- So Much is the seventh track to be taken from the album i/o. This is the Bright-Side Mix, by Mark 'Spike' Stent.

Written and produced by Peter Gabriel, So Much is ‘a simple song’, that features a string arrangement from John Metcalfe and contributions from Tony Levin on bass, David Rhodes on guitar and backing vocals from Peter’s daughter Melanie Gabriel. The song was recorded at Real World Studios, Bath, The Beehive and British Grove, London.
‘I was trying purposefully not to be clever with this. I wanted to get a very simple chorus but one which still had some substance to the harmony and melody. Something that was easy to digest but still had a bit of character to it.
So Much is about mortality, getting old, all the bright, cheerful subjects, but I think when you get to my sort of age, you either run away from mortality or you jump into it and try and live life to the full and that always seems to make a lot more sense to me. The countries that seem most alive are those that have death as part of their culture.’
As Peter goes on to explain, there’s a duality to the meaning of So Much, which is just as much about revelling in all the experiences and joyous distractions still to be had right now as it is about contemplating the future; ‘The reason I chose So Much as a title is because I’m addicted to new ideas and all sorts of projects. I get excited by things and want to jump around and do different things. I love being in a mess of so much! And yet it also means there's just so much time, or whatever it is, available. Balancing them both is what the song is about.’
This month’s full moon release comes with artwork from the artist Henry Hudson and his work ‘Somewhere Over Mercia'.
‘I started looking at Henry's work and thought it was great. He's done some dense and intricate work with plasticine, but then he also has this other more expressionist, horizon work with different colours and they're very simple and pure. I connected quite strongly with him.
The works where Henry's got horizons are minimalist in a way. They are quite layered and there's a physicality or three-dimensional element to the way he puts the work together. The idea of cutting the horizon in a different colour, in this case he wanted it to be yellow, and then effectively letting it bleed onto the painting I thought was beautiful and powerful. In the one sense, the horizon is the infinite but it's also the limit. It had some good symbolism. I think it's a great piece of work.’
‘There’s a universalness about the song,’ says Hudson. ‘I think the relationship between that song and my horizon lines are quite poignant - dealing with our understanding of what time is, dealing with voids or horizons or places that can appear to be closer or further away.’
Just like the previous full moon releases, So Much comes with differing mix approaches from Mark ‘Spike’ Stent (Bright-Side Mix) here, as well as Tchad Blake (Dark-Side Mix) and also from and Hans-Martin Buff’s Atmos mix (In-Side Mix). ‘One of the privileges of working with these extraordinary mixers is that they bring personality, sound textures, pictures, environments out of the elements that you throw at them that have strong individual characters. You can really hear what these very smart people are doing.’

I don't know how likely it is that the comments here ever make it to Peter's personal awareness but listening to this song does make me hope that he truly and authentically knows how much he has meant to so many people and that he appreciates the scope of all that he *has* accomplished in so many areas. Artistically and otherwise, he has spent most of his life being one of the most valuable individual human beings we could have, and billions of people have had the gift of being on this planet at the same time as him. I've witnessed people who are still just discovering his music, both solo and with Genesis, and having their lives changed in vastly positive ways. Peter's impact will long outlive him and I hope he can feel that, despite whatever else theoretically could also have been done, once his contributions to the world come to an end his accomplishments were light years beyond amazing and impactful.
In the past month, I've discovered old Genesis when I happened upon Watcher of the Skies here on UA-cam. I was aware he was in Genesis, but it was kinda "old music" for an 80s kid to get into back then. Little did I know how beautiful, powerful, unique, and thought provoking his music was. I realize other members of Genesis helped write a lot of the music, but you can see how he poured his soul into singing and performing. It was quite a spectacle to see. I mean, who wears a fox head costume on stage while belting out your soul? That's right, Mr. Gabriel would. I've thought about how I should experience his music, and it's "Be prepared for beauty and calm, but be ready to spring to your toes and leap in those moments when he summons a powerful note, chord, or lyric." I've almost experienced a pharmaceutical-like high from his performing. One of my favorites is Dancing with the Moonlit Knight. This new album sounds so good too.
@@TafferBoyElvis You ought to check out the solo works of all the other Genesis members. I need not mention how big Collins is, and then you have the also pop-y Mike n the Mechanics, the still elusive Banks, and prog rock torch bearer Hackett! That's 60 albums right there, not including Gabriel's body of work. Enjoy :)))

I thought the dark side mix was good - but WOW - this is so much more powerful where Peters vocals are concerned. This REALLY is a masterpiece of songwriting, musicianship & sound engineering. And all the while recorded less than 30 miles from where I’m sitting. Most EXCELLENT.

I appreciate how this mix really centers the vocals, but on this song I think I prefer the prominent piano of the Dark-Side. I like the open spaces that mix creates more than the fuller background of this one. No shade (ha) to anyone who likes this one better, though. I've really enjoyed seeing what different people find in each mix.
I prefer the dark side mix myself. There was too much of an 'echoey' feel to the background on this version and I liked the vocals and piano in the dark side version more
The dark mixes enhance the flesh and bones and feelings and they usually take me more, yet it's lovely to have the guitar and piano unison duet reveal itself in this version, and I find the echo quite interesting too, bringing mystery into the matter of fact testimony. Well done for the two versions, and I agree, that would be great to have the two sides in the album !

1977-1992 solo work was great, this latest is blah. Peter gabriel had a good run, yet now the music is lacking, it is still ok, yet nothing like the prior work when his Yang and Yin were dynamic. Time passes and talent and drive wane. The lyrics lack the hooks and then music goes not evoke emotions like the 1977-1992 work. All things end. There is a peak and then decline, yet many never get a peak even 2% of what Peter G got. I respect his older music and know that he has made great work in the past, this new work and his past few works have been as we call in life the decline. yet this is normal and he made some great early music as stated before. Like the Beatles song then and now, it is something to hear a few times and then not want to hear again.

I was lucky enough to see Peter perform twice in the Midwest and just today, this song has finally clicked for me. After this whole release of the album, and the sit down and listens, I can honestly say that Peter Gabriel's most current work will eventually be his finest! Since I saw him perform The Lamb with Genesis through to today, I am truly stunned at the wonderful songwriting he has just released. This song is one of many that are stellar and so pertinent ! Thank you for the countless hours of inspiration and bliss Peter has provided in my life.
