    HEY!
    Happy Birthday to Ian Anderson who was born on this date in 1947.
    While it probably needs no introduction, this is the title track off of the “Aqualung” album by “Jethro Tull” which came out in 1971 and featured Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond on bass…or Glenn Cornick even.
    I’m playing the early 80’s Guild SB-202 that I had fitted with a Babicz 3 Point Bridge. I’m using just the bridge pick-up and had the tone rolled back a bit.
    I’m really a bit fond of my original Aqualung cover. I think the mix was pretty good, considering the way I was recording back then - a small amp, computer speakers, and a desktop microphone. It’s a bit strange to see it and reflect back upon the time it was recorded, as I was around 3-4 weeks into radiation treatments for throat cancer. That’s why the lower half of my face and down my neck is a bright red. I don’t think I was very physically uncomfortable at this point, but the real pain was not far off. It was a pretty stressful time as well as it was preceded by months of doctors appointments, scans, procedures, a surgery, more scans, and culminated if a leave of absence from work. Probably what I like most about the video is how our favorite cat of all-time paid me a visit at the end. I don’t do it as often these days, but I used look up the video and go to the end just to see him. Lynn and I have six cats and love them all, even the ones with severe personality disorders (which is most of them). And we’ve loved the ones we’ve lost over the years as well, but Mr. Butter was truly something special and we were blessed to have had him for the time we did. Everybody loved Butter. If you’re interested, the link to my original Aqualung cover (and Mr. Butter) is below -

    I saw this upload and I'm like, what? Didn't he upload this before? Man I remember back in high school when I watched you post the original Aqualung cover back in 2011. Seeing Mr. Butter at the end of the video I thought it was a cool touch at the end. I would've never imagined at the time you were going through such a horrible thing like throat cancer. I hope you've beaten that horrible cancer and even if you're fighting it now; I truly wish you nothing but the best.
    Seeing this reupload with better camera and audio quality, I think all of us long time followers would love to see you possibly do newer covers of songs you've already done; just food for thought. Seeing you look at the camera and do the "Hey!" again made me happy; I remember loving that part of the video. Hope you have an incredible one!

    That guitar solo section is one of the great moments in prog rock history, the interaction between the walking bass and the guitar. Kind of a preview of what Geddy and Alex would bring us a few years later. What's that weird beep at 5:33, though? I thought it was my doorbell at first, until I ran the video back over it to check.

    So I just received my new custom IEM's. Ironically I was talking with someone today about my "Vinyl Weekends" when my wife goes out of town and I break out all my old vinyl for a love fest. He asked what is the first tune you play and I replied always Aqualung. Anyway I searched for Aqualung on UA-cam to tryout my new IEM's and I figured pick one with some bass. I have to admit, your rendition was stellar!!!! I honestly could not stop smiling. I got so wrapped up in your playing, I even forgot to critique my new investment. VERY well done!

    Seriously these videos are some of the most impressive bass playing I've ever heard. Your tone out of these Guild basses is so perfect that it inspired me to buy an SB-202 like yours. Now if only I had the talent to go with it! Lol. The middle section of Aqualung with the walking bass is MY favorite tone ever. My SB-202 will be candy apple red. And I'm going to have a black abalone pickguard made for it. And it already has the Babicz bridge upgrade.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  4 роки тому

      Thank you very much for the very kind words.
      Congratulation on the Guild. I prefer the sound using the only the bridge p/u, if that's any help. I found that the output and tone really suffered when both p/u's are selected.
      I've had a couple of pick guards made by "PickguardPlanet". They have all the oddball templates and they do nice work, though the ordering process is a bit cumbersome.
      Good on the Babicz upgrade. I've done it too all of my Guilds.

    Ahh Aqualung, such a classic. Always had a soft spot for this album and song. Love the bass line too. I never noticed just how good that basses tone is. Can be bright if you attack it like you do during the louder parts, but so bassy and warm during the slower parts. Very dynamic instrument, sounds beautiful. Well played as per usual! Always the kick in the butt for me to go play I need some days.
    Didn't know you were going through cancer in the older video. Hope it's all squared away and you're feeling better! That sounded horrible from what you typed out.

    What a "purty" guitar that is. I used to play around with this back when.... But of course what I played wasn't even 1/10th of what you are laying down. I really need to start playing again. Been a few years since I've had my G&L L-1000 out of the case. Same holds true for my Fender acoustic. Someday I'll see the error in my ways. Thanks for sharing your videos with all of us!

