Im going to save homeless hybrid hamster and Im for sure buying this for her. I actually got little too crazy with this cos now Im going to redecorate my whole apartment just to give justice for this amazing cage. Thank you for introducing this for me !
My mums letting me get it! (Last time she said no) I mean I will have to pay for but it's worth it. My mums also make me pay her £10 for her driving to IKEA which is around 40mins away. Can't wait to get the cage and my new hamster (2 robos) . I've spent nearly all of my birthday money on hamster I don't even have yet 😂
I need this for my Syrian, Honey! She'd absolutely love this cage! Sucks that there isn't an IKEA anywhere near where I live... I will be flying across my country where there is an IKEA for my sisters wedding, so maybe my dad will let me get it! My current cage for Honey is about 550 square inches, and I want to majorly upgrade from her module cage. Edit: I'm now a happy owner of an IKEA Detolf as of July 2017!
I'm thinking of buying 2 gerbils and i wanted to purchase a tank that enabled them to have lots of space. This option is more affordable and gives them tons of space to run around. Thank you so much for creating this video, this has saved me so much money!
I’ve had this tank for 5 years now it’s great my gerbils unfortunately started to fight so I split them up I tried introducing them to each other again but no success in the end I just decided to let them be on there own in separate tanks and they seemed happier but now they have passed away :( they lived 4 years now I’m left with 2 tanks that I have nothing to do with so I thought of something why not put the 20 gallon tank on top of this so I built a lid that would support the weight of the tank and WOW it’s awesome I have recently got new gerbils and they love it
Actually, six female mice could very comfortably live in this cage! You could actually put more, but it is not recommended to keep females in groups of more than six as they may began to separate into colonies and fight. Also- anyone planning to use it for mice, they are excellent climbers and you would absolutely need a lid! Hammy lux has an amazing tutorial on how to build one!
I just got my Detolf, and my Syrians love it. The Kallax packaging has a nice thick piece of corrugated cardboard that fits nicely inside this cage which made it easy to turn one end into a nice 10" deep dig box. Kodo loves it, he just burrows in to sleep. Podo is a bit more fancy and prefers sleeping under a bendy bridge.
Is your cage separated because if not you should never keep more than one syrian hamster at the same time that would be very cruel to the innocent hamsters because they will end up fighting and getting hurt and in worst cases even die.
This video was really helpful. I have been planning on getting two gerbils and was looking for a good cage for them. In all the videos about how to care for them, I saw this cage in almost all of the videos. I tried looking up what kind of cage it was with no luck, until one of the videos mention the ikea dotolf. I'm definitely buying this and making the best home for my future gerbils 😊
I watch your videos when I'm sat at my desk jotting down notes and my hamster jimani loves them! He always is sat in the nearest corner of his cage to the phone/laptop! He has become a much happier hamster since I have been using some of your tips! We are getting a detolf cage for him next weekend and he is very excited;D
I bought this and my hamsters love it ...... my dad had to go to ikea so I asked him to pick it up. He had no idea it was glass and carried as if it wouldn't brake. We don't have an IKEA near by so it was in the back of a bumpy for 4 hours. Got it home and had it built and cleaned in less then 20 minutes. So it a short story this cage is great for hamsters and small animals:)
Thank you; very helpful! I was looking for a cage for two mice I am planning on getting, although I am on a budget! I was thinking about getting a crittertrail habitat, but this has much more space and costs only a little more! Thank you again!!!
Thank you so much for this video! I've been looking everywhere to find the perfect set up for my Syrian hamster. This was very informative and helpful :)
Yes! Thankyou so much for this review,Erin! I finally decided that I'm going to get the IKEA Detolf! I will ask my parents if its ok instead of a tank. I have the money and the room for it so hopefully I can DEFINITELY get it!
One con (for me) is that it is made of glass so it is probably heavy and easily breakable but not if you are very careful when moving it or assembling it together! =)
If you have more than one hamster you could split it Or if you want to you can split it and make so you have different parts like A play area, sand bath, digging area or taming area
OMG!! Thank you sooo much for making this video! My mom said that we are defiantly getting the detolf which will be a huge upgrade for two of my four hamsters (my other two already have huge cages over the uk minimum) Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! :D
I've got one coming for my gerbils :) they currently live in a 3ft tank with a homemade upper level... I'm moving bedrooms (into a bigger one) so will be letting them have more space again :) this was a great review & I hope it helps many small animal owners :) xx
You HAVE to make a video on making the lid (ik thesmallpetshop did a tank lid video) but I've never found a detolf lid video and so many people want a video on it for Syrians and gerbils haha :) or if they have cats and such! I can't wait to see how happy your gerbils are in it
I have 3 male gerbils living together and they never fight, in fact they get on really well! I don't think I would have chosen to have 3 gerbils but they were all looking for a new home together and I thought why not :)
I'm buying this today! Hope my hamsters like the big change. I currently have a 12x12x12 cage (they were going to euthanize these two small dwarf hamsters since no one bought them, so I decided to buy them and they are very friendly and adorable. I couldn't afford a bigger cage at the moment).
