I think the two go hand-in-hand. A balance of giving to others & also to ourselves. Feeling 'obliged' to 'serve' is different to BEing someone who receives positively from the experience of giving.

Me too, at 60 yo, I follow A Course in Miracles that says: “I am the light of the world”, as I learn to release judgement and criticism of myself and others- I become lighter- this is a gift for everyone, and I keep myself in the equation. @@merrykaczmarek3757 yes i like that Russell included that as being the first thing to be aware of - being of importance to your self - (rather than how can i look good /get approval /etc) from others. i have always been a very generous person , but i grew up in an abusive environment which i was still "in " because it was my family until my early 50's - only now - at age 60 faced with the fears of the lockdowns and all that stuff means - that i decided NOW i have to find balance and peace. i started meditating again - and watching Russell's vid's a year plus ago in the first lockdown - and thought well, there is what i have been needing to do. Be real, be balanced, and work at that . Now when someone lies to me or tries to take advantage i just quickly and simply say "i do not have time for those games in my life, so please go away."

‘It is in giving that we receive’. That’s what my Catholic upbringing has taught me. I enjoy helping others. It’s in my nature, especially when people are in pain. My deepest source of pain however, and one I find hardest to reconcile, is when I am not supported the way I need from others during difficult times. My mum on the other hand is truly inspiring and rarely feels sorry for herself. She is able to dig down deep into her religion as a source of strength during difficult times...

Here's my story of going from feeling like my lifes work had no value, to joyfully seeking purpose! I had a stroke and couldn't work, when I returned to work because I had a stroke I lost 20 years worth of pay increases inspite of no loss of skill. I became very depressed & yet somehow guilted into taking this! Then I broke down & could no longer suffer this injustice! In fact I had become empowered to walk away from welding, I'm not rewarding profit driven greed with my 30+ years of experience! I don't know what my next move is, but I feel like I get to keep my soul. Winning my self respect back is better than having a trade!

Physically, I'm pretty much a nobody who drives an old pickup truck on dusty roads in the backcountry of nowhere.
But metaphysically, I am a space cowboy called the Lone Ranger and I have taken command of a lightship. Like the Blues Brothers I'm on a mission from god.
My "Mission Impossible" is to engage the supernova function on my lightship in order to fill a giant a**hole in space called ignorance (greed) with light (love)...so that it's darkness (misery, murder, mass shootings, suicides, war, etc.) goes away and it's heavy gravitational pull stops sucking the joy out of life.
Then life can become a celebration with joy spilling out of the smiles of everyone. Like Love (god) intended for life to be in the first place.
Because Love (god) spent billions of years creating this paradise planet lifeboat so that her miraculous works of fine art called "life" have a beautiful place to "be".
Love didn't spend so much time creating this paradise planet lifeboat to be depreciated, hated, polluted and destroyed in a brief moment by hostile alien vampires (greed) and their ignorance (hate).

Love it :) the only part I disagree with is about hate. I think hate is just a symptom of having been hurt, and can be mended with love. For me the alien is the paradigm of structure where people are taught to have power over others/things, and homogeneity...I don't know where these concepts came from. I think we are capable of operating via paradigms of service/caretakership, empowerment and diversity instead...

That's great advice for people who are self-centered and separated from the source, but there are a lot of people that are the other way, full of purpose and spirit but in denial of their body and own needs, so they can't perform to help the world. When they feel good about something, they think they are being selfish. One can only find purpose when the two sides are in balance and you allow to be moved by joy instead of pain and suffering. If we all find what brings us joy (and I mean the joy that comes from the soul, not the one that comes from eating an ice cream:), if we find the joy that makes our hearts vibrate and makes our eyes burst with tears of joy, then we'll find a purpose that serves a higher good. Joy is the sign that we are doing God's work and connected to the source, so bringing to the world what is in heaven.

Perfect video from Russell. One point I’d add is from us self loathers who have had the opposite problem of selfishness he refers to. I grew up in a culture (religious and in my family) where I was told in order to be a good person, I had to give, give, give. If I ever had a concern for myself, or want or need, I was selfish. I’ve had to heal that and have needed to learn to have more love for myself and assert myself more, in order to have an authentic purpose in community. But I’ve have been trying to “find my purpose” for years. I felt I could see and experience external truths easily, but had so much difficulty with clarity of my Self. Gabor Mate helped me with the How’s initially… for example realizing that clearing away my self limiting beliefs, false beliefs, coping mechanisms (like peeling away onion layers), only then I’d be left with my authentic self and find my purpose. And that purpose can change over time, but analyzing what life has been trying to teach me in my struggles is extremely helpful. It is not to be found by learning more from external sources. There is much more to this topic I think someone should right a book about it.

From what I have realized service to others is what will create purpose and balance within oneself. It's not all about what can I give/do for me... example; Where am I lacking? We're too focused on me, me, me. Service will give one a wonderful balance, as well a sense of purpose. There are so many teenagers/youth right now that need loving guidance. Donating your time to the youth who will become our future is so valuable. If people want purpose? This is a great sense of purpose, a great place to start in service to others, 3 hours a week to start. There's so many children who really needs to have someone to look up to nowadays more than ever. That little bit of time that one might give. Wiuld really make a difference in that child/teenagers life.
In doing this valuable service you are creating such a huge and beautiful ripple effect. Not only those lives that you influence. But you also affect those around you that watch and are learning from your actions.

