    The Pantanal in central South America is the world’s largest tropical wetland, home to an astonishing variety of unique flora and fauna. One of its most striking inhabitants is the blue-feathered hyacinth macaw. As well as being the world’s largest flying parrot, these macaws run a unique seed-distribution service that keeps the rainforest flourishing. But a catalogue of threats - from illegal wildlife trade to human encroachment - have made these forest gardeners endangered. And now they’re also facing fire . . .

    Did you know that it takes around 100 days for Hyacinth Macaw chicks to reach a size that will allow them to leave the nest?
    Until then, their parents have to bring them palm seeds to eat. Nice "room service" right? 😉

    So this has kind of blown my mind. All kinds of animals unintentionally disperse seeds, but I had no idea there was a parrot smart enough to do it *deliberately*. That's staggering. Why am I just now hearing about this?

      Even lesser parrot intelligence is staggering, look at budgies. If you want a pair or even a tiny flock of 6, they’re easy maintanence emotionally but high maintenance cleanly speaking and food wise. Even if they don’t step on your finger or interact with you, they really do behave interestingly. If you feel responsible enough, get some. Make sure you let them fly out the cage daily as well.

    • @MrBurndonesinkchair
      @MrBurndonesinkchair 3 роки тому +13

      It’s not deliberate. The mandibles, the mouth, tongue, beak; at best they can retain only 50% of what they’re trying to eat, with the other half falling to the ground below. It’s a feature analogous to The Origin of Species.

    • @drakke125Channel
      @drakke125Channel 3 роки тому +4

      i highly doubt much of it is intentional for most animals save for a few like the macaws, seeing how wasteful food dropping is a shared trait among various species and classes of animals. They def been spreading seeds intentionally for thousands of years for sure because this has been ingrained in them. Certain behavior and memories are supposedly passed down.

    They are very intelligent modern dinosaurs are they infact aware what they are doing by purposely dropping seeds ?
    1. They have long lifespans
    2. Memory and intelligence are synergistic.
    3. Trees are their environment so they will certainly remember which tree is which in their territory so maybe they are creating more food sources and homes for other members of Their species.

    Some of the birds in this video were actually lear’s macaws (I’m not sure if that’s how you spell it) but anyway they are really similar to hyacinth macaws

    • @macawlovers1964
      @macawlovers1964 3 роки тому

      They were all hyacinth in the video. Lears macaws look very similar but there are many differences. From my understanding lears are actually extinct in the wild now
