When Tyrannosaurus Traps came on I was already under the table 🤣
Oh man that was the best yet! 😄
Under the table ':/ whatcha doin under there
I totally want them!! 😂😂 they can keep their arms though lol
@@trevorhaeberle4688 ya I'm trying to them Brontosaurus biceps! 💪🦕

Love the golf analogy, reminds me what Fred Flintstone would use. Barbells were an absolute miracle technology for strength training...about a hundred years ago. Machines replaced barbells and dumbbells a long time ago. Good vid man.
Mike is the Messiah.
That intro😂
For real. Could have been parodying any of about a hundred channels.
At the end of the day I use both. The only thing I don't really touch is barbell. If I'm not feeling like I'm strong to use dumbbells that day, or I'm tired or whatever the reason, I'll work with machines.
It's pretty simple, do the exercises that you enjoy doing. No need to complicate it and turn it into a big debate
I 1000% agree. I think things are becoming overly complicated in the fitness community. "DO THIS! NOT THAT!" "WHY DOING THIS AND NOT THAT IS RUINING YOUR GAINS!"
C'mon. I've used barbells and dumbbells, kettlebells, sandbags, calisthenics. Guess what? THEY ALL WORK and helped me in my growth in one way or another.
Agreed. Accumulated all my injuries using barbells, even with good form. Years of back squatting WILL fuck up your neck and spine (C6-T2 region). Years of deadlifting way too heavy at 2x+ bodyweight WILL stretch out your neck and trap ligaments beyond repair. Years of doing weighted dips and over focus on pressing movements WILL eventually cause some type of shoulder impingement and pop. After 3 MRIs and 40 years old now, I use nothing less than 6 reps, nothing more than 20 reps. DB and Cables only, feels good.
@@danzena4059 exactly! During the first lockdown here in Australia, I trained using resistance tubes, bands and bodyweight exercises. I held onto most of my size and strength over 3 months from the gym.
Muscles don't care which you use. They only know tension and stress. My buddy built his legs during lockdowns while squatting with two huge steel barrels filled with water. He drilled holes in them and attached the bar to the barrels. The man built his squat up better then he ever did in the gym.
@@intensity.density2208 Oh yeah! I remember before I got into barbell squatting I used my own bodyweight doing various different squats and hill sprints. Yes, lots and lots of reps but legs were big, strong, chiseled. Then I added these rusty kettlebells my neighbor didn't want which was given to me and those added to my leg and overall body development. I didn't have anything fancy.
Then I finally went to an actual gym with all the nooks and crannies, got into strongman. And yeah, that was a level up for sure.
However, I know I'm good without a gym and I'm good with using pretty much any equipment that's available. It's all what you make out of it and how creative you can get with it.
I only use machines especially in the last 2 years of my training as I got into my 30s but I go heavy and really focus on mind to muscle connection. Than one day I started working out my coworker and I was doing 90 pound dumbbell rows 12 reps with very good form. While my roommate who usually works out with free weights was using 110. I could have done 100 but my point is you can get pretty strong with machines and the best part is you’re less likely to get injured. Just do what you feel and don’t worry about the next person.
Fixed equipment and movements have always worked best for me. Over the years, so many people constantly bag on the Smith. I fckn love that thing. Always have. I’ll take the machines over free weights any day.
Best f*****g intro !!! 💪
I think newer and more “evolved” machines are perfect tools to help teach beginners the correct movements patterns and pathways. You’ve said it before but I absolutely agree.
"you don't see anyone at the golf club with clubs from 1913 made of stick" 😂 😂 😂 😂 that got me!!
Pure gold advice 💯. Thank you.
A bamboo stick with a whittled rock on the end!
😂😂😂😂 That's the Flintstones! Mike is hilarious!
Thanks Donyell 🙏
Sunday school is in session! Time to grow the wicked way!
Glad to see you doing great things. Kimberley ps to central tech I knew you’d go places. Keep killing it brother
you are damn right might, past bodybuilders would absolutely use current equipment.
It totally makes logical sense. People aren’t walking to work or taking a horse to their office job, they’re driving in air conditioned/heated, very comfortable cars. The times are changing everywhere, so why not apply the same thing to bodybuilding? Yes free weights have their place in athleticism, rehab, etc., but if you have fantastic machines at your disposal, why not use them?
