Shot of it pulling into the yard at sunset is a perfect ending! Great work on this! 🌇🚂
Thanks so much B and O, sorry I got.in your shot!!
@@RailfanRowan No problem at all, glad you got to see it!
@@BaltimoreAndOhioRR hey I seen this train on your video on it haha!
@@evangroves641 Cool, thanks for watching!
I am glad it is back in service it is a beauty
Excellent video Rowan!! The old girl looks C&O but definitely sounds N&W. Hearing her in the distance sounds like the 1218. Nothing beats the smell of oil, grease and coal smoke.
Despite this restoration taking longer than many expected this was still worth the wait, hopefully before 1309 is scheduled to pull those polar express trains in a few weeks the crew will be able to do another test run but all the way to Frostburg til time. Fingers crossed.
Apparently those tests are pending track work, per another user
@@RailfanRowan yeah the tracks sure were groaning alot, sounds like walking in the snow with the crunching sounds lol
Man, that first crossing shot where it stops and the last three shots of the video are some of the best I’ve seen of 1309 so far! Great video, Rowan!
Thanks so much, be sure to share with friends!!
Seeing a former C&O loco done in the Western Maryland's scheme is so cool.
And the N&W hooter whistle just fits for 1309; it's like a part of 1218 rides with her.
Great shots!
Yes I agree with you
I wish they would’ve put 1218‘s whistle on the 1309
Even though 1309 is an older design then 1218
Great shots. I grew up in Ridgeley next to the tracks. Love the sound of the trains.
Thanks for watching!
I’m so damn proud of 1309
Unpopular opinion maybe. This is the billowing, belching behemoth I was expecting when 4014 was restored. I know it’s mainly because they never let her pull anything remotely challenging, but on the 1309 you can just see and feel the power. I wonder how much it has to do with keeping her a coal burner? Love the video!
ha, same thing happened to us this year with the whistle, it turned. No matter how tight you get that valve, boiler gets hot, and suddenly its loose.
Heat expansion I imagine, hmmmmm. They'll have to come up with a solution
Great to know that they’re finally up and running, I’ll have to get out there at some point soon.
Yes definitely!!
Been watching a few videos on this run. Probably the best coverage of this operation by far
Thanks Kyle!!
When I think steam power , that whistle is what comes to mind, something hauntingly beautiful about it. Thinking about what that sounds like off in the distance at night brings chills . Great video awesome editing
Thanks so much Keith, to GOD BE THE GLORY!
There is almost something sad and mournful about 1309 whistle.
This was my favorite video of all. So professional at the beginning giving context and then we could all just focus on and enjoy the train. Thank you for the extra editing and cinematic work. Happy Thanksgiving from Lynchburg railfans!
Thanks so much for the compliment, SHV! Glad you enjoyed the style of this one, is exactly how I intended it to be enjoyed
I love your videos rowen happy railfaning
:)
Oh wow! I wish I can see that Engine One day Nice Video Rowan!
I hope you can, a beautiful piece of art
Thank you man
AWESOME! Can't wait to visit WMSR next year!
Any idea why they didn't turn 1309 around in Frostburg?
Out of daylight is my guess, testing is better done when one can see all moving parts!
I’ve heard that much work has to be done to get 1309 to utilize their whole line including the turn table. How much work has been done and has yet to be done I couldn’t tell you.
They ran mountain thunder backwards often with the diesel probably providing dynamic braking and visual requirements.
@@RailfanRowan I understand that they need to re-grade the approach to the turntable to allow 1309 to use it.
Fine job! Enjoy the energy and the "come along with me" feel of your videos. Keep up the great work!!
Thanks man, I appreciate this compliment!!
Another Great video, Thanks Rowan!
Thanks Stan!!
Great video again Rowan, myself and my little boy love your videos here in Manchester uk. I have a company in the uk that overhauls steam locomotive boilers, called Heritage Boiler Steam Services. Happy Thanksgiving from here in the uk
Thanks so much for the view, so glad you enjoyed it... And to God be the Glory!!
happy thanksgiving to you and your family enjoyed the video if you're looking for places with steam engines running the East Broad Top Railroad does that
Oooh yes, that's ok the list 👀
Last Time we seen a Steam Train, you and friend were Chasing it through So. IL and to St. Louis.👍
That's right!!!
