to use whatever mode I want right away
I like the feel of the Aetherspark just because its like, "oh, your commander can be a planeswalker!" Which is like, a fun idea! Plus, it adds a teensy bit of card draw to colors that won't normally have too much repeatable card draw. I think it's fun, but not format warping.
Imagine a mechanic for aggro that gives a creature a certain ability when it deals combat damage to a player, but in return they have to attack each and every combat step. And you just use a counter to track it. Like a "Turbo" counter. That wouldve felt more like a speed related thing.
i wouldnt have a problem with start your engines if the flavor of "racing eachother down" in aggro was more integrated into the gameplay and name. i would have called it momentum
I wish the rules behind the exhaust ability went something like "put an exhaust counter on this permanent, a permanent with one or more exhaust counters can't have its exhaust abilities activated" i think that would make it not only easier to track, but leave it more open to both synergies and future cards with the ability.
would make it better because the only way I see re-using exhaust effects off the top of my head is blinking/phasing permanents and getting a new instance of the card. And Loot having 3 Exhaust abilities? Like it totally should have been an exhaust counter based mechanic. I don't use blink effects in my decks so this makes the exhaust mechanic nearly useless to me. When the Start Your Engines! mechanic is more usable even though I despise the name. It really should have been called Momentum because on a revisit to the mechanic it won't be so gimmicky sounding.
i feel like it’s a good idea in theory, but counter strategies that already exist might make the mechanic too accessible when also being able to use blink strats to get multiple activations. i wouldn’t be surprised if that’s something they tried during testing and it didn’t work out
Exhaust kinda reminds me of the old yugioh card twin headed behemoth, as it had a soft once per duel effect, I.e it was once per duel per copy. This though was unintentional as they didn’t know at the time how to write a once per duel effect. It was limited before they figured it out, because it would be hard to track and as a way to make it once per duel cause you only had.
I've been brewing an Archer deck for ages and realized the part that really appeals to me is holding up tap abilities to ping stuff. For Vnwx, Verbose Host, I might actually put it together using stuff like Prodigal Sorcerer and Thornwind Faeries that have {t}: ~ deals 1 damage to any target. Could build up speed quick and there's lots of neat effects for dealing damage to opponents or creatures. Not just curiosity effects, but also things like Sigil of Sleep and Dismiss Into Dream. There's admittedly only a small amount of "pingers" in mono blue (that don't have the stupid "activate only during your turn before attackers are declared" clause), but it could be interesting. Not sure about an exact finisher, but I could always jam the 'ole iso-rev combo in there for if games go super late.
They just made a new commander that gives you a card when you exile one or more cards from a graveyard didn't they? That's like the only one you could do.
Graveyard hate isn't a theme, it's one of the functions you put into a deck. Like what are you gonna do if none of your enemies play stuff that interacts with the yard? How are you gonna win?
Look no further than this very set friend. Ketramose, the New Dawn will let you draw(and lose a life) each time you Exile a creature from the field or graveyard on your turn. So, every single random 2-drop artifact becomes a cheap, repeatable draw engine with Ketramose in play. That's just one of the ways you can build him. Blink will be thr obvious pick, but you can do so much more, you can go for embalm/eternalize to Exile creatures in your grave that turn into card Advantage. You can play a grindy pile of efficent Midrange threats and Exile removal that now replaces itself on your turn that doesn't gas out easily. You can do funny shit like make an Astral Slide Cycling deck, turning every card you cycle into 2 cards in hand, plus an Exile on board.(your turn only though) Hope that helps!
Yeah, you really can't make that a deck theme. Unless you are up against decks that use the yard it does nothing. Sure you COULD mill your opponents so you can exile their stuff, but at that point its just a mill deck.
They could have made cards with exhaust flip cards, with the back side identical except for not having the exhaust ability. Makes its super clear when its used or not, refreshes on blink still, plus gets some fun shenanigans with cards that flip double face cards.
Alright, here's the mathematician's way of handling that three exhaust ability card: The first ability is 1, the second 2, and the third 4. Put a d8 with the 7 on top on the card after it enters the battlefield. Then when you use an exhaust ability, subtract its number from the d8. This way you're using binary to encode which of them are usable or unusable.
I think Mendicant Core looks good with the yellow. The yellow scheme I think actually matches the aesthetics of the Guidelight Voyagers, the funny little robots that look like they spray paint their stuff yellow.
