In this video I’ll break down the UA-cam-gear inferiority complex, what actually matters when looking for new gear, and my personal philosophy when it comes to investing in new equipment.

I really hate the "I'm trading my fx3 for an a6700" followed by "of course I still have an fx6, an fx9, Red Komodo, etc. for work"
lol I can think of 2 UA-camrs right away who do this about once a quarter…
the "I'm switching X for Y" genre is so clickbaity and dumb. LMAOO
@@zongmuas I don't think it's dumb. It should be just a bit more nuanced and be focused more on the personal journey instead of purely technical arguments.
I think the biggest reason behind a lot of the gear content is the majority of these UA-camrs don’t actually shoot as a cam op/dp/prod company anymore, so their main source of income is content. So staying relevant with the newest gear, affiliate marketing is essential for their income. There are exceptions to this ofc, but as a wide observation.

You’re on point with this observation. It’s so obvious. I mean to be fair to them, a lot of them are wedding or commercial videographers where the details of gear actually kinda matter. In creative narrative work, it’s more Freeform and subjective to achieve certain look rather than the level of specs. I had someone argue with me that APSC 4k 60p is not good enough for “professional use” while ignoring that a large portion of movies were shot in super35 which is basically APSC. He also said he was a MFT user only. So idk where he was coming from
making youtube also pays better for some than doing filmmaking for clients. atleast for some ppl.

THANK YOU. I'm sick of all of them. So many young people coming up in the industry are mistaking YT gear shillers for actual professional DPs and it is seriously poisoning the well so to speak.
It’s funny cuz us older people are totally fine with using something older for as long as possible while the younger kids are spending all their money on gear with no finically smart decisions in site. It’s all about the views for them, nothing more.

Yeah, I saw a while back some moustached guy with a cross earring proclaiming about how this piece of grip gear is an absolute game changer, checked other reviews and it was literally garbage.

There's a limit though - there was a whole era of people saying that you should be making films on your phone. And yeah - the look of those phone filmed movies bums me out, and I think that the only people that had success with films made on their phones were people that were well established enough already to make it feel like a feature rather than a bug.

@@meadow9 I am saying that there are films that would have benefited from not being shot on a phone, because they were a bummer to look at, and that the only reason why "High Flying Bird" and other Soderberg experiments were tolerated was because it was curio - if someone else had made films that looked weird in that way people would have been turned off and they wouldn't have had successful festival runs.
Being an established name, and having people in your movie are major drivers to whether a film gets any kind of attention or distribution - quality matters to a degree but it isn't the only factor. Most people making a movie on a phone would get dismissed on the spot by a huge contingent of the audience.

Not UA-cam related - but in the same vein... Back in the mid 90s I was line producing TV commercials here in Toronto, and had a chance to work with an 'up and coming' director. His reel was amazing, seat of the pants film making, and I had worked with him earlier on one of his short films. He was the kind of person who turned lack of gear into an asset.
But on that first big gig, with all the gear and props, crew that he had always dreamed of - total sh!tshow. couldn't decide on anything because the choices were seemingly infinite.
I also used to work with a Car shooter dp /director, who would come to town and always requested the 'Directors Finder Kit' from WFW. It was a road case with mismatched, scratched, and cracked B-Speeds that were only good for location scouts. But this guy shot (for the time) some of the most amazing car commercials with them. So yeah gear matters, but it's really about choosing the right gear for the gig, and not being overwhelmed.
here on UA-cam I let myself be influenced and sold my lumix S1 for the Sony FX3, over time I realized that I didn't need almost any of the specifications of the FX3, I don't need the dual ISO, the AF or the 120 Fps in 4k and I ended up selling it and went back to the lumix s1 again

@@FranciscoRamirezAraya Luckily the Lumix s1 costs less than 1000 dollars at the moment, I was able to sell the FX3 and buy few lenses! :)
So you had a good camera, got influenced to buy a better camera, and then spent more money to switch back to a technically lesser camera rather than growing into the new better one? K.
I did the same thing. I sold my S5 and got an A7Siii. I didn't like it so I sold it and got an S5 ii. Sometimes the camera with better specs isn't the best camera for someone

Great video. I'm so sick of these UA-cam "filmmakers" who only do PTC videos plugging the latest gear. Quite often they have almost no experience in the industry and nothing on their resumes. Usually just reading out a list of tech specs in their impeccably-designed "studios" and not actually using the gear in a professional environment. There's even a couple who have online "film schools", I mean - what on earth are they teaching???
They teach what film schools teach to 80% of their students.

no one ever asked me about the gear I use. But it is a joy to use gear which I know very well.
I completely agree. One reason I'm not a fan of "I'm switching to" or "I'm dropping..." type videos is that the creator is suggesting that there are things wrong with the product they're switching from or leaving. For one, we don't even know if they are actually knowledgeable about the product they're using in the first place.
Did they read the manual? Did they use the camera/product to its fullest capability? Do they even know what they're talking about? There are only a handful of creators that I will even consider basing my purchase decisions on their advice and experience. I could go on. But, you already did a great job of tackling the topic.

