When I was little I always kept my hamsters in critter trails. Thought they were massive because they had shelved. I now work in a small pet shop, we took in a pregnant hamster from a divorced woman, the mom didn’t make it due to the woman letting her get pregnant side by side and it was too much for her body having all those babies. We hand fed them so they’re super tame for dwarfs ! I took the females home, there are three. I have them in a 20 gallon long until their detolf ships!!! So excited!!! There has been some bickering ( no fighting , just mounting and squealing to determine their dominance. ) so I cant wait to move them into their huge detolf. Spoiled babies XX.
Shay Rose definitely make sure you separate them if you haven’t already. It doesn’t matter if it takes 2 days or 2 months or 2 years, eventually they will fight.
Just a suggestion, I tend to cut the cardboard box that it comes in to make a lid. It is pretty ugly but very practical as it can be folded to only open one side and is just generally easy to access the rodent. My robo is very adventurous so i fill the whole of one side of the Detolf to the brim with a mix of Carefresh and Orchard Grass hay for support. Also, as silly as this sounds, I don't advise new pet owners to get the detolf. The rodents are easy to lose and can be stressful for you and the hamster.
You can skip using the metal support bars and use construction glue to adhere the glass to the wood end caps, then use clear caulking to seal it all up nicely. That way, you don't have bars obstructing the view at all :)

I don’t think it would be problematic directly on the floor. I prefer it up on top of the drawers as I think it could be less intimidating for a hamster and I find it useful having the storage underneath but I imagine it would be fine on the floor too.
Hi. I’m building one of these. I thought they got rid of the expedite unit at IKEA? Do they still sell it? If not are you sure the Kallax works? Because I’m going to have whatever I buy shipped and I need to make sure before I buy it. Thankyou for your help so much!
Hi, yes I believe the expedit units were replaced by the kallax so you could probably only get the expedits second hand. I haven't used the kallax personally but there is a load of posts about it on Hamster Hideout forum here which might help: hamsterhideout.com/forum/topic/142621-ikea-detolf-on-top-of-kallax/ :)
As the detolf is quite expensive, can you use it twice for different hamsters? If you can’t then I understand, I’m not trying to be bad for my hamster btw Its just because I’m 13 so I only get birthday and Christmas money obviously
Hi, yes it can be reused again and again for other hamsters as long as you disinfect it thoroughly in between. I just got a new one because we got rid of our last one when we moved house and didn't have a hamster. It is expensive so you could consider a bin cage too if you wanted a great size cage and wanted to save money. It does require a bit more DIY though x
Im planning on getting a secondhand one. Just wondering if its easy to just remove the parts where you'd normally put stuff on if it isnt a cage? Im not really looking to unscrew a bunch of things and stuff you know!
I want the ikea detolf soooooo bad for my hammie but my parents are split up and I have to travel back and forth between them and I don’t know what I would do with my hamsters? Anyone have any ideas? :)
Mango Hammie hmm idk maybe you can make get a small travel cage thing for your hamster to come with you so at one house where you spend more time at have the ikea detolf and at the other house where you spend less time use a bin cage or get two ikea detolfs for each
. hamsters in U.S and Canada need a minimum of 450 sq. inches and please get a bigger wheel. you should have a 8-12 inch wheel depending on the hamster. You also need at least 6 inches of bedding. no hate. just a little advise:)
It is a forage mix made of dried plants and herbs. They like to nibble on them and sometimes use them in their nest. I like it as a healthy alternative to the usual shop bought treats 😊
Rmr. *At least 10 inches of bedding for burrowing, doesn’t have to be 10 inches in the whole enclosure, you could have a lot of bedding in one place. ☺️*
I don't know what rmr means but I know the bedding wasn’t as deep in this video as recommended and I should have explained more in the video that this was temporary while she was settling in, I didn’t want to make everything a total shock for her, I then transitioned her to this set up with deep bedding one end. I use a glass one from living world. It has a flat back so is easy to stick on the inside of the detolf with a bit of industrial strength velcro. You can see it in this video 2 minutes in: ua-cam.com/video/xkWE_dTnVxw/v-deo.html :)

thinking of geting the same set up my only concern is the Kaiiax unit says it is 39cm Deep and the Detolf is 43cm Deep do you havt put another sheet of wood under it or is it ok with a bit of overhang
Has anyone had any additional experience with going lidless for dwarves and robos? I feel like my robos could jump (I’ve seen it on rare occasion) so I’m not sure about no lid, but I would love to leave it open for ease of interaction!
