An old neighbor of mine was a plumber… He used to admit that he would deliberately spend hours under someone’s house on a job that took 15 minutes to complete. The customers didn’t know any different and he reaped the benefits. Never got busted. Because the system was legally setup with the loophole in place. Obviously he knew it was illegal, yet nothing could stop him from the behavior. I wonder how many loopholes like this are in politics.

While it's true that most people who ascend hierarchies are doing so based on competence, there's no denying that those at the top have a tendency to misuse or exploit their positions once they realize that they can get away with it with few consequences because they don't have a superior to keep them in check.

It works the other way too. You could have an institution known for competence and absolutely wreck it by having it act with authority but with incompetence, would ruin it. Such institutions naturally dissolve over time unless preserved with force.

And after all, RADICALIZATION aka destroying all relationships in a society with the specific goal of toppling that society IS A TENET OF THE MARXIST CULT RELIGION!

So, my libertarian side agrees with most, but zero sum does happen...monopolies. I'm not against winner take all, but I am against companies like Apple, Google (ironically progressive companies), that have literally destroyed industry or small businesses, without having to compete or intentionally blocking competition. We've all seen the lawsuits, arguments, and we've all seen the minuscule penalties.
Zero sum does happen and its not just those who are constantly getting abused or invite abuse.

I may have mentioned this before in another comment on the same topic. In physics and engineering " power " is not defined as political power nor as power of any other social or administrative authority such as parents, teachers, police officers, managers, etc. Instead in the context of physics power is simply the ABILITY to do work. Without that type of power there could be no competence of any kind. And let's face it in many organizations competent folks are often promoted to positions of greater administrative "power." A popular book some decades ago called THE PETER PRINCIPLE illustrated that trend. Folks are promoted up the organizational hierarchy till they reach a level of incompetence. And there they remain . . . stuck until they quit, retire, are fired, or die.

“Hitler was unbelievably good at letting the crowd tell him what to say. You know, he was, he was a mirror for the crowd, and he was a good orator. But he paid attention to the crowd, so when he said something that made everyone cheer, you know, their dark hearts would come out in the mob and cheer about something he said that was, say, dramatic or vengeful. Well, then, he’d say more of that... and so the crowd taught him over time exactly what to sell them. And that can be good in some sense.” Jordan Peterson, poppy-wearing neo-Nazi

Dr Peterson, I’ve never heard you speak much about Tolkiens LOTR. It’s very curious to me that he emphasised man’s obsession with power. Ie. the ring and its allure on men.
Clearly, he was writing before postmodernism, and there’s no evidence he was influenced by Nietzsche at all. I am curious to know why “power” was such an important part of the way he conceptualised human beings?
It’s important to note this doesn’t just apply to male characters either, because there are strong female characters ie. Galadriel etc. who are also tempted by the same will to power.
Many thanks for all your work!

7:04 - the desire for surety, need for confidence of current ethos/actions easily entices most people to construct rigid or imagined permanence to their internal hierarchy constructs,
the fewer devices of internal change/perspective they have developed earlier in their lives the more critical it becomes for these anchors of reason/decision not to be changed.
the more flexible, imaginative and temporary these inter-changeable hierarchies of ethos/actions are, the less difficult and even joyful the learning process can be.
if all things are temporary then you had better quickly discover and share the value in it whatever form it may take

All competence hierarchies are the increasing of power.
Power is the ability to translate intention into reality.
A plumber is someone who has become the power to distinguish and create effective plumbing.
Jordan is unconsciously triggered by power because his emotional development was disempowered by the emotional incompetence hierarchy imposed on him by his severely traumatized father. Jordan has unconsciously internalized and conflated "power" with the disempowering opinions and stubbornness of a father unconsciously run by the decisions of an emotionally trapped and traumatized boy. Walt described his father as "(a conflict) over damn near everything!!"

I understand the point. However, what does someone understand for "power"? For instance, Thomas Hobbes defines power as the capacity to achieve a goal. In such definition, "power" is aligned with "competence". On the other hand, some define power as "oppression exerted by force". Therefore, "power" could signify "competence" to some, and to some it could mean "oppression".

The idea that society _isn't_ predicated on power is an attack on rationality.
Competence plays a role of course and the two are measured in some capacity but the idea the most competent individual automatically rises to the top irrespective of their initial conditions is risible.
For the majority of history the most competent individual would simply have been tilling grass in a field.

we want monkeys to be competent as the best and brightest of humans because monkeys represent us at our basest, laziest. our easiest, most cost effective to maintain. and we seem to be under the delusion that this cost will remain as low as it is even if we make it competent as the best and brightest. that passing down this knowledge to the monkeys will be perfect with absolutely no flaws and will be entirely efficient in its own right.

They are, however, based off of monkey instincts and not all of us are monkeys. If the hierarchy doesn't make room for humans who, don't have to comply because they are human, then it is based off of evil, not power.

Is it that Jordan doesn't understand that political power is what is being indicted ? Some hierarchies are built on competency, like those of business' where entrepreneurs brought their vision to fruition by taking the risks and delaying their gratification to own their business hierarchy that succeeded and may employ many resources and people. Some hierarchies are built through violent power; Political hierarchies are built through this way. Political power exists by dictate, and by force of military and police. Voting does not confer ruler-ship over those who do not agree on these terms from the beginning. You would assume freedom and property was given to you by government vs. existing with individuals if you thought property was titled only by dictate by government. Jordan is talking past these serious inquiries.

I'm not going to have any politicians arrested, but it doesn't take much to get political authority at your home or business if you don't space your tables six feet apart or haven't mowed your lawn. No politician in contractually bound to any voter. More importantly is this presumption that political power is valid because some voting group put forth a majority vote and now has power over everyone; those who didn't want either candidate, and those who lost. This is logically outrageous.

@@ronpaulrevered I'd say your analysis may be correct in terms of what's been happening for a very long time. But... the beginnings of political structures were not formed by "gangsters", especially not in smaller communities. Each public servant was vetted by the public before being deemed worthy of serving the public, and her interests.
As communities became bigger, the more complex the structures became for the common people, and the easier it was for bullies to use force to take and stay in higher positions of the established hierarchies.
This is a really complex issue, but it's roots still stem from the voters' perception of who's who in the structure.

what Lysander Spooner had to say about the Constitution. If it wasn't a contractual deal with every individual, then it is not valid.
