As soon as PBR came to the game, the devs made the insane choice to downgrade the "tex size" (basically crispness) of the shadows, which is a stupid thing to do considering the resolution stayed the same, meaning they weren't even saving performance doing it. This is why 0.4 looks better in some cases, not to mention that the skyboxes were way more saturated, causing that nice ambient blue in the shadows. The reason why the oldest versions of beamng don't run on the 4090 might be because it's a rtx card, using and older gtx card or amd equivalent might make it launchable.
I've been playing BeamNG since December 2014, and It's very cool to me, how this game has developed into something big. The old versions are crazy nostalgia for me, especially versions from around 3.0.5 to 4.3.2 Fun fact: Some of the old crashing sounds are from the game Rigs Of Rods, which was a game, very similar to BeamNG, made by the same devs, just 8 years prior (2005).
To be rather pedantic, the original author of ROR and main developer for a time was Pierre-Michel Ricordel, who to my knowledge has never had a hand in BeamNG at any point. The future head of BeamNG, Thomas Fischer, came later and was part of the ROR team for a while, and it was he along with some other ROR contributors around 2011 that gathered to form a new team and start development on a new (proprietary) product.
i think with 0.4 the foliage and some parts of the map genuinely look better (0.27 just looks monotone and depressing) i would seriously like to see a modpack of all of the old maps
This brings me back to the time when I was playing a very early version back before it was ever popular, it was a free trial version (I believe) that didn't even have a menu selection and you would just spawn in the grid map with that white pickup truck. I played that demo for a very long time just having fun with the soft body physics, and it was 10x more fun because I was in middle school and I enjoyed video games several times more than today. The only thing was that I had to turn the graphics way down and have the draw distance to only like 10 meters away otherwise I would just be playing a slide show on my dad's old laptop.
I remember when Jacksepticeye played the Steam Release of this game when it first came out. That was such a good series. Especially the episode where the trailer chased after the truck down a tube and proceeded to obliterate it at the bottom.
I played Beamng much earlier than this version. And this sidebar menu is more or less new. I remember that really old menus looked more like settings in professional programme, not like in game
12:32 The reason it runs bad with a 4090, and not then, is because devs have to update their games whenever a new graphics encoding system comes out, and it just so happens that the new beamng incorporates that.

The oldest Pigeon moment is the 4-wheeled green Pigeon from 0.3 version with two configs (a pickup and a shitbox) with a secret button (T or Y, not sure) to speed it up to the speed of light, the speed, when your car goes to disappear with all of the textures, speed up with a smoke thruster like the orange Civetta-plane had.
Oh, sorry. A bit nostalgic.

No clue but I really want to know too😂
I am pretty sure the bloom on the cars is actually just a 2D sprite and not actual post-processing bloom :)
