    At the end of the day I use both. The only thing I don't really touch is barbell. If I'm not feeling like I'm strong to use dumbbells that day, or I'm tired or whatever the reason, I'll work with machines.
    It's pretty simple, do the exercises that you enjoy doing. No need to complicate it and turn it into a big debate

    • @danzena4059
      @danzena4059 Рік тому +3

      I 1000% agree. I think things are becoming overly complicated in the fitness community. "DO THIS! NOT THAT!" "WHY DOING THIS AND NOT THAT IS RUINING YOUR GAINS!"
      C'mon. I've used barbells and dumbbells, kettlebells, sandbags, calisthenics. Guess what? THEY ALL WORK and helped me in my growth in one way or another.

    • @Toshi8305
      @Toshi8305 Рік тому +3

      Agreed. Accumulated all my injuries using barbells, even with good form. Years of back squatting WILL fuck up your neck and spine (C6-T2 region). Years of deadlifting way too heavy at 2x+ bodyweight WILL stretch out your neck and trap ligaments beyond repair. Years of doing weighted dips and over focus on pressing movements WILL eventually cause some type of shoulder impingement and pop. After 3 MRIs and 40 years old now, I use nothing less than 6 reps, nothing more than 20 reps. DB and Cables only, feels good.

      @@danzena4059 exactly! During the first lockdown here in Australia, I trained using resistance tubes, bands and bodyweight exercises. I held onto most of my size and strength over 3 months from the gym.
      Muscles don't care which you use. They only know tension and stress. My buddy built his legs during lockdowns while squatting with two huge steel barrels filled with water. He drilled holes in them and attached the bar to the barrels. The man built his squat up better then he ever did in the gym.

    • @danzena4059
      @danzena4059 Рік тому +2

      @@intensity.density2208 Oh yeah! I remember before I got into barbell squatting I used my own bodyweight doing various different squats and hill sprints. Yes, lots and lots of reps but legs were big, strong, chiseled. Then I added these rusty kettlebells my neighbor didn't want which was given to me and those added to my leg and overall body development. I didn't have anything fancy.
      Then I finally went to an actual gym with all the nooks and crannies, got into strongman. And yeah, that was a level up for sure.
      However, I know I'm good without a gym and I'm good with using pretty much any equipment that's available. It's all what you make out of it and how creative you can get with it.

    • @Justin-bass
      @Justin-bass Рік тому +1

      I only use machines especially in the last 2 years of my training as I got into my 30s but I go heavy and really focus on mind to muscle connection. Than one day I started working out my coworker and I was doing 90 pound dumbbell rows 12 reps with very good form. While my roommate who usually works out with free weights was using 110. I could have done 100 but my point is you can get pretty strong with machines and the best part is you’re less likely to get injured. Just do what you feel and don’t worry about the next person.

    It totally makes logical sense. People aren’t walking to work or taking a horse to their office job, they’re driving in air conditioned/heated, very comfortable cars. The times are changing everywhere, so why not apply the same thing to bodybuilding? Yes free weights have their place in athleticism, rehab, etc., but if you have fantastic machines at your disposal, why not use them?

  • @Mexicanowhupazz
    @Mexicanowhupazz Рік тому +3

    I do almost 90% selectorized resistance machines (the ones where you can quickly take the pin in and out of the stack) in order to perform double drop sets on every set. It cuts your time in the gym by over 50%. It's really humbling to do double drop sets on a chest press machine going down to 50 lbs on the last drop feels like your trying to lift 200 lbs. Machines that have a diverging/converging path are a huge plus and then another plus if the machine has unilateral action (you can alternate the pull/press with each arm). A diverging lat pull down machine hits the lats so much harder than the old school lat pull down bars or dumbbell rows and your lats engage hard as fuck when you're smoked and switch to unilateral reps and pull that handle all the way down like you're trying to dig into your hip. You can potentially perform drop sets with dumbbells by setting up 3 sets of dumbbells with decreasing weight but you look like a huge asshole taking up 3 pairs of dumbbells off the rack just for yourself.
    Anyone reading this that wants to open a portal to hell and dip waist deep inside it . . . do nothing but double drop sets on a selectorized leg press machine. You'll want to immediately decrease the weight after every set and your heart will be trying to jump out of your chest.

    I agree with Mike’s principle. Machines attempt to optimise a movement to illicit best growth from a particular muscle. But, in my own personal experience a full concentration on using machines gives a look that looks weird, unnatural. I think it is because it misses key points (spinal erectors, forearms, core to some extent). I still think there is a value in combining free weights and machines.

      I would agree that some modern day machine only physiques do not look natural. Everyone from the golden era was balanced because everything was always working in conjunction so nothing could grow unproportionally. Now to bring up a lagging body part, a machine would be ideal-it puts all the emphasis on the target muscle.
      That being said once the foundations is built machines are a godsend once you get older and beat up.

    real growth is in compound movements , dumbbells are just for adding volume to training. my personal experience is that i grew my overall body with compound lifts like rowing. benching. deadlifting. and for legs i do leg press . because when i was doing squats .i was tired after just 2 sets. barbell squats are too much load on nervous system. i was burnt out by squats so i turned to leg press and never looked back. my leg development is good. and also very little chance or getting yourself injured in leg press. my lower back is thanking me since i left squats. and for chest gains incline barbell press and for back t.bar rowing with landmine. for triceps i do closegrip bench. and for shoulders over head press with barbell. behind the neck press. and i only use dumbbells for lateral raises. over all growth is good.

    I am 59, been training for over 45 yrs, trained in Gold's gym Venice for over 20. I haven't used barbell bench or any dumbbell presses in yrs should especially are really healthy. I use hammer and nautilus and free motion machines. Dorian used machines, lat oullover, lat iso pulldowns, hammer bench, legs nothing but. Dexter longevity because as he got older he incorporated machines, that I know because I watched him train with Charles Glass. It's smarter especially as we get older. You lose integrity of lift and form there goes most likely a shoulder or something else. The object is to stay healthy with no injury breaks to keep growing.

    People will ditch the dumbbells but then replace them with some other asinine trendy tiktok bullshit and continue to ignore the excellent equipment around them that’s tailor-made to help them achieve their goals. Apparently everyone’s smarter than the companies that have dedicated years and thousands of dollars to developing these machines.

      I've had this discussion with internet randoms so many times, I'm just done. Even Larry Wheels have said on multiple occasions that machines are the best way to build muscle. Most people doesn't seem to understand the difference between strength and build training. In my country, there is no gym that has hypertrophy as an option when they ask you how you train. If you lift a weight, it's all called strength training, even doctors only talk about strength training.
      Once i ditched bench presses, squats, seated rows and what not, many years ago, and started to focus on isolation training on cables and in machines, i started to grow fast. So i actually grow a lot faster now in my mid 40's that i ever did in my mid 20's.

    Couple of issues, one theres nothing wrong with good old fashion dumbbells! They are not obsolete ever gym in the world has them! They get the job if you know who to properly use them. Not everyone had cables in a home gym.
    Second dumbbells have built some dam great physique’ s over the years. Don’t tell me you didn’t use them. I will continue to use them.
    Your shoulder issues are your issues. I have no shoulder issue and I’m 70. I’ve lifted on and off since 1968. Dumbbells will never go out of style, just sayin!