Thanks Rowan! Great to see your video again. Thanks! 👍
From Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, this engine is all around Chessie System.
That's right, should be painted as such!
@@RailfanRowan Like 2101.
Love the conductor in the blue flannel 😍😍
Aaahhh Conductor Cameron here?
Oh damn it’s cool seeing all these steam engines coming back to life. I seen a video recently if the great late Southern Pacific #2472 do like a test run after it’s restoration. I haven’t see that thing move in a long time. Nice to this man!🔥
Thanks man!!
Now living out near Seattle, I can't wait to come home and ride this. I still miss 734 and wish they didn't let it deteriorate as much as it has. At least put a cover over it.
Any idea if they plan to restore the 734 since the 1309 is operating?
Thanks for uploading this! Fantastic!
Edit to add, the ending is just stunning. Rowan, you are so good at filming; the quality and filming reminds me of that VA train in the snow a couple Christmases ago. I can see an intro video made from this footage. How did you arrange for that sunset🤔
After it being cloudy all day long, we certainly did not expect that sunset! And yep that snow video was only Last year!!! 🤪
@@RailfanRowan my memory, terrible... I thought that snow train was pre pandemic! Been a long year😖
1309 Western Cumberla Maryland like over Bridge over 450 gates down
This is awesome! Very nice, clear & crisp footage of this beautiful locomotive, and train.
Thank you!
Great video.
Awesome Video Rowen ! Had A Fun Day As Well, And It Was Nice Meeting Up With You Again!
Good to see you as well!!
Can someone explain to me the smokebox situation with this engine? I have never seen a steamer dump out so much intense smoke when doing little work, or in the case of the flagged crossing stopped and not working. Yet she's just dumping out smoke like crazy
Thought the same thing!
She loves to spit out steam
Great video!
Thanks buddy! ;)
Yo man!! i was wondering if you lived near manassas/northern virginia and was wondering if u wanted to go railfanning somtime i go to south manassaas a lot
Hey someone told me the southern unit derailed
Great job filming this! That’s an engine type I’ve never seen. Fun!
Thanks so much!!
As your usual!!! Awesome footage Rowan. Especially nice to see success of this renovation in video!!! Thank you for recording this historic event
You're welcome! Thanks for choosing one of mine again!
So many things on the plate! One,a real Baldwin Articulated, last of its kind! Two,one super whistle, that stirs the heart strings,! And three, your usual superb photography, plus that artistic eye,! Rowan,Happy Thanksgiving, and may you and yours, enjoy this grateful day! P.S. When you consider that some,ex-C&O,switchers would up on the Virginian,it's really right and proper that the Western Maryland gets its dibs in,as they ran quite a few Articulateds in their heyday!! Thanks for your efforts and time!! 😇!😇😇😇😇😇💯💯💯💯💯💫💫
I noticed that 1309 pulled an excursion train in the tracks where WM 734 was before
That's right!
This is the best 1309 video I’ve seen!
Thank so much!!
This is so cool to see 1309 up and running!
Wow what a 2-6-6-2 Mallet steam locomotive. Thanks for sharing Rowan. LJL
Just great thanks for the up close and first-hand view Rowan you are the best.
Thanks so much Chuck!!
Never seen an engine like that 'What is it?
Not sure of the type but search it, Google certainly has info
Nice to meet you in Shenandoah with 1065.
B E A U T I F U L 👍🏻👍🏻
So cool Rowan! Thank you for going up there to get this footage!
You're welcome, Ulysses!!
The Steam Engine is a thing of beauty. The whistle, the billowing steam, the sound as it takes off and gains momentum. It takes you back 150 years to imagine these Iron giants gliding across the prairies blowing its whistle. It stops and brings us everything we needed, provisions, people and anything else you can think of. Great Video, thank you.
