The entre album belongs in everybody's collection. It's a classic that everybody should listen to and own.
Have you heard the Stand by your van CD? It's one of the best I've heard so raw and so...so Bradley off of heroin
The album should be listened to from beginning to end.
Agreed.
I own over 1500 CDs, 40oz to freedom is by far my favorite
I know its in my collection
Sublime was so bad ass. Going to their show was crazy, they had the most diverse fans ever. Still one of my favorites
The whole summer of 1996, this album never came out of my truck's CD player.
same bro.
@@rambowbizz Hell yea. Hearing this brings back memories...
it made several return trips for the past 25 years.
lol same
amen
“Wrong Way” , “April 29, 1992” are darker but great songs!!!! Also love “Same in the End”!!! And can’t forget “Garden Grove” one of my favorites!!!!
Wrong way & 1992 go hard 🔥
They did Wrong Way during a live stream. Brad couldn't finish it due to the lyrics.
also Date rape is dark song that be interesting for them to react
👍👍👍👍
Pool shark is the darkest song he wrote. He predicted he was going to lose the war and unfortunately he was right.
Such a shame Bradley Nowell died by overdose 2 months before this album was released and became HUGE. He didn't even get to see his own success. Don't do heroine people, only 28 years old...
Heroine at 28 wtf 💀
Well at least he wasnt added to the 27 Club.
Heroin = Drug. Heroine = Female hero, which I suppose could still be dangerous to "do."
He died on the tour bus the night before the album was coming out..
@@58brandt He died May 1996, album released July 1996.
Sublime is one of the most stoner music bands and they almost always got a chill vibe.
Bradley Noell and Sublime are SO underrated when it comes to incredibly well written music of the 90's , I feel they should be as popular as Nirvana but oh well I love them so much .
You hit it on the head when you said you thought this song was about appreciating life. Thats the whole album. He is singing about his shitty life but he loves it and he loves his dog Louie. It was for me at like 17 at the time a motivating force.
Sublime was Ska, Punk, Reggae, Hip Hop all rolled up in one. No one did it better.
In the uk we call it dub music a bit like slightly stupid
@cjcichlidsbailes1346 yeah totally,. People use that term out here as well. The remaining members of sublime did start Long Beach Dub Allstars.
It’s called Ska. It is a genre from Jamaica in the 30’s. So much in this genre. The Specials - Ghost town or Message to you Rudy
Rat Race and Do Nothing are my favorites.
This particular song isn't ska.
@@UMfan21 SoCal Ska-Punk, then? I listen to old, old ska and things like Sublime and Dirty Heads. I consider them all a form of ska. I suppose The Specials could be classed as Two-Tone or British Ska Punk?
"the specials" "ghost town" is a gem!! 💎
I consider Sublime more dub influenced than ska or reggae.
Before Bradley Nowell passed away , he had a beautiful relationship with his dog , his Dalmatian . His dogs name was “ Lou Dog “
You will hear him sing about “ Lou Dog “ in many songs .
I once read that Lou Dog meant the world to Bradley 🤘🏻
"I don't get angry when my mom smokes pot
Hits the bottle and goes right to the rock"
As a child of a drug addict this shit hit different. Sucks that it was censored here but still hits
Same here... was always my favorite line
Not to pry but your mom was that bad on pot? Or were you just speaking about drugs in general?
Edit: not to pry but.…. I just became that guy.,. Duck me
@@A_Name_ Yeah you missed it.
That last part of the line I have never thought of it like that. I heard it more like a place not a thing. I get it now if that was your meaning
Censorship is LAME. If someone has a problem with a song, don’t listen to/play it. Drug use happens. Why are we ashamed to tell the truth about American culture? Drugs are a fact of life of in families, neighborhoods, and communities. Remove the stigma. If he said “My mom has cancer or depression” no one would dream of censoring it.
Lex...Sublime is what you put on when you need to move your vibe into happiness. I'm glad that you felt it as the song went on.
40 oz. To freedom is another great one by Sublime.
Y’all should do Everclear…Santa Monica
I recommend Bad Fish, Rivers of Babylon, Doin' Time, Caress Me Down, or even I Saw Red (it features Gwen Stefani)!
I really appreciated he fact that you guys break down songs, and try to understand them on a deeper level. It’s so refreshing to see that from younger people. I’m not some old fuck, but I’m 36 with a 16 yr old son. I’ve been doing my best o expose him to new music and ideas. You guys basically bridge the gap, and influence more people than you’d probably ever know. Open mindedness is something that’s important. I think you 2 can and have a much larger influence than you know. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I can’t say it enough.
