Making them as quick as I can!! Really appreciate the support. And yeah that’s a very common issue on the old 2 strokes, just sounds like you have a bit of dirt stuck in the high speed jet on your carburetor. Cleaning the carb should solve your issue! Either that or you have an air leak somewhere between your gas tank and the motor 👍🏼 make sure gas tank is vented as well. Also if it’s just a bit of dirt in the high speed jet many times you can just buy a can of seafoam and mix it with your gasoline and let it run for a bit. Seafoam will clean your jets and sometimes you can get lucky and not have to pull the carb off at all! (Although I always recommend removing it and thoroughly cleaning it). Best of luck to you!! Always available on instagram to give you any advice you need to get your granddads motor running. He’d be proud 👍🏼
When shopping for a project outboard, how old is too old? I bought a 4hp Evenrude about 7 years ago probably 1980s, took it for service, and was told many parts for that engine were no longer available. I looked up the parts and it seemed the shop was correct. Ended up leaving it at the shop and walked away from it. Great videos, Please keep 'em coming.
@@LouisBackover thank you! Also it really depends on the parts… also your issue was most likely less of how old it was but how low of horsepower it was. I’ve never had issues finding parts on any Evinrudes from 1965-1999 but I also really only work on 9.9 to 25 hp. And also depends on if you’re buying carburetor kits or pistons / cylinder rings…