I do almost 90% selectorized resistance machines (the ones where you can quickly take the pin in and out of the stack) in order to perform double drop sets on every set. It cuts your time in the gym by over 50%. It's really humbling to do double drop sets on a chest press machine going down to 50 lbs on the last drop feels like your trying to lift 200 lbs. Machines that have a diverging/converging path are a huge plus and then another plus if the machine has unilateral action (you can alternate the pull/press with each arm). A diverging lat pull down machine hits the lats so much harder than the old school lat pull down bars or dumbbell rows and your lats engage hard as fuck when you're smoked and switch to unilateral reps and pull that handle all the way down like you're trying to dig into your hip. You can potentially perform drop sets with dumbbells by setting up 3 sets of dumbbells with decreasing weight but you look like a huge asshole taking up 3 pairs of dumbbells off the rack just for yourself.
Anyone reading this that wants to open a portal to hell and dip waist deep inside it . . . do nothing but double drop sets on a selectorized leg press machine. You'll want to immediately decrease the weight after every set and your heart will be trying to jump out of your chest.
I love the sound of Big Mike's man beard scratching on the microphone. It's a top-notch fully immersive ASMR experience.
That's the intro we need.
Happy to be of service.
You had me @ Half the work & half the genetics 🧬💪🏿🎯🤠🆘🤣🤣🤣
“Wanna figure out how to not work out and get big” lmfaoo excellent summary
you're completely right Mike. Awesome info.

That intro was fkn hilarious, Mike. ☠ Excellent advice, as always.
That last chest video was great. Just moving my head killed it !! I'll watch every single video from here on thanks bud💪💪

From one big Mike to another
couple of iron mikes
Great tips as usual Mike but I have to say that intro was the BEST ! 😆
Thanks Lesley 🙏
Seen you on Fouads podcast and looked up your channel…. Great vids and info bud I’m a sub now…
Free weight & machines complement each other, plus gives you more options and angles to hit in your training. Look I'm 57,grew up on old school, and it took its toll over the years, and when your hurting a bit,the machine can make the difference in training or not.
I can't decide if I watch every one of Mike's videos for the lifting advice or the comedy. Either way, I walk away with a better understanding of how to move and a good chuckle.
Yeah, increasingly I view dumbbells as obsolete technology, thanks largely to you. If these guys realised that being on a track would allow them to push the weight more, because you don't have to worry about stabilising or finding the line of tension, they'd probably get over their fixation on caveman tools.
Brilliant video. Loved the intro. (I'm here for twice the lats with half the genetics in half the time with half the effort.)
Thanks Daniel, and good luck with your lats. 👍
This channel should be called ‘YOU ROCK’
Also I’m also finding some benefit from your advice of relaxing the parts of your body that your not focusing on… so simple, core locked always of course… gains still coming at 55 years 💪
Thanks Greggie, lift long and prosper 🖖
Mike spitting truth, 👍💯💪
bruh, quickly becoming my favorite. that intro?! dudes a comedian and doesnt even know it. love it
love this
I understand all this, but I swear by dumbbells. They will always be a big part of my workout routine.
That intro 💯🙌🏼😂
😂 great opening video!
Nail on the head- hopefully LA fitness herd this
Thanks coach
Thanks Delmar, I see your comments every video and I appreciate them.
Best intro ever lol
It would be awesome if you could make a how to use series for every machine/free weights. There are a lot of videos out there but with your methods it makes sense
It’s in the works. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@WYCKEDTRAINING I pledge a like for every such video! Thanks for all the info, you've brought my bodybuilding game to a whole new level. You are the best around bar none. You're also the one who gave me the best resource on PEDs ; Broderick Chavez.

@@WYCKEDTRAININGawesome
The way you do these flyes, can we say you're developing lower pec too? Congratulations and thank you for your channel
Dumbbells have their place to increase ROM in applications but they do get abused in ways that causes imbalances.
Your explanation of not using dumbbells is interesting I find pressing dumbbells is more comfortable for my shoulders than barbell and dumbbells strengthens all those stabilizing muscles also but maybe don’t go as heavy on dumbbells but I think it’s a really good pressing movement
Low incline dumbbell presses are fantastic chest builders. John Meadows approved.