I feel like part of it is that there really WAS an explosion of appreciable and meaningful camera quality 15 years ago that continued through the mid 2010s. But at a certain point it got good enough. Like I look at 28 Days Later shot with an expensive DV cam and think "yeah I'm really glad most stuff isn't shot with this", but I look at Frances Ha shot one of the later 5Ds and think "Yeah this holds up".
It was worth caring about the difference between a 5D and a consumer video camera - but it isn't really worth caring about the difference between an Komodo and BMPCC, or whatever - at least in terms of image quality.
In the last few years though pretty much all cameras seem to me to be pretty capable of delivering a decent image. There's diminishing returns - in the same way that Standard Def really was noticeably different that HD, but 4K and HD aren't SO meaningfully different and the difference between 4k and 8k is only going to matter to a tiny tiny group of people.
Good thoughts. Gear isn't what holds me back, it's fear and lack of trying. I didn't have a camera when I started telling stories and had to borrow them. I still use the GH5, my last upgrades were to build my first rig and move from photo to cine lenses. My next purchase will probably be to replace my audio recorder as the power button is starting to go bad.
Great little camera, I had GH3 and a GH4R, R being the European unlimited record time. I part exed them with lenses for my S1H, GH5 more than capable of creating lush images.
One of the biggest benefits of going through the ranks of a cam assist -> cam op -> DP type of thing is getting to see what people with more experience are actually using and what works or doesn’t using their gear.
Slowly figure out what’s worth investing in and timing those investments for when you see a need that can be filled or are 100% confident you can use it!
MarkusPix talks on and on about gear (and technique). But he ALWAYS stresses low-cost effective gear, often available used. If he sees a $40 light that performs like a $200 one, he gets VERY excited.

when you say that the accumulation of the gear based on getting it for free from companies "doesn't improve your work at all" is a powerful statement. You say "But I digress", but honestly I thought that really comes to the crux of the whole matter! You're a professional (obviously) who owns his own gear and yet you're admitting how the free stuff you've gotten from being on youtube is really just cluttering your house and not improving your work.

So glad I found your channel. You're one of my favorite (real) filmmaker / youtube content creators. You don't buy into the gear content trends just for views and you actually try to give us a realistic perspective on what it takes to be (and stay) a filmmaker. When I'm working on a feature length documentary or planning my next one, your channel offers some of the most applicable insights. Though I do still watch all the gear videos out there because at least they are informative if I'm looking for demos on certain camera specs that are hard to visualize just by looking at a list of specs. But it's refreshing to get your no BS insights that come from experience.
This is also a problem in the music scene on UA-cam. Everyone rushes out to buy the newest thing instead of using what they have in creative ways. Gear ABSOLUTELY matters, but only insofar that you got good enough gear to work well with.
I love gear and nerding out about different things, but you don't NEED to constantly buy new stuff and switch to something new. I JUST got a new camera after using my GH5s since 2017, and I'm still using that GH5s as well. Just because new stuff comes out doesn't mean that good gear is no longer good.
And I want to be clear that the reason I GOT the camera is so I could handle stills at concerts better, because the GH5s is a video camera, not a stills camera.

When i started with photography a long, long time ago, I was always looking to upgrade my camera. My mentor used to say: I will let you know when the camera is the problem. 😊
"Buy less but buy better"!!! Yes!!! So well said Luc. Brands, especially camera brands perpetuate this idea that we need to upgrade our cameras every year as if they're smartphones. Totally not the case. Keep making amazing vids brother. Love them.