Mirror Mirror: I cast Rakdos Charm and exile my own graveyard to ask you this question: How much do you share about your deck when playing against new opponents? On one extreme you could share nothing other than your commander and play close to the chest. On the extreme you could tell them exactly what cards to look out for and how to disrupt your wincon, playing as openly as possibly. Which side do you tend to and why?
Mirror mirror. At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice Krosan Cloudscraper unless you pay GreenGreen. In your opinion, what is the most Timmy card of all time?
Mirror Mirror, I sacrifice two mountains to ask: What are some of the most interesting builds you've seen of popular commanders? Asking partially in reference to the recent Atraxa videos.
Not sure how often this would come into play, but because full throttle allows creatures to untap at the beginning of each combat phase, it does alleviate the problem of when you copy the effect of Karlach or FOMO(or in my case, when you stack their effects cause you cloned them before hand and have no way of untapping you're swung board).
I think start your engines will be an aggro mechanic that will help aggro decks not totally lose pace, which is definitely something that could help EDH as a format
Mirror mirror on the wall I pay 2 blue mana and my left kidney, with the recent boom in UB sets this year and the UUB at the end, what franchise do you want to / think would be interesting to see in MTG, personally, I am really hoping for a Monster hunter UB one day
I'm so excited to build a Hashaton cEDH list. ComedianMTG did a review of the card the other day and man it's making me churn! I was originally gonna skip this step but I'm grabbing the precon to rip Hashaton out of it
I have built a loot deck and am planning on having each exhaust represented by three different cards i painted the colors on and have different sleeves- mind you i love having a million game pieces
I think Exhaust should be relatively easy to track since hopefully the person playing with it will know they did the one time thing and commander has a few more people to help keep track. But I do see how it can get confused since the "Once Per Game Effect" isn't once per game due to how the rules work.
Mirror Mirror, I pay 1 black and sacrifice six shadowborn apostles to tutor razaketh the foulblooded onto the battlefield and ask you this one question, what is the biggest clutch you've had in a game of magic? Mine has to be when I was playing Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom, and Okaun Eye of Chaos, I won like 8 coin flips flips in a row of Okaun's ability and was able to chandra's ignition him wiping out everybody the turn before the Jetmir player swung out and killed all of us.
Hazoret looks like the best Start Your Engines enabler. A 2 mana indestructible creature that makes weak creatures evasive, ensuring loss of life. Only downside is the Max Speed for Hazoret is mediocre compared to a number of other cards, BUT, they're definitely better positioned with Hazoret being around.
Boy, we talking about Aetherdrift? Let's talk about my major turn off from this set. Endrunners and Far Fortune, End Boss. You really want to tell me, Wizards has one of the few Artifact matters set, focused on vehicles, with a Madmax faction, and they managed to not make Rakdos sac their own vehicles and artifacts to either make their vehicles better or return them?! Daretti is right there in the set! And if your argument is that black isn't good for artifact, i direct your attention to Warhammer 40k Necron deck. They have the technology, they had the theme, the excuse, and they did unfocused rakdos goodslop. Bravo wizards
Mirror mirror I attack with protection from creatures: I've just finished building my first commander that has less than 200 decks Pippin, guard of the Citadel. What are some of your favorite unpopular commanders
mirror mirror, I accidentally mill all of my win conditions to tell a medium length story that ends in a question: My friend really doesn't like cEDH because he thinks that it's boring and that all the decks are the same. I love cEDH on the other hand and there is a cEDH competition where we live in a week or two. I really want to build a deck that no one thinks could preform at that tournament to prove to my friend that you can make very unique and interesting cEDH decks. But I think im in over my head. I'm making a Rocco Caberetti Caterer toolbox eggs storm deck (I now that that sounds really convoluted lol) for the tournament we are allowed to use proxies of the Aetherdrift cards so I really want the main idea of the deck to be flickering brightglass gearhulk tto get a bunch of eggs and crack them to dig to a Krark-clan ironworks and win the game with an Aetherflux resevoir. I'm not positive that that is even a playable concept but I would really like some help with the idea. Do you guys have any specific card recommendations for this concept
