  • In this video I take you through each step of making a handmade wooden fishing lure from start to finish. Once I sketch out a design, we carve it out of a solid piece of poplar. Then we move into foiling and finishing before this lure meets it's surprising end!

    I really enjoy your instructional videos mate. A tip from an amateur (me :) ) after I have drawn the profile and eye/gill pattern I place a piece of transfer paper (like the old carbon paper but heaps less messy) face up underneath and then trace back over the profile so you have the opposite side duplicated. Then I drawn lines above the nose/below the nose & above the tail/below the tail. I then draw a bottom profile below and a top profile above.

      First, thank you for watcing! Great tip with the transfer paper. I also think you are smart to put the pattern on both sides to make sure you stay symmetrical. Cheers!

    • @zimmtex

      I guess we all do foolish things from time to time. That's why I made two, so that I would have another. Ironically, I lost it on my first cast.

    I like your videos about how you make your lures,but how do you make your lead weight.
    Do you drill i wood and make them.
    Can you make a short video about it.

    Love your videos! I mostly carve actual fish and duck decoys from Jersey white cedar (traditional with ducks and I live in South Jersey where it's harvested) but am dabbling in lures now. Anyway do you what size that v-parting tool (v-gouge) is? You use it often for detailing lines you carve. Thanks for posting great, useful content!

    • @zimmtex
      @zimmtex  2 роки тому +1

      Great to hear from you; I love decoys but haven't ever made any. I'm not sure what size the gorgeous is, it came in a small carving set I bought years ago. It's maybe 1/8" on each side of the 'V' . Thanks for watching!

    I dont quite understand the reason for the final part... Did someone thought thaT THE LURE WOULD SURVIVE?

  • @DanEvan

    Have you tested how much those twisted wire screw eyes can hold compared to a thru wire harness? Just curious.

    • @zimmtex
      @zimmtex  2 роки тому

      I haven't done a direct head to head comparison but the thru wire would win by a wide margin. However, I do have a video testing screw eye strength at various depths which you might find interesting. I have another video testing thru wire strength on a GT popper, but its not an apples to apples comparison. I'll put it on my idea list! Thanks for watching!

      @@zimmtex I make a 230mm, 135g GT popper with a 40mm cup and a 255mm, 170g model with a 50mm cup. Both are made from incredibly high impact resin pours. I use 2.4mm 316 marine grade stainless wire for the harness which is a closed loop harness with crimped and barrel wrapped tagged ends. I also use 316 stainless steel decking grommets on the nose and stain to prevent shearing.

    • @zimmtex

      Well, the purpose was actually just to try something new with the channel. It worked out for the better because that's when I started making two baits at a time instead of just the one.

      Hi,
      I used to make fishing rod before I could no longer to so. I loved what I did. My rods were strong and frankly beautiful. They fished well and those that had and used them liked them very much. During that time I NEVER INTENTIONALLY BROKE ANY TO CHECK THEIR FISHABILITY. Surprisingly I and others just FISHED THEM LOL.
