“It seems like people get afraid of a certain music if they can't pigeonhole it to their satisfaction. Good music is good music, and that should be enough for anybody.”
- Bradley Nowell -
RIP Bradley 🙏
Like fishbone ;)
@@EbolaSandwichSKA the best
@@EbolaSandwich I saw them open for Primus back in the day.
🎶🎺🎣🦴✌️
Fishbone, that is, not Sublime.
Sublime is just Sublime. No way to pinpoint. Rock, rap, reggae, a little jazz. Just boss!
It's ska.
I'm telling you, their genre is just Sublime.
Yep. Just one of those bands like Beastie Boys. They ARE the genre.
Honestly thats very true. When you hear someone talk about that style they always say "kinda like Sublime"
Wurd.
Sure... if you just ignore the hell out of the entire ska-punk genre, i guess.
@@belewda true though, it’s a brand of ska. Their own brand. Ska is pretty varied, but with mostly the same vibes.
And louie was brads beloved Dalmatian. For years he never went ANYWHERE without him. If a place didn't allow dogs.. he wouldn't go. Louie even sat on stage for every single concert
He liked to bite famous people too. He bit Gwen Stefani😂
And apparently it smelled like Louie inside his van.
@@kuanged lol
Louie was a sweetie if ya treated him right!! 😆😆😆
Looooo doooggggg!!! 😭😭😭😭
I got to see Sublime before they were Sublime. Saw them at a backyard party in Long Beach. Didn’t know who they were at the time. I just know I couldn’t get over how unbelievably good they were.
I've seen them with Rome twice, sadly never got to see Bradley.
That's me with Puddle of Mudd. I knew Puddle of Mudd before they were like famous long before they were famous probably a couple years and Wes scantlin and I stayed friends his entire time being famous. I still have his phone number in my phone and call him like once every six months or so. Just to check in you know make sure everything's going okay. I dated his best friend in high school who was significantly older than I was at the time I was like 16 or 17 maybe and his best friend was like 30 I think. Something like that somewhere in that range. Which sounds super creepy and now it certainly is super creepy but at the time I was like sold he was a rocker and that was like something for me that was like a big deal because I was 16 and 17 and didn't have any rocker buddies so yeah despite the fact that the he was 12 or 13 or 14 years older than me I had a huge relationship with him that lasted like a year-and-a-half. Upside is I got to meet Wes scantlin and he and I are still friends so that's saying something. But God forbid if I ever had kids I would never let my sixteen-year-old even dare to dream about dating a 30 or 31 year-old ew ew ew LMAO
Mastodon, for me. My friends and I ran a shitty little venue in a small southern Minnesota town, and we got Mastodon to play while they were still shopping around their infamous 9 song demo. Still have a copy of it.
i used to hang out with Brad at the Potholder in Long Beach I used to live above the resturant
Early 90s, was a student at USC and they played a party that I attended at CS-Fullerton! They blew us away. Esp me and my friends who were from Texas. Their music was just incredible!
Summertime was written by Ira Gershwin for a play called porgy and Bess in the early 1900's it's been covered by tons of artists ever since. Lots of the greats.
Thank you.
Bradley is the Boss DJ, he samples, covers, mixes, matches, scratches and adds his own stuff. He was a true lover of great art and music nerd. Love that y'all caught this side of Sublime's music, most the reactions don't.
Louie has a great voice too...some great barks in there.
This song is a *masterpiece* - it has an aged one day since I first heard it back in the mid 90s.
Sublime is from Long Beach, California. The band was three members: Bradley Nowell (vocals, guitar), Bud Gaugh (drums), and Eric Wilson (bass guitar) there music is mix of reggae and dub, Ska, punk, progressive rock, acoustic rock, hip-hop. On May 25, 1996, two months before Sublime released their self-titled third album, Brad Nowell just got out of a record company sponsored rehab, died of a heroin overdose after a show in Petaluma, California.
And got married and had a kid.