It probably depends on your hamsters and the depth of bedding or height of toys in their setup. I used a lid with my foster dwarves until they got too old to have high toys in their setup, you know your hamsters best though 😊
@@BeckysAnimals thanks for your reply! Yeah, I mean I’ve never seen my robos even attempt to climb, I don’t think they could if they tried! They also seem so nervous about things up high I don’t think they would want to. I actually just got 200 qt bins so it can be extra deep and I can skip the lid without worry Working on setting that up now!
Lillvit ~ You’d have to make a lid. The detolf is glass so you can’t easily make holes unless you have special tools. I recommend a lid also because your hamster otherwise can climb out, and it helps with ventilation.
Hi I was think of getting a hamster and I saw this video but I noticed the sides kind of go under the glass if that makes sense and I was wondering if I got that would I be able to place it on the floor?
The sides and bottom slot together with a plastic strip so I can’t see it being an issue, I have seen some people on forums use it on the floor successfully
At the moment I have the pets at home cage u have but in a couple of months I will be able to upgrade to the IKEA detolf as my hamster is a Syrian he deserves a good life
@@BeckysAnimals ohhh I have a really big desk so the detolf wouldn’t work for me unless I altered the bases/cubes to be level with the rest of the detolf which sucks! I had to get a 40 gallon breeder instead because of the expensive shipping! Andddd I also hate ikea 😂
You totally could. The minimum for one hamster is 450 square inches of floor space and the detolf is about 950, so 950 divided by two is 475. you’re good!👍

TheSmallPetShop oh Thankyou so much! I’ll go ahead and checkout the forum. Love your Detolf setup btw. Looks awesome! ✨✨✨👍🏽☺️🐹✨✨✨

Are the shelves removable??
Im planning on getting a secondhand one. Just wondering if its easy to just remove the parts where you'd normally put stuff on if it isnt a cage? Im not really looking to unscrew a bunch of things and stuff you know!
The shelves only sit on the metalwork so you don’t even need to unscrew them. The door may require some unscrewing but should be pretty easy to do.
I want the ikea detolf soooooo bad for my hammie but my parents are split up and I have to travel back and forth between them and I don’t know what I would do with my hamsters? Anyone have any ideas? :)
Mango Hammie hmm idk maybe you can make get a small travel cage thing for your hamster to come with you so at one house where you spend more time at have the ikea detolf and at the other house where you spend less time use a bin cage or get two ikea detolfs for each
Aviee B Vlogs thank you!
What did you use to go behind the detolf? Is it wrapping paper? Also, are there any possible ways the hamster could escape? Love your videos!
Thank you
Can I put sand directly in the shelf or do I need to put in a box? Just wondering if the sand would go through or not.
. hamsters in U.S and Canada need a minimum of 450 sq. inches and please get a bigger wheel. you should have a 8-12 inch wheel depending on the hamster. You also need at least 6 inches of bedding. no hate. just a little advise:)
What food was put in the carrot bowl?
It is a forage mix made of dried plants and herbs. They like to nibble on them and sometimes use them in their nest. I like it as a healthy alternative to the usual shop bought treats 😊
do you think my syrian hamster would escape from this or should I make a lid?
make a lid thats more safe its what i did :)
A Syrian is quite likely to escape. I had to make a lid for every Syrian I have tried to house in this cage, better to be safe than sorry :)
I'm planning on putting gerbils in this cage, would I have to make a lid for this?
im such a worrier even if there was no way of my hamster getting out i would still need a lid
I can’t wait to give my hamsters and upgrade
She wasn’t really a burrower though ua-cam.com/video/xkWE_dTnVxw/v-deo.html
I have just upgraded to the detolf, I didnt see the water bottle in the video what do you use? I'm struggling to find something good quality that can stand
I use a glass one from living world. It has a flat back so is easy to stick on the inside of the detolf with a bit of industrial strength velcro. You can see it in this video 2 minutes in: ua-cam.com/video/xkWE_dTnVxw/v-deo.html :)
Hi.. great video. Are you sure you have enough bedding?
