    Thought this film was more about 80s 90s nostalgia, than the Caravan. Having said that. I still loved and appreciated it! Wishing you a blessed new year!

    Another great offering, brings back memories of Iacocca's TV commercials, he was such a great salesman. No nitpicking, loved the video, but would have liked to see more about the van than the movie stuff. Thanks again Tofer, nailed it again!

    Awesome video I grew Up in the 1990’s these vans, K-cars an station wagons where everywhere man I miss hearing a 2.8 or 3.1 GM V-6 go up the hill by my house I remember one day in the summer of 1996 I counted 5 Chevy celebrity’s, 6 Oldsmobile cutlass cieras, 3 K-cars an a few 1980’s ford Ltd wagons

    I have laid my own hands on that very first Plymouth Voyager that Lee Iacocca used as the press minivan. Crazy long story, but it was amazing to touch a piece of history like that.

    Lee Iacocca came up with the idea of the minivan while working at Ford Motor Company. After he was fired from Ford, he took his minivan plans to Chrysler

    Another excellent post. As always, the 80s references thrown in are as big a part of the whole as the content itself. I especially loved the linking Wrath of Khan to Chrysler. Ah, good times! Thanks, Tofer!!

    The Chrysler new yorker turbo was the ultimate K car. And the VW type 2 was the first minivan. These were revolutionary however.

    Nostalgia for cars is a weird thing. We look back with rose tinted glasses on some cars that were not actually very good (in the U.K. the Mk2 Escort springs to mind) whilst forgetting or damning cars that were actually groundbreaking or revolutionary, based on a supposed effect they had in either direction. I suppose it comes down to what we imagine a car will do for us, a rear wheel drive saloon that’s had its halo versions succeed on the track or the rally stage will make us long for that even when all we got to ride in was the small engined base version, while a family car that was only ever that doesn’t remind us of our dreams when we’re young, even though it’s more closely tied to our experience and our memories. All had character, but we forget that sometimes.

    I can still remember seeing loads of Caravans and Voyagers when I was a kid in the 80s and 90s. The school parking lot had lots of them. Parking lots at major retailers, shopping plazas, and malls would be loaded with them.

    Lee is smiling down from heaven. Too bad he didn't quite live long enough to see your work...you done him proud. Still the most efficient way conceived to transport a large family. Other than the off-road or towing capability, I still don't get the SUV thing for 90% of people who have them. So much is left on the table for those who need the room. I'm amazed how we live in an age where looks & perception matter so much to the average humanoid but practicality is largely ignored.
    All the 80s movie references are gold! You got me digging thru my collection now. I think it's a good TMP & WOK night 😁 best wishes for the coming new year, live long & prosper.

    I just discovered your channel this evening. I watched the K-Car - Taurus - and this video. Well done if not a little over the top on this one, I know you were trying for nostalgic reverie, but it was at the cost of automotive content.

    Great production and knowledge. And from an adult narration! Not some vulgar flippant young cat. The MiniVan was one of a number of new phenomenons carwise in the '80's, a decade of opportunity. The Cherokee and Taurus for example. The VW bus came early. But the KVan popularized the small passenger van. Ford II gave Iacocca the minivan plans thinking it had no future. I always thought minivans a bit cramped. Thus SUVs winning eventually. Problem with the minivan it's a one box with little style potential. Two for the SUV, still one box short. But I predict they will grow trunks, back decks soon.

    Had first an SUV that carriied a lot of 4x4 mechanicals not needed for daily driving. Then got a minivan and it really changed my mind. Don't care about image and really appreciate the universal utility of minivan. When you get old you will have to downsize from high step SUV and need space for scooter and walking appliances. Nobody steals minivans which is OK by me.

  • @pancudowny
    @pancudowny 3 роки тому

    Slight nit-pick: The Chrysler minivans never got the Turbo 2.2L... they got the 2.5L [stroker] version, and very few of them got it at-that. Most of the 1st-gens were either the non-turbo 2.5L four, the 3.3L/3.8L V-6 or--depending on model-year--one of the two the garbage engines Mitsibishi built.
