Steve Carrell going from non-stop SUCCESSFUL comedic roles to this was fucking mindblowing, his performance in Foxcatcher was absolutely incredible and he DEFINITELY deserves the Oscar for best actor more than anyone...
@@SpikeMichaels ооо
Great acting by Carell , he literally scared me with his fantastic portrayal of this nut. .
Steve Carrell is not going to read this.
squanto2 It's a UA-cam comment, not a personal message for Steve Carell...
*****
I'm Steve's agent here in LA. Steve did get the massage, Over.
Jakey May steve got a massage? thai massage, swedish massage? whatever they all did great jobs, intense film...Mark Ruffalo deserves a nod too.
I concur ...
In my opinion, Steve deserved the Oscar.
And I agree.
An heir to a fortune by Hollywood standards must be evil.
Yah, he probably did. Eddie Redmayne was also really good in Theory of Everything.
I respectfully disagree. A good performance but looking at actual clips, interviews, which there's many of.... Steve spoke, moved, and acted nothing like him at all
Steve Carrell proved without a shadow of a doubt that he's not just a comedic actor, he was absolutely phenomenal in this. He also played a semi serious dramatic role in The Way Way Back as a very mean stepfather and husband which he was also phenomenal in.
I didn't realize it was Steve Carrell till my wife told me. I was shocked. He did an amazing job. I was blown away by his performance.
also little miss sunshine
I just read Mark Shultz said he was spot on in his portrayal. I hope he gets an Oscar nomination.
If anybody told me a year ago that this guy (this guy who is mainly known to be a comedian) would play one of the most scary, unlikable and least funny person I've ever seen on a screen... I would have thought they were talking about a different actor.
Great job, Mr. Carrell! Unbelievable acting...
*****
Was he such a strange guy?
I mean, it doesn't seem to be only Carrell who played him like that, there pretty much seems to be a consencus, that the guy was a very weird... presence.
Freddy Scissorhands just saw this movie lastnite, and steve carell beyond phenonmenal. dark, creepy and very much disturbing.
They say when you do comedy, you can tackle any roll and emotion...Steve Carrell CERTAINLY proved that to be true. He was HAUNTING and such a sad character. If only his character wasn't a murderer I would have felt a lot of sympathy for him (I did most the time until the end and then was disturbed).
***** I agree, Jonah Hill used to kind of annoy me, then in Wolf of Wall Street he was like the shining star!
any comedian can eat a danish croissant but can any comedian tackle the emotion required for the consumption of a french apple strudel
Why do people capitalize words like that? Oo
Eric bana is a case in point. His performance in chopper is brilliant
Channing tatum also did an outstanding job!
His brilliant, creepily menacing, yet understated portrayal of John Dupont is THE most disturbing, unnerving, insidiously menacing thing I've ever seen on film. I felt like I was watching a horror film by the second half (a horror film mercifully devoid of all the terrible cliches of (script, plot, music etc.) that ruin the psychological terror of true horror). Compared with Carrell's Dupont, the chest-burster from Alien looks warm and cuddly!
dancebackthesea Wow that's actually a brilliant compliment. You do feel sympathy for him, because of his mother and excess wealth he probably never had a great chance at living a decent life. At the same time he murdered a great man in cold blood and he really was a ticking time bomb, but most of the wrestlers were probably blinded by the money.
The scene in Alien by the way has to just scare the fuck out of women. Even I'm uncomfortable whenever a pregnant girl asks me to touch their belly.
Yes, he plays him like Norman Bates. If he was that immediately unsettling, nobody would give him the time of day.
Steve Carrell is one of the greatest actors of all time.
I have to hand it to this Steve Carrell I think drama is his true calling. They should give the make-up artist an Oscar. And Steve, they should give you one too. I mean your performance was the best I've seen in many years. And until this movie I really didn't respect you as an actor. Now, I have to give you a standing ovation.
Steve COMPLETELY disappeared in the movie, fucking amazing
Probably already said before but Steve was absolutely exceptional in this film, one of the best acting roles I've seen for a long time
He made the guy so much more creepier
Brilliant performance
His performance was brilliant.
An amazing performance
What a talented guy.
i wish to state on the record that this was a powerful and disturbing film , Steve Carrell , indeed all the performances were great.
It always brings me a lot of satisfaction to see when comedy actors prove time and time again that they can easily transition to dramatic roles. In one of his books Groucho Marx says that critics shouldn't be surprised for that and compares the work put by a comedian when such tasks are being offered to them to having a two weeks paid vacation.
Amazing acting. I was amazed to hear the Steve Carrell was the actor after watching the movie.