Videos mit Inhalten zu finden, die einen entweder weiterbringen oder gut Unterhalten ohne einen großen Werbeanteil, sind oft schwer zu finden. Ich muss aber sagen genau diese Kanäle schaue ich dann immer wieder und lasse mich unterhalten und Weiterbilden. Inzwischen schaue ich genau hin ob ein neues Video nur zum Zuschauer fangen und Quoten aufbauen nach den neusten Vorschlägen der UA-cam Gurus aufgebaut ist oder aber ein ehrliches und toll produziertes Video ist, was nicht nur auf Zuschauer Quoten produziert wurde. Deine Videos gehören auf jeden Fall zu den Videos die es wert sind anzuschauen.
Besides content creators, us smaller filmmakers I think have this lack of understanding what is missing in our videos. At least I know that I do. And everytime I see a new shiny crumb of tech I hope that maybe that it fills the missing void. I would love to get some guidance from somewhere, but until that happens or until I get good by myself I will always have that strong reaction towards new tech, even though lately I've been better at resisting

Luc…. I absolutely love your videos! I’m 3 years into my video business. I do it part time until I retire from the FAA as an inspector. I’m eligible May 2026, so we shall see. Your advice is very sound and at age 66, not sure I’ll ever get to your level… but that is ok… I love the fact I’m able to do what I’m doing now… and that is finding my niche. I plan on keeping my business as long as I’m sucking air! Lol. Again, thanks for all you do!
I've heard a fully loaded camera bag, referred to as "a bag of self doubts!" I started carrying a much smaller camera bag with only essentials after this realization.

I agree, that's why I still shoot with a used 5D mark ii with used lenses and a used fx30 w/kit lenses. It works for me.
I've learned my lesson too many times on buying more gear. Lenses, cameras, equipment, etc.
Awesome thoughts. I still use a C100 mkII, its 10 years old. I deliver everything in 1080p, so no need on changing. And its an amazing cinema camera, beautiful image.
Most film makers don't have time to actually explain how or why their equipment really WORKS for them (and that's why Luc's channel is so useful!) but one thing I have learned after 40 years of photography (and now videography) is that GLASS is forever. Think about what you want to shoot and why - and the lenses you need for that. Like how important is autofocus to you? How important is stabilization? As a sports-doc shooter...those are kind of important to ME. How important is it to you to have bona fide cinema lenses? It will streamline decision making to base some of your camera gear decisions on your lens system needs. Oh, by the way, switching to a different lens system is really really expensive...I think I buried the lead there.

The difference is that this guy is a true documentary filmmaker and buys what he really needs. Hope he doesn't change much when companies start knocking his door to review their gear though, which still can be manageable while keeping his integrity.

Great point. I currently need 2 seperate cameras for my channel, and I just simply cannot afford anything more than my A6700 + ZV E10 combo. (planning to upgrade the ZV E10 to FX30 soon) Whenever I'm tempted to get a newer, fancier, or FF camera, I always ask myself : "is it a me problem, or a gear problem when it comes to my video quality?" and always come to the conclusion that it's a me problem.

This was fantastic and gives me some validity in what I do. I've been shooting real estate since 2020, and have been using the same Blackmagic pocket 4k since then - I've had some other videographers in the space ask me why I'm still using it, which I simply reply that it's just a solid camera, and I'm going to use it until it won't work anymore.
Thank you for telling it how it is! I have an FX30 with 1 set of Nightwalker cinema lenses (purchased both on deep discount during sales). I purchased a few Nanlite lights (from their open box section based on your suggestions to look for deals), and find the constant "I'm getting this new better more expensive thing" videos to be irritating. I personally stopped watching a few of the creators I used to watch because their channels going in that direction. I appreciate your content and the great info you always provide!🙏🙏

Hey Luc - Another video that needed to be made. I literally went into this current doc with a list of stuff I thought I would need. I have been using my fully rigged out EOS R6 since 2021 on my last Doc and I wouldn't trade it for the world . Hooked up to a Brick and a Ninja V and I can shoot pro-res all day. So looking at this current doc I thought about the usual stuff - sliders, drones, etc (what every video on here is about) but what I really needed - much less sexy was an actual B-Cam to replace my iPhone B-Cam. Now being self funded I knew I had to be frugal but it needed to match the R6. So off to Adorama and I picked up a used EOS RP and with the 50mm and another Ninja V I literally just upped my game on this doc. Other toys would have been sexier (gimbals, steady cams) but having a two camera shoot when you are a one man band is , and I hate this term, a game changer. Get what you need and hold on to what works. Thanks once again for speaking about what is usually in my head. Cheers - C

I use Canon C70's and an R5c. My simple math. A new camera would need to have a far better image, way more DR, and stronger AF for me to even entertain the idea of a new camera. I am pretty invested in RF glass. I'm happy with what I have. I only follow gear guru's to be aware of what's out there. Like I said, the image would have to be night and day for a switch. Nuance improvements are not gonna cut it. Great work bud.

