Earlier this year I decided to build my own custom Kiesel guitar. I've been testing some of their guitars so I can decide which pickups I'm going to use.
In a previous video, I tested the Lithium pickups but I found out that they were not what I was looking for. Today I'll be trying the Beryllium vs. Frank Gambale vs. Greg Howe pickups.
The Frank Gambale neck pickup is kind of darker sounding and has a lot of expressiveness. The Beryllium neck pickup is also dark and very enjoyable to play too.
On the other hand, the Beryllium bridge has a lot of sustain while the Greg Howe bridge pickup seems to lose some of the mid frequencies.
I think I may go with the Berylliums, I really loved the sustain on those.

Finally somebody did a proper comparison video for the various Kiesel stock pickups!
The Lithiums are NOT bad, they´re just not designed to be warm sounding PAF type humbuckers but they´re designed for modern rock/prog/metal/Djent styles.
The Lithiums are best when you play with modern type high-gain and want note definition.Check out Stel Andre who has them in his Aries 6 & 7 guitars and gets some great tone out of them.
Calling them bad is like saying a supersports car is a bad car because it can´t go off-road or needs too much gas.Why are guitarplayers such idiots,is mindboggling, anyway I degress....
Anyway, the older Carvin branded M22 humbuckers with the 22 pole pieces are pretty much awesome and sadly they will be gone soon, because the company who provided Kiesel with the parts is out of business.I really hope,Kiesel is gonna make an updated version of the M22 in the future.
EDIT: Kiesel just released an updated version of the old M22 humbucker, the ''M12SD'' with the new Jason Becker tribute guitar and it's also available for all their other guitar models as an after market pickup. It's pretty much the old 22 pole piece humbucker, now in a conventional 12 pole piece design.
Just watched this again and I confirm what I said yesterday. Gambale neck + Beryllium bridge. 👍🏼
I watched it again too, and I agree.
Great demo- thanks! And both guitars look AND sound gorgeous. The 2+4 headstock looks really cool on the t-style too.
This and the last video have been SO helpful: my Vader build will go in soon; Im going Alan Holdsworth bridge & Gambale neck NOW Ive seen this! Thanks David & awesome Kiesels!
Love the sound of the berylliums. The paint/finish is awesome too!
Hi David. Personally, I like the Greg Howe Bridge and the Beryllium on the neck. I don't think you can go wrong either way though. Cheers.
For me it's the Beryllium. So could you please send me the guitar with the Beryllium pickups at your earliest convenience? I would greatly appreciate it, but take you time.
All of them sounded great imo opinion, but I did prefer the beryllium from what I heard! Also that Red/Brown/Purple what so stunning to see from design and sound nevertheless!
RC32 You said it better than I could’ve, agree 💯%
@@Supperconductor Ahh definitely my man!
Damn nice video! I’m liking your setup on the blue guitar for cleans! And the crazy color for OD and leads
Wow! I thought I was the only one on the planet that got that particular combo. I got a Keisel Solo with the Holdsworth headstock but, I got mine with the beryllium PU's in the HSS layout and I think the definition of the individual notes is incredible. Really the best PU's I think I have ever heard. Fabulous guitar, Kiesel is knocking it out of the park. Thanks for the great review.
I was hoping you would have reached over and thrown the PRS into the mix. Just for a little something different while comparing.. great video as always David!
Have to wonder how much the actual guitars are impacting the sustain. On the pickups know the Beryllium well as have a set in one guitar and a bridge with Marks singles in another. I'm intrigued with the Howe Gamballe set tonally. I'm hearing overtones and a clarity and definition with that set I'm not hearing with the Beryllium's. Because of your videos I really want to try the Gambale neck in particular. I have played a guitar with the Howe and really like that pickup. The Beryllium is nice but with the A2 has a softer attack than other pickups with say a A 5. Not bad just different. My ear is really liking the Howe Gambale combo. I would love to hear more of that combo and in particular running both together and then running them split. May order a Gambale neck because of your demos to try with the Illusionist I have in the bridge in my red DC 600.. For me I despise the Lithium pickups with how I play. In particular how I use touch and the guitar volume to open up and clean up with tube amps and few effects . The Lithium just flat does not work for me.
I like the Beryllium’s. I’ve used them quite a bit!
I’d go with the Gambale neck with the Berlylium bridge. Best of both worlds.
I was thinking the same.
I always enjoy your videos.
whats your favorite wood combination. like your all around wood combination, from fusion jazz to rock. I defenitely will go for the Gambale neck, but not sure with the bridge !!
Greetings from switzerland.
Pst. I'm thinking a ASH chambered body !!
They're both fine guitars. I think either would make a great addition to your collection. Before I made a choice I'd sure listen to how they fit into and cut through a mix
I got the Berylliums in my first Vader.
Do you know the name of the finish on the guitar with the Beryllium pickups?
