Man, your video is good, love the clarity of voice and straightforward presentation. Like your humble attitude and most importantly your descriptive coupled with effective speech is just a great combination. Better than some other generalists that just tell you about bar-work, lights and comms, and roof racks etc, but not much detail and definitely not good communication. I'm hoping to see more of your videos and hope you enjoy your 120 which i reckon is one of the best cars that Toyota ever made.
Always good to see some D.I.Y mechanical mods/repairs!, especially when Ive got a 120 and do all of the maintenance, repairs, mods myself too! Keep it up!
I just picked up a stock GX470 in Houston Texas. I am trying to plan what I want to upgrade on it. I'm leaning toward a 2" lift from Dobinson and am hoping I wont need to upgrade the UCA's. I'm also trying to decide between an ARB bumper/bull bar or the Dobinson. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I also am planning to go up to a 33" tire and add a rear bumper to hold the spare tire and extra fuel. Once again, any suggestions on brands for the rear bumper would be appreciated. Thanks for your video! Nice shirt, by the way.
Hi mate, yeah I think the ARB bullbar is the original, and the Dobinson a copy of their design. I would stick with ARB if possible, but if funds don't allow it then any bullbar will be better than none. Rear bar is really such a personal choice, as some will have features that you like and others won't. Here in Aus we have a lot of choices from big companies and small fabricators, but in the US I know you have different options. I really like the Metaltech rear bumper, I think made in Oregon, WA? That might be your most cost effective option.
I contacted ARB and they don't make a direct fitment bull bar for the GX. Some say that it can be modified to fit but I don't know what that might entail. I hear that Dobinsons makes great suspensions and they actually make a bull bar for my GX470, no modifications needed. I don't weld but can turn a wrench so am looking for something i can install.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Planning to overhaul the front and looked for your videos. A couple of questions. Do you recommend replacing the bushes and ball joint of the lower control arms? As it is not my intention to replace the LCA, however will replace the UCA for an adjustable one.
Hi mate, thanks for the feedback. I would just replace the LCA as a whole unit, then you get new bushes and ball joint. Usually more cost effective to do so as well. You can just replace the bushes, but the LCA has to be removed from the car, and genuine bushes can be pricy ($100 each!) and the ball joint will also be up there. Check out replacement LCAs from reputable companies, and then it should be a much easier install for you.
I've recently purchased a 120 VX that has a Dobinsons 2 inch lift. The car seems to pull to the right under acceleration and I feel like I'm constantly correcting it. Had a wheel balance and allignment, made no difference. Someone suggested lower control arms / bushes may be worn ... any thoughts?
Yeah LCA bushes are pretty common, and will cause that Torque steer effect under acceleration. I'd also check your rear upper and lower control arm bushes for exess wear, as the rear diff may be getting pulled to one side. Enjoy the 120!
Hi mate, the UCAs are from a company called PSR in Australia. I've just had a look and it seems they have updated their design to something more tubular rather than the square shape mine were. Still adjustable and super strong, I'd give them a go.
Hey mate amazing work I watch all Ur videos like them I have been checking on my shocks and by mistaken I opened up the top shocks nut rather then taking all out now I don't know how to put it back together with out having to taking out out all the way wich I cant do the bolt nut under the lower ball joint has been stuck so I will have to take to Toyota but I though if I could just push the shocks back up some how and put the nut back on it any suggestions cheers been stuck for 2 days
Привет. Можете дать ссылку на комплект подвески который вы установили на свой авто? Hello. Can you provide a link to the suspension kit that you installed on your car?
Thanks for sharing your experience. Have you got a Toyota part no's for the upper and lower ball joints? Toyota South Africa telks us we must buy the complete control arms and dont list part no's
Bennie, yes that's correct, Toyota can only sell you the complete arms unfortunately. Years ago I found a genuine lower ball joint on eBay, but I couldn't remember the part number sorry. It's usually cheaper to just replace the factory UCAs when the ball joints get loose. Only $110 a side for aftermarket UCAs with new bushes and ball joints
Nice vid and very informative. Just wondering about those extended ball joint, does it really work? Im on the process of doing similar as yours. Thinking of putting extended ball joint for now or shall i put after market UCA like blackhawk and similar. Any info would be helpful. Ta
Hi mate, thanks for the feedback. I didn't have any luck with the extended ball joints, the camber was horrible and they sat against the coils regardless of wheel height. I know some people run them with a 2" lift with varying degrees of success. For a better and more reliable result, as well as helping improve your camber adjustment, the adjustable UCAs are a much better option.
Anyone with a modicum of common sence would know that a 3''lift is going to affect castor/camber significantly there for requiring control arm adjustability, also I notice you've fallen for the flash looks of the shocks ,you should have chosen one of the proven top brands as you will find out later . The shock absorber is probably the most important choice of all the suspension components fitted to a modified vehicle there for well worth spending top dollar on the best rated brand otherwise you did a grand job .
Thanks mate, yes I did initially try to take the cheaper option with just the extended upper ball joints, but once I actually had everything in I saw I was going to need the UCA upgrade. The adjustment was all done by a 4WD wheel alignment specialist, and the benefit of the PSR UCAs is that they can adjust both the camber and castor with the adjusting bolts on either side. So far I am extremely happy with the Superior Engineering struts and Profender shocks, the quality of each is amazing. Obviously only time will tell, but after 12,000kms in 5 weeks between Perth and Brisbane on unsealed roads and 4WD tracks, they are still in great condition. The only complaint is that the reservoirs on the rear do need some kind of shield to stop rocks from flicking up, and the rear shock guards were shredded from gravel roads pretty quick.
@@trentrapp5071 No worries, yeah I got them on ebay. Just search up "ARB bullbar LED indicator park light" and they should come up. Were around $70 a pair when I got them a few years ago

@@danieljohn589 Yes mate you sure can. Though both the shock and spring will determine how firm the ride is. You could just replace the shocks to see if it fixes it, then if need be replace the springs at a later date
Hi Todd. Love the channel mate. Very informative. I’ve recently done a 50mm lift with Bilstein and Dobbo springs on my petrol 2005 prado. Front is sitting at 820mm. Do you think this is sitting too high and will give me problems such as cv’s or other things? Wanted to get your opinion on this since you know these cars inside out. Would love your thoughts on this.
Hey mate, good to hear from you. Yeah 820mm is a bit high, as long as your measurement is in a vertical line between the bottom of the rim, through the centre of the hub and to the guard. Regular 2" lifts sit somewhere between 780-800mm. If it's only just been fitted, give it a few hundred kilometers to let the suspension settle with the weight
@@James45792 nope, nothing beyond general maintenance. Performance mods do require supporting mods though to make sure it all stays safe and reliable. Eg, 3" exhaust and engine gauges
Thanks mate, really appreciate it. I have made sure to reduce the music volume even further for speaking segments in all my current videos. Cheers for the feedback too!
I think you over reacted with the extended ball joints. They work perfect. Your wheel alignment was WAY off with toe in / out after the huge lift. Camber alone doesn't make that much difference.
The extended ball joints in the stock arms were constantly against the coil no matter what I did. I couldn't even drive it to get a wheel alignment without causing damage. Perhaps it was due to the height of the lift but for my setup they weren't going to work.