Same for me Panny S1H user. Great camera for my needs. But my change will be for larger DR, global shutter and 12 up to 16bit 422 or444 Mov files, I don't need RAW.
I'm really starting to get into sport videography (baseball right now) and I have a Sony A7IV. I was trying to stick with 4k60 for slo-mo shots but found 60 isn't slow enough so I gritted my teeth and started shooting 1080p 8-bit 120FPS and you know what.... it looks great. I'm getting tons of views on my Reels and Posts and people asking what camera setup i'm using. So while my A7iv has its purposes, I really don't need what I have.
This video can save countless hours for filmmakers that are not sure of what they need and are just following trends!

I shoot on a Sony F55 and I LOOOOOVE it. Way better than anything I was expecting and I got it at an amazing price.
Great video again! I always say if you can't explain why your gear is holding you back without convincing yourself with watching videos, it's most likely not a gear problem.
I love gear... now, i am writer/director but, i like having access to gear to do a quick project or a bigger project. I work with one DP for the most part and he is skilled. I have always gotten a piece of equipment for a shot or an entire project but, I may have reached the end of the rainbow for gear.

I've been shooting with the Canon R6 for 3 years now, and feel like I'm finally mastering how to shoot for my style and color grade. I don't like that it only has 12 stops of DR compared to the C70 at 17, or the FX3 with 15 and amazing low light capability. But I don't have the money to upgrade, and I need to figure out now how to make money with what I have. Also, audio is so much more important than having the best camera.
R6 is so good, love mine... NR in resolve helps with dynamic range on those rare times when digging into shadows. Also the R6 has the same dynamic range up to ISO 12800 and not much noise up to that point, so pretty incredible in low light.
A very astute take on this issue.
I bought a Lumix S1H after it had been out a couple of years. Coming back into hobbyist videography after dabling in filmmaking in the early 2000s. I thought, I can afford to buy the best mirrorless camera for my needs. I joined an amateur filmmakers club. I bought some second hand LED lights a Zoom H6 audio recorder with a sennheiser MKH 600 and an atomos Ninja V monitor/recorder.
Plus the various bits and pieces you need to carry out your task.
Now I am learning all I can by using said camera. It was camcorders like Sonys PD150s in my day. So using mirrorless/dslrs is a massive learning curve for me, frustrating and fun. But luckily in the club, I have other people to ask for advice. Now I am in the start of filming a feature, the scriptwriter asked me to take on the camera work and edit it. Now I am director, sound designer, vfx work and create deliverables for festivals.
I have decided no new gear as the gear I have is all I need to create good work. If it is not good, then that is down to me.
My gear buying decisions: what am I renting constantly? Can I buy it? Will it make a return, make my life easier, improve production quality? Then sometimes: I neeeeed this obscure thing that I’ll probably use once.

So well said. I recently did a test shooting for a real estate video with my tiny Sony RX100VII on my old Gimbal Weebill S and an old Sennheiser Mic.
Guess what: most of the footage turned out to be so good that we will take it for the final video - I only need to re-shoot two scenes with a different full frame camera for the advantage of its 16mm lens.

Its true using Sony Alpha 11 coming from using a cell phone and its hard I'm a great cabinet maker but not a videographer.My Last shoot was over exposed but I know what I did wrong but I'm spending the time in post-production.I was thinking I need a new camera I will be better and look like those other videos on UA-cam. But your right get good with what I have .Good subject thanks

I just bought a sony a7iv for documentary filmmaking... And althought I am very glad with the image quality, I have been experiencing a little bit of overheating (not in real scenarios but in tests I have done)
So: As I want to have the same camera for maybe 5 to 10 years as you suggested I am wondering if maybe I should sell it now (cause it is as new and it could preserve it's value better) and buy a camera that I know will stand in every environment I could possibly be shooting the next years...

I just picked up the f55, and BOY IS IT GOOD! I've only used it on one project, and a bunch of tinkering, but it's got me so inspired, the image is great, and the price was $2500 for EVERYTHING (except the raw recorder). I plan to get one of them in the future, but not until I can buy it cash, and (more importantly) I've got a project that wants it. I can always rent it from lens rentals in the meantime, if I really need to / want to.
and the number one video camera I recommend to people is the fs7, or the a7iii to people who want to get into both photography and video. Both can be had for about $1k nowadays, which may be high for some, but I think that's the sweet spot of affordability and performance right now. I'll mention other brands as well, but I know I can offer tech support on these cameras if they need it, and consequently they're my #1 recommendation.

