Only current and former KLR owners can truly appreciate what it must have been like to spend that amount of time on that machine. I did a 400 mile weekend once and made the mistake of riding 70-75 mph for almost the entire trip. The unpleasantness and pain from the high frequency buzz through the handlebars took days to recover from. Well done.
Congrats. The legendary KLRs are as indestructible as they come. Apparently, so ate their riders. When I was 50 years old I my have been able to pull this off but only with the perfect rode bike and plenty of preparation. Today, at 67, and in modest health at best, I ride 100-150 miles on Sundays and count my blessings. My current ride is a 2022 BMW r1250gs. That bike has allowed me continue a passion I've had for 53 years. I'll leave the "real" riding to you youngsters. Appreciate the great story. Be safe.
nothing short of Awesome. Give yourself a pat on your back. Your 50th BDay and a 1000 mile/1600 KM trip in less than 24 hrs...on a KLR 650.....a moment in time and memory not to many people can attest too. Congrats and well deserved🙌🙌
i always looked up to my elders, and i'm glad to be a young owner of a '99 KLR 650! I've owned an FZ6R, GSXR 1000, VTR1000, Virago 1100, but this bike just feels special. It's so fun yet there's nothing fun about it...
I totally get it. I did the SS1000 on a 2018 KLR650 in October, 2018. I got up, left the house in New Braunfels, TX at about 3:00 am, and rode to my aunt and uncle's house in Hot Springs, AR for lunch, then returned home. On the way home, it was late and the gas pumps at a couple gas stations weren't printing receipts and the stores were closed, so no way to get receipts from an attendant. All that to say I couldn't get the verification I needed to get the official certificate from the Iron Butt Association. But it's okay because I did it to prove to myself that I could, and I know I did it. My bike was totally stock. I do think I was also wearing the bicycle shorts. I was definitely saddle sore for a couple days. Congratulations!
You don't need to prove anything to anyone, what matters is that you did it. Keep riding and enjoy leaving all your worries behind, because that's really what it's all about.
From a ‘22 KLR owner, this is a monumental task! I put 860mi in a weekend to go look at a trailer with stock sprockets and tires, and I know how sore I was after that one. Maybe some day I’ll try to get certified but I’m going 16/42 and ditching the knobbies first!
Drove from South-Norway to Dresden(Germany) and then to Nürnberg because of my ETW Exam in less then 24h. I will never do this again. Needed like 2 Days of Sleep afterwards
Congratulations. I did the IronButt Ultimate Coast to Coast from Key West, Fl to Prudhoe Bay, AK years ago on a GEN 1 KLR 650. Great bike, and unstoppable. I missed that bike so much I picked up a Brand New Gen 3 KLR 650 ABS this past Saturday. Only 100 mi so far, but the KLR has only gotten better, now with Fuel Injection and ABS.
I applaud you! I'm currently looking at doing a SS1000 after an ill timed conversation with a deer stopped my preparations last time I was training for an attempt
Well, done, good and faithful KLR Rider! that’s kicking some butt. I especially like the quote. BECAUSE IT’S THERE… it’s all about the Ride, and the mindset. Have owned Two KLR 650’s both with well over 70, 000 miles on the clocks… The bikes are truly good and Faithful machines. I watched your video twice, truly enjoyed the mannerisms, and the sincerity of the ride. I’ve subscribed to your channel and now it’s time to get caught up. peace to you this day. Be safe out there, and enjoy life to the fullest.
@marissakphotography6604 I have a '22 KLR Adventure model with 22,300 miles. I shoulda had 26,000+ but a young lady put me in a hospital. She failed to yield to me and my KLR. I was out of commish 2 months, but riding again. KLR's can hang.
Well done! I did the same run back in 2017 on my GL1500 Gold Wing that I had purchased a week earlier. Loved the video. I ride those roads every summer. We really do live in a beautiful part of the world. 😊
Well done Sir!!! So few people anymore understand and appreciate the effort of pushing out against our limits and finding the edges. For some, it's the challenge and bragging rights, for others, it's spiritual. Regardless of the motivation, it's the journey not the destination. Fantastic accomplishment. You got a sub
Congrats, and happy birthday! The longest I've ever ridden in a 24 hour period is half what you did, and on a cruiser. I was absolutely ready to get off and find the nearest beer. I can't imagine the mental fortitude needed to take a KLR 650 that far in 24 hours. I salute you!
Kudos to you! I hadn't quite managed 1k miles in one go on the klr despite getting really close (probably 950ish miles at near 15 hours) and I remember that night being the best shower and sleep I had ever gotten. The only reason I stopped early was I didn't know of the challenge and I only did it to move states 😅! Seriously though, amazing job with the run!
