      Yes!!! My mom passed in 86 and she lived figure skating. I remember the last winter Olympics before she passed. She was so excited to watch Scott Hamilton and there wasn't much TV she watched but when figure skating came on even my dad had to change the channel. When I see Scott I think of her and smile. I could care less about quads and such. He was the ultimate showman. The audience loved him.

    I was nine years old when I saw him on television. I still remember this routine like it was yesterday. Watching this today in the year 2022 makes me feel like a kid again. He was unreal. When he got on the ice, you knew you were going to be entertained. Best of all, you could tell he loved what he was doing and HE was having fun, which made us viewers have fun too. He will forever be the best skater that ever lived. No one compares to Scott and those badass back flips!!!

      Oh yeah!!! I kept waiting for the backflip...Waiting for the backflip... Waiting for the backflip... And he didn't do it. Like millions of other viewers, I sighed, but grateful to see Scott back on the ice, even without the backflip. I'd prayed daily for his recovery. But then-- "I wouldn't really be back..." And the audience SCREAMED IN ANTICIPATION... HE DID THE BACKFLIP!!!!! One of the greatest comebacks EVER!!! I had tears rolling down my face from sheer joy! 😺💕🐾

      see now I disagree ... even Scott talks highly about Nathan Chen. Nathan has progressed past the quads regiment & has added fun artist motion into his routines. & it's not just Scott as all the greats look at Nathan as a throwback to them but going beyond.
      Don't detract from some icons not only in US but around the world. There is a young one out of Japan that smacks of old blended with new.
      Then a very young skaters coming into play here in US. Just needs more experience. Took Nathan a while. Just as it did Scott.

      Oh, Theresa I so agree with you. I miss the Scott Hamilton era which includes pairs dance and singles. We had more exhibitions, Pro competitions and although all skaters can't do 6 or 7 quads in a program, which is definitely a skill, I really miss the entertainment as well. I. Love. Scott. And the best part was he skated for us, his fans. I loved that great big smile at the end of his programs.

    Happened to run across this while looking for something else. What a memory. This era was a passion for the sport; now it seems to be more of a job. I loved it when the figures were part of the Olympics. Scott Hamilton had it all and loved every minute of it. I had the privilege of seeing him twice in person; and also got to meet Brian Boitano. They can do all the quads, triples, etc, now, but there will never be footwork like Scott Hamilton. Go Scott.

      Adam King you are wrong. Many skaters have done back flip. Scott wasn't first who has done this and he wasn't last. In fact, they say back flip is easier than triples, It's just take some time to learn it.

    This was when skaters were artists and entertainers. It's not that way anymore, now it's just jump jump jump. The artistry and innovation is now completely gone from skating.

      idk about that. Check out the 2015 Grand Prix free skate from Yuzuru Hanyu. The expression and artistry is definitely still alive. Comparing the two isn't really fair. Figure skating has evolved a lot. Look at the time Scott takes into building for a jump. You don't see that in a lot of programs now. Everything is a little more fluid. But don't get me wrong, I love me some Scott Hamilton. :) Reminds me of watching it when I was a kid.

      I notice that sometimes as well, it's more the fault of the scoring system though. The more jumps, and the more jumps that are done solidly, the higher your technical score gets. People who want to compete typically have to rely on doing jumps to up their score and to advance throughout the rounds. The only way that that could be fixed is to amend the scoring systems to value artistry, or rather performance and presentation, over the technicality that comes with sticking the landing on jumps.

    • @Barry7777777
      @Barry7777777 7 років тому +6

      Nice point, Nicole - his jump preparations do seem unnaturally drawn out and anticipatory. Considering his polish as a performer otherwise, I wonder if some of that is deliberately done to let tensions build and give the viewer plenty of time to see there's a jump coming - at least I thought it may have been a cool added bit of spice.

    Scott knew what his niche was, master entertainer. When he came to the ice you knew you were in for a show. You wondered where all that power came from. I don't know if I ever saw him fall or miss a jump.
