    I know the bedding wasn’t as deep in this video as recommended, this was temporary while she was settling in, I didn’t want to make everything a total shock for her, I eventually transitioned her to this set up with deep bedding one end. She wasn’t really a burrower though ua-cam.com/video/xkWE_dTnVxw/v-deo.html

      What bedding are you using atm? The bedding in this video is unsafe anf bad for them

    • @BeckysAnimals
      @BeckysAnimals  4 роки тому +4

      As I explained in the video, that was the bedding she came with and so had her scent on. I waited until she had settled in before I changed it to reduce her stress. I normally use a paper based bedding called Fitch (like carefresh but another brand). I’m currently trying out Megazorb though, which is a recycled cardboard bedding.

      Hamsters need 11 to 12 inch wheels. Those are ideal. Amazon sells silent runners or Woodent wheels for 25 to 30 dollars. These are great for saving your hamsters back and paws from injury.

    • @shayrose7705
      @shayrose7705 4 роки тому +39

      Dana Chamberlain frankly if people don’t have $90 or the space and time for a good cage they shouldn’t own a hamster. That’s like saying if someone doesn’t have the money for a dog, the time and leaves it in a kennel, or the patience to walk it, they should still be allowed a dog. 🤔

    Actually for the Us and Canada they require a minimum of 450 square inches

    • @BeckysAnimals
      @BeckysAnimals  6 років тому +38

      Ooooh! That's great! I knew there was talk of increasing it but it's such a confusing one with the US size as there is a lot of conflicting information, the Humaine Society and the ASPCA still say 288 square inches so I was going by the forums such as Hamster Hideout who tend to say 360. I'm so glad it is increasing as 360 square inches was still far too small :)

    EDIT: I wanted to add a tip for you; you can still fit a 28cm wheel in (which I will be doing and I've seen works) by not adding any substrate under the wheel in that area and it'll fit in. I'm adding a height lid to mine at some point but just wanted to state this for others!
    I'm actually tracking my detolf unit right this minute, it's 9 stops away! I had to pay £100 for mine from IKEA, £60 for the cabinet itself and £40 for delivery as only access to a Ford KA (as I can't drive my car which is bigger than my family's since I have no driving license yet) so had to pay for delivery. But, can't wait to get my male Syrian into the new "enclosure"! And watching this, at 3:08, I could see your ham monkey barring so good job you upgraded!! My ham is currently in a 709 square inch bin cage but I really wanted to have something a little nicer than a box on my table. But in return, my ham gets another 300 square inch of space pretty much.

    When I was little I always kept my hamsters in critter trails. Thought they were massive because they had shelved. I now work in a small pet shop, we took in a pregnant hamster from a divorced woman, the mom didn’t make it due to the woman letting her get pregnant side by side and it was too much for her body having all those babies. We hand fed them so they’re super tame for dwarfs ! I took the females home, there are three. I have them in a 20 gallon long until their detolf ships!!! So excited!!! There has been some bickering ( no fighting , just mounting and squealing to determine their dominance. ) so I cant wait to move them into their huge detolf. Spoiled babies XX.

    Just a suggestion, I tend to cut the cardboard box that it comes in to make a lid. It is pretty ugly but very practical as it can be folded to only open one side and is just generally easy to access the rodent. My robo is very adventurous so i fill the whole of one side of the Detolf to the brim with a mix of Carefresh and Orchard Grass hay for support.
    Also, as silly as this sounds, I don't advise new pet owners to get the detolf. The rodents are easy to lose and can be stressful for you and the hamster.

  • @karasmidt2813

    You can skip using the metal support bars and use construction glue to adhere the glass to the wood end caps, then use clear caulking to seal it all up nicely. That way, you don't have bars obstructing the view at all :)

    You need a section that has 6-10 inches of bedding,that way you’re hamster can burrow, hamsters a have been known to burrow as deep 33 inches down. And you’re hamster that was monkey barring is very stressed monkey barring is caused by stress and boredom,they are trying to look for a way out of the cage,just a few things to consider

    . hamsters in U.S and Canada need a minimum of 450 sq. inches and please get a bigger wheel. you should have a 8-12 inch wheel depending on the hamster. You also need at least 6 inches of bedding. no hate. just a little advise:)

      It is a forage mix made of dried plants and herbs. They like to nibble on them and sometimes use them in their nest. I like it as a healthy alternative to the usual shop bought treats 😊

    Has anyone had any additional experience with going lidless for dwarves and robos? I feel like my robos could jump (I’ve seen it on rare occasion) so I’m not sure about no lid, but I would love to leave it open for ease of interaction!

    • @BeckysAnimals
      @BeckysAnimals  4 роки тому +1

      It probably depends on your hamsters and the depth of bedding or height of toys in their setup. I used a lid with my foster dwarves until they got too old to have high toys in their setup, you know your hamsters best though 😊

      Lillvit ~ You’d have to make a lid. The detolf is glass so you can’t easily make holes unless you have special tools. I recommend a lid also because your hamster otherwise can climb out, and it helps with ventilation.