    Great playing! Hope you're doing well, sounds like a whole lotta no fun. We also have many cats we love dearly. One, an ill tempered female named...Butters. We rescued her from certain death. Mother abandoned her at about 3 weeks in 100+ degree heat. She was in our planter box crying. My wife scooped her up and put her on my lap as I sat in my chair. We stared at each other for about 5 seconds before she hissed at me! Been in love with her ever since. She hates us most of the time, but we love her all the same! 🤘😎🤘

Glad to see the classics never die!!! (RIP Mr. Butter,we miss you buddy!!!) Sometimes...........2011 seems so short of a time ago............(that's when my only child was born! Just turned 7 in June! ) Yet,other times,it seems so VERY LONG AGO!!! I guess............depending on the actual "Memory",and the meaning and/or relevance of that time,depends on whether it seems a distant time,or a time that just happened!?!? Lol. Anyway..........the "sound" of this updated version,sure improves things,but You played this one just as well NOW,as You did then My Friend!!! Excellent Job!!! :)

    Just seeing this. You did this before. (But this has better sound). This is perfect example of a precisely orchestrated bass part and you got it all! The placement of the harmonies, the varying walking lines that are mostly arpeggios with displaced rhythms and logical voice leading -- it's all almost too perfect not to be worked out beforehand. This had to be a tough one to figure out. There seems to be some discrepancy as to who played bass on the original. Glen Cornick claims he did, but Jeffry Hammond is credited and it seems more his style. Hammond was an interesting talent -- mainly a painter (and a very good one) who supposedly played "hobby bass" but Anderson preferred his personality to Cornicks so, Glen was out, Jeffry was in. (!!!) And man, talk about rising to the occasion! I wonder if all of his parts were written by Anderson and he just executed them to a tee. But perhaps Hammond just had that clean structured approach. His style seems "neater" then Cornick's. (whose playing I love by the way). Anyway, your take inspired me to go back and work out some of those parts. Well done as usual!

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  Рік тому +1

      Thank you Nelson. To me, it sounds more like Cornick than Hammond. I thought that Hammond’s sound and style was more similar to Glascock’s.

    • @NelsonMontana1234
      @NelsonMontana1234 Рік тому +1

      @@TJH3113 The "later day" Tull bass parts did seem extremely tight and well rehearsed. The "walking lines" in Aqualung are very Cornick-esque. I wouldn't be surprised if Anderson didn't give him album credit out of spite. There seemed to be some unfortunate resentment there. At any rate, great job, and now I'm going to check out your Glascock covers. : )

    Nice! I see you are using B after G, for instance on walking bass formula start. Isn't that Bb? (sounds like the chord is Gm)

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  5 років тому +1

      Thanks. I agonized over this for years. I would always play the Bb because the guitar was obviously playing a Gm, but something about it never sounded right. When I did my first cover of this song, I referenced an isolated bass track and discovered that he is actually playing a major scale over a minor chord. The bass is pretty murky sounding, so it doesn't really stand out.

I got back from holiday in the US a few days and thought of you as I was flying over New York on the way back to the UK. A slightly different route to the one I was expecting thanks to the storms on the east coast and Delta cancelling my flight from DC. It’s all part of the adventure. Keep up the great work.

    I know Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond is the Tull bassist on this album - but what is the likelihood that he is not responsible for this bass part? it seems very Glenn Cornick to me - and Cornick was still in Tull when the majority of the Aqualung songs were being written. I'm not busting on JHH - but I never got the feeling that he was a musician's musician. My understanding is he got the Tull gig cos he was friends w/IA. And, considering the records that would follow (TAAB, PP, etc.) became more and more musically complex, it seems unlikely to me that JHH was the bassist for anything but the live performances during his tenure in the band. Again, I mean no offense to JHH or the JHH fans out there - I think he brought a very necessary sense of humor to the Tull thing when he came along. And, no one would be happier than me to know that my take on this is way off the mark. Any insights here?

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  4 роки тому +1

      That's exactly what I've always thought. This sounds nothing like Hammond's style or sound to me. If they kicked Cornick to the curb as abruptly as they did, it would not surprise me that they'd cut him out of the credits. I'm not a Tull expert, but I always got the impression that Ian Anderson was as much a shrewd businessman as he was a brilliant musician and he made some pretty draconian decisions as the leader of Tull. Cutting Barr out of the band being the most egregious.