Oh my god I wish you were my aunt or someone related to me because I just got my hamsters and my mum is over them and you could help me shop for the best hamster things
May I ask if there are gaps between the glass panels? If there are, what do you use to seal them up e.g. to stop bedding escaping through the gaps? I've seen people use aquarium sealant (pet-safe) and was wondering if this was recommended, and whether this should be done as you set up the Detolf or after it's been put together?
Just letting you know that I had this cage for 2 years this Christmas and housed 6 hamsters 4 Syrians and 2 Chinese hamsters at different times of course but last night my Syrian hamster Bambi got between the bar that holds the shelves when I went into my room I saw him and pulled the metal from the glass and got him out but sadly I was to late he was dying and in the next hour he was gone I wish I was there I don't want this to happen to and other hamsters or small animal though my hamsters love this cage I'm thinking of getting rid of it or covering up the bars some way any tips
I'm so sorry that happened, perhaps putting some silicone between the bars and the glass so that it's impossible for anything to get between. The only upside to this accident is that it's very rare, and unlikely to happen again yours is the first case I've personally heard of but adding silicone will certainly give you peace of mind for future hamsters.
I am trying to convince my mom and dad to let me have this cage for my two dwarf hamsters, they will have to be separated with a glass shelf because it is a robo dwarf and a Russian dwarf. By the way thank you for pointing it out that it is an excellent hamster cage; I would have never figured it out by myself!
Nael Alaeddin - yup, I've watched multiple videos because I'm doing research and many videos say that young Syrians need 8 inch ones and adults need 11.
Nael Alaeddin yes, some syrians that are REALLY big may need a 12 inch wheel but that is not very common, just check that the back is not arching, (even if it's arching just a little it's too small) and as i said you will probably not need a 12 inch wheel
I got a new syrian hamster yesterday and she is lovely! I have gotten the Detolf for her and filled it with some toys, food, sandbath and so on but she insists on biting on the metal bars. I can't imagine this to be healthy for her, have you ever experienced this behaviour from your hamsters in the Detolf? I am not sure how to stop her from doing this either.
I love the idea of this cage set up and still being able to have a unique color options but I was looking at the length of the cage and its about seven inches longer than the base support. I was wondering if anyone had had a problem with the gap or if it was no big deal. If not be I'm so going to get the light green kallax with the white detolf :D
MegaNerdyLove I personally find that the detolf being bigger than the kallax helps as the glass base gets more support. If you place the detolf onto a unit of the same length it's raised up a little due to the wooden ends of the detolf. This causes the glass to bow in the midde when you add the substrate in which may weaken the glass long term. The kallax and detolf are a perfect combination though :)
Great review, I have a detolf and love it :) I just thought that I would add that the cage isn't suitable for bar-chewing hamsters as there are bars on the inside of the cage. x
My hamster did this, I put the glass shelves flat on the bottom where she was chewing and it stopped :) (though wouldn't stop them chewing the vertical ones)
Always be sure to get the Kallax with the detolf! I didn't get my kallax, and I had to leave the detolf on the floor. The edge of the wood left a deep cut on my leg D:
ella trible Since she has already built it, I don't think she wants to take it down, move her hamster, and build it all over again. There are plenty of other videos you could watch of people building this for their pets.
Hi Erin, I am really happy! My hamster was always bar chewing and being bored, and I am going to get him the Detolf! His name is Noodle. Thanks so much!!!! Amylase is so sweet! :)
I feel so bad for my Hamsters cause they are in a commercial cage but I am planning on asking for this on my birthday, the cage they r in now will have to be good enough for them untill October☹
+ErinsAnimals My winter white died yesterday and I was thinking about getting a new hamster but just not straight away and my dad was going to buy a 50 gallon tank and it was really expensive but then this came up in the recommended section and it looks better then the 50 gallon tank, thank you so so much :) :) :)
Wow I never thought of that idea before, that looks very fun, I may look into that for the future. Also I don't think that mice should have this because they live to climb like like rats. But anyway really good review, love all your videos!!