Speed feels most like ‘The Ring Tempts You’, except you don’t need a reminder token to remember what each step does. None of these mechanics are great but this is among the best they’ve tried so far, the effects themselves are pretty naff though. Exhaust is fine, I think Magic players need to have more faith in themselves. You’re gonna remember if you exhausted or not.
i played against a rule 0ed sab sunen the other day and it was hoping it would be pretty interesting but simic +1/+1 counters is so well supported already you can kinda guess what cards are going to show up. Idk why every legendary creature needs to have 3+ keywords nowadays but reach and indestructible on a big body is really had to attack into when it is able to block and it's not hard to manipulate counters to keep it that way.
Combine the piss lands with the black and white lands from double feature and the pokemon energy lands from beyond death and you can have a 3 color deck with basics of different colors (even though they're colorless ;D )
Mirror Mirror, I sacrifice all my lands so that you may answer my question. What do you think are the most resilient themes/commanders to build a deck around. One of the people in my play group has a deck with a strong removal engine that is hard to stop, and I usually can't keep key permanents around for that many turns, let alone long enough to win.
Mirror mirror: What are your thoughts on the cycle of Uncommon vanilla legends in Aether-drift? I’m personally a fan of the black one as I feel with evasive equipment, kill spells, and Rituals it could prove to be an effective commander damage deck.
gotta say, as a flavor fan the rankings or the Dragonstorm arc (so far) are 1: Duskmourn: House of Horror 2: Aetherdrift 3: Bloomburrow And while some of the mechanics aren't as good, there are a lot of really fun build arounds for Commander (I'm thinking of building The Speed Demon, that card is just perfect) if the modern meta slows down, I can 100% see The Aetherspark being a 1-of in creature focused decks
Mirror, Mirror, as an additional cost to besiege thee, I cast Eater of Days, as by asking the same question thrice I've skipped my last two (Besiege Question time) turns: Have you ever played a game with a custom card as your commander? If so: What did it do?
Mirror, mirror, I pay 2WW and a kicker cost of B and/or R to ask: thoughts on soft removal? Stuff like damage, -x/-x, or fighting. As cool as of a card archangel of wrath is, a terminate or path to exile just does the job, no strings attached.
Just hear me out. You equip Luxior to a Planeswalker and it becomes a creature and you equip the Aetherspark to that Planeswalker. *Insert yo dawg meme* Yo Dawg I hear you like Planeswalkers, so now you can equip a Planeswalker to your Planeswalker.
Mirror mirror i beseech thee by sacrificing three atog tokens. why couldnt they just put loots keywords onto keyword counters instead of making me track the exhaust abilities?
I "love" how Pretentious this channel is. Monarch, initiative/dungeon, max speed, city blessing, etc. Apparently any entirely new mechanics is bad and there isnt even any discussion about it since they all three have the same opinion about it.
So i've built and play tested a vnwxt deck and it can go stupid. Once it gets to max speed, you are at least drawing like 4 cards minimum a turn and are just slamming people. Which is great for me cause i stuggle to remember card draw when i build decks. It still needs a bit of tinkering but it goes ham
Mirror Mirror, I pay (3)(U/W)(U/W) to ask what is the worst deck you ever built that you didn't disassemble for way too long and what was the reason? Interpret "the worst" however you desire.
Elk's absolute memory of mtg cards that were printed 30 years ago and are in 5 different decks around the world is really fucking scary
It's because all 5 of those decks are Elk's
elk must have a photographic memory, they're too powerful
He didn't mention that many "old cards"
Granted, some of them are a few years old, but all modern border
You look through scryfall for weird deck ideas long enough, I guess you pick that kind of thing up.
You missed a great opportunity with the thumbnail to make snail into the snail from turbo
Re: District Mascot: In Welsh Lore, Fairies rode Corgi into battle. So the Saddle mechanic on it makes sense. *The More you know shooting star*
Definitely picking up a couple piss lands
Oh no, they've fallen into the preview season curse.
Elk took the words right out of my mouth. Why is The Aetherspark an artifact Planeswalker and Karn isn’t.
Karn is a person, Aetherspark is a spark in a bottle.
Well the mightstone and weakstone gave Karn the Planeswalker spark from Urza right, so they could make a mightstone and weakstone equipment Planeswalker maybe
@@yusheitslv100 Karn was also an artifact creature originally, and is now back to being an artifact with Karn, Legacy Reforged
There is a movie about this, it's called ted 2
Time to turn Necrotic Ooze into Exhausted Ooze.
Hot(?) Take: exhaust is just morph but you get the body upfront
Exhaust: maybe the creature could have gotten a -1/-1 counter on use .... that would be thematik with the name exhaust and i think amonketh had those counters ...
However i like the name and the idea of one time use abilities😊
Different than start your engines! And for mirrodin!.... I hate those names as abilities 😅

