    Danny Boyle requested permission to shut down London but was denied. Instead, they were granted permission to film in early hours of the morning, when the filming would not disrupt the city. Scenes at the beginning were at 4 a.m.

      @@OfficialMediaKnights They put out leaflets/request asking for co-operation from locals, and mostly got it. They disrupted each location for maybe 10 minutes whilst they filmed everything handheld cameras and little other equipment so they could get out of the way and let the city get on with it. Many people including one of my friends simply took an alternate route to avoid the area. Of course, people travelling into London from outside the area would have had no idea.
      I suppose it's fortunate so many Londoners use the Tube. If they had waited 2 years, the London Congestion Charge (for cars) would have reduced traffic during filming further.

    I dont know if its been mentioned but i think Jim was relatively safe / invisible to the zombies as he was hunting down the soldiers because he was so filled with actual rage he blended in more. Thats what i took from it anyways. zombies smell fear i guess but not rage, or they ignore rage so they dont cannibalise themselves. Jim being so angry and naturally rage filled while trying to save the girls, allowed him to attract less attention as his body would smell of rage so was similar to the 'rage' infected z's.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  2 дні тому +16

      It’s scary to think about just how fragile our “order” is. If things go this south this quickly the response would really need to be swift and aggressive or else we risk total collapse as we see in these films. It’s actually quite a haunting thing to think about.

      @OfficialMediaKnights It's socially closet than people realize. It happened during Katrina and a few other disasters. I'm not super paranoid, but it's closer to the edge of societal fabric than people realize. Loved this one. You guys nailed it.

    • @jnt6239
      @jnt6239 2 дні тому +2

      Really? I've always seen it as a basic post-apocalyptic concept. Your money becomes useless and revert to barter for goods/services almost immediately. Of course, that assumes you're dealing with friendly folks vs. those who'll just straight up rob you.

    • @cobrian45
      @cobrian45 2 дні тому +3

      @jnt6239 not a specific post-apocalyptic concept. Historically, it has happened so many times, even recently. On both small and large scales. WW2 Deutschmarks, confederate money after the civil war, Katrina as I mentioned. It's right at the edge of the fabric of society. Only our agreement to be civil keeps the monetary system valid.

    • @jnt6239

    The opening scene of Cillian Murphy wandering the REAL LIFE empty streets of London is one of the greatest opening scenes in horror movie history. You can see why it has been copied so many times in shows like "The Walking Dead" or spoofed like in the first paintball episode of "Community".
    Also, according to the writers of the film, the infected are not considered to be "Zombies" in the traditional sense. They are not undead, moreso they are simply affected by a brain-type virus akin to rabies.

    So, one thing that's never explained in the movies is what the Rage actually is, and it's literally that. Its the emotion.
    In the prequel comic, it explains that it was developed as a means to treat violent prisoners and as a method of riot suppression, but it backfired, turning already violent criminals into MUCH more dangerous people. They thought they'd figured it out once they mixed the chemical with the flu and ebola as a means of transportation between people, but it ended up making things much worse.
    The thing about the infected is they're not zombies. They're not dead and they don't eat. Its just people with an INSANE amount of rage inside them, and that rage is always focused at something. You see clearly that some of the infected are still human, like the priest who looks like he's trying to warn Jim before he hits him and even manages to cough at "get out" or Frank telling his daughter to stay away from him, even as he's turning. Even the ones that are too far gone, like Mailer, show some semblence of humanity, like Mailer never specifically targets Jim or the girls, because the target of his anger is the people who chained him up outside.

    • @Eirik_Bloodaxe
      @Eirik_Bloodaxe 2 дні тому +8

      I think the other problem tho is it consumes them so wholly that they don’t eat. And that they use like all of their muscle strength. So they tear themselves apart in the process because the normal inhibitors that stop you from doing that are turned off.

    • @SSD_Penumbra
      @SSD_Penumbra 2 дні тому +4

      @@Eirik_Bloodaxe Nah, they literally just keel over dead because they don't eat or sleep. Its just all consuming rage that keeps them moving. Even the ones in the church were comatose until Jim made nose. Then they woke up.

    The poetry of the "hello" is that Jim says it when he challenges his disbelief that any of this can happen. He says it in the hospital, in the empty city, inside the church, inside the gas station, his nightmare in the countryside... Basically the extreme fear of being left alone in that world, and how quickly he has to deal with it. And he wants to challenge it, this new reality, and just. can't. stop. saying. hello. That's why the "HELLO" in the end is extra powerful -- it's the first time he's said it with hope since everything happened.

      28 Days Later popularized the sprinting zombie and brought them into the forefront of modern zombie horror media moving forward to the present, but it definitely wasn't the first to introduce the idea. There are a lot of arguments out there as to which movie first introduced fast zombies, but the common ones I've seen are 1980's Nightmare City, though that was an Italian movie, and 1968's Night of the Living Dead, though it is argued that the first zombie is actually stumbling really fast rather than running (again, up for debate).