Total respect! I just last week drove Seattle to Grand Tetons to Jasper, back home through Clearwater and Hope. Most beautiful drive I've ever done over much of your route. As a former KLR rider, WOW! I intend to do a similar trip back to Jasper on my SuperTenere, but over 4 days with plenty of stops. Nicely done, happy belated birthday~👏🎉
I rode my Suzuki sv650 from up in Washington state to South Padre Island in the last week in October. 3 thousand miles in three days. Much of that ride was in sub freezing temperatures in the dark. I spent a week in recertification classes and headed back home. I took a week and a half getting back home in early November.
Congratulations. I really enjoyed this. It does not matter what you ride, as long as we have fun. I am planning on doing it on a Cam-Am Spyder. Cheers from Swede in Mexico
A saddlesore is an impressive feat on its own, but to complete it on a KLR 650 as an awe inspiring accomplishment that can only be described as a modern Viking saga. Well done; a lot of respect to you. Also, the scenery is amazing.
Congratulations awesome effort buddy. I have done 4 myself, and those that know, realise how much grit and determination this takes. Welcome to the IronButt Club ❤
Congrats and welcome to the Saddle Sore club....it is a marathon indeed but the excitement of the prize keeps you going. I would never pick that bike for that task, but hey, looks like it can be done.
Congratulation with your Iron Butt. Join the select club. I did my IB 1706 km from Serbia to Belgium in 18 hours with my FJR at average 150 km/h , extra stops for only 5 minutes every hour. Messed up my 2000 km in same drive....had 6 more hours to spend to get it.... Very difficult to perform this today as everywhere in Western Europe you have speed traps with nice fines attached. All the best to all new members and members to come
I just rode my KLR for the past 3 hours here in the Ottawa area and my butt is sore, I can't imagine doing that ride. I have done it by car however, well only half Prince George to Vancouver only.
Congratulations! Thanks for sharing the video. Very admirable 50th birthday goal! Iron buts are too difficult for me. I plane on doing bay area California to New York and back for my 50th b day. Pat yourself on the back. 💪
Nicely done. Iron butt is a piece of cake on a KLR. I did it on my 2018 a couple of times. I just took my breaks when I stopped for fuel which was roughly every 225 miles. I'm planning to buy a 2025 KLR as soon as my local Kawasaki dealer gets them in and I'll probably do an Iron Butt to break it in amd then I plan to see how fast I can do the So-Cal and Nor-Cal BDRs (I'm a former MX, enduro, and supermoto racer so I get throttle happy in the dirt)
@@jeremiahjolley7894 I'll keep that in mind! I just got my new KLR on Tuesday. Starting to set it up. I just put a Tusk skid plate and some Nelson Rigg luggage on it. Gonna be getting crash bars for it soon too. Can't wait to get it all ready to rock and roll
Strong work! I made 860 miles in Texas on my gen 2 KLR and got stomped on by sideways rain and high winds. Lots of lightning, looked cool on the GoPro but stopped me right there. Another near thousand mile trip was cut short in Casper Wyoming due to the crosswinds.
Congrats !! I did my saddle sore in my mid-50s... my bike was more highway oriented than yours, but such a trip still wears on the rider -- I was fuzzy-headed enough with about 100 miles to go that I stopped for gas and forgot to put the kick-stand down... the embarrassment was an adrenaline rush... at that point I took an extended break (caffeine and sugar snack) and finished without further drama. I got in the habit of longish runs (without the IBA records keeping... 🤣) for almost 15 years, habit forming... but have slowed a tad now...
Kudos, I can't say I'm ready for an iron butt in my motorcycling journey and you did an amazing job responsibly explaining the experience with the respect it deserves. I feel like I could sniff the iron butt but that last leg is going to be the killer. I feel like the second wind would come mp 500-650 and you'd be running on fumes by the end. Like I've done and can continue to do 600 miles in a day and not break a sweat, but to do it twice....in under 24.....
This is fantastic. Thank you. Wait I wrote that before you were done. It got better. I have been on the fence for a KLR in one moment or another since 1988. More times recently after that long corporate dance. When mountain bikes convert to motorcycles because it is time to eat shit less and ABS, better helmets and leathers and driving around and no not motocross. I suppose it is time and Kawasaki should be paying you. My friend I really appreciate the video.
I did 875miles in 19hours on drz400. Never ever again. It wasn't official 1000 iron butt, then in my home state at 2 am I got pulled over because of missing tag(covid, lost it in 20+ days ago and filed a report, no DMVs open in different states), and decided to call it a day. It was a good choice.
