11:38 that's not drag racing. That's a tractor-pull event, which is when a tractor (or truck) is hooked up to a specially built weighted sled and has to drag the sled as far as possible. But, as the sled gets dragged further and further, the weight shifts towards the front of the sled, causing it to dig into the dirt and become more and more difficult to drag. You can get some pretty crazy tractor set ups when you get into the unlimited classes, like multiple engines: ua-cam.com/video/OtiXf4cii30/v-deo.html
I've never understood these events. Sure, it's a battle of power and who can go the farthest the longest, but from the outside it seems like most engines are destroyed in the process.
@@bluspectre2042 it's really no different from other types of drag racing. It's about optimising the way the power is put down. And while you're right that those engines need a rebuild after basically every event, that really is no different from top fuel or funny car drag racing.
It's just more slow. But then again, I'd like to see a vehicle that hasn't been prepared to do so drag that sled for 100 metres in under 10 seconds.
Every manche the sled is made heavier and the goal is primarily get the most distance, though if more than one competitor gets a full pull the fastest wins. And yes catastrophic engine failure is part of the show.
they always blow up
Steering this Type of tractors is by using rear brakes separetly on left or right wheel. Throttle is in your right hand, brakes under foots 😉
Jankes Jankes got it. Anyone who's used a tractor or backhoe knows about the split brakes for tight turns.

6:40 I've worked on formula renault for a bit and I remember that the engine working backwards was a big problem whenever someone spun and forgot to kick the clutch in. The main concern during those incidents were the engine itself as the oil pump doesn't work backwards and the intake manifold exploding from the pressure. After those we needed to clean the intake as it was covered in oily soot as well. We never really figured out how it worked, but I can tell you that it worked, car going backwards in 1st gear and all.
thats crazy, I did not know this was possible!
@@CarMighty We even asked some Renault engineers and they don't know either, we think it might be a combination of cam profile and ignition timing that somehow makes it work. Every other powertrain engineer I've talked to doesn't believe it either.
@@CarMighty there is a tractor called the Lanz Bulldog, it idles at 0 rpm, its a fun vehicle. The engine RUNS, but it idles at 0 rpm while running. 1950's 2-stroke tech was amazing

I did a quick Google search of the writing on the aide of the "ABNORMAL"-sized truck, and Rotran, as it says, is a transportation company that is part of the Eskom group in South Africa. The devices being moved are transformers or something similar that will be used as part of South Africa's power grid. EDIT: Somebody else has a better answer as to what they are moving.
Can confirm I’m from South Africa and see these all the time 👍
I'm pretty sure those were generators, as you said, yes
Those trucks should be some Pacific P16's
As a South African , I can confirm that these sorts of trucks have ABNORMAL written on them.
Can confirm those are transformers dud to the weight of them if place on a conventional trail it will crush the trail and the road So the reason for that special trailer is to evenly put the weight on the road As well to make it easier to take turns in place were it is hard They weight around 180 tons metric so basically three Abrams tanks
There is a documentary that shows how they take it from Durban to one of the power plants in KZN(province)
The video looks like in the North Wes Province
If you were wondering I am South African
PS at CarMighty love the videos keep it up