Inspiration is flowing, i'm getting a detolf for Akilles on my next paycheck! He's gong to be som happy there:) But i have a practical question: how many liters of bedding do you use filling it up? (I use the carefresh bedding)
Eva Storlien Syltevik We don't measure substrate in litres here it's all in kilograms, we use about 2kg once a month for this particular set up which costs us €6 for the 2kg of aspen :)
(This is going to sound like a stupid question, I’m sorry in advance 😅) Can you keep this on the floor? If I can’t I’ll just build a diy cage or buy a large bin... with lots of add ons. 😂
I would love to get a detolf and put the divider in the middle, that way Hamster could switch every day to get new toys, or each week that way they could be in a normal cage while I clean the other c:
It would be much more beneficial to provide the entire cage for the hamster and just buy a small travel cage for clean outs. A hamster would get very stressed being switched between cages every day and you can just swap out the toys in the cage every couple of weeks to prevent boredom rather than switching cages :)
I am getting this for my birthday. I really want my hamster to live the "Dream" before he passes away. Ever since I saw this video I fell in love with the cage. (Yes I am weird)
Dear Erin, good afternoon from the Netherlands. We hope you are well. Thank you for you very useful, clear information. We have just set up the IKEA Detolf. We how have our first Hamster, (a Syrian). May I ask a question please? Our new hamster has been previously owned and handled, he is 2 months old and in good health. We have left him alone in his natural set up for 3 days. I want to start letting him get used to the us. I am slightly concerned that the Detolf cage is a bit less accessible to bond with him as I have to plunge my whole arm and hand down to his floor area. We have yet to build a higher level which may be easier. I feel that although I love the larger floor space he has, I wondered if he had a barred cage with an upstair level leading to an upper floor with exit door, it would be easier to bond with him. Also, he would smell my scent easily if I was offering him a treat at eye level through a wired cage? I wondered if you had any opinion on this matter? As yet, it is only 3 days and we are going through the process of the bonding experience. Onky twice have we offered our hand down into the cage (third day only) and he ran away to hide. Perhaps building a platform will be easier, so we can life the lid and he will be closer to us? In his previous cage which he spent his first 2 months in with his previous owners, it was barred, smaller, narrow with two levels and he ate on the top floor where his food bowl was. This is where his door out was also located. We observed him keenly coming out onto his owners hand when we rehomed him. So, although I do love the Detolf, I am slightly concerned we will find it harder to bond with him. We would very much appreciate your experienced opinion. With very kind thanks in advance. 😊🙏🏼🐹🌷🌷🌷
Could you possibly have 2 gerbs in one side an one hamster on the other half if you split it? O would it cause too much stress with the smell? Considering they had a lid.
i am crying! we are homing two gerbils soon and JUST TREW OUT this exact shelf
Becky Downey wot
Sakshi Valand she’s getting two gerbils and had a detolf but just threw it out
Why would you ever get rid of a detolf? Real question.
Wait what
Dat is a BUMER😳😳🙄🙄
Im going to save homeless hybrid hamster and Im for sure buying this for her. I actually got little too crazy with this cos now Im going to redecorate my whole apartment just to give justice for this amazing cage. Thank you for introducing this for me !
Not all heros wear capes !

Awesome!!! I'm sure they will love it! Its awesome to see people who care like this to hamsters 😀
My mums letting me get it! (Last time she said no) I mean I will have to pay for but it's worth it. My mums also make me pay her £10 for her driving to IKEA which is around 40mins away. How are your hamsters doing? :)
How is your hamsters? :d did they fight?
the closest Ikea near me is two hrs away...
Me and everyone else wants to know how your hamsters are going ? 😂😂
Yup how are they? Even robos can fight sometimes so
"Requires you to build it."
Like 98% of everything in ikea.
or you could ask someone from Ikea to come and build it for you.
I need this for my Syrian, Honey! She'd absolutely love this cage! Sucks that there isn't an IKEA anywhere near where I live... Hamster twins. I have a long haired syrian and I named her Honey
Our closest ikea is next to the airport in the mall of America
I'm gonna start saving so I can do this for my hamster, I didn't even realise just how much space she needs! 💕
peachie babie ya same!!
