I like how this is actually somewhat understandable when you think about it. Mario is a well known figure, but his motivations for killing turtles are unclear since it's not strictly necessary to kill all the "enemies" to save Peach. Especially the turtles which are really just minding their own business. So it's not as straightforward as you might think. And presumably Kant's philosophy was a topic of the class, so he's applying that idea to Mario--his catchphrase "let's-a-go" reflects his worldview of carefree gumption, which is expressed when he kills turtles without thought. And the third paragraph is where it actually gets interesting. His point is that we think Mario is a hero for risking his life, but to Mario, life is really just money. And he's so rich that he's basically become immortal. So can we really call him a hero if he's so privileged? Food for thought. Perchance.

Koopa Troopas aren't as harmless as you're making them out to be though. They still damage Mario on contact after all. Also, Hammer Bros are Koopas and they actively attack Mario. Not to mention variants like Buzzy Beetle and Spike Tops... that are technically still Koopas. All these enemies are turtles.

And today we might consider it in the value placed upon our lives in cases of life insurance and worker's compensation. Employers don't have too care too much about safety if they don't have to pay too much when we get injured.

Holy shit THIS is where this is from?! So I'm a philosophy TA, I teach bioethics, logic and an introduction to philosophy course. And this year I've been getting a SHIT TON of essays with the word "perchance" with it. I couldn't figure out how 40 students were continuously using this word wrong. Eventually I asked the prof I teach under wtf was going on and he said he didn't know. I then pulled one of my better students aside (aiming for med school) and asked wtf was going on. She said it was an internet meme. I couldn't figure out where this from coming from until one of my students sent me an email linking this video. Man this is way funnier than I thought it would be. I too got trolled but thankfully none of my students took on topics like this and stuck to the "perchance" part of the meme. I feel like a boomer despite being 25. I will say, i wouldn't have failed this paper. And I'll give it to my students they really got me. I can't believe they collectively decided to do this.
Update: I have some of the same students again this year for a 300 level logic course. About 10 of them confirmed they all did shrooms together in their dorm room and decided this meme was the funniest thing ever and thought I was chill enough to let it slide. No one failed the class and I gave a makeup assignment to those who scored below a 60% average at the end of the course. Class average was 78% and they nominated me TA of the year last year. I'm really happy everything ended well and appreciate the students efforts in taking a course no one willingly takes.

Ironically I think that George Orwell would agree with the teacher here. There's an article he wrote in 1946 called "Politics and the English Language" that complains about how many political writers use vague and overly fancy words. He claimed that people used it to be purposefully vague about what they are saying and therefore make it easier to make their argument sound convincing. I may have totally misremembered the article but you can look it up yourself if you want.

Exactly. The point of an essay is to succinctly articulate information.
Strong taboos often have strong opinions behind them, thus the more they are used in an essay, the more legitimate and misinterpreted bias is possible.
Bias by itself doesn’t preclude the information from being trustworthy, but the more there is bias, the easier it is to believe them to be an untrustworthy narrator.

    • @evandien9947

@@ClassicBentobox I agree that the more it is used, the worse the end result. It will lose its status as taboo and meaning of something extreme if it is something regularly used. But not all essays are meant to articulate unbiased information, you could purposely write an entirely opinionated essay, and as long as you back up your reasoning sufficiently, there's really no problem with that.

It’s definitely on a spectrum from objective to subjective. If the writer discloses their bias, it stops it from seeming misleading. Above all, presenting the information accurately and believably is the biggest standard, whether it’s opinionated or not.

True story: a couple years back, I took a graduate course on animal domestication. The essay question on the final exam asked for a hypothetical scenario/history for a new domesticated species (real or imagined), with justification for selection based on observed trends on the behavior of animals that have already been domesticated (e.g. hierarchical social structures that can be exploited to tame them, etc.). Now, speculative evolution is my jam, so this wasn't a big deal for me. But I didn't go far down that already fruitful road before I had a eureka moment. Despite not caring about the Final Fantasy series past 12 (Tactics and 9 were the best, fight me over it), they provided a convenient template for a creature to domesticate: chocobos.
Prior to the Great American Interchange, South America was an island continent like Australia, leading to the survival of many animal lineages that went extinct elsewhere in the world. This is best exemplified by the Phorusrhachids, the only terror bird group to survive past the Eocene. So, South America already had a precedent for having large flightless predatory birds running around for ~60 million years. From there, it was a short logical leap to suggest a lineage of massive flightless parrots evolved for the Pampas of Northern South America, which later propagated west across the Andes, north across the Isthmus of Panama, and west across the Bering Land Bridge. This, in turn, led to multiple domestication events in different regions and the development of different breeds specialized for different habitats, up to and including the golden chocobo which had secondarily regained the ability to fly (extremely rare and considered sacred in many cultures).
Unfortunately, while I aced the exam, my pop culture reference went completely over my professor's head, and I had to explain the joke to him later. Still, easily one of the best times I've had on an exam question.