I did an iron Butt run from Dallas Texas to California twice back in the early-mid 80's. I hadn't even heard of an iron butt run at that time, first time on a Suzuki 750 & the 2nd on a Harley super glide ( I was in my early -mid 20's ) I haven't road a bike in 40 years until I got my gen 3 KLR last year...... I don't know if my old butt could handle that on my KLR , However this video is inspiring to say the least. I might try Dallas to Mt. Rushmore to see how I do , I'd have to go pre/post Sturgis as I wouldn't want all of the Harley riders to feel inferior to the KLR & someone riding their bike as opposed to trailering it to the destination 😬
I did, the Iron butt, but not intentionally, I rode from Vero Beach, Florida, To Weston, Georgia (USA) for my annual Pecan Pie Run, On a 2007 Yamaha Venture Pulling a Large Matrix Rover Trailer., stopping at my favorite place for a BBQ lunch, across the National parks to Eastern Florida Coast, then south back home. did 999.7 miles in 23:47 ( I was streaming at the time) and my friend said get back on your bike before the 24 hr mark, for an Iron Butt certification. (so I did) 1002.6 miles. ( Never sent it In. didn't really care about bragging rights) just to epees him, another ride on the same bike & trailer was 1288 in 28:55 from Hutto Tx ( on all Back roads) to Vero Beach.) Now that was a LONG frigging ride. ( Now picking up a 2024 KLR 650) to slow down the smell the roses, and go camping.
I have done the iron butt twice once on a vtx1800 and on a 06 goldwing. Now I have a 22klr650 have not thought about a iron butt on it it is a really super bike don't think I'll try that yet
I'm thinking about doing the exact same ride - on a CRF300L. Perhaps the wrong bike, but man what an adventure LOL. I bet I'll have numb hands and feet for a week.
@dirty_destinations_ does the rally have different internal gearing than the plain 300L? Both 6 speeds, but are the final drive figures different, notwithstanding sprockets?
The 1,000 miles is fine but I’d sure take an hour nap at about 750 miles. Army training. I sure wouldn’t want to be drowsy and miss the deer on the side of the road.
Great trip the KLR isn't held in high regard by some , I just bought one a 22 adv , hope to do some trouble free road and trail expeditions , they seem pretty capable definitely not that powerful , like a mule .Cheers .
@@Cobra427Veight thank you. They certainly not fast, but they are reliable and simple. If you haven’t you should watch the two videos @FortNine did on them.
I've never heard of the "IronButt" ride.... is this an organization of sorts, I heard you say you had to submit your info to get the accommodation. That's very interesting. Keep the rubber side down, peace
Yes Sir, learning new stuff each day & I will look it up shortly. I just watched some much younger guys do this trip on much newer/larger GoldWing type bikes..... I left a comment saying that at his age/bike that he could do a, " 1,500 " mile pull being as it's only going 60MPH thruout the trip. Hey, ty for posting up. peace
Good job! Done 2 but on much more comfortable bikes lol. One solo and one with my daughter on the back. First was my kaw 900lt and second victory cross country tour
Congrats! An Iron Butt is a bucket list item of mine. Did you do any prep rides - a 500 miler or more - to give yourself some legs first, or did you just throw it down?
Nope no prep rides. No training. I just mapped it out, figured out what I needed to do to submit my application to the IBA, and spoke a a couple friends that did this run a couple years back. Then I tackled it head on. Mind you I’m a shift working vessel operator in an environment that can make for long days requiring focus and good situational awareness.
Had not heard of iron butt rides. Well done! I’m 68 and returned to riding three years ago. I’m currently reclined on a couch with a heating pad on a lower back ligament. Yup, tried to pick up the 500 lb bike solo. So I think my iron butt days are behind me, spent on the seat of a farm tractor at seeding time. But thanks for letting us ride along. Were you not tempted to take highway 99?
With the 16 tooth on the front it was like it had a 6th gear. And the speedo was almost spot on with the gps. I managed to get her up to 154km but it took a long flat stench to crawl up there once past 140. That said 110-130 was easy and the bike cursed there without vibrating my teeth loose. But, it’s too fast for me in first gear to play at slow speeds so the 15 tooth is going back on.
Happy for you, it’s definitely “a personal thing”. Can’t explain it, don’t need to. Funny thing for “me” is, @ 76 I force myself to slow down now to take a look around and enjoy what’s left of the road? Best to you, Rola (Oregon / USA)👍🏻
The butt burner 1000 is a great challenge. I did 2 back to back. But an ST1100 in parts of the western desert that doesn't enforce speed limits is not the challenge you faced. I want to try a single 1000 on my current bike. A c50 cruiser.
Had a few KLRs but never tried anything like that on one but I did ride 1129 miles (by the odometer) on my goldwing one day. I didn’t do any iron butt paperwork but it was still a pretty cool feeling. Nice job. Keep riding safe.