I'd be interested in finding out how they sound split, especially in the neck position. Very cool chairs, by the way! Where can one acquire such a beauty?
Would the output characteristics of the Gambale neck work with the Beryllium bridge?
The Greg Howe Dimarzio bridge pickup from his previous Laguna signature guitar is one of my all time favorite pickups. Very powerful with a nice midrange but very touch sensitive. I'll have to checkout the Kiesel GH pu and see how they compare. Hard for me to hear the subtleties of the p/u through computer audio, my cheap headphones and effects on the guitar.
You clearly need 2 guitars with both setups!
1:46 Thx for clarifying....as soon as you put that guitar on the floor, I said NOOOOOOOOOOOoooo!! Lol
Got to be both how could you possibly choose.
The best advice I can offer is win the lottery or find a good shop lifter . Hope that helps.
Beryllium neck and Greg Howe bridge?
I was literally going to comment the same thing. The beryllium on the neck position seems to have that carried rich and fuller tone and sustain. And the Greg Howe in the neck position seems rich and thick with tone but not so much on the sustainability of the notes played. I wonder if having the Greg Howe pickup in the bridge position would brighten it up a little and add a tad bit more sustain while giving it more of that older sound everybody is used to. Hmmm, decisions decisions...
The Frank gambale Greg Howe pick up simply sound better - they individualized the notes better - even when you play chords
I just changed my mind you need both guitars
If by "you" you meant me. I agree. Sweet!
Is both guitars the same tone wood?
You don't know about the S22 pups. They are on their secret menu.... shhhh, don't tell them I told you.
nice InfoMercial for Carvin/Kiesel
the compression is typical of a Ceramic MagnetBeryllium ..??unlikely, as machining this metal is toxic dust producing
@@embreesmith7613 They r Alnico 2 not ceramic in the beryllium...
the Berylliums sound hotter .The midrange I am hearing might have something to do with it being in a different ,single cut guitar . Single cut guitars usually sound a little punchier than double cut guitars .
David, play whatever you want. I will listen.
What bridge is that in the tele with the berlyium pickups
I'm curious if he's checking the sound of these pickups using a digital processing unit or if he's using an amp with a couple of pedals? It sounds digital to me so that would sort of negate the overall sound quality of the pickups. I think the best way to audition the sounds of pickups is through a regular tube amp with no effects at all.
The blue guitar sounded better for me both for neck and bridge.
Gambale/Howe for me
Would Beryllium Bridge and Lithium Neck be a good combination?
Yeah, for sure!
Just a quick comment the brown tele like guitar with those pickups does *not* suit your playing style. If this is a true representattion of how you play then the blue guitar with those pickups is the one for you. The only other suggestion I would make is to try Fishman pickups before making a final choice. The final, final thing I would say is make sure you get a fretboards with inlay markers especially, especially, if you are teaching with the guitar, it's an imperative.
The Lithiums ARE bad... Beryllium and Greg Howe is both great bridge pickups... Beryllium and Frank Gambale is both great neck pickups.
I think the sustain is more about the guitar than the pickups. Something about a tele style body just sustains for days.
Some of the sustain difference could be the Pickup Magnets. The A2 in the Beryllium is weaker ad also has a softer attack while the A5 in the Gambale /Howe set is stronger in the mag and has a more percussive attack. Like the Beryliums a lot for a nice over wound PAF tone with attitude and have them in 2 guitars. However the Howe Gambale set has a different attack with more definition and clarity.
Am running a Berylium neck with an Illusionist bridge. The output is close but the attack and tonal balance for me is to different. Am about to order a Gambale neck as a result. If the Howe is a little to bright but you like the Gambale neck might want to look hard at the Illusionist bridge.
Hello David!! Please very please!! Plug those beautiful guitars into those great amps for God's sake!!! 😋
Theres push button devices to switch camera view so you dont have to swipe all the time.
Damn those guitars sounded similar ahahhg
David, you look different in a good way. New haircut sure but you have started lifting weights?
Thanks Martin! Yes, I decided to make a change and get healthy back in March. Thanks for noticing! :)
You need more guitar stands.
No better guitars at any price. If you don't know, your ass better call somebody!
#JusticeforJay if they would only treat customers like they want them and their acquaintances to be repeat customers and referrals.
Worry about the quality and price of the instrument. We don't have to get married to the people on the phone.
No better guitars at ANY price. If don't know, yo azz Betta call somebody! 🍺😆👍
Kiesel has tons of repeat customers and I'm one of them. Their customer support is way better than the defunct Carvin Co. was.
It's a custom guitar. You should keep the artist brand pickups. I couldn't tell much difference between the two sets really, but I only listened to it on a mac speaker. What I've also discovered is that if I let the audience choose (such as listening to review recommendations or experts) & not go with my gut, I'm usually pretty dissatisfied with my choice since I let someone else make it for me. lol.
They are too expensive.