Machine will produce more stability but dumbbells and barbells will make stability so use machine if u have access or simply stick to the staples
Lmmfao bro “half the work and half the genetics” 💀😂
I’m on the floor 😂😂😂😂
I have some shoulder issues too I get it .. the cable flies with the "Scoop" motion ..drop the shoulder blades , open hands and be in a more natural position. Rock on brother.
Truth
Do you ever train rotatorcuffs Mike? I solved most of my shoulder issues doing those, and i had big shoulder issues, it made certain movements impossible.
Hey mike watching your videos i can totally relate to shoulder injuries since i have turned 58 i had bilateral rotator cuff tears
My point is when i did cable pec like most muscular my shoulders would kill me
So your video suggests flat palm and moving weight through hands
I have tried w half the weight and never have i gotten such pump in my chest
Thks bro
Ps i will be in toronto in may/june how can i connect for a workout personal training session!
Thks for everything mike!
You have no idea how happy that makes me David. Feel free to reach out on Instagram if you have it, otherwise my email is in the description of the video and we can set something up there.
Do you have any tips for people who have wrist issues when it comes to your palm technique?
Yes! I was looking for a shortcut for so long to look like Arnold and....oh you were kidding. 😄
Don’t worry Jesse I got you in the next one.
*dead* from that intro lol!
The intro is fire 🔥🤣🤣🤣
Improvise, adapt and overcome as you age.
That intro 🤣..... Had to watch it twice
So nice had to watch it twice. Appreciate it Juan.
Would be good to know what combinations of free weights and machine you would use for a full body workout. Compounds are king but sometimes the “accessory” choices made aren’t the most optimum
Mike! Do you offer any programs? I.e bulking program, cutting program etc?? I’m just piecing my workouts from what you do on videos. It would be cool to see it on paper and follow.
Tyrannosaurus traps with half the genetics 🔥 hilarious man
I gotta a fucked up shoulder to.. To the point where I have to like test it before every workout to see what I can and can’t do that day🙄.. Guess I should try to add some more Decca😜
My gym finally got rid of the Hammer Strength jammer that no one used and is getting a hack squat. There is hope 😂
I agree with Mike’s principle. Machines attempt to optimise a movement to illicit best growth from a particular muscle. But, in my own personal experience a full concentration on using machines gives a look that looks weird, unnatural. I think it is because it misses key points (spinal erectors, forearms, core to some extent). I still think there is a value in combining free weights and machines.
I’m far from an expert but those are my thoughts as well.
@@kez850 Same. Mike’s advice is golden, but you have to realise he also built his physique from barbells and dumbbells to begin with. Even someone like Frank Zane who was known for “accessory” lifts and chasing the pump, he put his physique down to a foundation in compounds with free weights.
@@liamburns8554 there’s a level of symmetry and cohesion from barbell compounds, and even dumbbell compounds that you’ll struggle to get from machines.
You also get cool stuff like thick abs from standing barbell press without having to spam crunches 24/7 lol
I would agree that some modern day machine only physiques do not look natural. Everyone from the golden era was balanced because everything was always working in conjunction so nothing could grow unproportionally. Now to bring up a lagging body part, a machine would be ideal-it puts all the emphasis on the target muscle.
That being said once the foundations is built machines are a godsend once you get older and beat up.
@@medaillemaverick Totally agree. As a later intermediate lifter, with 15 years experience (first 8 I was lost), I really recognise the value of machines and cables. But they are just another tool with pros and cons. As dumbells and barbells are.
that was awesome, lol
🤘🏼
Intro made me laugh.
T-shirt design: "Not the shortcut channel"
That promo intro was off the fucking chain lmao 🤣🤣 I was dead funny af
Wow great “shortcuts” on the these exercises man lol
Ayoooo this is the best intro I’ve ever seen 😂😂😂😂
Shout out to my editor Alora for being down with the antics. Glad you liked it. 😂
what's the brand and model of that machine?
That fuckin intro 😂
If there was no visual I’d swear that was Hogan cutting a promo
Do incline Dumbbell
BODYBUILDING= CHASING THE CONNECTION, not the weight.