I'm thinking of buying 2 gerbils and i wanted to purchase a tank that enabled them to have lots of space. This option is more affordable and gives them tons of space to run around. Thank you so much for creating this video, this has saved me so much money!
How is it holdin the bedding I’ve heard the detolf can’t hold lots of bedding

Plus, if you have mice AND cats, *definitely* make a lid for it :)
Anna's Animals a chinchilla dream cage! Cut holes in the shelves and put the door on! Perfect!
Zoe cats vs hamsters
Crystal Dragon that’s to small for chinchillas
Cleaning only every three to four weeks??? Sign me up!
Loool same
It’s the correctly
A lid is so necessary! My dwarf hamsters have both figured out how to climb up the grey poles on the side and escaped. Keep your hamsters safe :)
Got one of these awhile back because of you. My little Momo loves it! She's very spoiled. Great cage!
I just got my Detolf, and my Syrians love it. its littrealy longer Then my room
my 3 syrian hamsters loved this
This is one of the very few species appropriate cages for a hamster i saw on english youtube! Great :D
Great idea i like the fact you can have more then one small animal at a time

Wow that's amazing!! Perfect amount of space for the hamster.
I am definitely getting this cage early next year! I have to wait until then because I will be moving in to a new room. Thanks for this video Erin :D
You are so clever to use a Detolf display cabinet as a hamster cage! I love it! :)
I bought this and my hamsters love it ...... my dad had to go to ikea so I asked him to pick it up. He had no idea it was glass and carried as if it wouldn't brake. I have to build a lid for mine because I have a curious cat.
ok?
Thanks sooo much Erin!!! This is a perfect cage for my hamster I never would have thought of using that!! Thank you!!!😀
Thank you so much for this video! I've been looking everywhere to find the perfect set up for my Syrian hamster. This was very informative and helpful :)

this will be my next cage project.
If you have more than one hamster you could split it
Or if you want to you can split it and make so you have different parts like
A play area, sand bath, digging area or taming area
OMG!! Thank you sooo much for making this video! My mom said that we are defiantly getting the detolf which will be a huge upgrade for two of my four hamsters (my other two already have huge cages over the uk minimum) Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! :D
HammyHearts Oh that's amazing! My mom needs allot of convincing to get any kinds of upgrades. You are soo lucky!
+HelloSerafina Films so does my mum :)
I have a 4x4 expedit shelf and I made the top 4 shelves into a 810 sq. inch hamster cage!
I've got one coming for my gerbils :) they currently live in a 3ft tank with a homemade upper level... I'm moving bedrooms (into a bigger one) so will be letting them have more space again :) this was a great review & I hope it helps many small animal owners :) xx
Are you using a lid? Just curious :)
Most defo, my boys would be out in a shot otherwise haha xx
You HAVE to make a video on making the lid (ik thesmallpetshop did a tank lid video) but I've never found a detolf lid video and so many people want a video on it for Syrians and gerbils haha :) or if they have cats and such! I can't wait to see how happy your gerbils are in it
It’s perfect for if you want dwarf pairs cause if they don’t get along you can easily split it into two cages
If you don't put substrate under the wheel you can fit a 12 inch wheel in the detolf
Really smart idea
Great review, I think I will be getting this for my 3 gerbils! :)
Hi no hate but you need an even number of gerbils if you have 3 in can lead to 2 of them ganging up on 1, having 4 gerbils is better
Uh no, he was right. You can't have three female gerbils. :)
I have 3 male gerbils living together and they never fight, in fact they get on really well! I don't think I would have chosen to have 3 gerbils but they were all looking for a new home together and I thought why not :)
I wish I could get a detolf! But it's a little bit out of reach in my budget. But I will try! I think Pixel will love it!
I think this cage is so awesome and I'm saving up for more pets and hopefully this cage🐶🐱🐹🐰
if anyone was wondering in the US the ikea deltolf is usually about $70
I just got this!! And I haven’t used it yet cause I don’t have my new hamster yet but it was pretty difficult to put together but it’s soo worth it
I'm getting this soon can't wait because my hamster will be soooo happy with it as he's a dwarf he looooooves to run around heheh
I just ordered mine. It's not going to arrive until May 14th though.. I'm counting down the days!!