That's usually how it happens, people go to rehab or jail, get out and try to do the same amount they were doing before they went in and die, that's how a friend of mine went. RIP Matthew Eugene Head.
Oooo, y'all are on a roll! "Waiting for My Ruca" slaaaaaaps!
RIP Bradley + Lou Dog xx
Hell yeah
cosign
This is my favorite Sublime song.
Ska is a word not an acronym. It's a style of music. It originated in 1950 from Jamaica. Ska was a precursor to reggae.
RIP Brad💜😪
They should listen to Come On by the Busters…great song, and sort of explains the history of ska (up to that point in time, anyway).
Man its cool seeing yall do multiple sublime songs. Im 39 and have been a huge sublime fan since my early teens. They have a ton of awesome music that nobody has ever heard. Yall should do their song "Waiting for my Ruca" next
i used to have a boom box that woke me up with this song...it's just great to wake up to, always reppin his dog
lol this was the song that let me know I was up too late. Played it every night, if I could get the bowl packed by the end of waiting for my rucca I was cool 😎
I just love that he mentions his dog as his partner in crime in some songs. 🐕🦺🤙
Sublime STILL catching even clued-in music people flat-footed even 30 years after. BRUH that’s real music ♥️
Always a fan of “Bad Fish” from this band.
"Are you a bad fish too?"..... Love it!
always makes me kind of sad because of how Bradley passed away
I agree
One of their best, if not the best
I heard a bad fish is someone who gets you to do heroin or gets u back on heroin.
Reggae Rock Rap Ska and PUNK. Just wait it’s coming, there is no one like these guys!
That’s the relationship- he loves her hard, she treats him like shit. Lol
Lovin the sublime reactions, I still listen to there albums there music never gets old.
Sublime does so much of the "sampling" of old music. Its fantastic! So many hidden gems in there.
"Is this verbatim?"
Yes, Ella Fitzgerald was singing about the LBC.
Yeah but the summertime thing is in Ella Fitzgerald that's Billie Holiday by way of George something in 1936 before I even dream to sing about summertime so just saying. And the summertime is usually what people referred to not the LBC part
@@meghanschuler4739 George "something"? You mean George Gershwin, the composer of the song Summertime for his musical Porgy and Bess? Just to be sure we're talking about the same thing and not having a serious discussion about a '90s pop group sampling Gershwin.
Etta James doing kickflips
Dude prolly don’t even know what LBC is
😂
One of my favorite bands of all time. When you hear him say Louis or Louis dog in almost every one of his songs, he’s talking about his Dalmatian. His dog, Lu dog. Bradley died of a heroin overdose in 95 or 96 I believe.
I love the beat of this song! Sublime is the best!
It's a super toxic relationship. Loving your sublime reactions.
Sublime is one of my top 3 bands. If I'm in a bad mood and I listen to them no matter what song I'll be in a 100% better mood. One of my favorite songs is 40oz to freedom you guys should check that out
Long time sublime fan here! I'm really enjoying your videos! Thanks for sharing. The beauty of art interpretation is it can mean different things to different people at different times. It's neat to hear other people's perspective. Especially after a first time listen. Very cool. Keep up the good work!
I'm glad Lex has a good grasp of music knowledge and history. I even forgot it was a partial cover of Etta James' Summertime!
My suggestion is “Garden Grove” or “Jailhouse” for your next Sublime song.
Both amazing
Jailhouse is hands down my favorite sublime song ever made
I love that they say they "took a trip" to Garden Grove. Long Beach and Garden Grove are separated by Seal Beach/Los Alamitos. There's maybe 3 miles from border to border.
@@scottfrench4139 That’s funny. I didn’t know that. 😂😂😂
My wife grew up in Garden Grove and every time she mentions it, I can't help but think of that song.
Ultimate dusk, hot summer evening song this. Just grooving sat there as the room starts to go from sunlit to that light summer violet. Same as Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack. A song that plays when everyone's left.
The lyrics tell of a cheating girlfriend, whose infidelities and poor treatment of her lover makes him feel like he is in prison.
