  • It's been at least a month since I've uploaded a UA-cam video. I filmed a couple DIY fails that didn't make the cut to post, so this one was a much needed DIY WIN!
    I have hated these wood-look vinyl windows since I bought my house a few years ago. Now that I know how easy it was to paint them, I wish I had done it a lot sooner!

    Would love an update to this video, maybe you talking about how the paint has held up over the last few months. I’ve always wanted to do this but worried about chipping and making a massive mess.

      Hey Justin! It's held up so well. I was originally worried about when it got warmer that it would chip when having the windows open and closed so often, but so far nothing has chipped or worn off. The only thing I would change is taping off a bigger area. A few days after I filmed this I wiped the counter down and could tell there was some overspray. Then I went over all the cabinets and wiped them off. It wasn't visible just looking at it, but there was a very thin dusting of overspray. I would cover 2x the area I did, and also cover the floors near it. Not sure why I didn't think about the floors! 🤦‍♀️ It all cleaned up fine, but if you want to avoid any clean up then I'd cover more with plastic.

    Of course it depends on the location and environment of the vinyl window (meaning which room, exposure to sun, adverse elements etc), but for optimal adhesion, the general rule for painting any vinyl windows REQUIRES giving them a quick sand with fine 200 grit sandpaper to remove any sheen ... then vacuum and clean thoroughly. You really don't want to leave this step out, especially in a kitchen where there is grease and routine heavier cleaning.

    • @officiallybrittanynicole
      @officiallybrittanynicole  Рік тому +1

      They have held up great for almost 3 years now. So it doesn't appear to be REQUIRED in my case. I did mention that mine are faux wood look vinyl so there is a texture for the paint to grip to and the vinyl is matte. I've suggested sanding to everyone that has commented with additional questions though.

    • @officiallybrittanynicole

      If I remember to do an update at the right time of day, I will! The camera won't focus well that close with bright light coming in through the windows. It might be easier on a cloudy day.
      The paint looks exactly the same as it did 2 years ago! The texture on my windows will likely be different because my vinyl had a faux wood texture, so it looks like black wood grain. If you have regular smooth vinyl windows then it will look different.

      Good luck!! The only thing that I would have done differently is tape off a lot more space. I didn't notice it until I was cleaning later but there was a very very fine mist of paint that got to places outside of where I had covered. It wasn't even noticable until I wiped it down and saw it on my cloth and it didn't damage or stain anything, but just keep that in mind. Spray paint goes further than you'd think!

    I would not paint windows if it's under 60F outside. While you may feel warm inside, the cold from the outside will transfer to the window, especially if really cold out and you said it was 3F out, so that window had to be a lot colder than you think. I suggest using a lazer thermometer. If under 60F, wait until they are warmer. 65-70F being most ideal. And aside from a wipe down, did you do any sanding prep or primer? How has the paint held up over time?

    • @officiallybrittanynicole
      @officiallybrittanynicole  5 місяців тому +1

      The window glass was cold, but the vinyl was not. I didn't have any issues with it being too cold. It's been about 3 years and it still looks like it was just done. The windows have been opened and closed a lot - no signs of wear, no scratches, no peeling.
      I never did go back and paint the inside (because I honestly just didn't care enough to spend more time on it). I can't speak to how well that would hold up.
      I didn't sand them because my vinyl is a faux wood-look vinyl and already had a texture to it. If I was painting on smooth vinyl, I probably would have lightly sanded it first.

      Hey Jordan! They've held up really well and I don't regret doing it at all. I will say though, my windows are older and I've heard that if you do it on new windows it can void the warranty. So I would look into that before you do anything. It is a big job (I only did 2 windows). If you are thinking of doing it to an entire house, I might consider outsourcing it.

    • @officiallybrittanynicole
      @officiallybrittanynicole  Рік тому

      No, you would need to use a UV safe paint on the outside because the sun hits the outside of the windows. The sun could heat up the black paint and warp the vinyl. I would honestly probably not DIY the outside myself for that reason.

      I only wanted to paint the really thin part that had the wood design, not the entire inside that is white. That would have been too tedious to tape off to spray. I think doing that by hand makes the most sense with it being such a tiny strip. I did not get to it last spring (honestly totally forgot about it because it's such a tiny spot). I'll be doing it this spring, and might film a follow-up video for everyone as well!

      I didn't, and I wouldn't recommend doing that with paint like this. The sun hits the outside of your windows and black paint could attract too much heat and warp the vinyl. Professionals use UV safe paint for the outside, so I would either hire someone to do that or really research the right paint to use.

    Hot tip: CONTACT PAPER is a lot easier to use to mask windows off.

    Those windows come out, very easily. You should have just taken the double-hung windows out, painted them outside, and then brought them back in.

    Can I do this on the exterior too?

    • @officiallybrittanynicole
      @officiallybrittanynicole  2 роки тому

      You would need UV safe paint to do it on the outside so that the heat from the sun doesn't warp the windows. Personally, I would hire a professional to do the outside to be safe.

      @@officiallybrittanynicole I'll do this on the exterior, I'll be your guinea pig, the windows in a perpetually shaded area I think it will be fine, also I checked and the spray is uv resistant and rated for exteriors

      Yes! Still looks like they were just done. But for reference, I live in Michigan and there are only about 4 months out of the year that I open and close those windows. Could be different if they were being used daily.

      @@malcolmmoffat2108 That sentence makes literally no sense. They have never stuck, chipped, bubbled, or anything. If the windows had been under warranty I wouldn't have done this because it can void a warranty, but that wasn't an issue here. I have no idea what you mean by rebates. But if you can't leave a helpful comment then go do something better with your time. Life is too short for your negativity.