You guys have been nailing these reactions. I swear every song brings me back to the 90s and early 2000s.
Couldn't agree more it's like they pulled out all the CD's that I was listening to from the end of highschool into my early twenties. Seeing their reactions to this song's with fresh ears is pretty cool. They are giving me a new appreciation for all these songs all over again. They need to do 311 as they are another band that has a similar style. I wonder if they will do anything from The Mighty Mighty Bosstones for a true taste of Ska.
The thing about Sublime.. is that it can give you happy sounds with absolutely heartbreaking lyrics. Bradley(lead singer) died of an OD. There's a song called badfish expressing his problems and he gets really dark on a song called ,"Pool Shark"
Well put. Much like one of Bradley's heroes, Bob Marley.
You gotta react to Sublime "Caress me down" !!
My favorite...
Fingers crossed 🤞
Cochino!!! Lol
With lyric translation for the Spanish for sure! It’s a chune
It's that loving song.
Me and my friends back in the day used to call Sublime "gangsta reggae"
The genre is called Ska, but I believe Reggae is an overall influence on Ska
Celebrate each day you get, because if one day no tomorrow comes, at least you celebrated every day you got.
Btw, newer follower here and I LOVE you guys' reactions, speculations, and interpretations. You're a whole vibe 😂
Ska was first, then rocksteady and reggae!
Not going to lie I got a little misty-eyed seeing Bradley and Lou dog. These guys are very important band to me growing up in the 90s because I didn't exactly have the best home life or living situation but me and my friends while we dabbled in some of the wrong paths of life we all tried to stay happy and I think sublime really epitomized what we were going through.
Lou dog 😢
Sublime's Doin' Time, Waiting for My Ruca, 40 Oz to Freedom, Pawn Shop, Wrong Way, Smoke Two Joints or if you want something faster by them, try the song Date Rape. Please do a reaction to a band called Hed pe, they're metal, punk music infused with hip hop. Songs Renegade, Suffa, Killing Time, Ordo Ab Chao, Bartender, Ground or Blackout. Thx & keep the great reactions coming👊🤟
Not enough reactors do hed pe reactions. I could see Lex enjoying them
Yes hed PE
40 Oz to Freedom is an absolute must! But all the songs you've suggested are a must as well. I also think they should react to Slightly Stoopid. Closer to the Sun would be my go to.
@@asouthernlad717 I mentioned Slightly Stoopid along with Long Beach Dub Allstars on their lastest Sublime Doin Time reaction.
Brad, you're a young legend mah man!! Like the way you explain things. Lex is good too but at times you fill that human side that is hard to explain my brother. God bless you guys!
Some more great Sublime: "Doin' Time", "April 22, 1992 (Miami)", "Same in the End", and "Get Ready".
April 29 1992 *
There's no (Miami) in the title of April 26, 1992. That song is about the post-Rodney King verdict L.A. riots that spread throughout the country.
@@marijuasher I know what the song is about and the (Miami) text is there on the CD's track listing, but thanks for responding.
This reminds me of my junior year in high school. This song was my song back in the day with my flannel, pink floyd tee, cargo pants.Vans and my Yankees ballcap turned around and a joint in my mouth
Loved your infectious smiles while reminiscing about boarding and freezer pops. Made my day.
Reggae, punk, hiphop. Thats there biggest influence. They were one of a kind.
Brad you are so spot on with the rewinds... you never miss a note!
Sublime is the ultimate chill smoke weed hang w friends band!! Their music is reggae, Ska, Punk, Rock, and rap lol the best of all worlds!
I listen to this song whenever I’m feeling down. It’s a great thing to have on deck if you feel bad.
Lexi and I are on the same wavelength. Love the angsty angry shit, but sometimes it's ok to feel happy too :)
Sublime gets better and better over time like a fine wine
Sublime was life in high school. There music can get you through the worst of times
This is a song that if u need positive vibes , to help you go through something at the moment, it totally hits, really takes the stress off, just by how positive it is
My all time favorite song right here. I could listen to it every day and never get mad about it. It always puts a smile on my face. ❤️
The whole 40 oz. To freedom album has something for everyone. Put that shit on at a party and no one will complain about the whole joint playing!
Yay!!! I'm so glad you guys are doing more Sublime 😊
You have but scratched the surface of Sublime, one of my favorite bands. Don't Push, What Happened, really the whole .40 oz to freedom album is stellar.
Everyone should be grateful for you guys putting out such entertaining reactions!! Thanks guys!!
That chill feelin you get from Sublime is due to the reggae influence.. Bradley liked reggae and Sublime is a fusion of reggae/rock/hip-hop, which were the genres Bradley enjoyed most.. Why their sound is so unique... RIP Bradley!
