Aside from being an awesome fusion shredder, I had no idea Greg Howe is so amazing at demoing gear. He looks and sounds so polished/articulate when he speaks. Carvin should hire Greg to do all their demos - this guy rocks. Sweet guitar/amp too!
tonykratos I'm a fan of Greg but I wouldn't say that. Fusion is a really broad term. This type of fusion is very different from the jazzier type of fusion like John Scofield, Allan Holdsworth, Mike Stern, Scott Henderson, Wayne Krantz. Harmonically and rhythmically. This type of fusion is more aimed towards rock and metal guitar players.
Not trying to sound rude, but I strongly recommend taking studying jazz harmony and jazz melody a lot more before comparing Greg and Allan. Greg is rock-fusion and the other one is JAZZ-fusion. There are BIG harmonic textural differences between them. The differences between Allan and Greg might seem small to most rock players but if you have been interested in jazz for a long time you'll hear the BIG difference between the harmonic and melodic content of Allan Holdsworth and Greg Howe. It's not just the amount of gain or technique or style they're using. In the "jazzier type" of fusion you can look to Pat Metheny, early-Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale, John Scofield or Michael Brecker for that matter If you want to actually hear HARMONY and not just the shred licks/rock techniques and to actually outline chord changes in more than a haphazard way. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Greg because he's one of the few rock players who understand the importance of harmony and rhythm when it comes to improvising over changes (unlike a very famous "fusion" guitarist whose name start with "S"), but Greg's way of playing over changes is different for those jazz-fusion guys who hear harmony with a lot more precision like let's say like those who play over changes habitually (Allan Holdsworth, Ben Monder, John Scofield, Adam Rogers or Scott Henderson for example).
@@TheVintageyear fun fact is that i have been to a greg's clinic back in 2008/2009 and he liked to refer to himself as a rock guitar player with some jazzy licks. He's really a nice guy who would never compare himself to other guitar legends; he also said he was very grateful to allan for what he learned from him.
Not sure if you will ever see this Greg...but i will say to you keep inspiring!! Its been a long time. I haven't seen you, but I've seen your brother in the past. We talked for a few mins, and it was great to see him. I've followed several stages of all you've accomplished. Its been a long time since BMRR. I won't give it all out, but it was the street you grew up on and when you and your brother use to help me as a very youg kid. The family is proud of you and i am very happy on how you have succeeded. I will never forget your performances with DUKE from our highschool to the local bars in town. Damn. Long time. Good luck my friend and best wishes.
I think some of these debates comparing players is a little ridiculous. Especially comparing "fusion players." They each have their own style and sound; the phrasing, note choices, tone, techniques used, etc. They are ALL AWESOME!
i just cant stop listening to this OUTSTANDING improvisation at the beggining of this video ... i hope he will include this improv into his next solo album as a track .
Thank you Greg, I follow your music since Shrapnel’s years, with HOWE II, and your later fusion and jazzy touch open my ears and my brain to the eclectic beautiful of your music. Thank you from the bottom of my soul. Because just only with your notes you grown me to be a better man. Thank you again.
+Karl Lagerfeuer when u see how much hype and praise govan gets then he is underrated u listen from introspection through hyperacuity the man has his own tone and is unmatched
I played the amount today at guitar center. All I can say is the thing is amazing. ..great clean channel. One of the best I've tried. This video doesn't do enough justice to how GREAT it sounds....and feels to play. The gain channel is like s smooth Marshall...but warmer.....lots of gain. Loved it.
Greg Howe by far is one of the best players on the planet. It's not only his ability on the fretboard but his creativity which sets him apart. Listen to his CDs. Some of the most amazing music you will ever hear.
That carvin is a cool axe but I still love your original 80's fender strat, wow you certainly took the guitar player world to another level. Amazing player.
Underated ? No ! He is amazing and people who think the opposite are rare ! He is juste humble and is not trying to always be under the spotlights i guess :)
Greg haves very similar style with tony Macalpine and very humble like him curiously tony played carving guitars on the past 6 and 7 strings guitars were very cool and the reason why tony left carvin was due to the 8 strings guitar with floyd and only Ibanez makes come true his 8 strings guitar dream . Satriani on 2010 switches to 24 frets too , Vai ( many years ago ) , Guthrie Gorvan and Howe very nice team of 24 frets
Greg is such an articulate and thoughtful person - makes sense, given his sophisticated playing. I enjoy the fact that he's not a meathead. I always enjoy his playing - he definitely needs more recognition!
