There is a retrofit kit available on Amazon - you have to cut an access hatch where the filter should be and install the included filter and new hatch cover for the created hole. Thank you for this video! I just switched from a 2002 to 2003. Thanks for the link to the dorman filter kit. I cut the hole for the filter and got it done no problem. You just gotta have patience cleaning up the cut hole a bit then its easy.
Just bought a 03 silverado. Man it has a horrible smell with the ac on! Does anyone know if there is a way to get in there and clean it, a spray or something or is the retro fit kit the only thing I can do?
after ordering a filter for 2007 GMC Sierra, and watching youtube videos for an hour, and running out of blood pressure medication, because there is no NO FILTER where they say there is a filter I found your video, and decided to take a nap.
I understand completely! There is a retrofit kit available if you want to cut open the plastic blower housing and add a new door. I pinned a comment with the link above.
Well that makes my life easier, was thinking about changing the cabin air filter in my 2006 Sierra, now I don’t have to.Thanks for saving me a few hours of frustration.✌️
I dropped the glove box, and thought where the hell is the cabin air filter that I have been neglecting for a long time and pulled up the UA-cam and found your vid, saved me time, thank you sir.
Thank you, my father has been looking under the dashboard for two years - searching for that dang cabin air filter. He's appreciates the information. Yes, enjoyed the video - now he's looking for the fuel filter for the 2007 Classic Sliverado.
Just finally found your video after wasting 1/2 hour or more searching stuck my finger in where it was supposed to be lol no filter Now put it all back I though my mechanic said he changed it a few years ago Thx for your video
Well. I took all my dash apart and the filter was no where to be found. Finally this video come up on my search and come to find out THERE IS NO FILTER 🙈🙈🙈. Thanks for the video.
After weeks of combing every inch of the car and countless other videos showing how easy it is to change Cabin Air Filter on similar platforms(Silverado and other Models of Sierra), I stumbled upon your posting. Thanks a bunch, I can sleep well tonight and hopefully get a replacement on my purchase :)
I had to replace the blower fan resistor assembly, so I figured I'd get that filter as well. After 40 minutes poking around and bending into positions my antique bones don't appreciate, I gave up; your video confirmed what I suspected. Now to get a refund from O'Reilly...
I just took out my heater fan motor because it was vibrating really bad and found a rat's nest so I thought I would look for a video on how to replace the cabin air filter and I'm glad I came across your video because now I don't have to worry about it.
@MrBrickboy38 GM didn’t communicate to vendors that the filter was deleted, so all the catalogs show the same part as previous years. That’s why there was a special bulletin from GM.
@MrBrickboy38 But you are right too, it’s strange and frustrating that you can’t depend on the parts catalogs. Better communication on GMs part would have avoided this.
Thank goodness my old toyota 4runner has a cabin air filter, with all the fire smoke around a hepa filter works wonders my old gmc truck i dont drive much for this very reason
Thank you! I keep seeing videos showing how to change it for an 07, that looks different. Mine looks like your's. It was driving me nuts trying to find it.
I have the same truck. So basically we don't have cabin air filters? I just got a k and n air filter from autozone and the guy said "every car has one"
@@armandol1826 The GM memo covered 2003-2013 trucks so in that model range you probably don’t. Basically there is still a place for one, but they removed the access hatch. Dumb move, GM. You can get the aftermarket hatch from the link above and cut a hole and add it if you want one. Several people have commented that they did just that, went smoothly and worked fine.
Thanks for the video. Wasted two hours tonight getting that stupid panel off and looking everywhere for the filter. Why would they sell a cabin air filter for a vehicle that doesn't have one?
@darthgumby2406 Sorry you didn’t see the video first! I did the same thing disassembling my dash for no reason. Apparently the filter manufacturers either were never notified the filter was dropped or they never updated their catalogs. GM had the service bulletin so it seems like the filter companies. Thanks for the note!
I wish I can see this beauty like an hour ago I didn't know I have this truck for like a couple years and not so now I want to replace that thank you bro anyway
Thanks. Bought one for my 2006 silverado. Spent last couple hours searching for it. Internet turned up mixed results. Looks like I'll be taking it back for a refund.
@Todd Hamrick Yeah I did the same thing. It’s frustrating that some places show it as an option but the GM memo seems to be the final, correct result. You can add one, but it’s not there from the factory in the years listed. Thanks for the note!
@7chilj That’s the big question isn’t it? Several possibilities; the cabin air intakes are clogged with leaves, sticks, etc. the can be located against the windshield. Also apparently there IS a cabin air filter in some models but it’s not replaceable, since GM removed the access hatch. With the link in the description you can find an aftermarket door for the filter area and add it yourself. It’s not that easy. Reports are that the filter there is clogged and nasty and blocks airflow. Pull it out after cutting a new hatch, put in a new filter, install hatch and maybe things blow better….