Quick question. First I want to thank you for your podcast. I’ve learned a lot watching you. My question is I have a 9.9 mercury. I believe it’s a 1998 and I understand you can just change out a carburetor and make it a 15 horse. This motor is a two stroke motor. Can you switch out the carburetors on the older style mercury?
Good stuff, the explanations are great, don't under-estimate the value of the clean-ups and little stuff (maybe in fast forward?). How about some of the 'problem' cases? Watching how to spot, and then fix worse-case scenarios would be awesome!
I am building a 1648 panfish stick steer. I could really use some advice on what prop to get for a 25hp mercury 2 stroke from the 80's. I cannot find what came on the old bass tracker panfish. As far as weight. I will be lighter than the tracker panfish overall. Any advise will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
G'day BB, why do some lakes have a minimum HP of 9.9 is it to do with speed and erosion to the banks or insurance? thanks I thoroughly enjoyed this video 👍.
Thank you!! And there’s really not a lot of info out there about the origins of the restrictions, but I believe it was because certain lakes were originally used as sources of drinking water and the law originated with the EPA. But it also could very well be due to the general size and depth. Not 100% sure! Thank you for the support though!
Love did it another awesome video😮😮🙏🙏You are at 527 Subs with just two videos bro you need more content LOL😋😋 you are killing it with the editing👌👌👍👍😁😁
You are a great new addition to the UA-cam community! Outstanding videos so far - and entertaining. I need a driveshaft for a Johnson 70 horse, 1989. Got anything?
You paid $200 for a 6HP outboard that you didn’t know was even working?!?!?? Well, when you make $200 profit, minimum, I shouldn’t complain….nice work! ❤❤
This just shows how much prices vary by area, Around here anything under 9,9hp is a tiygh sell running or not and a $100 motor at best. 9.9 and 15hp 2stroke motors bring $1k or better in season, about half of that in cold months. Larger remote motors are hit or miss, generally smaller 2 strokes are hard to find buyers for, larger 115 and up motors do better. Mercury in general is harder to sell then OMC. The fish police here gave a buddy a ticket a few years ago for running a Honda 100 (10hp), on a 9.9hp restricted lake. Although to game warden mistook the Honda 100 decals as meaning '100hp, a judge upheld the ticked because even 10hp is over the 9,9hp limit. It cost him over $700 when it was al done. I have four of those motors and have run them there for 30yrs or more without issue but they chose to pic on an 80 year old man that day for some reason. I've simply changed the "100" labels on mine to '9.9hp' since then.
That’s insane… yeah there’s a lot of variance in price for sure.. also, seriously?? 9.9 and 10 Hp are the same thing… writing a ticket to anyone for that is disgusting, especially for an old man. Really sucks to hear that
Real question, how many hours are you putting into each motor? I feel like adding that would really help with a true costs breakdown, because labor will drastically skew costs.
Hey man I just got a 1986 evinrude 2 stroke motor and it ran fine when I got it maybe a week ago and the 3rd time I started it it would only start with the stick all the way in forward and even then it was taking my 1648 jon about 6 miles an hour, I’ve got good compression on both cylinders, have spark, rebuilt carb several times, any ideas what it could be? Thank you this is killing me, it’s my first boat and I’m a little lost
Sounds like an issue with the float in your carb. Usually no start unless wide open is a tell tale sign that your carburetor is flooding the cylinders. Too much gas to ignite until you open the throttle and the extra air will allow it to start. Since this is your first boat, a very common beginner mistake is not having your gas tank vented. Gas tanks have a vent on the lid that has to be open to let pressure out. Vent the gas cap and unscrew it to let pressure out before connecting your fuel line. What happens is the pressure builds in the gas tank then you release it into your engine and the pressure from not being vented will force excess gasoline into your motor. So first and foremost make sure your gas tank is vented properly. Next thing make sure your primer bulb is facing the right direction! There’s usually an arrow to indicate correct direction of fuel flow. Lastly, just because you rebuilt the carbs does not mean the float is set correctly. They need to be set manually and are not pre-adjusted “out of the box” … the float must be level and there is a line on it to mark how high / low it needs to be. There is a test (no tools required) to make sure your float is closing properly, I demonstrate it in my most recent video!! Also these motors run surprisingly well on only one cylinder. I would get a gap tester and make sure spark on all cylinders can jump a 7/16” gap. If you have any more questions or need more help I’m always here as a resource for my UA-cam community- feel free to DM me on instagram (same username) and I’ll help you work through your issues best I can!
@@MichaelAnthony-f7p red wire goes to the right post on the starter solenoid, black wire goes to engine ground: normally on the bolt that holds the starter to the block 💯
@@BoatBusters well since I’m here I might as well ask another question, I have an evinrude 25hp outboard that has a lose starter. The cylinder that covers the inside of the starter is very lose with the gasket hanging out. How do I go about tightening the starter because I’m afraid if I start it it’ll fall apart. Thank you!!
I’ve been checking a couple of your videos and it inspired me to try to rebuild one myself, found a 1969 4hp Johnson for cheap, where do you get your information from? Do you have original manuals?
@@BoatBusters I gotcha lol, do you know the best place I can reliably find a service manual for my engine? I seen tons of download links online but I’m sure I should be wary of some
I get them on Amazon! The compression gauge is $15 and the spark tester is $6… I always recommend going for higher quality gear if you can afford it- but neither of them have ever done me wrong… proper engine diagnostics for a $20 bill (I’m cheap)
I have a larger tank that I test impellers in, the muffs were leaking on the 9.9 and the 6 the water was barely above the intake. Both were much stronger in the deep tank but I unfortunately didn’t film that. Good eye though! Was waiting for someone to call that out…
Are sellers generally willing to let you run through their outboards with testing, or is that a bit of a sales pitch on your part? Just wondering how willing they are to spend time while you do so on a $200 engine. What do you tell them? Thx, learning a lot!
@@jameswallen4854 depends on the deal. Often times people just don’t know what they have and will be selling a good motor for the price of a blown parts motor. In those situations I do not waste their time with tests and bs because I know his phone was ringing off the hook with people trying to come buy it. Also on those great deals I know that no matter what I find I’ll be able to at least part the engine out for some profit. However other times I’ll get into one a little below fair price and those I want to at least compression check. Small outboards really will never cost more than $100 to restore spark to if the ignition system needs work so I rarely test spark when buying. But if a seller can’t run the engine for me and refuses to give me 5 minutes to compression check the motor before I buy it then they’re 100% hiding something big and I’d rather not buy it from them. Only happened to me once, 99% of sellers will not have an issue with a quick compression test

@@BoatBusters part of the reason for the high price is they’re seen as collectibles now. A lot of people are looking for old school Johnson/Evinrude 9.9/15 hp 2 strokes. In some parts of the country you can pic them up fairly cheap, in other parts they fetch a premium.