Some very amazing thoughts from a far off fantasy world! This locomotive gives a close taste
Now we got not one or two but three articulated steam locomotives operating now with 1 from the Rayonier Lumber Company (2-6-6-2)T mallet #110 which now operates on the black hills central railroad in South Dakota
Too bad they couldn't get sponsored by Chessie Federal Credit Union...
Fabulous loco. Fantastic project 👍👍👍. To accomplish that in seven years is good going!
Richard Trevithick would be thrilled.
I never knew these locos took top air through the firebox sides. How about that?
American steam is so fabulous it would bankrupt the English language to describe it.
The first 20 yrs of my life was growing up on Cash Valley Rd, about a qtr. mi. down the road from Helmstetter's farm .. the WM was our playground in so many ways .. crazy cool getting excited about watching vids of trains on what used to be a typical Summer day with my brothers and friends .. you're great at what you do, Rowan, keep it up and Ill keep tuning in .. Thanks man
If 1309 is still around by the time i make it though med school to become a surgeon, i will 100% pay bucko bucks or my whole salary just to learn how to operate steam locomotives and hopefully get the chance to drive this beautiful engine, honestly 1309 is insanely impressive and a great example of human engineering
Wow that thing looks incredible in the Western Maryland livery. That's got to be one of the most photogenic locomotives I've ever seen. That shot of it stopping at the railroad crossing is just beautiful with the fall colors and huge plume of steam and smoke. They even painted the rods with black inlay, such a good restoration.
I completely agree!
Great that another railroad has brought a steam locomotive back into service.
Chuck, isn't it great!?!
Anyone know where 450 come from after Amtrak? There’s a short line I railfan called the IANR , Iowa Northern Railway, that has four of those units
Hey,runs Way Better than my Lionel lionchief this is the real deal now, 😃🎅🤶🐓⛪,1:51
Beautiful! And what a mighty voice she has!
She is incredible!
The Big Boy 'restoration' was botched, and these clips have proved it to me. Compare the clips shown here to clips of #4014, and it's night and day.
Thank you for documenting this test run of the #1309 on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. The #1309 seemed to perform without a hitch (exept for the problem with the whistle). The sky looked beautiful as the train was proceeding back to teh yard. Thank you for uploading this video for our enjoyment!
You're welcome and thank you as always Thomas!!
Very cool shots!
You probably don’t remember me but I used to work with you in 2018 at a lovely store I won’t name and you were a wealth of knowledge on these beautiful machines.
I remember you ;) thanks for check it out, hope you're doing well man!
I remember seeing her rot away in the parking lot yard of the B&O Rail Museum in the hood in West Baltimore when I was a little kid. Never thought she'd be on the rails again.
Awesome!! Wonderful filming Rowan! Thanks so much for the message as well !!! All the best and happy thanksgiving.
You're welcome!!
Did they say they lost the whistle?
That's right!
Thank you so much for this great video and report! I was beginning to wonder if the 1309 would ever make it back. Yours was a long trip and I appreciate you. Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless you friend.
Thanks Edward!!!
So thats how they recharge the steam cells, Pull it backwards! Too bad steam is so inefficient, it almost seems like a living breathing thing.
First 611 comes back again, then the Big Boy, and now this C&O giant.
How are you doing tonight good evening happy thanksgiving day tonight I love all of your train videos on UA-cam everyday videos
Why does it black smoke that much? There wasn't really load on?
Absolutely fantastic camera work with so many beautiful shots. I cant wait to see some of the stills. Hope they get the whistle fixed it just makes the whole thing sound so cool. Thank you!
Check my Instagram for stills, they are all screenshot from my videos, I only shoot film! Thanks so much for watching!!!
So much nicer than stuffed and mounted in Baltimore!!
That's right!! 🦌
Great video, Rowan! It finally happened. I contributed financially, but my modest contributions pale compared to the 'sweat equity' poured forth by so many into #1309's refurbishment. Your excellent video really captured this magnificently restored engineering marvel in action. Thank you.
You're welcome, so glad I could showcase the craftsmanship!