Edit: Ever since elk mentioned Blessed Respite in an episode, it's become my absolute fave. Thanks elk!!

I'm honestly glad they didn't, as tracking multiple different counters on the same permanent is logistically awful.

i mean, you can just do that if it helps you track the effects. it doesn't need to be in the rules text.
I kind of want to put the frog god in the command zone for a dumb mono-fight spell deck.
Those yellow frames look amazing!!
full throttle is basically just fork extra combat except it doesnt nonbo itself with the double untap, extremely simple and well designed
VOYAGER STAFF MENTIONED
aaahhh man, it's midnight here. i can't watch it tonight.

It's closer to Firewall Dragon or Baronne de Fleur since it's "once while face-up" rather than limited to once per duel
I am so sad that the Robot Turtle is so bad...
I've been brewing an Archer deck for ages and realized the part that really appeals to me is holding up tap abilities to ping stuff. Golden Argosy sounds like what you'd call an argonian downstairs. Thank you for that, I want to make a vehicle deck now
Mirror mirror 🪞 I want to build a graveyard 🪦 hate theme deck who would be the best Commander?
They just made a new commander that gives you a card when you exile one or more cards from a graveyard didn't they?

Aatchik goes ham with the 40k card, Biotransference.

Mirror mirror: What are your thoughts on the cycle of Uncommon vanilla legends in Aether-drift?
I’m personally a fan of the black one as I feel with evasive equipment, kill spells, and Rituals it could prove to be an effective commander damage deck.
gotta say, as a flavor fan the rankings or the Dragonstorm arc (so far) are
1: Duskmourn: House of Horror
2: Aetherdrift
3: Bloomburrow
And while some of the mechanics aren't as good, there are a lot of really fun build arounds for Commander (I'm thinking of building The Speed Demon, that card is just perfect)
if the modern meta slows down, I can 100% see The Aetherspark being a 1-of in creature focused decks

I'm excited for new Gonti :3
I've been really wanting to make a thief deck, and this one is compatible with monarchs?
hehehe
Its now officially a power play to be piss moxxing at a cEDH table
when he tutors my argosy 😩
Thats why the full arts I'd want to use are all different sets. 41:23
*points and laughs~ look at them not knowing all the cards before they release...
We need left facing snail 🐌
YESSS I wish the toolbox guys were in izzet pleaseeee wizards 😭😭
Just saying, "mirror mirror" is a huge Mandela effect. The witch doesn't say that in that movie anymore. Now she just says "magic mirror".
Anyone else sad Snail didn’t cover the new Esper cycling zombie cards from the Commander precon?
Just hear me out. You equip Luxior to a Planeswalker and it becomes a creature and you equip the Aetherspark to that Planeswalker. *Insert yo dawg meme* Yo Dawg I hear you like Planeswalkers, so now you can equip a Planeswalker to your Planeswalker.
Elk should really try out Planar Guide
36:20 He said the 'F' word!
artifact planeswalker
Mirror mirror i beseech thee by sacrificing three atog tokens. why couldnt they just put loots keywords onto keyword counters instead of making me track the exhaust abilities?
Who's throndor?
I "love" how Pretentious this channel is.
Monarch, initiative/dungeon, max speed, city blessing, etc.
Apparently any entirely new mechanics is bad and there isnt even any discussion about it since they all three have the same opinion about it.
So i've built and play tested a vnwxt deck and it can go stupid. Once it gets to max speed, you are at least drawing like 4 cards minimum a turn and are just slamming people. Which is great for me cause i stuggle to remember card draw when i build decks. It still needs a bit of tinkering but it goes ham
Why didnt they just parallel speed to exhaust other than that's basically energy... which they still use in this set. Ungh
I won't lie, I despise this set. Its very rare I don't like any of a standard set's mechanics
Mirror Mirror, I pay (3)(U/W)(U/W) to ask what is the worst deck you ever built that you didn't disassemble for way too long and what was the reason? Interpret "the worst" however you desire.
Imagine top decking the atherspark
