Still my favorite episode. Incredible story and acting dealing with a sensitive subject for 1985. The music throughout was perfection. Ending with Peter Gabriel's Biko was brilliant.
Fun Fact: After his guest spot on Miami Vice, actor William Russ (Evan Freed) became a regular cast member on producer Michael Mann's tv series Crime Story (which was inspired by real-life police and FBI cases). This series featured a number of actors who had previously worked with Mann on Miami Vice.
He really should of! Incredible performance! And that distinctive hairstyle of his was seriously slick and awesome. In fact...honestly, the baddest and coolest hairstyle of everyone on the five seasons of Vice. Both in terms of main/recurring characters to one-time characters. That swoopy hair with that white blazer! Right on👍👍👍👍👍 Evan was one compelling dude, despite how unhinged and disturbed he was. William Russ was an excellent selection for the role.
My favourit episode. Not just a boring crime story. This episode has so many levels, is scilfully filmed and brilliantly accompanied with Peter Gabriel music. Have it on tape, would love to have it on DVD.
After 33 years this still has Punch when Evan freed played by William Russ is working under cover for a guy that could terrorise innocent People and Evan was Brilliant .The Peter Gabriel Score , The Rythmn of the heat completed this Action Packed scene ,Glad I have Miami vice on DVD ❤️
To me, the best episode of Miami Vice (and Out Where the Buses Don’t Run is my 2nd favorite). This was a great episode. It dealt w/guilt, regret, absolution, and homophobia. The homophobia was dealt with with dignity and compassion. The issue of someone coming out and how others react(ed) was ahead of its time; especially when AIDS was starting to run rampant through the gay community. In the 80’s the gay community was demonized and vilified. This episode tried to paint the picture that you were just as human being gay, as well as being straight. Gabriel’s “Rhythm of The Heat” was (to me) a good foreshadowing of Evan’s soul, especially the line in the song “The rhythm has my soul.”. And “Biko” was a perfect ending, when Evan commits suicide by walking into the bullet fire, as his way of atonement and release from his past.
Aside from the spoiler(!), you're spot on. And this lesson is lost, because the streaming services ban this episode. Begs the question, Which is worse? That Crockett uses a "politically incorrect" word in the context of this lesson? Or that banning this episode means the lesson goes unlearned? (Also, I'd put "Out Where the Buses..." at #1 and "Evan" #2. Both definitely the best episodes.)
@@motoman2WH3 I’ve heard this episode is banned from streaming services (but not the dvd) because of Gabriel and copyright infringement. And either way, whether “Evan” is 1 or 2, they are the strongest, most cohesive episodes. And, ending “Out Where the Buses Don’t Run” with “Brothers in Arms” (I still think to this day, that that track is the best on that album. Aside: I think Mark Knopfler is one the most underrated guitarists and one of the best story tellers, “Making Movies” attests to that) was perfect.
Assumption is the mother Of all fuck-ups -there is something special about the copyright on the music for this episode that keeps it off of streaming services.
@@fever_spike Yeah, Netflix banned this one too. And on cable, "faggot" was bleeped. This is insane, because this episode was one of the very first mainstream shows to deal with homophobia: Crockett only said "faggot" when explaining to Tubbs how wrong he & the department were back in the day. The lesson was powerful, and is completely lost when this sort of P.C. nonsense fails to take into consideration the context.
Until I watched Miami Vice recently, I had not idea that William Russ (actor who plays Evan) was the same guy who played the dad in "Boy Meets World". I must say he plays a crazy guy quite well in this episode. Vice producer Michael Mann apparently liked his acting, since William Russ went on to appear in Mann's other NBC show "Crime Story" one year later.
I can only say....Professional. Music number one Acting number 🔝 Dialogue nothing else until 2022 Style only unique Why did you have to destroy this masterpiece?
Glad to hear that! And when i was 13 i had a white sport coat, white casual slacks, a teal under shirt, and braided leather shoes. This was by far my favorite show on TV.
This is one of my favorite episodes of Miami Wice and I was a teenager when I saw this scene. I said, "Forget the UZI Ah-nold used in Terminator. The Mac-Ten is the sh!t!". If you ever watched The X-Files, The Fiji Mermaid is the equivalent of this Miami Wice episode of your favorites. ua-cam.com/video/2oMGErAHZsI/v-deo.html
1977/1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. For years, I thought is was a similar era Chevy Camaro....then I looked closer (front lights, tail lights) upon seeing your question....yep, a Pontiac. And not a Bandit one: no Firebird on the hood, or Trans Am wording on the back and sides.
Just watched this episode trippin face and it put me on a recursive loop where I felt like all reality was just happening in my head. Lasted like 5 mins but it felt like I had done went n fucked up n the shit was permanent 😫😂 gonna have to go back n rewatch it cause this opening scene is bout all I really caught.. My takeaway from it was “wait, so Crockett’s gay?”. Needless to say I missed a lot of the plot 😂
No, Evan was secretly gay. He hid this because he was ashamed. He was very close to Crockett. Probably looked up to him. Evan lived with his “demons” till the end. He felt horrible for his behavior toward the fellow cop.
@@txmetalhead82xkobviously I figured out what was goin on gay the the fact 😂 but I didn’t catch the possibility of Evan also bein gay but it makes a lot of the scenes with him make more sense
Yeah all those cops for two bad guys with guns? The 'bullet proof' limo gets 3 seconds to accelerate to 60mph and exit the building? Totally believable.
I dunno why so many say that Evan is the best MV episode? It is nothing that special and the ending is probably one of silliest and half-assed of all with Gina, Trudy, Swi and Zito snipping away the weapons and what does Peter Gabriel's Biko has to do with anything? A kooky music choice.
I'm going to assume you did not see this in its initial network run. Back then, homophobia (and homosexuality in general) was a taboo subject on prime time TV, AIDS was just entering the public consciousness, and heroes (Crockett in this case) were not supposed to be on the "wrong" side of history. Most such shows that did air were preachy and P.C. This one, anything but. In the story, it almost cost Crockett & Tubbs their partnership, and did cost a former colleague's life.
For me personally, the two factors that elevate this above other MV episodes are the intro and the story. I think the intro speaks for itself; the tensions builds splendidly, the shots of Crockett and Tubbs on the roof + of the mannequins are awesome, and the way the action goes down is sweet too. As for the story, it's got solid crime plot mixed with real emotional stakes for both Crockett and Tubbs. The sensitive handling of homosexuality for a show at the time is also cool, but ultimately the cherry on top.
The openings to Miami Vice were on a different level.. They ratcheted up the tension from minute one and you knew you were in for an amazing episode.
Indeed they did, plus the music and the cinematography are just some of the reasons why Miami Vice is one of my favorite tv series of all time.
The best. Nothing and I mean nothing is like that on TV today.
Thank you Lord for allowing me to see this during its initial run.
Amen, brother. I saw it on its first run, too.
Same here. I always thought ‘Rhythm of the Heat’ and ‘Biko’ fit the narrative perfectly.
Amen to that! ❤
😂😄👍🫶
Great opening scene and the ending was even better. My favorite episode.
Still my favorite episode. Incredible story and acting dealing with a sensitive subject for 1985. The music throughout was perfection. Ending with Peter Gabriel's Biko was brilliant.
Jan Hammer's varied iterations of Evan's theme/motif through out, and the iconic "The Talk" just made this even more rich.