My first ride on a stock KLR was only 200 miles. My arse was so damn sore!! Lol It made me rethink all my ambitious adventure plans. Alaska to South America was definitely out of the question. Lol
Congrats on your accomplishment! My wife and I are in our 60s, and we completed and got certified on our first Iron Butt ride (a SS1000 and BB1500 combo) a year ago, so we can attest to the difficulty. It definitely takes planning.

If you do decide to try it put on a 16 tooth front!
Fantastic video! Thanks for sharing and ride safe!
Thank you.
My longest ride on Gen3 is from Chicago to Knoxville TN. If I do iron butt, won’t be in July when it’s HOT!
I'm thinking about doing the exact same ride - on a CRF300L. Perhaps the wrong bike, but man what an adventure LOL. I bet I'll have numb hands and feet for a week.
I have a 300l Rally and I’m thinking about next year. But that’s only because the Rally has an over driven 6th gear.
@dirty_destinations_ does the rally have different internal gearing than the plain 300L? Both 6 speeds, but are the final drive figures different, notwithstanding sprockets?
@@mollygrubber yes the Rally’s gear ratios are different. 6th is over driven
If I get one i'm calling it number 7 ( the old mans mules name in the Grizzly Adams tv show) . Also would be my 7th bike .
@@leeinwis that is awesome!!!
I've never heard of the "IronButt" ride.... is this an organization of sorts, I heard you say you had to submit your info to get the
accommodation. That's very interesting. Keep the rubber side down, peace
@@diggy-d8w yes it’s the IronButt Association. Look’em up.
Yes Sir, learning new stuff each day & I will look it up shortly. I just watched some much younger guys do this
trip on much newer/larger GoldWing type bikes..... I left a comment saying that at his age/bike that he could do
a, " 1,500 " mile pull being as it's only going 60MPH thruout the trip. Hey, ty for posting up. peace
Pretty cool.
I’d do any of them, I’m just not interested in racing the clock.
Have to have an iron butt to survive that stock KLR seat.
Congratulations! My butt couldn't take it! 😂
PS: Smashingly good video, voice dubs and great fly over simulations! Thank You!
Congrats beauty route, I wouldn't do an Iron butt but this video sure makes me miss my ol donkey klr, I have the same hjc helmet 👍.
Good for you, well done !!!
Well done !!!!!!
Nice vid bro. Thanks for posting.
This is a dream ride. Well done sir. What helmet are wearing?
It’s an HJC helmet
Well… You’ll never get in trouble by whiskey throttle on a KLR.
I've done a few iron butt's, around 15-16 hrs
What's the difference between this and masochism? 🤔🤔
Is that 24 hours of actual riding or just 24 hours from the moment you start your bike? :O
Edit: Gratz with your birthday!
Just 24 hrs to complete the ride (1000 miles or 1600 km) I did my ride 1741 in 19.25 hrs
Approx 750 miles, 2-up, on a GPZ550, in 13 hours
That’s impressive. How does the klr650 do on the freeway ?
With the 16 tooth on the front it was like it had a 6th gear. And the speedo was almost spot on with the gps. I managed to get her up to 154km but it took a long flat stench to crawl up there once past 140. That said 110-130 was easy and the bike cursed there without vibrating my teeth loose. But, it’s too fast for me in first gear to play at slow speeds so the 15 tooth is going back on.
I did 1,065 (22hrs.) on my 2015 MV Agusta 800 Dragster RR and got my certificate...stock seat no windshield...

What seat was on your KLR? There are many seats, some are better than others. The stock seat isn't good.
@@gymshoe8862 I did that ride on the stock seat.
@@dirty_destinations_ Have you tried Corbin or Seat Concepts? You should.
I miss my Thumper
Did you do any upgrades to the seat?
@@timothytapio4252 nope, plenty of farkles on that KkR but the seat is stock.
It's 100% a mental challenge.
I wouldn't do that ride on a Goldwing much less a KLR. 10hrs is my limit. 😊
Awesome!
Well done kiddo! Great Vid too. Van Isle 1600 you say?
Yup…, that is if’n someone wants to tackle it with me.
@dirty_destinations_ well I'm back in the fall. Just sayin'
@@johnnyg2969 good to know ;)
Not on the stock KLR seat... That thing sucks.. Like the KLR generally does.. Suck..
Difference between what can be done and and and not fun at all
1000 miles in a day...on a KLR. LOL.
all pavement,, ?? ez
Yes all Pavment
Well done man but to be honest I don’t see the point in these iron butt rides, putting yourself at risk
Lads: He’s One Of Us!
Welcome Aboard Sir!
And 🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂
Jim Soque, Long Island, IBA 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0.
Congratulations! I did my 1600km in Poland last year. I agree with everything you've said in the video!
I'm in Vic. Be happy to do the van isle trip...i have a 2024 klr650...
Wow, such a beautiful ride! I would love to try this someday. Thanks for sharing 🏍
