I'm in the process of building a custom guitar from Kiesel guitars and I've been trying a couple of their models so I can make a decision on the pickups that I want for my guitar.
In this video, I'm comparing the Lithium vs Frank Gambale vs Greg Howe pickups.
I love the definition on the Frank Gambale neck pickup and it's a great combination with the Greg Howe bridge pickup. On the other hand, the Lithium pickups sound very modern and bright.

That Gambale is like the perfect fusion between single coil tone and humbucker clarity.

  • @greekfreak1980
    @greekfreak1980 5 років тому +6

The Lithium bridge humbucker is a sort of "hybrid pickup" it has an Alnico 5 magnet in it´s core and ceramic boosters outside, similar design with the Misha Mansoor "Juggernaut" pickup by BKP.
Do not get this bridge humbucker if you want to get a warm, vintagey blues/classic-rock or 80´s style hard-rock tone.
It is designed for modern type of rock/progressive-Djent and metal styles, with modern high-gain settings and specifically with extended range guitars. If you wanna play some Periphery style stuff on a 7-string,it´s perfect though.
For more oldschool styles get either the Berylliums, the Holdsworth set or combine a Greg Howe bridge humbucker with either a Beryllium/Holdsworth/Gambale neck pickup.
Oh.. and if you wanna go really brutal metal, get a Thorium humbucker (ceramic high-gain type) with a Lithium.

If you are more into metal the thorium bridge is insanely aggressive and it pairs incredibly well with a lithium in the neck. Very balanced sound and that lithium retains a lot of clarity in that position as well which I find some pickups will not do

Personally I liked the Greg Howe bridge and the lithium neck

+1, the lithium pickup seems to produce some hissing noise

I have a Vader VM7 with the Lithiums. I did have to adjust my rig settings due to the extra brightness. That being said, with my drop A tuning and relatively high gain, these pickups stay super super defined, no mud whatsoever, even on the neck pickup. The bridge pickup oddly enough works really well for lead work above the 12th fret, does not get too shrill or biting. Good note definition overall. Definitely not warm / vintage, but that's not the sound / vibe I am after so I am very happy.

Love the clarity of the Lithium neck. While I like the Lithium bridge, I'd be torn between that and the Greg Howe bridge. Very curious how this would pair with a Beryllium bridge. Maybe at some point you can ask Kiesel to provide a test guitar with that combination. Thanks for posting this!

I have a Steve Vai Gravity Storm in the neck that sounds nice like that Frank Gambale version. DSH+ Suhr in the bridge which might be a contender with the great Greg Howe.

you need to try the beryllium pickups. they're low output humbuckers but honestly I love them for high gain as well.

I have the GH-24 with the Howe pickups (obviously) and I LOVE it. I'm shopping for guitar #2 and the one I have picked out has the Lithium pickups in it.

The Greg Howe was my favorite, so I agree with your decision! I’m wondering if they’re sending you some Beryllium pickups. Are you going with the Vanquish body style?

    • @Wallimann

They are sending me some to try! I’m probably going with a Tele body. 3)

Don't know if it is the whole guitar og just the pickups, but definitely the Lithium guitar - so much more personality. Especially the Lithium in neck position!

Love Kiesel. To complicate things I have the Greg Howe signature GH3---and it doesn't use his pickup. He replaced it with a duncan lil '59 and paired that with 2 s60s single coils. These are lower output and better suited for my needs because I use pedals and anything ceramic and high output sounds terrible. I'm a Alcino low output guy which work much better with pedals. but your setup is very different and your getting good tones out of them. You also have the Johnny Hiland pickups in his solo based sig guitar as well as Kiesel's Beryl's available. The Ap11s are gone and replaced by the beryl's. So maybe try those as well before deciding. Great vid.

Okay i noticed when you went to the Lithium pickups on clean neck, you had the pickup split, i could tell from the buzz and the sound was thin. So not a fair comparison of those pickups, plus ash compared to alder , ash will always sound thinner.........

Great post! I was just thinking today that I'd really like to see a comparison of the different Kiesel pickups. Please update us if the next Kiesel comes with Berylliums. Those are my current pick because they are supposed to be a little warmer than the Lithiums.

The Lithium pickups is the worst pickups ever IMO... PS. I have 25 Carvin builds in my belt (and have ripped out 2 sets of Lithums - Replaced with M22SD/M22V and M22SD/M22N).
Howe/Gambale any day of the year... But make sure to try out the Berylliums

What's wrong with your other guitars... For me they sound better...Go back and try those again... you might cancel your order... and why test them with distortion??? You didn't seem to try a 'clean' sound. anyway, that's my opinion

Nothing wrong with the others, I love them all! I am looking for a guitar to do leads mostly, hence that tone. :)