Not so regular actually. His character was murdered in the pilot episode.
Actually he was more regular on Wiseguy he was in 14 episodes.
Mr RUSS stared along with Don Johnson in the TV remake of The Long Hot Summer.
Seriously, the choice of song for every scene is just so great. It's one of the greatest strengths of Vice!
The guy who played Evan should have got an Emmy for this episode.
Incredible actor

Great acting by both DJ and William Russ. Both deserved an Emmy big time.
“Evan”....one of the absolute best on MV......

Evan ended up in a relationship with his boss. He deeply cared for Orgel, even though, he didnt want to admit it.
Back when TV was made for adults.
Peter Gabriel: The rhythm of the heat (Security or Peter Gabriel IV). IMHO, Miami Vice was the best serie using soundtrack of the 80's.
Awesome song and perfect usage!
Song goes perfect with this scene. I'm 1984 this is fire!!!!!! Very layered. I was stuck on calderons return. This is the best episode.
YUP
I still know every word to the opening 40 years later…as we shall soon see, bigger is not necessarily better
My absolute #1 favorite episode of Vice!
This show raised the bar on crime drama the power will never be matched great acting script writing and nusic.
The ending was one of the best
Best episode on season 1.
Even is hands down the greatest television character of all time
The good old William Russ. Best knowing in "Wiseguy". Roger Lococco! Very underrated actor.
Was in Deadwood too getting his teeth knocked out by camp pugilist
Uno de los mejores episodios de Miami Vice.
Man, this was the best time to be a music-loving teenager.
Of Michael Mann ever did a send MV movie, this would have been a great storyline to use.
Peter Gabriel ! Great song , and album !
For white people.
"Mogles z nami z jednej wazy..."
The one episode they never have on UA-cam or demand...

Utterly outrageous that this episode is still banned almost 40 years after it aired… perhaps the most poignant episode of the series.

Evan and Out where the Buses don't run are my 2 favorite episodes
William Russ, the father from Boy Meets World

That 1st Season of Miami Vice was the Tone for a 5 year Run.

Good. GOOOOOD!!!! You have much to learn. Keep watching Vice.
so at 22, what do you think?
Were you also a drug dealer? Or just a vice cop?
Brilliant use of Peter Gabriel music in this episode
Would love to see this episode again. Bought every season of MV but Prime didn't include the Evan episode! Why?
This was back when you could buy open bolt MACs at any gun show.
I love it when the car explodes 😂
I have to watch the opening credits right after this.
Feels incomplete without Jan Hammer's banging theme music right after it. 😎
He teamed up with Hector from Scarface 😆.
He should've said: "Now the Leg, huh?"
Hector left his beloved chainsaw ( which he named after his deceased mother ) at home , it didnt handle fiberglass too well ...
Hector! Ok
The complete lunacy of Zitto & Sytec (sp unk) taking down those guys. Absolutely nothing about this series was realistic, but it was fun to watch.
The Gabriel music made this episode, but it's also the reason why this episode has been kept off TV.
Biko song into V miniseries Main Theme by Barry De Vorzon
And I thought I was the only one who noticed that…Miami Vice was actually the show that replaced V: The Series when it got canceled.
The dad from Boy Meets World (Alan Matthews) before he settled down apparently was in the Miami underworld 😂
why is the roof so high in that building was it for blimps?
Former US Navy WW2 blimp hanger at Opa Locka Airport. No longer there.
How cool 80s Cadillac touch cars and they explod
They learned from Ford.

The Rhythm Of The Heat by Peter Gabriel.
