AGGRESSIVE or HORMONAL Hyacinth Macaw?

  • Part 1: • I GOT HELPED!
    Glory is a 27 year old hyacinth macaw whom Caroline took on because a friend's wife is dying of cancer and they begged Caroline to take the bird. She reached out to us for help because Glory was attacking her other birds, destroying her home and becoming incredibly possessive of Caroline's attention and affection.
    After just a bit of time with her and Glory to watch them, we noticed a TON of hormonal triggers in the mix (not to mention, it's spring time!)
    PLEASE make yourself aware of hormonal triggers. They can be different from bird to bird, but there are some more obvious and universal signs too.

      I've none stop commented on Caroline videos about proper training and the hormonal stress she is putting her birds. And instead of reading the advise she makes another video about how she deals with "Haters". Glory is 100% trainable its just Caroline that is messing up the training (she even made a video saying she was getting rid of glory! after only a month of having her!) Honesty I feel bad for glory, having an owner that is more interested in views than the well being of her birds) I don't hate Caroline I have just lost all faith in her as a "Professional parrot trainer"(as she calls herself)

    I actually had unsubscribed from Caroline because I was getting frustrated at the way she treated Glory; it was very obvious Glory thought and behaved Caroline as her mate, but instead of realizing this, Caroline just decided Glory was too aggressive and blamed her behavior on Glory's previous owner, implying he was abusive towards Glory when he was not. On one hand, it was somewhat understandable; Caroline's other parrots did not show hormonal behavior towards humans, only other parrots, so Caroline was inexperienced with a bird that found humans sexually attractive. On the other hand, she made a video saying she was going to sell Glory despite the fact that the bird was given to her for free! by someone who trusted her to give her a good life. I said as much in several of her videos and as a final straw. I don't know if she just missed my comment because I was the only one or if she just wasn't listening and had made her mind up (a bad habit of hers) but here we are. And I don't even own birds (yet), I just had watched enough videos from around birdtube to figure out that hey, if a bird constantly wants to be on you, gets aggressively jealous of other birds, and screams when you are absent - yeah that bird most likely thinks you're her mate.
    I'm glad Caroline decided not to sell Glory (which would have DEVASTATED her) and finally listened that Glory was not a problem bird, she was just getting the wrong signals.

      I had seen a video of hers where marlene visited her house and I was surprised at the chaos/easily was able to observe she was petting her bird in all the wrong ways. I'm also surprised that considering all the birds that she has that she wouldn't know these things, its shocking and scary to realize people have all these parrots but don't actually know that they require 12 hours of sleep or to not give them soft warm foods (I felt like these were basics) and for someone to own the number of parrots she does I would've expected more experience.

    • @unicornwizhez4115
      @unicornwizhez4115 4 роки тому +6

      I’ve seen a couple of her videos and despite her own “human training” even I don’t think parrots are really her thing :/ whether she wants it to be or not. Until consorting with bird tricks, at times it seems like she has had no prior experience or research before or during having them and has just been winging it the whole time. And honestly.. just her in general bugs me
      I remember her video titled people trying to steal my macaw and it was her macaw flying up into a tree her pretending he wasn’t hers and trying to coax the other people into getting him down like.. why? 🤦‍♀️

    • @Bullen_3
      @Bullen_3 4 роки тому +5

      @@unicornwizhez4115 I agree. For one thing she has no clue on parrot body language and has 2 of the largest beaks of the parrot world basically in her face a lot of the time. And she communicates to all 3 of her macaws that she is their mate. And often she shoves them together when they don't want to be near each other. It's a recipe for disaster. As a matter fact Glory bit a hole in Love's beak,when she put them together in a crate. It is baffling that she didn't know any better,when she saw how aggressive Glory was, and knew she was used to being by herself with the other ppl for so many years.
      I really feel like you need to be prepared and have the right type of personality to keep parrots esp large parrots. And she doesn't have it.

      27 for Macaw parrots is young-ish middle age. They can live upwards of 60-80 years, though it is common that most pass away around the 50 mark.
      27 years for say, a conure of any kind is typically older. So it depends on the parrot for the age limit.

      Glory was locked up in her cage, behind a closed door for a very long time. Her previous owner didn't give the bird any attention. So this bird stayed in her cage, in her own room, behind a closed door and she screamed for attention. When Carolin picked her up, she has been screaming uncontrollably and constantly since that day. That's all Glory knows how to do. Glory is now afraid of losing Carolin. So she is jealous of even humans. I don't believe it's hormonal. This bird is very scarred and going to take a miracle to fix. Glory would be fine if Carolin had only one bird, Glory and if Carolin could give her all her time.. But that's not gonna happen. Carolin has 5 other birds.