There’s a limited edition release in Europe of “Doin Time” that has 6 renditions done. They’re so good. But I’ve always loved sublime so…
😆🤣😆😆 It's just Sublime.... That's it and there is really nothing like it... Sublime forever 🤙✌️
Love you guys!!! Thanks for posting this jam reaction!!! I saw Sublime way back in the day in Long Beach!!! I’m old as balls. Good to see you young peeps getting into Sublime awesome guys. Peace and ❤️🕺
Sublime was and is still ahead of the music, they were great back then and if they came out today they would be just as great!! They were special!
Ska - it's pronounced skah. One word. It stems from a blend of reggae, rock, and sometimes punk. A lot of Ska bands are a little more upbeat in feel - there's often horns. Sublime is unique in that their mainstream stuff tends to also have a hip hop element. But they started as more of a punk band.
Ska is something that some bands easily fit into, like when you hear it you go oh that's Ska. But some are sort of on the outskirts of it, like sublime.
Ska is actually an earlier genre than reggae, and was Jamaican musicians mixing the r&b and doo-wop and American soul they were hearing with mento and Jamaican music. Rock-steady, lover’s rock, reggae and dub then evolved out of ska.
They're not really Ska man. Sublime can't be held down by that one category.
@@patrickcraig8022 that's awesome. Thanks for the info!
Two Tone is the foundation
Ska involves horns, amongst other instruments, last I checked. Don't think Sublime has a brass section in most, if any, of their songs.
It made me sooooo happy that you guys like Sublime. 😍🥰 I was worried for a minute after listening to Wrong way. 😆 lol they are so unique and in a class of their own.
I think it was originally covered by Billie Holiday and later by Janis Joplin, among others. Sublime sampled the tune and the chorus and put their own spin on it.
One of the best bands of all time. Damn. My high school days were dope
Growin up with this music, watching people react and enjoy is so cool.
"Seed", "don't push", "get out" "5446 that's my number/Ball And chain", "ebin", "what happened", "DJ's", "jailhouse", "under my voodoo", "April 29, 1992", "badgish"... sublime got so many dope songs. So sad he OD'd so early in his career. Would love to see what he be doing now... R.I.P. Brad
Don't push is the sound of being on heroin on a hot summer day...
Damn, I love this song. Top to bottom.
sublime, Crazy fools, ballad of jhonny butt, scarlett boganias. all day baby
Y'all are great, thank you!
I saw Sublime in Denver in the 90s with Skankin Pickle, Guttermouth and Pinheads Circus!!! Awesome show!!!!!
I'd suggest "Let's Go Get Stoned", "Garden Grove" or "Badfish" they are all great songs and very accessible to the general public.
You guys probably would like most of their stuff, same for anyone reading this far, but some more standouts:
"Ballad of Johnny Butt"
"Waiting for my Rucca"
"Wrong Way"
"Seed"
"Work that We Do"
"STP"
"Right Back"
"5446/Ball & Chain"
"Great Stone"
"Foolish Fool"
"Ebin"
"Same in the End"
"Date R@pe"
"40oz To Freedom"
"DJ's"
"Under My Voodoo"
Also, the Stand By Your Van live album is criminally underrated and even older fans sleep on it. I prefer the live versions of several songs
It was fun to watch you guys vibe out to Sublime and discover their style.
not sure if anyones mentioned this yet, but since you've also done a lot of Beastie Boys reactions as well, that sample getting scratched during the chorus is them "do it like this in the place to be"
You two are lovely. I enjoyed watching you discover one of my favorite bands. My fav is 5446 that's my number / ball and chain. For SKA... Try Hepcat, The Toasters, Reel Big Fish... a wonderful genre. Enjoy.
Love that one! I was always taught that Boy meets girl, fall in love and forget the world, 9 months later baby on its way kiss him on the cheek and that's okay!!!!
