sure yeah, I enjoy watching relatable skills. For me its valuable to see details in the learning that you just cant easily understand as a beginner when watching a pro
First time I got it, it just clicked, and I was immediately hooked! It's such a head game. Shoutout to the two random older skaters who spent their time teaching me and my friends how to do it correctly. I started on a huge mini. It was basically a real halfpipe, but without the vert. The first time I tried it with no instruction, I bodied HARD in front of a crowd. So glad those guys saw me and spent time teaching us how it's done. I might've never kept skating transition otherwise. There was no UA-cam or Braille back then! If you didn't have someone to teach you, it was rough. Took me years and THOUSANDS of attempts just to learn to ollie and kickflip as a kid before I'd ever been to a park.
Derek has inspired me to try and drop in. Im 56 yrs old and started skating again a few weeks ago. Haven't been on a board in over 30 yrs! Your videos help a lot! Thx
As much as I love watching Aaron and the team shred, watching Derek drop in gave me all the feels. Congrats Derek, keep inspiring us skateboarders who are learning and overcoming our fears.
I really needed this I started skateboarding again 3 weeks ago after 30 years I’m 45 now. My son started lessons. So I said I’ll skate with you. 2 weeks ago I bust my nose trying to drop in. So haven’t tried again. Hopefully after this it will work for a old man
@@brailleskateboarding Yo!!! Teach him how to pump on mini ramp or even Bird ramp, best lesson to get the feel of dropping in. Than also ollies, then manuals, he needs to get the feel of balance, that's all.
Exact same story for me man with my 11yr old but without the attempt to drop in yet. Twisted my ankle baaad in the first month but still been at it for about 6 months. Learning to bail properly at 45 yrs old and 100kg has been enlightening... And painful 😆
I feel Derek so much, my few drop in attempts must've looked just as dangerous. It's just so crazy how quickly this goes from safe to bodied, when you allow for a slither of doubt, making you instinctively pull your weight back.
Just wanna say, I watched this earlier today and it's EXACTLY how I felt all my teen years skating. I've still never skated vert and this video made me make a trip to get my board and practice dropping in the afternoon. Dropping the shoulder was the tip I've waited 20years to hear and work!!!
I really appreciate this kind of content from you guys, I just started learning at 29 for the first time and just getting out and learning to push has me needing this kind of motivation
Love it! The first time I ever dropped in, it was on a pretty tall and steep mini, maybe even a full halfpipe but without the vert. I wasn't as scared as I SHOULD have been! I bodied so hard in front of a crowd. Shoutout to the two older skaters at the park who noticed and spent their time, on multiple days, teaching me and my friends to drop in correctly. Not to mention more than a few other tricks and tips. Without them, I might've never attempted it again or gone on to start skating transition.
OMG a Derrick vid! This is the first since I've been watching Braille where he's the focus! Love you guys still bringing the fun; despite all of the team changes. Never stop doing what you guys do!
Thank you for this video...I am 50 next year and have decided to learn via your videos. More of this stuff please xx us beginners need to see this kinda stuff.
Name a more wholesome skateboarding video. Amazing. being so bad with uneven surfaces, i gave up on skating long ago, so this really hits to see him overcome the fear from all the different ramps up; really inspiring me to get my board out
Derek you did so amazing bro! Keep it up, and keep filming it because so many are the same level as you and to chronicle it together helps them grow and learn faster! Job well done. Progress Persist
Congratulations! That was so wonderful to watch, and hella inspiring! Yesterday I stepped on a board for the first time in almost 25 years thanks to VIDEOS LIKE THIS!
I’ve been trying to overcome the fear of turning into a back disaster over the coping, and this video reminds me of how similar all of these fears are. But of course nothing is as scary as your first drop in. Eventually you realize that you just have to take your chances with the first throw. And then boom, your body knows what’s going on and it just starts to work.
Derek going through wvery basic trick would actually be a really really natural way to show off common issues and correct them and would also help comfort level and people learning the tricks feel less foolish for not getting it right away. Sounded like a random idea thrown out there but could really actually be really beneficial and something I've never seen anyone else do. A tutorial where someone's actually learning along side you. Dope.
I'm in Derek's situation atm and I'm really impressed he did so well. Ironically I successfully dropped in on a steep ramp the very first time I tried it using the shoulder technique but the second time I hurt myself so now I can only do very shallow ramps until I get over my psychological barrier. Well done Derek.
Way to go! Last Sunday I also conquered my fear and learned Blunt to Rock on a mini Ramp never thought I was ever going to learn "blunt trick" but it happed :D
I just recently learned this and it was the most satisfying thing to roll off of the ramp, took the Braille advice, just didn’t think about it, step on it and go! Thank you for all your help Braille Ps. I am obsessed with my Midnight maker skateboard!
14:01 I'm impressed by the fact he just put his foot on the board and not moving into a wheelly I tried learning drop ins today and I kept doing wheellys
Overcoming fear is not easy, but hesitation is the worst thing. I learned the hard way when I hesitated doing a 360 on snowboard on an icy surface... I slammed badly, got a concussion (wasn't wearing a helmet then, bad move). The sooner you get it "over with" (the sooner you do the thing that scares you), the better. What's the worst that can happen? You slam? Put on some gear and do it. You bail? Do it again, right away. The old addage "getting back on the horse" exists for a reason, because if you don't it'll be worse. YOU CAN DO IT! BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! Aaron said it, it's all in the mind. There is no spoon.
Yes, I would 100% watch every video of you showing dude some tricks and teaching them how to do them. I'm just a old dude returning to skating that can use that some help also.