You are a great new addition to the UA-cam community! Outstanding videos so far - and entertaining. I need a driveshaft for a Johnson 70 horse, 1989. Got anything?
That really means a lot to me! Much appreciated… and unfortunately not at the moment that will fit the one you’ve got…
Thanks friend! I found one last night actually. New subscriber here!
@@williamtunnell you rock man 🤝 thank you so much. Best of luck with your driveshaft project!
You paid $200 for a 6HP outboard that you didn’t know was even working?!?!??
Well, when you make $200 profit, minimum, I shouldn’t complain….nice work! ❤❤
Thank you! And if it happened to be a dud I’d get more than $200 parting it out on eBay.. (worst case scenario) so pretty minimal risk!!

@@TheBoundlessNexus these ones were honestly very lucky maybe 1-2 hours per motor tops. But yes I will start adding labor hours!

I did not see you check the water pump. You should pull The lower unit.
Can you do a lower unit race removal and install?
@@BoatBusters I got a mercy 50 hp and it has the shaft bearing race and the gear drive that has a race that I need out.. lol
Question for ya, where did you install the positive and negative wires on the motor?
@@MichaelAnthony-f7p red wire goes to the right post on the starter solenoid, black wire goes to engine ground: normally on the bolt that holds the starter to the block 💯
@@BoatBusters your the man! Idk how you responded that fast, but thank you
@@MichaelAnthony-f7p There is no higher priority than making sure my subs have their questions answered!!!
Thank you!!
@@MichaelAnthony-f7p shoot me some pics / vids to my instagram (same username) and we can take a look!
I’ve been checking a couple of your videos and it inspired me to try to rebuild one myself, found a 1969 4hp Johnson for cheap, where do you get your information from? Do you have original manuals?
@@Jason-fv5my just years and years of learning unfortunately haha I took the long route…
@@BoatBusters I gotcha lol, do you know the best place I can reliably find a service manual for my engine? I seen tons of download links online but I’m sure I should be wary of some
Most of those old motors i use to work on wasnt that bad for being dirty other than 2 cycle oil and bugs they are easy to fix
What a video, got my sub!
That made my day!! Really appreciate it
on the merc, all u had to do was connect the harness, cross the black and black/yellow stripe to kill it
Heyo, where do you order parts from??
Just got my first 4 stroke. Where’d you get the oil filler? That looks awesome
My local advanced auto parts sells them! Yeah they’re super great
Well done
Thank you!!
Where can I get that compression tester, and spark tester?
I get them on Amazon! The compression gauge is $15 and the spark tester is $6… I always recommend going for higher quality gear if you can afford it- but neither of them have ever done me wrong… proper engine diagnostics for a $20 bill (I’m cheap)
In wyoming...you aren't buying outboard engines for cheap like that! Great job.
Thank you so much!!
Did you check the impellers on both evinrudes? Both didn’t seem to be pumping much water?
I have a larger tank that I test impellers in, the muffs were leaking on the 9.9 and the 6 the water was barely above the intake. Both were much stronger in the deep tank but I unfortunately didn’t film that. Good eye though! Was waiting for someone to call that out…
Awesome channel. Subbed. Cheers from Sweden.
@@northernmotion090 🇸🇪 🇺🇸🤝 thank you!!
@@BoatBusters thats awesome man, thanks so much for taking the time with the detailed answer. Its makes total sense!

The black yellow wire is the kill switch wire for pretty much every Merc
We’re I am at buy Lake Erie there is only a few folks that work on outboard motors I usually charge hundred dollars per hour and I got people lined up every one else is charging a few hundred dollars per hour only sad thing is are summer are short living close to the Canadian shore line
That Evinrude 9.9 would fetch $1,200 where I’m at in Texas. Non running 9.9 Johnson/Evinrude go for $300-$500.
Wow 1200 is crazy! Never seen $1,000+ for a 2 stroke 9.9 before up here… 4 strokes are a different story though!
@@BoatBusters part of the reason for the high price is they’re seen as collectibles now. A lot of people are looking for old school Johnson/Evinrude 9.9/15 hp 2 strokes. In some parts of the country you can pic them up fairly cheap, in other parts they fetch a premium.