I found it to be the best analogy, if you tell a good story, you can tell it at a camp fire. You don`t have to have those people sitting in a theater. But yes, gear does matter. Because pro gear just works. You have time to focus on story and other aspects of storytelling. not problem solving problems caused by diy-gear.

The real problem is this: UA-cam is built on ads and selling an audience somethng. Creators want to cash in, so in the world of filmmaking they have to sell camera gear. This trend will continue until someone discovers something else they can profitably sell.

Hey Luc! I've been following you for quite a long time so I've heard you talking about buying used cameras before. I am looking forward to buying my first camera and I do consider looking for a used one if it will fit my needs, but something in me is sceptical as I can't know the conditions of the product and I won't have warranty for the camera. Do you have some tips regarding buying second hand?
Good question! I wish I had a 100% answer here, but the used world has some inherent risks. I’ve personally never had an issue buying used gear, including all my cameras and most of my lenses, but maybe i’v just been lucky. Some big retailers like B&H and Adorama have certified used departments and that can help protect you because they can vouch for the products, but with eBay or Facebook marketplace there is always going to be an element of risk. Try to get your hands on the gear before you send the money, or at least confirm via video call that everything works. It’s pretty unlikely a camera is going to turn on and work fine, and then die an hour later, but of course there are no guarantees. Like I said it’s always worked out for me though!
Buying kit in New Zealand is difficult because you often can't get your hands on the physical kit before you buy it. I bought a Sony FX30 after watching Phillip Bloom's youtube review/rant and it's been fantastic. Paid itself off in 3 months. The mistake I made was listening to the youtube hype around the Tamron 17-70 f2.8. Everyone said it was great... and I found it nothing but disappointing. So much so I thought I'd made a big mistake buying the FX30.
Then I talked to some other camerapeople and bought a used Sigma 18-35 f1.8 with 7Artisans adapter. What a difference... 10 year old lens kicking ass for about half of what the Tamron had cost. If the youtubers had been a bit more critical with their reviews and highlighted its flaws I might still have bought the 17-70 for the range it provides but I wouldn't have been expecting unrealistic performance.

I just ordered an XF605 for an upcoming project because the FX6 and FX3 that were a major jump from my previous cameras that I got by with are interestingly enough not ideal for the job at hand!
I'm not switching from Sony, no way, I'm just adding a different hammer to the tool box. On this fishing adventure project I've been finding myself wanting an all in one camcorder, like the XF100 I used and made a ton of money with 10 years ago, rather than the FX6, and today I went for it!
Of course the irony is I'll probably shoot 1080 most of the time with it, like I do with my Sonys, and could have totally gotten a used XF205 for the task, but I figured the AF on the XF605 would be a bit better, and having 4K would come in handy too. The camera will pay for itself pretty quickly, so it's all good!
The great thing is that because I know the FS7 and FS5 are still in operation all these years later, I'm sure the FX3, FX6, and now XF605 cameras will likely last me the next 5-10 years or so before I would even consider an upgrade. Broadcast hasn't really caught up to 4K yet anyway, so we've hit a pretty sweet spot for owning cameras today! For what I do, I couldn't even fathom needing 6K or 8K. All I'd be interested in future models of these cameras would be better shutter, better sensitivity, better audio inputs (looking at you FX6), and VND on the Canon.
The reasons I chose the XF605 over the Z90 or Z190 was that the XF605 still has the InfraRed feature, which I still want to use sometimes, plus the touch focus (not on Sony) and 4K10 bit if I need it. Was hoping to see a Sony update to their camcorder lineup at NAB that would have given us an S-Cinetone camcorder to make color matching a little easier, but crickets.
Looking forward to camcorder life again!

Gear inferiority complex is part of GAS, you always feel the thought "oh if i had that one then i could do such and such a thing" i had it with guitars.. kind of have it with video cameras (sometimes it can get bad) BUT I'm a recovering Gas addict so am alot more sensible with it these days. If the moneys not there, just stop yourself it can always wait! Be happy with what you have and make a little plan to build gradually. You'll find everything you buy will be used well because you've thought it through properly
I have had a GH4 since 2015. Does everything I need it to do for work and when i need 422 pro res i just use an external recorder