What a truly fine actor this is! I wasnt as suprised as a lot of others because of his beautiful performance in Little Miss Sunshine: compliments to you Steve Carell
Just proves how truly amazing Steve is this man never stops amazing me
13th of november is day of death of my grandfather he undoubtedly was a skillful and sophisticated wrestler himself
what a great transformation great acting...I smell an oscar nomination
I was skeptical when I first heard Steve Carrell was playing John DuPont in a true story, but he did a great job of it!
Steve Steve Steve You should have won the Oscar.
Great interview, Charlie Rose! I agree with Steve Carrell --- if you look at the interviews of John E du Pont, he does have a very specific (intimidating way, in my opinion) way of talking to people. I'm glad Steve Carrell is a well read actor that does his research prior to appearing in roles.
Steve Carell is a pretty smart guy.
He's not that pretty.
@lost souls Joseph said he was a pretty smart guy. Smart, yes. Pretty? We like Steve, but he's not Ryan Gosling. (Yes, I was making a joke, lost souls, I know what Joseph actually meant).
When you get right down to it, the core elements of their characters not so much what they did, John Du Pont and Michael Scott are pretty much the exact same person.
That's exactly what I thought when I watched the movie. Well I guess its true, the difference between comedy and horror is just the music (or scene setting to be more precise).
steve carrell nailed the part.really good acting by all three man.
Steve Carell makes some great points here. It is sad though when people who are "peculiar" or "off-putting" looking are isolated due to their physical appearance, and I'm not just talking about du Pont.
I think your logic is reversed. He wasn't isolated due to his appearance, his isolation caused his offsetting appearance.
His physical features were not that strange. Take a picture of DuPont. He really does not look that weird. Maybe a bad haircut haha.
It was his posture, his mannerisms when he was around other people, that was unsettling. That was caused by his isolation.
I understand your point but do not consider my logic reversed. Many people who are "physically unattractive" or even suffer physical ailments struggle with the social world we live in. I believe the logic you cite can work both ways
His posture and mannerisms may not result entirely from isolation either but could be a result of the lack of love in life or just a detached seeming personality.
extraordinary performance by carrel!! well done
I always wondered what Michael Scott has been up to after he left Scranton
BizzyIzzy87 legit became prison mike
saw it two days ago. watching him as du pont made me forget he was steve carrell
Carrell should have won best actor
The about face this man did to take on such a serious role solidified me on believing the Oscars screwed up in not awarding him Best Actor. His performance was nothing short of thrilling and on-edge. I want to see him do more serious roles now that we know he has the chops
Great actors know the backstories of their characters as if they were their own.
who ever knew...that this guy..semi comic..just another out of the bunch..could be that fucking great of an actor???ive watched Foxcatcher ,,and he truly terrified me..,,dont even reconize him as Steve Carrell,,,crazy..this guy should get alot more drama type movies!! Btw... Mark Ruffalo and Channing tatum are also very very good in this one....you can feel the darkness in them trough the whole movie
Very insightful stuff.
The same man that won 1st place at dinner for winners (Dinner for schmucks) now deserve an oscar for his outstanding role in foxcatcher, outstanding acting honestly.
Omg he did a great great job 👏👏
His performance was the scariest thing in movies that year.
I thought the actor just looked a bit like Steve Cerrel at first, but surely not him. Its scary how realistic that makeup thing was. Really perfect job.
Ok, now I have to go watch him getting waxed again, just to lighten things up.
Can't watch this without laughing because of Carrell's voice. Lol. MICHAEL SKARN!!!
Steve Carell WAS John Du Pont. Un-be-lieve-able. Who knew, Michael Scott?
I cant wait to see his next role in Battle of the Sexes!
Carrell's depiction of Du Pont is Oscar winning beyond question....lighter fluff would have undoubtably made the case, but such dark-dank material challenged viewers between throwing up and virigously shouting and applauding...I think
Why wasn't Steve Carell nominated for an Oscar for this role?!?!?!?! He should have been. Excellent job!!!!
Perhaps you meant why didn't he win.
Phila INQUIRER's late great columnist Tom FOX has this guy's # back when the AAU was lionizing him.
I would really be curious if Carrell did any of the physical training, like rolling around with wrestlers, as part of his research for the role. Not sure if Carrell was at all familiar with wrestling, but I'd have to imagine that approaching wrestling from a relatively inexperienced standpoint, would help him get into that outside-looking-in headspace of DuPont.
DuPont was once maybe the wealthiest family on earth
Let's make a movie about Charlie Rose! Bennet Miller should direct it!
Was du Pont ever tested for Asperger's?
