John E du Pont video Foxcatcher Farm - 1988

  • This is the infamous John E du Pont! I shot this video in 1988 for an awards banquet. Du Pont donated money to Crozier-Chester Hospital for their new trauma center. The hospital held a banquet in his honor where this video was shown! So if you are going to see the movie... Foxcatcher, you can learn a little about who he was...witness his strange and awkward demeanor...and no doubt compare this to how he is portrayed in the movie! Portions of this video were used by Inside Edition for the story they did in 1996 following the murder of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz.

Demont Washington If he hadn't been rich he probably would have had a more healthy upbringing and thus been much more normal.
He is responsible for his actions, but just about anybody raised so isolated and so rich is going to be messed up and unable to connect with normal people.

esotericVideos being of a lower income wouldn't have mattered much, as studies have shown that the lower you are on the socio-economic ladder, the higher the risk of both physical and mental illness.
however, from what i can understand he had a big drinking problem, and that drinking problem was probably for a reason, so he did it to cope. he probably suffered some trauma in his life, and things turned out as they did.
either way, what i think we all can agree on here, is that this society of our's, sure knows how to fuck our people up good.

I almost feel bad for Du Pont. The wrestling craze was him acting out and unconsciously crying for help. He was a sad lonely man strangled by his delusions. The wrestlers thought he was an eccentric harmless fool and they were only too happy to accept his financial assistance so they could achieve their dreams of success. Who wouldn't? They weren't psychiatrists and tragically how could they know that he was a ticking bomb? It was up to Du Pont to face his issues and but he didn't. He could have saved himself from himself. So although I almost feel bad for him I don't.

Your comment is well observed. The best !
You see in the movie his presentations are through his eyes, his editing, like a political informercial.
And this self promo was probably made when he was somewhat rational, and before the chronology Foxcatcher covers.
I'm curious to know if Mark Schultz's displeasure with Bennett Miller portrayal of him
And the innuendos is current or his reaction when the movie first came out.
I empathize with mark Schultz though, he was in Villanovas wrestling program, he says that's why he came out to foxcatcher.
Obviously there are dramatizations based on true events.

I was so moved by the way Steve Carell portrayed John du Pont that in the middle of it I googled JdP. Wow, I knew SC could act but seeing this video makes me appreciate him at a whole other level. It is so easy to act out the character as a caricature and, in the case of JdP, it would have been very easy to play him in such a way. Had that happened, so much would have been missed in terms of seeing the deep lessons JdP's life provides as it wove in and contrasted against the lives of Dave and Mark Schultz.
At the heart of it, is the heart of it. For all the wealth and luxury that the du Pont's were living in, the mother and son were incapable of truly experiencing love for themselves or each other. The Schultz had what the du Ponts were missing in their life -- unconditional love for each other. The du Ponts had what the Schultz were short of in their life -- economic support.
It is fascinating to watch how authorities/military personnel were willing to accept and kowtow to the behaviour of JdP bec of all the money he was pouring into their pockets. Any other individual who behaved anywhere near how JdP behaved would be put in his place or ignored or locked up in an institution. It is very obvious JdP had the emotional intelligence and maturity of a seven year old child; he was childish, NOT child like. It is also quite clear that his own mother was not very emotionally intelligent nor mature herself -- she could not love her son for exactly the way he wanted to be. The scene where they talk about JdP's train set and what to do with it was an incredibly powerful statement about the majority of how most parent-child relationships are. Parent wants child to be X and child wants parent to be seen and accepted as Y. Each one demanding their worth be given by the other.
#channingtatum, #markruffalo and #bennetmiller, #thankyou for this absolutely unforgettable movie. Amazing work .

I heard about this case as a kid, and seeing it now after everything I've learned in life is that this man's story is a deeply sad indictment on both the way society still marginalizes and virtually ignores mental illness, and how vulnerable and sycophantic people are by nature. One of the most important things people need is other people, and to realize that in order to have friends you have to have money. Hardship can happen to anyone, and it's terrible the way it alienates friends and loved ones when their love and support are needed the most. Most people see a creep here, but I see a person with a disability who no one with the authority to intervene cared about enough to at least try to learn what to do to help him and thereby save others. I see it all the time ...sad.

+Bikewithlove You should know that in interviews when he was promoting the movie, Steve Carell held the same opinion about John du Pont as you do. He mentioned thinking that he found it heartbreaking that he had no true friends to help him out, and that everyone was turning a blind eye to his mental illness. When you watch the movie Foxcatcher, I think it shows that he played du Pont with a lot of sympathy.

Bikewithlove if we only had more people like you in this crazy world! People are so quick to demonize the guy, but the hard, sad truth is in the foxcatcher tragedy it was certainly no winners! Of course my heart goes out to the Schulz family! I cannot even wrap my mind around the pain that's been brought to bear in that family, but it's such a travesty for the Dupont family as well, certainly in very different ways, but tragic and devastatingly sad as well! More awareness definitely needs to be allotted to the crippling effects and manifestations that are entailed in the mental diseases worldwide.

Ok, so I watched Foxcatcher and thought for sure Steve Carrell was WAY too creepy. No way was the real John Du Pont this much of a creep. After watching this I realized I was wrong - he's ever creepier! Carrell did a great job though. They got his look down very well in Foxcatcher and Carrell got his mannerisms down very well.

What a sad tragic finish to a man who was so desperate to fit in. But nowhere near sadder than Dave Schultz's families loss. A tragic story

So Dave Shultz kept his family there 8 years after his brother Mark left? In those 8 years he had zero concern for the welfare of his family?

I had to see this after watching FOXCATCHER ..which was a really great drama movie..a compelling story & really didn't notice at first that Steve Carell portrayed Du pont... Wow... .. I do believe that there was definitely same bloodline marriages going on in the Du pont family tree.

He sounds like such a cool guy in this video , its cool that there was so many videos made with John , to see his psychoness

So you’re assuming he had no drugs in his system at the time of Dave’s murder? Is this a proven fact?

The fact that he comes off so creepy in scripted filming is unsettling at best. He must have seemed a hundred times more awkward in real life.

Just finished watching Fox Catcher. The movie and acting was very well done, but it was sad and tragic story.

Thanks for the video. Very haunting seeing this right after the film. I don't believe Steve Carrell managed to capture the real John at all. John seemed more alive, didn't freeze in that weird look "up" from the movie, and even his nose seems quite ordinary and well within the usual variations found in people, not at all as big as portrayed in the film.

Not to mention if ppl do their research, They will find the movie was flawed. For the fact that Dave and Mark were NEVER at the farm at the same time.

@@iluvtriggeringpeople7so Mark left Foxcatcher in 1988 but Dave stayed up until his death in 1996? Is that correct? 8 years living under Jon Du Pont without any concerns for the welfare of his family? When did Dave move his family there & why did they stay for so long if there was clear evidence that Du Pont was unpredictable?

If you really want to understand who the Schultz brothers are and really what Mark thought and thinks of John du Pont you have to read the book Foxcatcher. Great book!

What did Dave think of John I wonder. He stayed on his property for 8 years. Must not have thought too badly of him…

It's weird this is so errie and surreal on its own... I thought Foxcatcher exaggerated his strangeness a bit... but after watching this I don't think they went far enough!