5:15 It looks like they are transporting a transformer for a power station. those things are incredibly heavy so they need this kind of transport.
10:59 that lawnmower is really having the best time of his life
It's face tho 😂
10:12 The point of dually tires is for stability when hauling heavy loads. It also puts less weight on each tire so it won't damage the road. You don't see duallies on smaller trucks, like the ford f150 and the ram 1500 because they are not meant to pull a lot of weight.
My diesel teacher said "the only thing limiting how much you can pull is your tires"
@@brentbennett5401 and your teacher was wrong, because there's also weight over the tires and power.
@@robertdevito5001 weight which sits on the tires. if your tires can't handle the weight it doesn't matter how heavy it is
@@brentbennett5401 Suspension, frame, hitch, gearing, etc. There are plenty of things that limit how much you can tow.
@@brentbennett5401 OK, get the grippiest tires you can, and the most powerful motor you can, and put them in a 1960s Mini Cooper, then have a tug of war with an F150... see who wins.
Hell, watch tractor pulls where a steam tractor shows up, half the time they're on slick tires offroad and they'll do the best, they'll tow the sled to the end and they'll win the tug of war, that's because they weigh the most.
Look at trains, the locomotives all have steel wheels on steel tracks, how much each engine can pull is decided by weight and engine power, their pulling force is called tractive effort.
11:39 this is not quite a drag race it’s called a tractor pull where weight is slowly moved towards the rear axle and the goal is to go as far as possible.
5:32 dam that was a clean drift
Incredible, wasn’t it?
Rwd tractors have brakes only in the rear wheels. These brakes are independent of each other, i.e., one wheel can be locked up without other wheel locking. You have 2 brake pedals, which can be combined using a lock. That's how you can steer a tractor with it's front wheel in air.
but why was he using the steering wheel if theres two brake pedals?
@@JayDillaThaKilla Good question
@@danieljurk7820 thats what caught my attention, he is steering but the front wheels don't move, maybe the steering is linked to the brakes on this particular rig?
@@JayDillaThaKilla so the wheels were already turned for when they bonked the ground momentarily
@@JayDillaThaKilla probably is for more pressise steering. hard to steer when the tractor is bouncing around using 2 pedals AND the throttle/clutch
11:45 It may be perhaps that he is steering with brakes - On most tractors nowdays, you will have a brake for left and right wheels separated to steer, in case of a faliure in steering system. Perhaps he modified his steering to do that stuff with the rear wheels, or he is slightly pressing on the two pedals.
Right, i know it's an old tractor, but it probanbly has some modern safety stuff
There are a lot of old tractors with two brake pedals and they are use for steering when the front wheels leaves the ground and for helping make thither turns like 180° in the same spot
you can see him breakin seperatly from the break pedals when the traktors frontwheels are up in the air.
Your assumption is right. I drove an old german tractor some years ago which had a split brake pedal, from which two seperate wires led to the rear brakes
Doesn't all tractors have steering brakes? I don't know one that doesn't.

I'm loving the return of The Improv in the outros! Nice video. Keep going!
4:15 the SUV really gave the tractor a clean
The tractor doesn't have rear wheel steering, but participating in an event (tractor pulling) where the tractor has to pull as much load as possible, with the load getting heavier and hevier because the friction betwern the ground and load gets higher as the tractor pulls it further. The load he is pulling is a special car built for this type of events and makes sure the tractor drives straight.
Jackstand gave him extra confidence
Love the new format where you have you drifting in between clips its sick
Hey car mighty, as a farmer it is standard procedure to incorporate two brake pedals into tractors. This allows for differential break steering and just like in this video, is used for moments when the front wheels are lifted off the ground. This allows for the driver to maintain control of the vehicle despite there being no directing wheels touching. I actually experienced this when I overloaded a fiat tractor 80-90 with a water tank and drove it over a kilometre with the steering breaks because the front tires couldn't grip on the ground
When I saw my clip in the intro, I was speechless. My dream of being on one of my favorite UA-camr’s UA-cam video has finally came true! Thanks CarMighty, it meant a lot to me.

yes, thats the reason
@@CarMighty Your mothers the reason
Only a true CarMighty fan would somehow manage to comment before the video finishes uploading.
The way to steer a tractor with the front wheels up is simple. Tractors have individually controlled rear brakes for tighter turns in fields like if you want to turn sharp left you fully press your left brake pedal causing the rear left wheel to stop turning while the rear right one keeps spinning causing you to turn sharper. so basically when the front wheels are up it has tank steering.
Also it was a tractor pull not a tractor drag race
The best time of the week is when mighty uploads
11:56 the tractors have a brake pedal for each rear wheel you can steer with those and you can see he is using the pedals

for the tractor pulling stuff: yes there is a rear breaking mechanic that allows you to streer with the breaks if you look at the footage again you the that he is first pressing both peddals and then only one (Right foot). this technic is also used for field work on tracktors to do tight turns :)

11:46 the way a drag tractor works is it has individual brakes for the left and right rear wheels enabling the driver to slow one-wheel down causing the tractor to turn
can confirm as a "hick" we use those for sharp corners in fields, so that we don't have to take all day trying to turn like a cruise liner. Have to be careful when towing a disc'r or planter, because if one of those gets caught in the rear wheel from turning too sharp, you are going to have a wrecked implement, a shredded tire, and lose a day of field work, which you do NOT want
4:13

That abnormal truck looked like it was carrying one of those bridge laying machines. They tend to have loads of wheels because the extend out of the already built bridge, uses hydraulic jacks to stand on the pillars that go after the section the are supposed to lay then the move the bridge over the pillars the skipped and lower the section and the cycle repeats
There has to be a rear-wheel steering system in that tractor. Notice on 11:44 the wheels are in mid-air but when the driver steers to the left the tractors steers with it back on course. Still cool though ngl