Thank you, no it's not enough bedding, this was temporary while she was settling in, I didn’t want to make everything a total shock for her. I eventually transitioned her to this set up with deep bedding one end. She wasn’t really a burrower though ua-cam.com/video/xkWE_dTnVxw/v-deo.html
What Mesh lid do you guys recommend? I can't find the perfect one
You can make a diy lid. Just take some mesh from Home Depot (it’s about 10 dollars) and you can staple it to the detolf
@@lucentwanderlust staple it to a wooden frame not the detolf though
thinking of geting the same set up my only concern is the Kaiiax unit says it is 39cm Deep and the Detolf is 43cm Deep do you havt put another sheet of wood under it or is it ok with a bit of overhang
Ian Burgess overhang is recommended actually because the detolf has like things that hang off each end. It’s kinda hard to explain. You’re good lol
What bedding do you use and where can I buy it from? What would you recommend for a syrian that's budget friendly?
Hannah Brimble Walmart has decently cheap paper bedding
make sure that its safe:D
Definitely buy in bulk, amazon has some good deals... What did you end up using?
The bedding should be a lot deeper.
Wonderful!!
3:44 where did you get that white storage table from?
Maria's World Its two desks called kallax they are from ikea
Ikea they are the kallax units
Kallax unit ikea 25£
What size is your cage cm × cm? It looks awesome and i want one
Can you make holes on the side for the hamster to breath or do you really need to make your own lid?
Lillvit ~ You’d have to make a lid. The detolf is glass so you can’t easily make holes unless you have special tools. I recommend a lid also because your hamster otherwise can climb out, and it helps with ventilation.
What kind of bedding do you use?
where did you get your bedding because i’m getting the detof for a cage and i need a lot of bedding???
Cecilia Fink Pet stores, chewy, and amazon all have hamster bedding.
So it's actually a shelf?
@@Dash_Speaks moonkitti!
Great video
Thank you 😊
You should definitely put more bedding on one side because they actually do need quite a bit of substrate :)
What did you use to put the wall paper on the cage?
actually in america and canada its reccomended 450 sq inches
A few years ago the standard was 360 square inches, around 20 gallons/80 quarts...
Actually in the US it’s 450
Put more bedding in !?
Hi I was think of getting a hamster and I saw this video but I noticed the sides kind of go under the glass if that makes sense and I was wondering if I got that would I be able to place it on the floor?
The sides and bottom slot together with a plastic strip so I can’t see it being an issue, I have seen some people on forums use it on the floor successfully
what a good video! really helpful! tnx
They have it at Amazon but it's $204 and if u buy it from ikea for 60 dollars I live in the US
Now: US and CA is 450 square inches now.
The wheel with edges is not recommended for the hamster feet
Uk is 360 sq inch o_o. I’m never coming back to this channel
You should put 6inch bedding
You need to have more bedding in a section, at least 6in
At the moment I have the pets at home cage u have but in a couple of months I will be able to upgrade to the IKEA detolf as my hamster is a Syrian he deserves a good life
you should add more beading! 😁
Is it possible to saw off the bases of the detolf so that it doesn’t need a stand?
Do you mean the cubes underneath? The units I have it sat on are a separate piece of furniture.
All I could see while watching was the little Syrian in the background!
I wish that things were cheap in brazil
Hello 👋 just a question could I use a detof for two cages instead of one
You totally could. The minimum for one hamster is 450 square inches of floor space and the detolf is about 950, so 950 divided by two is 475. you’re good!👍
just ensure the hamsters can't meet, they are solitary
Where do you get mashed up because usually it’s really expensive
What do you mean by mashed up?
TheSmallPetShop where do you buy mesh at
Most garden centres will have it. Places like Homebase, B&Q, The Range or online 😊
that needs more bedding and enrichment, just like my own.
Recommended to not put food in a biwl rather bury it
I’m not sure if that’s good bedding but that substrate looks hard
How many square inches is this? Because I could get this and afford it and have a few hundred dollars left
How often do you cleam this cage?
Hi, I spot clean weekly but only do a full cage clean once a month. I keep some of the bedding back though so it’s still got her scent on and doesn’t completely freak them out.
Super!!
Can I put the cage on my floor ?
Because I don’t have a dresser ?? 😭😭😭
I tried putting it together on its side. ...
3 hours ago. I have given up