Imagine a world where Bradley is still hear….. so chill.
i grew up on the beach in Florida. Sublime is very much the soundtrack of my teenage years. sublime always takes me back to smoking a fat joint with my homies driving to beach to go surfing. sublime was always on as we drove to the beach.
You were right about the Reggae influence. They grew up on Reggae and Punk Rock and their music is a sort of fusion of the two along with some hip hop.
This was on a BMX game for the ps2 and as a kid I had no clue how iconic this song would be
I can't listen to this song without having flashbacks to hearing it every time I played Matt Hoffman's BMX game on my Dreamcast lol
I think this is all about what you choose to focus on. If you focus on light, you can see it even in the darkest places. If you focus on the dark, you miss all the light there was.
More sublime for Brad! 🤣
I listened to their entire catalog of music on repeat in HS for the happy vibes and they’re still one of my favorite bands.
So, from the ending conversation, I'm getting that we need to find Metal song with a happy message for Brad. 😁😎
Great review guys... Sublime forever 😉👍💛
ahh this brings me back to growing up in socal in the 90's. they are the quintessential socal vibe.
Brad was a modern day prophet. He saw the world as it really is and reflected it back in his music. The pain of that fed his addiction and ultimately killed him.
Needed to hear some happy music today. Thanks guys.
40oz to freedom, Bad Fish, Summertime, Wrong way... so many good songs
I think you would both love their song April 29th, 1992. Its such a great story during some riots. I mentioned Burrito and Wrong Way (Def an upfront warning on the storyline) in another video of yours....great band! Keep on rockin the videos, love the positivity!
I went to college in 1997 in san diego, this album and sublimes 40oz to freedom were everywhere.
You have a great outlook guys… much love 👍🏻 great reactions
“You should feel happy because it’s worse to not feel happy so be happy.”
Life in a nutshell.
Sublime is a good cross between Hip Hop and Ska/Punk
This type of music is called Ska… reggae and funk
That's the great thing about 90s Alternative Rock, it combined all sorts of genres in awesome ways
U guys are the best .great reaction to music n the lyrics
Life improves when you learn that you are the master of your own emotional state and can consciously chose how to feel.
Of course various speed bumps along the way can be jarring depending how big they are and hard you hit them. 👍
you can choose how to assess an emotional event. your mind directs the processing of your emotion. If you feel something you don't want to.. you cannot ignore it away and call it something else.. and that's what you're talking about. People are creating their own realities, abandoning the earthly reality...and now everyone exists in their own little tinkerbellevilles wondering why they're lonely lol
I am so glad I got to see Bradley Nowell with Sublime back in the early 90's. They were on the verge of creating a new sound of reggae ska rock. His death was such a loss. My friend dragged me to their show bc I had never heard of them and had to work the next day. The second they took the stage, I was drawn to his voice and their new sound. Instant life changer.🙏🏽
love you guys. You guys are pretty in tune with each other and enjoy your input on songs. Wish you guys a long and happy relationship. Feel blessed to have each other
Every song Sublime made with Bradly was exceptional and spoke truth for many people…. Sobriety, addiction, love and hate.
"Glass half full, Glass half empty" still has something in it either way.
Brad, you are dropping some wisdom and truth bombs in this one! Same with the first Sublime video. These are some of your best.
Sublime ALWAYS puts me in a good mood love this band . Super underrated
Another great song is “Doin’ time”
I ask 'why' a lot.. it's nice to know things but I get that sometimes, the only answer is 'cuz' and it's hard to accept it sometimes.
Edit: and cannot hit that like button enough, you two had some great convo here
Just glad we are learning what Brad can roll with.
THIS WAS THE JAM!!!! EVERYONE IN LONG BEACH WAS VIBIN TONTHIS SONG FOREVER! I BET SOME PEOPLE ARE STILL VIBIN TO IT.
"Bad Fish" has always been one of my favs of theirs.
DATE RAPE is their best...
Keep going with Sublime reactions. They are great!
The singer Bradley grew up in a dominantly spanish neighbourhood. This is why you hear a lot of spanish used in his lyrics.