Yo ... Sublime is one of my all time favorite bands, and this song still gives me goosebumps when I hear it
This is my absolute favorite Sublime track- I'm a musician today because of this one track I heard as a kid. Sublime is a genre unto themselves
This song borrows from "Summertime" from a popular 1930s musical called Porgy & Bess. Also, the song is actually about something more than just a bad relationship his girl -- they had originally replaced the word "Summertime" with "Doin' Time," hence the title. However, the copyright owners of the original version withheld their permission to use the song until they changed it back to "Summertime."
Ska refers to the upstroke of the guitar on the up beat. Its basically regea. Its just a term that sound like what that guitar sound is. It was huge in the 90s. Sublime, No Doubt, Might Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, Goldfinger, and countless others.
It still breaks my heart that Bradley (lead singer of Sublime) died RIGHT before this album was released. Sublime found fame AFTER they’d been disbanded by his untimely death. I’m so glad I was one of the young weirdo’s who loved those 90’s ska beach concerts and got to see and hang with these folks. Only saving grace to Sublime going platinum after Bradly died was that his infant son had that $$ to rely on. Always will remember sitting on Venice Beach with Bradley and Louie!! If ya don’t know…Louie was his beloved dog and features in many of their lyrics and samples💗💗💗
Chester's death hits me harder, but it was tough when we lost Bradley
I'm new to your UA-cam channel but I'm really digging the vibes you two are putting out. As a massive Sublime fan a few songs that I would definitely check out are Garden Grove, New Song, 54-46 was my Number/ Ball and Chain (it's a reimagining of a Toots and the Maytals song), or Badfish.
Should definitely check out “Great Hits”, “S.T.P”, and “Seed”. All their songs are great!
Or Same in the end - ua-cam.com/video/XINAJ7jgg6Y/v-deo.html
@@paulvanwens2588 “Sunday morning hold church down at the bar!” Amazing!
Love Sublime. Was in highschool when they were around, Bradley was a genius R I P. Some of my favorite songs were Paddle Out and Bad Fish. Another great band from that era were Kottonmouth Kings.
Sublime is a feeling ya dig...
Can’t wait till you guys go live again I have so many recommendations since you guys are so down to earth and open with different music. I’ll try to settle down but I’ve been drinking so no promises
New to your channel but a huge Sublime fan. Happy to see new fans being made.
LOVE.THIS.TRACK
Many of Brad's songs have a surface meaning but are really about his relationship with heroin and some songs he just puts it right out there
Your editing is getting really good fam.
Beastie Boys rep in the hook.
This whole album just reminds me of 8th grade and my freshman year of high school
Sublime is such a vibe! 🔥
I fuckin love Sublime didn’t even know y’all reviewed them before !! I had a chance to see sublime with Rome and it was still fuckin lit...or maybe I was just high then a mf 🤣🤣🤣
Great Pick… been 1 of my faves for years
Love yalls channel!
Thanks for another good reaction. So, this borrows concepts from Gershwin's "Summertime", as Lex pointed out. If you want to get even more meta, Lana Del Ray does a cover of this version
That Lana Del Ray cover is just a big huge MEH. It ain't bad it ain't great, it exists
Janis Joplin's version is the best that I've heard. It's brought me to tears a few times. It just wails. The vocals, the guitars. It's incredible.
And The Zombies, no? And Morcheeba, I think.
Remember how you noticed he was doing a cover, kind of, of Summer Time the old school song? Well that line about 'what am i gonna be doing for a while, said i'm gonna play with myself? Show them we've come off the shelf?"
Well thats from one of the reggae OG's, Ini Kamoze. He did that song 'here come's the hot stepper"
but that play with myself line is from 'jump for jah'
ua-cam.com/video/bM06E2ZIim4/v-deo.html 3 minutes and 3 seonds see?
seriously, like 65% of sublimes music is covers or samples
How bout some MORPHINE: "Bueno bueno." Your jazz roots will love this.
I have to second that. Lol
Morphine………yes yes and yes.
Great suggestion! I don't believe I have seen anyone suggest Morphine on any of the reaction channels.
Show me another "Rock" band with a two-string bass!
Top floor bottom buzzer.