Does anyone know a part number or name for that cover he took off? I have an 01 that's missing that piece and I can't find the name or part number anywhere.
The GM service bulletin says they redesigned the blower case and there was no place for a filter in the new design. Seems suspicious since you can buy a hatch on Amazon and cut a hole in the blower case and add a filter. My guess is it was a short sighted cost cutting measure...
@Richard Avey I feel your pain - I did exactly the same thing! You ‘can’ cut a hole in the bottom of the blower case and add a hatch from Amazon that will let up place a filter. Some folks have done that and reported it worked pretty good.
I've been wanting to change mine for awhile till I found your video right after I watched yours saying there isn't one I saw one saying you have to remove the blower fan and you are able to see it so now I'm totally confused 🤔
@Roland Mazzucchi I understand-there are lots of differing opinions for sure. I took my under dash apart and could not find it so I started researching and found the memo from GM to their dealers that said there is not one in that year range. There is a ‘place’ for one in the blower case, but you have to cut a hole in the plastic to get the filter in, and then install an aftermarket door hatch to close the hole (there is a link to that hatch in the description). If you are handy with tools and working under a dash you can certainly add one.
So you mean to tell me when I went to autozone and asked a guy for a cabin air filter for my 2003 Chevy Tahoe, he looked it up, found it and gave it to me, I paid 20 bucks for it, and it’s useless bc I don’t have a cabin air filter????
@Miguel A Unfortunately that is the case. You can get a retrofit kit and cut a place for it, but yeah - it was deleted in the 2003 model year. I did the same thing!
@GLS.25 It’s most likely whatever is inside the blower area where the filter should be. You can cut a slot into the housing - replacement doors are on Amazon, dig out the material in the and replace with a new filter. Big job but it might be your only option to kill that smell.
Yeah they don't have them in the 04 tahoes either. I just looked all over for mine after pulling my dash apart and everything. I couldn't find it and watched a video and then watched yours and found out I don't have one
@Ada Woodcock Yes, I’ve heard that from others too about the Tahoes of that era. Would have saved a lot of dashboards being disassembled if GM/Chevy would have been more forthcoming on the deletions they made!
@Concetta You probably don’t according to the GM memo. My bet is that you do not. The only way to know for sure is to drop the under dash cover and see if there is a hatch for a cabin air filter. If there is not a hatch, you don’t have one. Amazon sells aftermarket hatches if you want to cut a hole and add one. Several people have reported that it’s an easy process.
I have a 2003 Silverado, Any idea why our heater or ac has very little air flow….I was hoping it was in need of a cabin air filter….and once changed I would be back in business
@MaryAlice McCrae Hi MaryAlice! Chances are you have some kind of blockage. Another truck owner noted here a week or so ago he took his blower case apart and found a rats nest inside. Others have reported they cut the bottom of the blower case and added an aftermarket hatch cover. Inside they found a filter that was not designed to be removed, which was clogged. They pulled that out, put a new filter in and closed the hatch to better airflow. Not everyone who has added the hatch has reported the permanent air filter finding so I’m not sure if that’s common.
@Follower of Christ I’m pretty sure that they stopped putting cabin air filters in the Avalanche after the 02 model due to a redesign of the blower housing. I did a quick search on the Avalanche forums and that seems to be correct. You can add one if you cut a hole in the bottom of the assembly and purchase a aftermarket door from Amazon.
Lol, I have replaced many cabin air filters over the years. I just bought a 2004 and went to replace the filter only to find it didn't have one, LoL. I'm good with that, I usually just takes them out and run no filter
Crap!!! I was looking and didn't see anything. My AC stinks horribly when it's first on last about 30-40 like old sweaty feet. Was hoping my cabin filter was dirty lol. Thanks man
Frank, there is an aftermarket kit in the description and pinned at the top of the comments, that will allow you to get the dirty feet smell out and add a filter.... but it’s a pain to install I understand....
Then why is mine having restrictions when it comes to air, it’s a 2005 GMC Sierra slt and it’s got restricted airflow on the passenger side so there’s got to be one
@Viper2005mdc Seems like if there was a filter and it was clogged it would restrict airflow on both sides. Maybe a clogged or disconnected duct? You can always add the aftermarket hatch and be sure there is no filter in the case?
lol…. Too late. I was changing the jump seat to a center console in my 03 Tahoe. I ordered this cabin air filter from rockauto months ago to find out it doesn’t need one!😢
@dollabillbrunson8107 I think it would - GM was clear about dropping the filter in those models but the parts supplier never updated their books. And you can buy the trap door kit on Amazon to add the filter to your vehicle. You have to cut the plastic to add the door, then then one you have would fit. Crazy I know.
@Mike Genesis I think there might be some filtering material there but without cutting out the bottom of the case and adding the aftermarket door (noted in pinned comment) there is no way to access and replace whatever is in there...... that’s my guess anyway....