    Fun facts, couple of deleted ideas they almost went with; 1. Originally Jim didn't make it after getting shot and dies when Selena got him to the medical center (a small flash memory in the final movie) and 2. (Drawing boards of this) They got to the checkpoint, Frank was infected, and Jim managed to knock him out and secure him. They go to the house and find it practially deserted except for a single guy locked away with supplies. He tells them there's a way to save Frank by doing a complete blood transfusion. They find out Jim's a match. Then they cut to a scene where the guy lets them in. Hannah is helping Frank move into the area and Selena. Then it cuts to a shot of an operating table with Jim tied to and thrashing about (infected).

  • @solezeta1314
    @solezeta1314 2 дні тому +5

    It's interesting to see that some of the infected still have a level of control in them. Like how the priest didn't immediately charge at Jim at first sight (you can even tell he was trying to fight back his instincts) or how Mailer left Jim alone once freed and only focused on those that imprisoned him.

      The comic book started in 2003, so considering time for pitching, getting the green light, artwork etc, it might have been a coincidence. It's a convenient way to skip straight to destroyed world but at the same time keep the protagonist in the dark for the audience to identify with.

      @@Cotsos88yeah, Robert Kirkman has said in an interview that he saw 28 Days Later a few weeks before the first issue of The Walking Dead came out, and couldn't believe that they'd done the same thing. Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead comics, has said that it was a total coincidence. 28 Days Later wasn't released in the US until June 2003, and the first issue of TWD was released in Oct 2003. • @batmanvsjoker7725

    The London scenes in the opening is frankly a huge achievement in filmmaking. Not just because of how it's shot, but because allegedly, they shot it early and managed to get like 1000 people to not come in the areas we saw. I also like how the OST seemed to get more intense as the sequence goes on, like it was slowly dawning on him that while he was in a coma, Britain basically went to shit.
    It's literally just a guy walking in an isolated London yet it's so brilliant.

      >>> *Production Spoiler Below* for those interested:

      The entire film was shot in one continuous take, and I think it was really well done, and that nature of its production really enhanced my admiration for the performances and clever cinematography. I'm very encouraging and supportive of creative projects in a seemingly more and more formulaic industry. Hope anyone here that's going off of this recommendation likes the film!

    They're fighting people who have now little to no control over their rage at all. We saw in the movie that the "un-infected" are just as capable of rage as they are, they're just more controlled.

Well, we must now catch up and watch 28 weeks later, not sure why we didn't watch it when it released but having revisited the trailer I think it was that it looked too Hollywood, moving away from the more intimate, personal story. This movie was so iconic to me. I was a zombie everything junkie as a child and this movie was something that stuck with me as a must rewatch almost every other year. Then 28 weeks later became my favorite of the 2 just bc of plot and action that you guys will see. I can't wait for you guys to react to 28 Weeks and I think I'll slip back into the cultish community for these when 28 Years comes out.

    This is a fantastic film when it comes to the zombie genre. The way they shot it and the fact that were allowed to film in actual London is what makes the film feel so much more realistic and disturbing seeing a place like London so empty of civilization. Great reaction and commentary, you have earned a subscriber. I saw that you have done Saving Private Ryan and I would higly recommend doing Black Hawk Down. It is up there with Saving Private Ryan as one of the best war films to this day.

    Thank you for the reaction. This is the zombie movie to rule them all. It is dark - but not so dark that you are broken after, and it have so much hope, and love ind it, AND character development.I love that you notice the difference between the anger and aggression shown - I thought it was so telling that we all think violence is so wrong - until Jim comes to rescue them - and you can't help but cheer for his violence , because he does it to protect. (at least that's my opinion)
    Thanks again and Happy New Year

    This is the most real zombie movie there is, in my opinion. Because it’s not really about zombies; it’s about humans and humanity. Zombies are just the backdrop to showcase the messages the movie is really delivering. Brilliantly done.

    I remember when this movie first came out, too. It was either my first or second year of college, and remember I went out to see it with a couple of my classmates at the time. I remember it was my first real dose of British horror, as I don't recall watching much (if any) of it before. When we were leaving the theater, I remember saying some quip about how "those Brits do horror really well," because man, I remember this movie really stuck with me for a few days afterwards because of how haunting it was...particularly the dad's infection and sudden death. I think that and the tunnel scene with the rats running away from the infected were the parts of the movie that stuck with me the most. That tunnel scene played right into the phobias I already had/have with getting stuck in tunnels, so it freaked me out beyond belief. It was brilliant...

    28 Days Later takes a lot of inspiration for it's opening act, from the the New Zealand film "The Quiet Earth". A real underrated classic of Australian cinema which I highly recommend. It's not a zombie film, but it is a sci-fi with a really crazy atmosphere.

    I remember when this came out. My wife (gf at the time) and I went to see it in the theater, fresh out of hs. Then, we saw 28 weeks later. We went to see Nosferatu last Friday and saw the trailer for 28 Years Later! We got super excited!

    The main character "Jim" is played by Cillian Murphy who also played Scarecrow in the Dark Knight movies, and many other movies.