I've got to say, this muf/ this dude is bad assed fo realll... I've been following him since he started, for all of us that guitar world was our people magazine, this brother, of which he and I share similar heritage, has taken up the gauntlet of guitar playing to a whole new level!!! :-)
Nice to see Greg getting picked up by a really good company, Carvin. I couldn't understand why he played those Laguna's for a few years, there had to be other companies out there willing to endorse him. I play Ibanez myself but Carvins are super well made with a plethora of options. Very very nice guitars and Greg's looks like candy. Amazing player, a great influence to have in any players ear.
+Kris Ross Well said! I hated the fact that he played such a crappy guitar. Laguna made some horrible guitars. In all fairness, I never saw the model he played. But the rest were crappy!!
Greg Howe, one of the truly transcendent players of our time. Played the Maragold the other day, really a great amp for lead...funny too, I do the "basketball test" with every amp I buy, didn't know anyone else did that! The DV passed with flying colors, not exactly a heavy rock or metal amp, but does the "instrumental rock" thing better than anything else out there.
Nice playing and technique. You're a guitar guru that mix a lot of styles and music compass. I'm your fan and you're a inspiration to thousands of guitarrists around the world. Since I've listened your first LP recorded in 1988 I couldn't imagine it was possible play that feeling and speed. I just doesn't know how have you developed all of these techniques. Success in your career and I hope someday to watch a Workshop. See ya!!!!
4 years late but, dude, no way you can develop those type of muscles just by playing guitar, especially because you don't use your biceps when playing.
It's really nice to see Greg finally hitting a serious guitar deal with a serious company whose custom shop or factory ain't 12h by plane from him. Sad for other company they missed it, because Greg Howe is sort of our generation's Holdsworth. Look at all the guy having deadly fluids legato playing, outside funky impro and top notch tapping.
Surely it's about time for some more instructional material? :) Hot Rock Licks was awesome but it was a few years ago..... A great player with awesome tone, never seems to stop improving.
Always impressed by your style and sound Mr. Howe. I'm going to try to learn a few tunes from your earlier albums. If you see this and have time I'd love some advice. I plan to learn Direct Injection (more or less) from your album Introspection, which is my favorite from the old days. Cheers!
Often people can thumb down for other reason ... example here, the video quality could be better (low frames / seconds) , not necessary about his playing.
The thingy on the neck I suspect is a string damper. It stops unwanted "ringing". While he is tapping it's difficult to damp the strings with the palm hence the thingy which I believe is a hair scrunchy. Just my guess. Oh, nice playing on the part of Greg.
I noticed Greg barely switches pickups during his solos. Even those fast legato runs he's still doing w a bridge pickup and they still sound clean. Genious, nothing else to say!
Greg's playing has always been the perfect mix of shredding, groove and soulfulness.
marc777danielle Yep - 'perfect'.
quite simply, he's a beast...no denial of that fact is possible lol
+Ross Warren agreed.
any attempt in trying to debunk that would fail tragically.
***** yeah. His son is playing drums for Animals as Leaders
b garsed is amazing. Dark Matter is probably my fav work from him. but i'm familiar with all his tunes. w/ tj helmmerich and planet x and all that.
To this day I still come back for the opening jam! I don’t think I’ve ever actually watched the whole video. I just rewind when he’s done playing 🤘
Frank Gambale Greg Howe Guthrie Govan is the perfect fusion G3!
Wow !! That would be very cool..I've seen Gambale & Govan..going to see Greg this Aug. in San Diego..
YEEESSS !!!!
And now, would add Matteo Mancuso for the G4!

+Nick Pop I was just thinking the same thing. That was the best demo/explanation of gear I've ever heard.
Nick Pop are you white?
He's as articulate a speaker as he is a player...great demo !!
Greg is an absolute class act and one of the nicest most humble guys you will ever meet. See you at Rod's shop , Greg!
Been playing all my life and I’m 51. Greg is now my favorite. You can’t touch this guy.
mind blown every moment Greg plays! Been a huge fan since the early years.
One of the most well spoken music artists out there, he plays like he talks if u think about it lol
I did a studio gig in the early 2000s and he was the guitar player, he was very impressive and a very nice guy.
Wow. I think the master has his best tone ever yet. Thanks to Carvin and Dv Mark. Lovin this..

No one plays better than Greg.
seriously. Can't ever think of a solo I've heard from this guy that I don't like. Is and will always be one of the greatest.
Best tone you've ever had! Loved the jam at the beginning!
Sounding great as always Greg!
Finally a proper DV Mark Maragold demo! Took a while to hear this amp properly.
