@@dslrvideoshooterjust a heads up, some Tiffen filters like the Black Satin have grids of bokeh artifacts that can make certain shots unusable, since they show up so prominently in bokeh orbs. Just had it ruin some client shots I did since I wasn’t aware of that issue. I called tiffen and they were like “yeah we know, other people have complained too”…

I have the Glimmerglass 1 and often film outdoors, let me tell you, the halation and the way it softens the harsh digital frame are worth every penny. It makes my footage look dreamlike and totally different to anything else out there. So much more to it than any software effect you can use.

What do you think about GG 1/2? On videos looks like it is twice less powerful than 1 and much less powerful than BPM 1/8. I consider GG 1 or GG 1/2 just for having really subtle halation. I'm just afraid 1/2 can be twin image to no filter because so far Glimmerglass line is the most subtle in Tiffen.

I can’t be the only one who isn’t a fan of Black ProMist filters. I get when they’re used with a purpose, but way too many people here on UA-cam use them 24/7 and never take them off their lenses.
When I see videos with very low contrast and extreme highlight blooming I can tell right away they just slapped on a BPM filter because everyone else is doing it
This Smoque filter is quite interesting though and if used purposefully I think you can get amazing footage with it

Fabulous results! But why use expensive filters if the same effects can be achieved in post? One exception is that the out of frame light sources affect filters, but they can't affect anything in post. This is the only big difference that comes to mind. Am I missing something?

I think the main reason is to speed up the process. You can do it in post but if you know you want this kind of effect it's more efficient to have it straight out of the camera

Wait. Can't this be done in post? Not sure I would want this look baked into my footage but I'm sure it works for some.

Objectively speaking, what is the advantage of doing this on camera rather than in post?

The strength of these filters always has to be linked to the sharpness of your lens at a given aperture. @ F1.4 to F2.8 a 1/8th strength Promist might be suitable. But at F5.6 to F11 where many lenses can become extremely sharp a 1/4th Promist might be more suitable.

Also the focal length has a massive impact. I used to run a 1/4 pro mist and the effects increased a lot on high focal lengths like 80+mm