Oh my god I wish you were my aunt or someone related to me because I just got my hamsters and my mum is over them and you could help me shop for the best hamster things
I'm getting my hammy soon and I'm 100% getting this cage it's really cheap for its size. It only cost £40 in the U.K😱🙌🏼
Great video I like how you tell us why it's good and you're experience .Thanks
Im going to get a Detolf for my hamster after my birthday!👍
May I ask if there are gaps between the glass panels? If there are, what do you use to seal them up e.g. to stop bedding escaping through the gaps? I've seen people use aquarium sealant (pet-safe) and was wondering if this was recommended, and whether this should be done as you set up the Detolf or after it's been put together?
I have a much smaller but ideal size cage at the Monet and that takes us 40mins to clean!
I'm getting the detolf for my syrian jasmine she lives in a tiny 30 gallon and is outgrowing it time for an upgrade!
I love everything about the detolf cage!
AMAZING!!! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH for filming this!! Definitely considering this for my mouse! Thanks soooooooo much for this idea! :D
I'm going to get this for my new syrian :D I can't wait except I'm going to need to build a lid, ugh lol
I'm gonna attach two detolfs together in a year and maybe if we move I'll try to attach three!
I love this cage and I recommend it! Great review Erin! One thing I don't like about it is that it's made of glass and can break easily :(
Im looking into housing 3 mice in this cage :) thanks for the video
remember to make a lid since mice can escape easily.
I now need that cage
Lovely review, Erin! I wish I had the space for a detolf! :D x

Selina Schaal there is nothing to sorry about it is an amazing cage and her hamster must have just been WILD
Selina Schaal your welcome i have that cage now and it is AMAZING i Love it, you would Love it too!!!!!

So sorry
I am trying to convince my mom and dad to let me have this cage for my two dwarf hamsters, they will have to be separated with a glass shelf because it is a robo dwarf and a Russian dwarf. By the way thank you for pointing it out that it is an excellent hamster cage; I would have never figured it out by myself!
is 11 inch wheel good for syrian
Nael Alaeddin - yup, I've watched multiple videos because I'm doing research and many videos say that young Syrians need 8 inch ones and adults need 11.

Nael Alaeddin ya it’s actually the one you need to get for a syrian
would an 11 inch wheel fit in the detolf? It says on the website the height of the thing is only 17cm
Yupi perfect
I got a new syrian hamster yesterday and she is lovely! I have gotten the Detolf for her and filled it with some toys, food, sandbath and so on but she insists on biting on the metal bars. ella trible Since she has already built it, I don't think she wants to take it down, move her hamster, and build it all over again. There are plenty of other videos you could watch of people building this for their pets.
I want the detolf so bad! But I have 4 hamsters so I will probably be making an expedit cage. :)
I'm gonna buy this.

hyperskygames no
a small bag of kaytee clean and cozy overfilled my detolf :) just a suggestion
(This is going to sound like a stupid question, I’m sorry in advance 😅)
Can you keep this on the floor? If I can’t I’ll just build a diy cage or buy a large bin... with lots of add ons. 😂
Pixelate Wings yes you can
I would love to get a detolf and put the divider in the middle, that way Hamster could switch every day to get new toys, or each week that way they could be in a normal cage while I clean the other c:
It would be much more beneficial to provide the entire cage for the hamster and just buy a small travel cage for clean outs. A hamster would get very stressed being switched between cages every day and you can just swap out the toys in the cage every couple of weeks to prevent boredom rather than switching cages :)
I use hamocs. I clip it to the metal bars
Is it better to install the middle cabinet (glass) or build a wood divider?
I love your videos and my cage is three thirds do the detolf and I love this viedo!!!
could you ,if you had two hamsters, split the detolf cage in two with one of the shelves?
I am getting this for my birthday. I really want my hamster to live the "Dream" before he passes away. Ever since I saw this video I fell in love with the cage. (Yes I am weird)
thank you so much
If I made a secure lid this would be good for a snake :D
"if you have predator animals" ah, yes, i have three ferocious guinea pigs
Good video thanks I was going to get one but now I am so going to get one now
I have an 8.5 comfort wheel but it is fairly noisy at night so I was thinking about getting a 12 inch silent spinner
That's a great cage, but only have 2 concerns 1.space and 2.cost:)
So I can happily split this? I have two hammies and they’d love this!
I just got this and ill be getting my syrian bud in 8,8
I also have the EXPEDIT! Ive had it for 3 years now,
Great video! Keep it up!
We waited about two weeks when bringing ours home. It took a while and he finally came out and to us. Hang in there..and best of luck to you guys..
Could you possibly have 2 gerbs in one side an one hamster on the other half if you split it? O would it cause too much stress with the smell? Considering they had a lid.