Me and my partner made a huge shift in our relationship when we fully committed to becoming a multicellular organism. Talking about this concept helped guide us to talk about stuff and begin seeing eachother as a unit and what needed to happen to make that unit strong. we established a mutual understanding that there was no me vs him, that what was good for each of us is what’s best for the multicellular organism. What we do to eachother we do to ourselves. This made us kinder and more compassionate. the commitment also just helped us be less petulant and more mature about grievances, being self aware about how our moods are affecting our ability to communicate or perceptions etc.

I love this question! I was in a long term relationship of 20+ years and now looking back in reflection I feel I understand better where it fell apart. The traditional saying was behind every great man is an even greater woman. To modernise this saying and give a broader perspective to it, I feel it should be; behind every successful relationship Is the willingness give selfless support to another person in such away that it enriches both of your lives. Love is the word that describes what is essentially an action. We can say that we love someone a million times, unless it is backed up by an action that makes the other person feel loved, then it still remains just a word.

I adore this, Russell ... I'm (unwillingly) retired from my lecturing/teaching profession: I need to weave together meaning from the sources you have mentioned to make a rope to hold me fast to purpose, to meaning. When one's engaged fulltime in working for a living, often pleasurable, often demanding, there's no time or need to consider these issues, but now my lifeline often frays to one or two strands and I must re-weave, sometimes daily ... Daily yoga and prayer, time in sea and surf, walking, connecting with friends, writing, painting ... All these help shield me from days of despair.

Dear Russell Brandt, Sir, You are wonderful in your depth. You just need to say that you had a past and that you have reformed and that you are aware of a behavior that had impulse control problems at one time, but now you are different. Thank you, Sincerely, Melinda Aimee Roth

Your so intelligent and I learn new phrases or words every time I watch a vid! You must have a mad high IQ would love to speak to you in real life I’m struggling to find meaning I look how I want but never feel good about myself . Basically I was homeless begging and slept in the woods in a tent on my own for 5 months and in the streets a years and even my own family once walked past me day after day of people doing this and having nothing must have marked me . I have no confidence I don’t like asking for anything and just feel not important like half a man ! All everyone ever says is you look amazing you have a nice body but it makes me feel worse as when I lost that no body gave a damn any advice because you have come from Rock bottom and are amazing now 💯

Russell, you raising awareness of oneness and some of the ideas you're bringing to conversation are so vital. They really help bring into focus what the human experience is. One thing I love watching out of sheer curiosity is the videos of you with your family. To bring a celebrity down to a normal person is its own illusion shattering experience. Although I would love to speak with you personally one day to confirm my thoughts I respect that you are living your life. I watched one of your videos regarding the prochoice movement and I'd really love to see an interview thats more prolife from your perspective. As a self proclaimed omnist, I agree with all of your views of perspective. However, protecting children in the world including the unborn is something I am incredibly passionate about. PLEASE bring this into focus one day. I am going to be subscribing to your luminary channel as well and I would love to come about that conversation from you one day. Love & light to you & your family. 🌼

There is a saying in many 12step programs: "We can only keep what we have by giving it away." The idea being that service is major part of recovery and living a manageable life. And there are lots of ways to serve- it doesn't have to directly impact lots of ppl in order to be considered service, nor is it requisite that I am recognized for having performed an act of service before it can be called such. Picking up litter, or being there to listen and give support someone going thru something really difficult- these are as much acts of service as having a seat on a committee or being a volunteer firefighter. Service can be (but isn't always) accompanied by selfish motives. I get *something* out of being of service. This seems to be true whether I'm focused on that particular motivation or not. I don't have to be desiring to change how I feel, or otherwise desiring to "get something" out of serving in order to get something out of serving. It seems to be the nature of serving. I'm kind of rambling here, but these are some of the things that came to mind when I watched this.

@@lightawake Only by realizing our true self can we see our own worth... and I'm certain there is far more going on here than most would suspect. I think we're serving the purpose of creation in a very direct and powerful way. I think life is far more than just living and I think if one can be one's true self and (choose) to be happy, then grace (just a word) has to follow. Its why we're here. Further, I think that how it works is far simpler than most would suspect. See Ken Wheeler on magnetism. Also see Robert Grant's math, which comes in the back door of Wheeler's magnetism... Also see Fractal Woman (Lori Gardi) on UA-cam when she illustrates Ken Wheeler's aether and the magnelectric nature.

In the end there will always be balance, don’t worry Russel, the world will change according to the collective mind. Sometimes getting people alert from the conspiracies in the world will change their thoughts and directions. It’s better if they connect to the collective mind alone. So purpose is just the path you were born in.

“appetite in relationship with environment is what creates successful mutation and therefore evolution.” it’s absolutely fluid and the problem with how humans conceive their purpose is not only limited by linear thinking but also by the use of the word “change” versus mutation. Our origins are what keep the individual (also defined by) from mutating their personhood. we can’t change without losing part, if not all of our origin, or, memory of.. the appetite of progress is wanted through positive or plus thinking, and never from a lack of a benchmark (origin). time is utterly cruel, but it’s linear, and we are bound by it. there’s simply no awareness of the beauty of our mutations until our memories are erased.
great content! especially during isolation 🙃