You got it.
No dumbbells in your work out how are the joints in your body
"Do none of you speak to people?" 😂😂😂
Pro tip😂
Just picking up heavy dumbbells from the rack and get ready for the lift, i'm already tired...lol
Information is very true and useful, but you will still see your ego lifters out at the gym as long as people ignore those knuckleheads and take your advice people will enjoy working out more, some people still don’t understand stand the muscle memory or muscle connection saying to help grow muscle, well ranting again From Arizona ✌🏻
That fuckin intro was classic
All I could afford is a membership at goodlife fml
I absolutely cherry picked equipment from that gym in my build!
Hulk hogan intro
How to achieve that sagging back like ronnie Coleman 😁
My Nokia never dropped a call
EOS
😂😂😂
I'm surprised Mike doesn't use a Nokia tbh.
real growth is in compound movements , dumbbells are just for adding volume to training. my personal experience is that i grew my overall body with compound lifts like rowing. benching. deadlifting. and for legs i do leg press . because when i was doing squats .i was tired after just 2 sets. barbell squats are too much load on nervous system. i was burnt out by squats so i turned to leg press and never looked back. my leg development is good. and also very little chance or getting yourself injured in leg press. my lower back is thanking me since i left squats. and for chest gains incline barbell press and for back t.bar rowing with landmine. for triceps i do closegrip bench. and for shoulders over head press with barbell. behind the neck press. and i only use dumbbells for lateral raises. over all growth is good.
So real growth don’t come from compound movements? 😂😂😂
@@bobbywoll7942 it does come with compound lifts. i just stay away from squats and barbell lateral raises. instead use dumbbells for side laterals
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I asked my question too early. The answer was in this video. 😁
DB v machine is like driving a stick shift compared to an automatic. If you can't connect with the muscle, your wasting your time anyway (for bodybuilding).
Bingo.
This man really said, "We're not muscle builders, we're bodybuilders". He literally just says anything. Grumpy dude too.
So then watch someone else Putit.
Can you Putit?
I hope you get the help you so clearly need.
I am 59, been training for over 45 yrs, trained in Gold's gym Venice for over 20. I haven't used barbell bench or any dumbbell presses in yrs should especially are really healthy. I use hammer and nautilus and free motion machines. Dorian used machines, lat oullover, lat iso pulldowns, hammer bench, legs nothing but. Dexter longevity because as he got older he incorporated machines, that I know because I watched him train with Charles Glass. It's smarter especially as we get older. You lose integrity of lift and form there goes most likely a shoulder or something else. The object is to stay healthy with no injury breaks to keep growing.
Would really like to see a collabo of you and Chris bumstead.
Do you guys ever get bored of gaying off to CBORING
People will ditch the dumbbells but then replace them with some other asinine trendy tiktok bullshit and continue to ignore the excellent equipment around them that’s tailor-made to help them achieve their goals. Apparently everyone’s smarter than the companies that have dedicated years and thousands of dollars to developing these machines.
Imagine if arnold knew this stuff.😵💫😵💫😵💫
I've had this discussion with internet randoms so many times, I'm just done. Even Larry Wheels have said on multiple occasions that machines are the best way to build muscle. Most people doesn't seem to understand the difference between strength and build training. In my country, there is no gym that has hypertrophy as an option when they ask you how you train. If you lift a weight, it's all called strength training, even doctors only talk about strength training.
Once i ditched bench presses, squats, seated rows and what not, many years ago, and started to focus on isolation training on cables and in machines, i started to grow fast. So i actually grow a lot faster now in my mid 40's that i ever did in my mid 20's.
Why do you use so much pafanity?
Couple of issues, one theres nothing wrong with good old fashion dumbbells! They are not obsolete ever gym in the world has them! They get the job if you know who to properly use them. Not everyone had cables in a home gym.
Second dumbbells have built some dam great physique’ s over the years. Don’t tell me you didn’t use them. I will continue to use them.
Your shoulder issues are your issues. I have no shoulder issue and I’m 70. I’ve lifted on and off since 1968. Dumbbells will never go out of style, just sayin!
this guy prefers the tattoos no?
What a clickbait title
Did you even watch the video?