@Vehementthepoet Many, many of us have bought the ‘correct’ filter at the store only to find there was no place to install it. Lots of disassembling and reassembling of dashs and kick panels for no reason .
Hi, thanks for the video. Does this also include the Yukon SUV's? My setup looks just like the one you have and I couldn't find the filter for the life of me. It is a 2006 Yukon Denali. Thanks!
2003 gmc sierra...canada model.... i have a slot for it....same metal screw as the resistor pack..... a small door w/weather stripping.....lotsa crap came out of there....
God damnit. First I find out after 20 minutes of looking for my fuel filter that on my make/model it’s “Un-Serviceable”. So I buy some cabin air filters and find this out after 30 minutes of ripping my glove box/kick panel apart.

Would the same be for an 2003 Chevy Avalanche?
@Follower of Christ I’m pretty sure that they stopped putting cabin air filters in the Avalanche after the 02 model due to a redesign of the blower housing. I did a quick search on the Avalanche forums and that seems to be correct. You can add one if you cut a hole in the bottom of the assembly and purchase a aftermarket door from Amazon.
Lol, I have replaced many cabin air filters over the years. I just bought a 2004 and went to replace the filter only to find it didn't have one, LoL. I'm good with that, I usually just takes them out and run no filter
J. Kelsey Rogers I hope you found out there wasn't one before you ripped your under dash apart! :)
Much appreciated. Thank you..
@Kraig Stenberg My pleasure, glad it was helpful! Thanks!
Dude thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Hahahah damn I took my everything old just to see this videos lmao ok definitely taking it to a shop
@yennifer cortez It’s a surprise for sure!
I appreciate that was helpful
Having trouble for my 2012 silverado LS model 4.8 I removed the bottom but it looks completely different. Someone.. anyone?
Wish I could offer some insight @Ace Boogie, but I’m still driving my old truck. Hopefully someone with newer rigs will reply.....
@@DougForce its koo. Thanks anyways brotha
Jist bought one made for the truck at Napa. Not sure how they found it but will be returning it now 😂
@Stephan Edmonton That’s aggravating they they don’t update their books for non used parts.
Does this go for the 03 Chevy Silverado 1500 as well?
Yup, the Sierra and Silverado have basically the same set up
Yes indeed, as Jas said....
Did you find where the blinker fluid is?
@John Bryant I couldn’t find that stuff either! Lol
I have an 03 silverado was gunna change it seens ur video but im getting a bad dust smell when heat is on.
DoitallDavey There are retrofit kits on Amazon. You have to cut a hole where the filter should go but it’s an option.....
Hey nice video but does that include Avalanche? I own an 06 Avy Z71. I'm guessing no cabin air filter too?
I’m not sure about that one, but it seems likely. Take a look under the dash. If you don’t see a removable door, applies to you too.
lol…. Too late. I was changing the jump seat to a center console in my 03 Tahoe. I ordered this cabin air filter from rockauto months ago to find out it doesn’t need one!😢
@dollabillbrunson8107 Hate to hear that! Maybe you can find someone who can use it!
@@DougForce May it will fit an 02 Tahoe. I just find it strange that they have one for that year and it doesn't take one. Smh
@@DougForce it’s an old car…I’m good on that. Between cutting and rusting, I won’t have a truck left!
Thanks
@richardgeister5423 Glad it was useful to you!!
I removed the resistor. When i put my finger inside the slot i can feel a something damp that feels like a filter
@Mike Genesis I think there might be some filtering material there but without cutting out the bottom of the case and adding the aftermarket door (noted in pinned comment) there is no way to access and replace whatever is in there...... that’s my guess anyway....
thanks brother
Soooo… how come they sell them for these years then?
@Vehementthepoet Corporate inefficiency-no one bothered to tell the filter manufacturers and they never updated their records. Very frustrating.
@@DougForce damnit, okay thanks for the knowledge
@Vehementthepoet Many, many of us have bought the ‘correct’ filter at the store only to find there was no place to install it. Lots of disassembling and reassembling of dashs and kick panels for no reason .
You saved me. Thank you!
@Brian Medeiros Glad to hear it helped out! I hope you will consider subscribing!
Yep. Just discovered that. 😂
@billbrasher3437 Hope you didn’t take too much apart before you discovered it?
@dougforce just the cover. But great idea to add one. That’s on my list.
Thanks for the video, ya just saved me a migraine 👍🏼
@dcs2485 Glad to hear it helped out! Very frustrating to disassemble the dash for nothing!
Hi, thanks for the video. Does this also include the Yukon SUV's? My setup looks just like the one you have and I couldn't find the filter for the life of me. It is a 2006 Yukon Denali. Thanks!
I'm not sure about Yukons - this video seems to indicate some do have it... ua-cam.com/video/sJpsi91WePA/v-deo.html
@Michael Brisch I know that frustrated feeling! Sorry you didn’t see the video first!