One of the greatest singer/ Songwriters/ and Composers ever in my opinion. Though not my all time favorite groups, I absolutely love this Music.🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
It's called a *sample* It can be used in many ways.
Sublime will even take 3 different songs and sample them in one.
They are fantastic! 40 oz to freedom is my favorite release! Waaay ahead of it's time!
I realize you have to do the original, but the official Wyclef Jean remix is a much deeper, occasionally creepier groove/vibe. Especially the part about holding her head underwater. And he highlights the "Rawwrrr".
The genre is Ska (Reggae Rock)
OK, time to check out some 311. The kings of reggae, rock, rap. Check out Lose by 311!
Love this song, especially in the summertime.
I’d love to hear you guys react to Digable Planets...maybe Pacifics or Dial 7 (Creamy Spies) or Jettin’. Or their biggest hit, Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat). Nobody reacts to these guys, and they’re so unique.
Also- eponymous just means self-titled in this case.
You guys are absolutely awesome together..
Great track, they have a remix of this featuring The Pharcyde that's amazing as well
Everything Sublime ever did was pure genius.
Officially their genre is ska which is a mix of punk and reggae. But in the end they’re a jam band that does their own thing, and that thing is fucking sweet as shit.
Check out Don’t Push, STP, Jailhouse, KRS-One, Slow Ride, 40oz to Freedom, DJs, Badfish, Wrong Way, etc by Sublime
Ska is pronounced like “skah” with an ah not ay. It’s a genre that originated in Jamaica and is the precursor to reggae
They just need to do them all. The whole catalogue.
"It's about his girl is a HO HO HOOOOOO!" LOL!
Badfish best song!!! And yes Sublime is their own genre!! They’re rock, rap, Ska, Punk, reggae. And every other genre all together rolled in one
They made a whole album in their garage! These guys are the shit! Period
Don't forget the sample they use by the beastie boys!
This song actually is a sample. It samples Herbie Mann's version of "Summertime" in addition to Beastie Boys. The drum beat is also a sample.
This is an interview with Ras MG (mentioned in the song) about how they pieced the song together. At the end it has Pharcyde rapping over the song, that was one of the remixes that came out after Brad died.
ua-cam.com/video/qdOUzlumOQc/v-deo.html
Ska is not an acronym, it's a style. Sublime is just Sublime. No genre. Elements of punk, rap, rock, reggae, ska, and more. RIP Bradley
She's spot on as always
i can feel the summer heat from this song
lol I’d play this album every night in high school. If I heard this, I knew I was up too late
Incredibly satisfying react 🌞
Ska! It's a genre of music that is an offshoot of Caribbean and reggae music. It started in the Caribbean and actually became popular in England along side Punk in the 70s and started to die off again in the 80s. Ska and Ska/punk made a comeback in the late 90s and early 00s in the states. Sublime is known for mixing elements of Ska, Jazz, Reggae and Hip Hop.
Sublime is definitely a rabbit hole worth going down.
Louie is Bradley the singers dog. Lou Dog went everywhere with them, you can see him on stage during the few live performances on youtube before Bradley passed away.
The next logical step would probably be some Beck. 😁😁😁
He’s talking about it as a past tense relationship… something he’s already been through. He’s just painting a picture of how the dynamics were and how, contrasting how some people stay in relationships past their expiration dates
Ska is originally from Jamaica in the 50s (before Reggae). It has had several revivals or waves. What is considered the 2nd wave of Ska happened in the UK in the 80s with groups like UB40. The third wave of Ska was in the 90s on the west coast of the US which brought us groups like Sublime, Reel Big Fish, and many others.
Ate a lot of acid with this album in the late 90's.
8:03 the genre is Ska and they were the masters of it. No Doubt (Gwen Stefani’s band in the 90s). Same time period. Lead singer of Sublime ODed before this album released and they made it big.
I think it's literal, doin' time with his woman, the ol' ball an chain yo!
To get their actual vibe you have to listen to all their songs they're a bit of Reggae mixed with hip hop and some punk as well