One word- WOW. That is simply amazing.
Thanks North County!!!
Been awhile since your last post, I was wondering if you were ok, I see you are fine, Great shots, my dad was a C&O man, wish he were here to see this beloved engine🙏🏻😿🚂👍🏻 thanks Rowan👍🏻
Thanks so much for sticking around!!
@@RailfanRowan I'm with ya! Always👍🏻
One of the last Baldwin Steam locomotives built.
Exciting seeing the 1309 test run! Magnificent photography!
Thank you Phil!!
No way!! She’s back I loved that locomotive lets gooo
Yes!!!!
Love the sound of that whistle. Too bad it can't be duplicated on today's diesels.
Nahhh
Yeah too bad
When 1601 joins the railroad 😳
Fantastic Job Rowan! 37 thousand subscribers let’s go! Famous on UA-cam!
Thank you 🤗
If only she returned for this dang summer season 😭
What the heck is this locomotive #450 called it looks like a polar express colors directly from the movie
Wow. That’s gotta be the best shot at the end
Thanks so much, and yes I agree!!
HELLO ROWAN ITS IS RANDY AND I LIKE U VIDEO IS COOL ROWAN THANKS FRIENDS RANDY AND C&O #1309 IS COOL THANKS ROWAN
Can you imagine what it was like to light her fire the first time in decades?
9:46, I might be the only one asking this question but what paint scheme did they apply to 450?
You're not the only one... Everyone is STILL trying to answer that question, it has something to do with the Polar Express
OMG! I Just Don,t Have The words.. Dear lord! What A Beautiful! Lady! Living,Breathing, Lady. what A Deep Fantastic Voice She Has. Almost sitting Her In Tears. I Hope to Be able to Meet Her Someday !
Wow, great steam locomotive 👍
Great footage! They really did an awesome job!
Yes they did!!
I love how my father is always somewhere in these videos 😂
I think this is the first 2-6-6-2 steam engine that I have ever seen.
The nice view but a little more air pollution please
I'm sorry to have to say this but, as much as I love watching and listening to steam locomotives, this has to be the most boring 14 3/4 min. yet. Lots of bell ringing and steam off of a crawling loco. not very exciting, nor interesting. The passenger cars look great though, like brand new.
Normally I wouldn't cast you any pearls, but my curiosity is insatiable... what would you have rather seen? This event is an incredible exposé of a beautiful piece of history. Would you have rather me talked through the whole thing??? I appreciate the feed back, truly. Send me your video (the result of hours worth of your work) when you're done and we can compare notes! ;)
Welcome back, 1309.
Truly awesome video, Rowan! 1309 looks like a beast and I can hardly wait to see her in person.
She's definitely worth the trip!
As a sideline, and at the 7:08 mark, am I to assume that her crew decided NOT to fix her whistle on the spot due to the potential of live steam blasting out of the port in the steam dome and scalding everybody involved like a piece of bacon? Excellent call guys !!! Yeah...let her cool down for a week and THEN try it. Oh! and one more thing, you're going to have to put a steadying bracket / brace extending from the top of the whistle and anchor it to the sheet metal, (or whatever), covering the boiler if you want to keep it at that angle. GRAVITY WINS AGAIN !!! (Sorry, but I'm sure ya'll figured out how to correct this situation long before this post). God Bless you !
So is that an actual N&W hooter? I thought C&O used them as well? Definitely sounds just like 1218!
The consensus is is that it is an NW hooter, but I do not know whether or not that is 100% accurate. I thought for sure they would have used the original 1309 whistle, but it appears that everybody is recognizing it as characteristic to the 1218 and other such locomotives
very nice shots Rowan!!
That whistle does sound like Norfolk and Western 1218's whistle!
It does!! Reminds of of the trip up the NS B Line they took!!
Nothing like steam on a fall or winter morning!! As someone else mentioned in another comment, love the shot you got at 7:16 when they had to flag the crossing. Happy (after) Thanksgiving.
Thanks Artie ! Happy Thanksgiving to you as well, TGBTG