2:01 Well, first of all. That's what she said.
I don’t know what we’re whispering about! Quiet noises!
Carell*
He likes lamp
I love Carell. I hope he's nice in real life.
heir of ONE of the many branches of the family
Did Charlie whip his winkie out???
you can at least spell his name right… "Carell" not "Carrell"
He really earned the oscar nomination, but I will also say his portrayal is VERY creepy and unnerving and honestly I think it was a brilliant film but one much like Requiem For A Dream, where I can't really watch it multiple times. John Du Pont was a sick fuck who thought he could buy anything, but obviously he learned he couldn't buy respect.
Watched a couple of videos with du pont and he was a lot less creppy than what comes off in the movie, for one the guy regularly smiles whilst Carrel rarely does so as him, pretty much the opposite. Not to mention the guy did a ton of things not mentioned in the movie, and the wrestling project itself was a lot bigger than what was portrayed. I don't think they did a good job, and i think they went over creepy with the character to try to make the movie more interesting/ackward/funny to match Carrels acting.
*carell
kelly clarkson!!
I thought he did a great job "disappearing" into such a dark character, but he didn't really look or sound all that much like the real John Du Pont. I kept thinking the entire movie that J.K. Simmons would've been a perfect choice.
So he basically played Michael Scott
Du Pont couldve been an inspirational guy for outsiders out there but he just had to do that stuff with Schultz. Thats what you call a "career suicide"
Dude was poisoned by scopolamine. Who knows for how long. He had a Bulgarian prescription for scopolamine and “gave” 80% of his fortune to a Bulgarian wrestler. That’s not a coincidence.
Its like adam sandler after uncut gems
carell looked like he was doing an SNL skit thru the whole movie. cant take this dude seriously.
Great but why play him?
He was great. But I wish he would have lost weight to match DuPont
I don't think Carrell needed prosthetics or makeup at all
or OR ORRRRR, he grew thinking he could as he felt like cuz money. The end
John DuPont was a malignant narcissist, and suffered a narcissistic injury which led to his committing murder. Malignant narcissism is a very serious personality dissorder. I'm surprised Steve Carrell pussy-footed around malignant narcissism in this interview.
Firstutubewatcher No way: Steve did a great job showing a lot of his complexed personality, in a very refined, classy kind of way. Thats called true acting..
jorg1206 Dude, my comment was not about Steve Carell's acting prowess in the movie, my comment was about Steve Carell's assessment in the Charlie Rose interview about John DuPont's personality disorder. Did you even look at the interview?
Firstutubewatcher You are partially right I'm sorry: I was indeed commenting on the acting not so much the interview (I did watch the interview), but to me there seems to be a lot of truth in what Pectoris4 says aswell...
Ihonestly believe that this Foxcatcher character is closer to Steve Carell's real life persona, than say, Michael Scott from The Office US.
Look for any interview with Steve Carell, he seems always moody, pissed, not unfriendly but bored and almost passive agressive. There is definitely a dark side there, and he beautifully manages to hide it in his comedy.
Michael Kupfer Yes I totally agree. Although a lot of comedians try to be serious in interviews, Carell rarely even cracks a single joke in most of the interviews I've seen with him. The biggest irony in comedians is that the majority of them had a rough childhood or are depressed people.
+Daavhimself yeah but he's still a very nice guy I think he's just a private person but at the same time not fake like most celebrities. From most of the office cast they say he is humble
It was a good performance. It wasn’t Oscar level. A bit too caricature, which comedy actors are known for (Jim Carrey). Carell is so innately likable it was a ballsy role for him to take but he overcompensated with a wooden performance.
Listen. I thought Steve was magnificent as well, however I don't think he should've won. If it weren't for the prosthetics, I don't think his performance would have been NEARLY as good. Just my opinion. I still think Keaton should have won though. Redmayne, in comparison to Keaton and Carrell, gave a significantly worse performance.
"he wanted that greatness to rub off on him"..............so when people whine about why this or that sports figure is valued over some writer...(doesn't mean they have less value on the market of THE WORLD), it's because you can see if flat out........they lost or they won.....period. That world will always hold true value or what might call gold value. I'm not pushing some gold standard argument for the record.
he wanted the shortcut........you see it so many times...........money, private or government..........creates "greatness"..........you see it on tv all the time........"what should government do?"......lol
the ultimate problem with an idealist is this...................the dream has huge holes............you'll never find them, because the "answer' never existed. you only remember the parts that you saw.
can't stand him either, but here we go......................RUMSFELD............."WE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WE DIDN'T KNOW".........
His voice gives me the creeps