      @@outoftime7740 Giving her all the time the bird wants to have is no solution. There are just so many things to improve there and there IS a hormonal issue, nobody can deny it. It's definitely doable to make Carolin a good bird Trainer and Glory a bird without behavorial issues since it's very obvious, that Glory thinks that Carolin is her mate. After or if they solved that problem their situation will improve.

Pretty sure they already trained birds like Glory. And that she is so jealous and wants Carolin for her own is the result of making the bird think you are his partner. Now if she stops triggering the hormonal behaviour and with Jamie's and Dave's help Glory will be as great as all the other birds Jamie and Dave trained. Whatever. Sometimes with a language barrier too many words is simply too many words. Would be better to not over explain. You have a willing heartfelt client who only wants to do what’s best. Maybe you just say
      1. 12 hours of sleep,
      2. Correct diet.
      3. Don’t pet your bird like this.
      4 we will show you what we want in target practice with our bird.
      5. set her up for success. Do it indoors, make sure bird is hungry.
      Not ok to blame student for not understanding unclear over explained directions. You said bird was tired so wait.
      When the student doesn’t understand it is always laid at the feet of the teacher. The teachers job is to figure out what the student is understanding and help them. You did great by waiting to regroup.

After watching another video from the place where I am going to be adopting my bird, I was so confused. That video stated that in nature birds don’t always get 12 hours of sleep. But after watching this video, I finally get it! It’s tricking them into thinking it is not the season for mating! Therefore, they do not get hormonal! 🤦‍♀️

    I leave the curtains in the birds room so that get the natural cycle of light. I thought that this was a good thing... wrong. In the Spring and Summer, I guess that I need blackout curtains or shades so they will be able to get 12 hours of sleep. Right?

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  5 років тому

      NikkiPog4444 if it’s working for your birds then don’t change it necessarily - birds ideally need 12 hours of sleep but ours also go outside during the summer. When there’s a hormonal issue the sleep is very important as it plays a huge role. Also it seems this has been a lack of sleep issue for a long period of time so it’s having negative effects on Glory.

    So, I have a question. You guys are obviously busy and your birds aren't out all the time. I work and don't currently have anyone at home to spend time with my IRN until I get home, so he's in his cage for 8 hours. We have really good training times when I'm home and have made progress. What I want to know is do you leave foraging for pellets in for your birds when you're gone, before you come home and can do training with them? My IRN isn't hormonal and willingly goes into his cage for his pellet dinner before bed, but I'm wondering if I should be putting foraging toys in there along with his breakfast (he's still not 100% comfortable with my hands, so I don't want to invade his space more than I have to right now) so he can forage while I'm at work and then we do training when I come home, dinner, bed. He's such a small bird and it doesn't take much to fill him up, so I want to make sure I leave enough in there to keep him entertained, but so he's not full when I come home and it's time to train. I think my question is really just: thoughts? Lol. You guys are awesome. Thanks for being you.

    I need help. I understand this isnt a recent video, and i did watch this when it came out but i wasnt aware of the issue at the time, i stopped stroking my bird and all that right away, when this video came out though. Im so frustrated and do not want to just scream at my bird, im a new bird owner and i was aware of hormones but wasnt aware of what triggered them. When i first started out (before this video came out) with my bird, i used to cuddle and stroke my bird like a dog or cat. You have no idea how much i regret that now. Ive been feeding my bird fresh vegies, sprouts and a healthy pellet ever since i got him. He will get egg or some sort of protien once a week, with a grain a couple times a week. Fruit in his morning salad about 2-3 times a week and its only the smallest bit of fruit. Seeds and nuts as treats. He is a green cheeked conure. He is not territorial but will attack me (and bite damn hard). He mainly attacks if i show attention to a toy with a bell (i guess it sounds like another bird or something) - so i have stopped giving him bells but sometimes he will attack with just a normal toy, with no bell. If he sees me try and put a toy in his cage, all of a sudden its like he thinks that im spending time with that toy and he will attack the toy and myself. He has always had the full 12 hours sleep, no less. I tried to train the retrieve and i was using a plastic pony bead, he knows many other tricks too such as touch training, recall, stationing, the wave, shake, turn around, step up, perch, flip around the perch and roll over. But i tried to teach him to go fetch the bead and he was doing really well with it actually, he would go and pick up the bead but didnt understand to bring it back. This morning I started training him to bring it back (to be fair ive only tried today to teach him to bring it back) but he all of a sudden started attacking me, the bead was too small for him to attack but he sure did try. He almost drew blood. I didnt know what to do so i just started yelling and then got up and walked away. He continues to do this every time i try and train him to fetch. I eliminated everything to make him feel hormonal a long time ago, but he still sees me as his mate. Im so frustrated and i dont know what to do to stop this aggressive behaviour, i would love if yoy could do a video on how to deal with a hormonal parrot? or just give me a brief run-down here? Thankyou so much for all the infromative videos. And just your amazing personality, you have helped me train my bird so many tricks and you have also helped me so much with just bird care.