Yo guys I completely remember what it felt like the first time I dropped in. It definitely is something big to concur for some people. But Aaron is right, there’s no bailing in a drop in it’s all commitment and in your head.
I broke my spine when I was 12 and I tried dropping in on a minipipe the first time - I didn't lean forward nearly enough, my board went forward, I went back and landed full in the small of my back on the pipe, I was terrified of trying it in the first place but gave it a go, but I didn't have any of my mates who skated at the time to show me how to do this so I absolutely 100% understand Derek. The rest of you are proper bros for getting him through this though, it's properly intimidating, even just trying to do it on a flat ramp!
one of our regulars at the skatepark I work at, a little kid was too afraid to drop into the half pipe, but she really wanted to learn how to, she just couldn't commit. So I just went "If you make it, I'll learn how to skateboard." well, she immediately, before I would even finish that sentence, drops in perfectly, no fear whatsoever. and keeping to my word, I'm learning to skateboard again. Something I haven't done since high school when my dad accidentally sold my board.
The fear of falling is huge for some people. I'm some people. 😂 I tried dropping in on a mini ramp with absolutely no knowledge of what I was doing. It didn't go well. I basically fell backwards because I didn't know how to and how much to lean forward. I think learning how to bail, fall, and actually drop in would have helped. Love these videos, and Derek should be proud!
It is so nice to have a team of friends to push you and encourage you as opposed to trying to over come fear by yourself. I still cannot go down a ramp.
How I learned. And this is the best way I learned . Drop in on a regular ramp. Get comfortable with it. Try steeper ramps. Then try a small quarter pipe. Keep doing it and until you’re comfortable. Bam. You did it. Just a suggestion.
Can't wait for the day I see a title about overcoming fear and it's Mr Horatio Cruz dropping in on the vert 👀 Tetrimino + Gobstopper shoes + Caster wheels
Teach the drop in like Carlos did. Point at the ground in front of you with your front hand and hold your back hand up over your head then when you drop in it makes you drop your front shoulder. I've taught so many people how to drop in using that technique all thanks to Carlos.
Awesome encouragement and instruction! So cool to watch a skater work through the psychological aspects. Much appreciated, I’m inspired to do more.🛹🔥🛹🔥🛹!
I remember my first drop in, It was a 7 ft. spin ramp, I kept trying 50-50 thinking it was less scary, I was wrong. When I finally did it regular, everyone was cheering my on. I was 16 or 17 at the time, back in 1991, that indoor skatepark is long gone. My friend tried dropping in on the wooden bowl, and slammed hard.
man I still remember learning dropping in years ago and it is scary. pretty much the only advice I had was slam your foot down. I also got bodied a bunch of times in a mini, even after I already dropped in a lot, sometimes I would still just mess up and slam. so you will always get bodied sometimes in skating, you just have to get through it and try not to mess up and try to fall as gracefully as you can haha. but this was great to watch, gotta love watching someone improve and getting over fear. a lot of the fear is just never doing it before I guess, so it's like fear of the unknown, you just don't know until you have more experience.
I learned to drop in on a bowl with rocks in it and it’s no wonder I smacked my face on the other side. Now that I had scrapes and blood pouring out of my nose I gave it another try removing rocks and dirt first before sending it. I dropped in and carved the bowl side a little and ever since then could drop in. My story isn’t to scare you, but is an example of how much more difficult it can be given the type of drop in and no one to cheer you on. YOU CAN DO IT! Just start small and eventually you will find it easy to progress.
Maybe it was off-camera, but I feel like no one specifically addressed what he was doing with his arms - flailing out for balance - rather than driving those down with his shoulders
Loved this , if it wasn't dark out , I'd be off to drop in right this minute... You guys must be so much fun to learn with !! Wish you were just round the corner !! 💯 ❤ and respect 🙏
Thanks for this video! I learnt a lot, both what to do and both what not to do - as a teacher also. I respond here as for your request; I've been teaching swimming and Kung Fu for many years, and the issue of overcoming fear myself and helping overcoming fear for a student - isn't something new for me. In my experience, very small steps, which include very little fear from the one hand, and therefore much more concentrated and relaxed mind from the other hand - in addition to many many many repetitions in each step result in both fun (and less "madness" which suits less people in the world) and more successful way - thanks to building patiently muscle memory. Cheering loudly many times might help the already very afraid person to make the scary step - but might also very distract him... which is the opposite of what we, teachers and supporting friends would like for them... As for me, I'm a 42 years old surfer who is trying to go down like you do on skateboard 😱 So i try to do it the most gradually i can - and most fun - with the least fear and danger in order to learn to control, as much as possible, each scenario in the safest way. In the end we gonna fall - it's inevitable - but if done correctly - more chances of staying healthy in one piece which also enables to continue training, rather than needing the time to heal. Another thing i notices is a difference between how you dropping in - versus what you taught to do: you place your front feet steadily on the board and only then lean forward (which i definately going to try!) Instead how you were teaching which is to both lean forward and only then place your front feet on the board and "kick" while you're already in the air dropping which seems much more crazier!! I hope what i wrote might be helpful - and thanks again for the video!!! 👏👏👏👏👏
10:10 I just learned how to drop in myself, it's 100 mental. I also was like what that is so easy was that really what I was afraid of? The feeling is a very similar feeling to riding ramps, like what Aaron said when he saw you kick turn, he knew YOU GOT THIS. Keep doing it all the time, always, like he said make sure you are comfortable enough to where you don't even have to think about it or foot placement and muscle memory will do all the work. Congrats Derek!