Sublime is one of my favorite bands of my youth. Around this time there was an explosion of "underground music" that surfers, skaters etc. all gravitated towards and they are all bands that broke mainstream music types. Everyone always tried to say this band is Ska, its Punk, its Reggae, its So-Cal, Ska-Core, Ska-Punk and it goes on and on. All of these bands had an influence of traditional punk, ska, reggae, blues, jazz & rock. They all have these same type of roots but some lean heavier into certain aspects. You had bands like Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, No Doubt, Sublime, NOFX, Mustard Plug, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Goldfinger, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Buck-O-Nine and so many others that all had those roots & influences merged into this Ska/Punk revival in the 90's and lead to alot of fun and great music. They all had their unique sounds because of the variety you can get just by the different horn sections the groups used. About the only lines in the sand that people would draw on what type of music it was if it had Horns it was some type of Ska, if it didn't it was some type of Punk and even that was debated in some cases. This type of music is a rabbit hole all on its own.
Sublime was so good ,Love them
Just real talent. Just gooooood stuff! This entire album offers a bit of magic for so many. Enjoy!
Y’all are one of the only reaction channels I actually return to. Keep it up.
Awesome reactions ,im hooked, keep doing them....
It feels better to be happy. That’s why. Simple and profound.
Sublime has been in my life since the mid 90s. Real big with the stoner circles. A very underrated song is Scarlett Begonias, a cover of an old Greatful Dead song.
LOVE THIS CHANNEL
I didn't expect to f with a comment on a reaction video so heavily, but your statement on it feeling worse to be unhappy really resonated.
I live by the motto no matter how bad my life is,there is somebody else having a worse day.. also gratitude for everything good and bad, and I tell myself how much I love ME! It’s the secret to a happy life
This song takes me back to the days of playing Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX on PS1! Childhood memories of the early 2000’s before technology started to take over is the absolute best.
Fun fact, that song was the song for the first level of Dave Mirra pro bmx (backyard)
Broooooo. That's the first place I heard the song. I didn't expect it, but it became my all time favorite song and still is like 25 years later. Deftones also became one of my favorite bands. Same with Chevelle
Fabulous song. Thanks.
One of my favorite songs from the old ass Dave Mirra BMX game!
Be grateful for the day because it’s the PRESENT
Gratitude is the cornerstone of character. If you are not grateful you will never be happy or satisfied.
Aye my boi, yes be grateful always yaaa
Sublime is a mixture of punk rock, rap and raggae.
Back then people were more happy cause the media wasn't trying to separate us so hard like they do today.
It’s not the media, it’s the stupid people that listen to media are the one separating everyone lol.
Social media wasn’t a thing. That’s the difference
@@j.j.6327 what you talking about? That’s all it was back then before the internet was created. All you have is news and newspapers. Media was a big thing back then just people didn’t take seriously as they do now.
Idk if people were more happy...Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose right after this album came out...most happy people aren't addicted to heroin
@@LastExile123 so you saying if you doing drugs you're "unhappy" ? Don't confuse movies with real life my dude lol. Doing drugs doesn't mean you're unhappy. It means you like the feel from being high all the time. Its like adrenaline junkies. They do crazy stuff to feel that Rush of blood flowing through their body.
It's Ska, a relative of reggae. My favorite Ska band was The Specials. You'll love anything by them. Also, Madness, The English Beat, The Beat, Rancid. Those could all be in the Ska family.
Rancid is punk…
@@fergusscruffypants3025 Well, we can beg to differ. I can see you placing them in that category. It was pretty fluid back then but I'd say they were way more Ska than Punk. But I might suggest you're correct, they are on the edges of Ska ;)
Rancid was in the punk section of every music store I’ve shopped at (have ALL of their stuff along with late 70’s early 80’s punk stuff…Black Flag, The Misfits, The Dead Kennedy’s, etc. The Dead Milkmen (punk/ska), The Mighty, Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish were definitely SKA!
@@fergusscruffypants3025 I normally don't get responses so well thought....But, gotta be honest, In my record collection Rancid was always right next to Madness. ;) Sorry.
@@fergusscruffypants3025 On a side note I saw the Specials in a very small venue in 1980
Dont forget this band was out in the late 90s early 2000s also the US was full of love and peace it was a new generation's Woodstock year round then too
Sublime was rock, reggae, ska, punk and everything heavily influenced by urban genres like rap. I feel so sad when I see Bradley with Lou Dog, the love of his life. Also, I appreciate today because I have it, without thinking that I had it yesterday and I will or will not have it tomorrow, I'm just glad to be here.
The lead singer Bradley was taken on vacation to Jamaica when he was a kid and fell in love with reggae music.
You can hear such samples in lyrics and vocal cadences as Barrington Levy (she's mine)) Tenor Saw (roll call) and Aswad ( Roots rocking) and many more.
There are other influence was the bad brains who mixed punk rock with traditional roots reggae and some dancehall.
The bad brains are on the Mount Rushmore of Afro punk! Not to mention all punk rock music.
